This infrastructure is currently made up of six leading edge machines, hosted by four member countries, (France, Germany, Spain and Italy) and accessible through an open peerreview process, complemented by national resources operated and accessible via High Performance Computing (HPC) centres throughout Europe. This partnership powers excellent science and engineering in academia and industry, addressing society’s grand challenges. Open to all disciplines of research, and industry for open R&D, the PRACE infrastructure is a vital catalyst in fostering European competitiveness. To keep pace with the dynamic needs of a variety of scientific communities and numerous technical changes and developments, PRACE hosting members' systems are continuously updated and upgraded to make most advanced HPC technologies accessible to European scientists and industry. PRACE is a Belgian international not for profit organisation (aisbl) with its seat in Brussels. SHAPE, the SME HPC Adoption Programme in Europe is a pan-European programme launched in 2013 to support HPC adoption by small to medium enterprises (SMEs). It raises awareness and equips European SMEs with the expertise necessary to optimise opportunities for innovation using HPC and to enhance competitiveness. SHAPE helps European SMEs overcome cost and training obstacles and facilitates processes to define and adapt appropriate business models to HPC use. The PRACE research infrastructure includes supercomputers in all major architectural classes. This PRACE peer-review process is overseen by the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) composed of leading European researchers who advise on scientific and technical matters. Industrial users, with head offices or substantial R&D activity located in Europe, are eligible to apply and undergo the same review. The PRACE Access Committee ranks awarded projects and guides resource allocation. An Industrial Advisory Committee (IAC), composed of representatives from multinational and small enterprises from eleven industrial sectors, assists PRACE on maximising HPC usage to foster European competitiveness and economic growth. PRACE receives user feedback via the PRACE User Forum, an independent forum where users discuss and share their experience. TRAINING & OUTREACH PRACE is active in a number of Training and Outreach activities. These include: • • • • Six PRACE Advanced Training Centres (PATCs) www. prace-ri.eu/PRACE-Advanced-Training-Centres at: Barcelona Supercomputing Center (Spain), CINECA – Consorzio Interuniversitario (Italy), CSC – IT Center for Science Ltd (Finland), EPCC at the University of Edinburgh (UK), Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (Germany), Maison de la Simulation (France) Training portal (www.training.prace-ri.eu) a rich repository of web-based training and advanced educational materials Over 200 training events with over 5,000 trainees Presence at international conferences in Europe and the U.S., such as ISC and SC • • • • • • Annual PRACE Scientific and Industrial Conference (PRACEdays) under the banner “HPC for Innovation: When Science Meets Industry” Numerous education and training events throughout Europe (www.events.prace-ri.eu) Sponsorship of awards for outstanding scientific and industrial contributions at ISC and PRACEdays Design initiatives for energy efficient HPC models Successful outreach campaign for high school students (www.prace-ri.eu/daretothinktheimpossible/) Popular Summer of HPC placement programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students (www. summerofhpc.prace-ri.eu) PRACE IN NUMBERS • There are currently 25 members in the PRACE partnership • Hosting members committed a total funding of €400M for the initial PRACE systems and operations • PRACE has awarded 10.2 thousand million core hours up to and including the 10th Call for Project Access (February 2015) to 394 projects from 38 countries • PRACE has evaluated 25 prototypes of promising architectures and technologies and tested application scalability • PRACE has enabled hundreds of scientific applications to exploit leading-edge HPC • PRACE has supported 50 companies since the inception of the Open R&D programme in 2012 • PRACE has published 16 Best Practice Guides (www. prace-ri.eu/Best-Practice-Guides) and over 200 White Papers (www.prace-ri.eu/white-papers) ACCESS FOR SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY Preparatory Access For projects that require HPC resources to port, optimise and scale out applications to prepare future proposals for Project Access. Applications for Preparatory Access are accepted at any time, with cut-off dates every three months.
