FHL Draft Details
It’s that special time of the year where we can put our stamp on our teams with adding new players to the roster.
This can be the most exciting time for many who look to rebuild their team to a dynasty. Now we get to put on our
GM hats to craft our team.
We will be using FHL Yahoo User's Group Forum to conduct the draft so people can post messages to the listserver
with their picks.
Here is the general procedure FHL will use to conduct the FHL draft. When a block opens either Chad (assistant
commissioner) or I will post a message that will have a grid like so:

However FHL is willing to consider doing this for next season. This can be an agenda item for change in the FHL for

FHL Top 10 Enforcers
With the recent string of deaths among current and former hockey enforcers such as Bob
Probert, it is only fitting to take a look at some of the best enforcers currently in the FHL.
The players chosen are those who stick out amongst the intimidators in the league.
10. Steve Downie of the Cleveland Barons steps in at 5’11’’ 191lbs. Steve ranked 10th in the
NHL with 171 PIM for the 2010-2011 season. He Ranked 9th on the team with 10 goals and
was 8th with 22 assists and 32 points, 1st on the team with a +8 rating, and ranked 3rd on
the team in S% with 12.0. Steve can definitely play the game and be an enforcer as well.
Steve sparred seven times in 57 games.
9. Daniel Carcillo of the Johnstown Chiefs comes on the ice at 6’0’’ 205lbs. Daniel ranked
23rd in the NHL with 127 PIM for the 2010-2011 season. Daniel has been given the
nickname “moustache”. He can also play offense and proved it on 03/02/2011 by scoring a
Gordie Howe hat trick in Tampa Bay on 03/02/2011. The Gordie Howe hat trick consists of
1G, 1A, 1 Fight. On 12/5/2010, Steve racked up 29 PIM against the Washington Capitals.
Steve is definitely a premium enforcer for Johnstown and the Chiefs should enjoy their new
addition acquired from Kansas City. Daniel sparred 13 times in 57 games.
8. Zack Sortini of the Cincinnati Swords steps in the rink at 6’4’’ 215lbs. He had an offseason this year in the NHL but did drop the gloves eight times in 32 games. Zack will still be
a good enforcer this season for the Swords.

7. Cam Janssen is another enforcer for the Cincinnati Swords. Cam comes to the rink at 6’0’’
215lbs. He will be another good enforcer for the Swords who is not afraid to take one for
the team. Cam took part in the fight of the year in the NHL against Pierre –Luc Leblond that
lasted over two minutes. He fought 17 times in 54 games.
6. If you take one look at George Parros you can get chills. He steps up to the plate at 6’5’’
228lbs. He is currently a free agent in the FHL but should find a new home when the free
agent pool opens in September. He ranked 10th in the NHL with 171 PIM and had 78GP
which is what coaches in the FHL like to see in their enforcers. George had a whopping 27
fights in 78 games.
5. Jared Boll of the Columbus Jaguars is a good enforcer in the NHL but tends stay out of
the spotlight because of the low ranking Columbus Bluejackets and their superstar Rick
Nash who is always in the spotlight for Columbus. Jared steps in at 6’2’’ 214lbs. He ranked
7th in the NHL with 182 PIM. He was a pivotal player for Columbus in the FHL by
intimidating at the right times. Jared fought 23 times in 73 games.
4. Matt Carkner of Montreal comes to the ice at 6’4’’238lbs. He had 136 PIM and sparred
12 times in 50 games. Montreal will take advantage of Matt’s enforcing ability but will have
to keep an eye on him as he has been prone to injuries this past season.
3. Zenon Konopka of the McGregor Condors steals the thunder in PIM by ranking 1st in the NHL with 307 for
the season. What adds to his resume for Coach Cheng, is the 82 game season he had last season in the NHL.
Zenon is definitely an enforcer that will need extra attention on the ice by other FHL teams this season.
Stepping in at 6’0’’ 209lbs, Zenon still dropped the gloves 25 times in 82 games. Three of these fights occurred
during the first six games of his NHL season. He also recorded two games with 22 PIM in each game against
Philadelphia on 10/30/2010 and Anaheim on 11/10/2010. Watch out FHL when Zenon Konopka steps on the
ice.
2. Sean Avery of the Detroit Bandits is one of the more famous enforcers in the NHL. He has never been afraid
to speak his mind and many times says things that hurt his wallet. He steps in the ring as a smaller enforcer at
5’10’’ 195lbs but is not afraid step in when needed. He was an asset for Detroit last season and should
continue this trend into the next season. Sean ranked 8th in the NHL with 174 PIM and fought 12 times in 76
games. What makes Sean unique as an enforcer is his passing ability. He collected 21 assist last season in the
NHL which is a good number for an enforcer.
1. Colton Orr of the Florida Everblades is another enforcer that will need special attention in the FHL. Colton
steps in at 6’3’ 222lbs with 128 PIM in 46 games. He fought 13 times in 46 games. He had two games in which
he racked up a high number of PIM. He had 24 PIM against Ottawa on 01/01/2011 and 19 PIM against the New
York Rangers on 01/19/2011. Florida will enjoy the presence of Colton on the ice this season.

up where he left off last issue and again lends his sage hockey wisdom in on all the recent
trades post “Crystal Finals” after August 2, 2011:
Youth Dominates Offseason Exchanges
What is interesting to this writer is that many individuals have offered some nice praise and congrats on the last
analysis of offseason trades. While I appreciate everything that has been said, I am nothing more than an opinion on
the exchanges that have occurred leading up to our draft. I am sure that there are many more opinions as well that are
just as, if not more, educated than mine. I invite all of those people to offer opinions on these trades as well…it might
even be a little fun to do. With that said, a few more trades have occurred since our last issue of Gamespeak. Here
again, I am going to delve a little deeper to see what the trades look like up to date, while offering my opinion to the
choices made.
(Trade 5: Cincinatti sends D Paul Martin (29 yrs old) to Gatineau for C Derrick Brassard (23 years old)
Cinicinatti knows about my high flying team, and some of the stellar offense that both Detroit and Cleveland possess as
well. I like this move for Cincinatti in acquiring a young Center in the caliber of Derrick Brassard. He already brings a
6.7 overall rating to the game this year and he possibly has the ability to punch Cincy’s top 2 lines if he continues to
grow. Luc continues to make his team better. If you want to compete with the tops of his hard division, you have to
have Defense to do it. Paul Martin is a little older at 29 years, but brings a solid 7.7 overall rating in the game this year.
Gatineau is building for now and I like their acquisition in this trade better.
(Trade 6: Exton sends G Johan Hedberg (37 yrs old) to New York for D Keith Ballard (28 yrs old)
Champion Cliff Dolgins knows what he is doing in this trade. From the outside you might wonder why he would
sacrifice part of the blue line for age in net. Looking closer he has a decent enough rating in star goalie Halak, but not
enough games. None of his other goalies can bring a ranking into the 6’s like Halak, but Hedberg does. His years of
experience might be giving the defending champs a full season of goaltending between two guys. Exton gets Ballard
that should be good depth on his blue line unless Jeff has a plan to use him right away. I say this trade is about as even
as you can get it, and should be even coming out of the same division.
(Trade 7: Exton sends LW/C Mikael Backlund (21 yrs old) to Cincinatti for G Michal Nuevirth)
Jeff’s problems are solved for a good number of games at goalie, but not for the entire season. Exton gets a 6.9 Goalie
in Neuvirth and at least 58 games. Question is, can young goaltender cover the rest of the season. I believe that is
what Exton is thinking and I agree he can be that stop gap. Of course it leaves about 10 games or so he will have to use
someone else and pray for a lucky night. Cincinatti continues to add youth to there arsenal in adding 21 year old
Backlund. The NHL and critics have been waiting a couple of years for this kid to break out, he is still young with quite a
bit of upside and a good wrister. I like Exton’s move on this trade the best. He had to have a goaltender, and Nuevirth
is still young enough to develop more…as long as he stays in Colorado and doesn’t bolt for the Russian KHL.
(Trade 8: Kansas City sends C/ LW David Steckel (28 yrs old), LW Daniel Carcillo (26 yrs old), and RW Colby
Armstrong (28 yrs old) to Johnstown for RW Mike Knuble (38 yrs old) and the Chiefs 4 th Rd pick)
While I can’t just flat out say I win with this trade, I will try to give you and idea of what I was thinking when I made it.
I needed to replace the firepower of Daniel Alfredsson on the right side, and Knuble fits that mold perfectly. One
interesting fact about Knuble is how strong he has become older in age. He now has more goals in his 30’s (218) then
Wayne Gretsky did in his 30’s (188). In getting rid of Steckel in particular, I needed more than just Knuble. Steckel
brings a coveted “10” faceoff ranking to the Chiefs, so the 4th round had to come with it. I also was forced that I
would need to cut Carcillo and Armstrong before the draft, so moving them for some value was my only option. I
hope that I don’t regret the decision with Carcillo. He is a great enforcer, and has just been moved in the NHL to
Chicago. He will get a fresh start, and so might the Chiefs.
(Trade 9: Florida sends RW/LW Alexandre Burrows (29 yrs old) to McGregor in exchange for C/RW Kris
Versteeg (24 yrs old) and the Condors 3rd rd draft pick)
This was a perfect match for both teams. While I don’t feel a pick and Versteeg alone will make the Florida
organization better for this year, he does have the potential to pick up a very good player for the future with the extra
3rd rd pick. It was no surprise that management in Florida had been very unhappy with Burrows. He performs great
on the ice, but was a locker room cancer for Florida that they wanted to get rid of. In McGregor, they found that
partner to trade. McGregor instantly gets better with this move. Versteeg wasn’t doing much for Coach Cheng, but
Burrows will fill that offense in with a 7.2 overall rating this upcoming FHL season. I can see a smart Coach Cheng
finding a home for Alex somewhere on the first 2 lines. He will also bring a little grit to the table as well. I think that
the Condors scored the biggest with this move, and should be stronger on offense with him.
(Trade 10: Cleveland sends RW Chris Stewart (23 yrs old) and their 2nd rd pick to Gatineau in exchange for
LW/C Patrik Elias (34 yrs old), C Dave Bolland (24 yrs old), and D Paul Martin (29 yrs old) )
Scott is a very smart coach, and has now made a massive move to assist his team in
competing with the high flying teams like mine. I haven’t soon forgot that Scott
competed all the way down to the last regular season game to win the Midwest Division,
so he knows what he is doing. I really like the acquisition of D Paul Martin for his
team. It is not news that Pronger suffered an injury this past season, and won’t be
there for the Barons blueline all season long. Chara is a monster, and must have
another one next to him with Chris being gone for a good portion of the season. I think
that they found that in D Paul Martin and is overall rating of 7.7. Scott also
collected former NHL superstar Patrik Elias and his 7.5 overall rating, and depth in C
Dave Bolland. Elias will easily replace what Stewart brought to the ice for the Barons
with the exception of some solid hitting. Elias will clearly be a better skater. I
think that Gatineau has made quite a few moves this year, but I think he wants a little
youth with acquiring the young Stewart and a pick. I don’t think it is a bad move at
all, but the advantage certainly goes to Scott
and Cleveland in this trade. This is a blockbuster that will help Cleveland keep up with the fast paced Midwest for
sure.
(Trade 11: California sends RW/LW Teddy Purcell (25 yrs old) and RW Arron Asham (32 yrs old) to Exton
for Exton’s 2nd Rd Pick)
Wow, California must seen something in the top of the 1st and 2nd round that we are missing. In letting Purcell go,
they are surrendering a 7.2 overall rating, and a fantastic locker room guy. I hope that the Zephyrs are targeting a 1st
or 2nd line winger with that extra draft pick in the 2nd. Even then, will there be an overall rating in the 7’s. I can’t
wait to see what they have in mind. Exton had quite a few picks already, but they turned that one pick into a 1st or
2nd liner for sure, and a bone breaking hitter like Asham. This will help a team compete a little more that appeared
to be going in the youth movement direction. While I still think that Jeff is counting on finding more than one
diamond in the rough in the draft this year, I think this was a great move on his part for this season. I would give the
advantage to Exton in this move, but I am anxious to see what Kent does with this one.
(Trade 12: California sends C/RW Craig Adams to Exton for a 4 th Round pick)
Not much really to say about this trade. Adams has a 4.7 overall rating at each position, so this would appear to be a
depth pick. I would give the slightest of advantages to Exton for acquiring a *** player on the penalty kill. Every
team can use one of those to be sure. Jeff is starting to make some of those extra picks already pay off for him
before the draft ever begin. Remember, he was the first player out there to start grabbing draft picks for some of
his best players. I even questioned it in my last article, but he is making good use by acquiring little pieces you must
have to win a Championship.
(Trade 13: Gatineau City moves D Alexander Edler (24 yrs old) & C Jordan Staal (22 yrs old) in exchange
for D Brent Seabrook (25 yrs old) )
There is no debating that Brent Seabrook is a solid Defensemen to add to the line up for Lucky Luc. He commands a
blue line with an 8.2 rating in overall defense, and more importantly a “9” shot block rating. He will be a very nice fit
for the current Bulldog squad, but I am not necessarily a big fan of Luc’s move here. I guess it all depends how long
Luc is planning on competing…1 year? Getting rid of 2 youngsters that have all the ability in the world to turn it
around is not the direction I would go. I think the trade value is fair, and both Edler and Staal will only bring you 40
to 50 games a piece; however, you can’t argue that both Edler and Staal could be very explosive this upcoming
season in the NHL. This would turn in a pretty good ranking for next year in the FHL, so I don’t know that I would do
it. Edler was traded for the blue line up in Buffalo in this past offseason, so he has a shot to anchor the blue line for
a very productive offense led by Vanek. Not to mention he is only 24 and still has quite a bit of upside still. The real
move I can’t get behind is moving Jordan Staal. He is solid center that has a ton of upside…but then I look at
Gatineau City’s roster of Centermen and it all makes sense. Jordan is best
served as a C on one of the top 2 lines, and Luc has Brad Richards and Matt Duchene. I still think that Luc benefits
from this trade greatly with Seabrook, but I like California’s acquisitions for the future better. I might even go as far
to say that I would sacrifice Berglund over Staal when it comes to upside.
(Trade: 14 Montreal sends LW Michael Cammalleri (28 yrs old) and it’s 1st Rd Pick to California in
exchange for C David Backes (26 yrs old) )
This is a very tough one for me to figure out. Out of all the trades I have analyzed, I am just not sold that this is really
fair value. Luckily, I am not the one that has to decide to approve these trades or not. A monster advantage goes to
California in this trade. Just look at the numbers, and not potential or injury prone numbers. Cammalleri is a
Captain and leader of the Habs for many years. He has spent some time injured, but you can argue the 2 way game
and slapshot that he has. He is worth a 7.3 rating in the game…respectfully so. We all know how valuable the 1st rd
pick has been to every team wheeling and dealing out there before the deadline. Centre, David Backes is a great
player on his own, and will bring a a pretty good 2 way game strength to Montreal. The numbers have him at 6.8
rating overall in offense, which is somewhat of a space between the 2 players. Once you add a very valuable 1st rd
pick into the mix that might net a 7 rated player, I just don’t see how Montreal was given value in return on this one.
Both players have a whopping 32 and 33 +/-, but even Cammalleri owns the 1 point higher on that unbelievable stat.
I guess to be fair before really pointing any fingers, it would be important to know who began the trade talks in the
first place.
(Trade 15: Exton trades D Eric Brewer (31 yrs old) to Montreal for LW Matt Cooke (32 yrs old) )
Ok, this is another one of those trades that would be nice to know who started the talks. Cooke doesn’t bring nearly
the ranking in the game overall like Brewer does at a 7.7. The value doesn’t seem very fair in return; however
“cookie” as he is known to teammates is one of the hardest hitters and enforcers in the game. It is the intangible
that makes this trade a little closer than it looks. Matt Cooke is a mean SOB that many other players in the league
don’t want to scrap with at times. I commend Jeff on filling in another piece of the puzzle needed for his
championship run, but again he has retracted to trading off a very valuable blue liner. Maybe it is speculation, but
could it be a blue liner he is seeking in the 1st rd with one of those picks. I will be anxious to see how it plays out, but
sorry Jeff, a D 7.7 ranking is quite a bit to get rid of. The winner of this one is Montreal.
(Trade16: Gatineau City sends F Eric Nystrom (27 yrs old) to Exton in exchange for 5 th Rd Pick )
This trade looks to be another depth trade, but smart move on Gatineau’s part in getting a pick back for a player that
might have ended up on their cut list. Jeff again makes a move with one of those extra draft picks for a great depth
guy in Nystrom. He is very durable and will give you a 7 hit rank along with
a ** on the PK. I believe the slight edge will go to Gatineau though. That 5th rd pick should be able to land a
player with a higher ranking overall than Nystrom’s 3.8.
(Trade 17: Exton sends D Sami Lepisto (26 yrs old), D Ian White (26 yrs old), RW Chris Neil (31 yrs
old), F Eric Nystrom (27 yrs old), C Brayden Schenn (19 yrs old), and their 3 rd Rd. Pick to Johnstown in
exchange for D Sergei Gonchar and RW/LW Louis Eriksson (25 yrs old) )
Wow, that even took up 3 lines just to get the trade written out. Let’s look a little closer at this one, but instead
of picking a winner…I am going to leave it up to you after hearing some interesting facts that these players bring
to their respective teams. First, Finnish D man, Sami Lepisto will rank 5.8 on overall defense this year and be
nothing more than depth for Johnstown. D Ian White is a great offensive defenseman to pick up for the Chiefs.
I have seen this kid play back in his Maple Leaf days when my cousin was skating 3rd line C with him. His rookie
season in the NHL, Ian finished 2nd among rookies in scoring defense. He brings a 7 shot block rating to the
game this season, and still has plenty left to give to a squad. RW Chris Neil is one of the most effective
enforcers in the game. He won’t bring more than a 4.8 in offense, but he will pack a punch (literally). He will
also take one as evidence in the gaps in his teeth. He will give the Chiefs a bone clattering “9” ranking in hitting.
Eric Nystrom, as explained in the trade before, will be nothing more than depth; however, he brings a “7” rank
in hitting as well. One interesting note about Eric is that he is the Son of Ranger great Bob Nystrom who raised
Lord Stanley’s Cup 4 times. C Brayden Schenn is this little poker chip that has been passed around twice now in
these offseason trades. I am thinking that Johnstown really wanted this piece of the puzzle even though he
won’t be used in this upcoming FHL season. We already analyzed his stats in the last issue, so what else is there
to say about the guy. I can find one thing at least. Imagine next season that Schenn pans out for a very high
rank in the FHL as predicted, he could be centering a line with great, Alexander Ovechkin. Finally the Chiefs
receive a late 3rd rd pick with the bevy of other players listed above. That pick should be good for a 5 to 6
ranked player at any position.
In return, Exton builds key pieces to their team to help compete for this year. D Sergei Gonchar is a name that
most people will recognize. Not only has he won a cup, but he has turned in a eye opening (8) over 50 pt
seasons in the NHL. He brings a 6.9 D rating in the game and an unbelievable “8” shot block to the Igloos. Jeff
also picked up LW/RW Louie Eriksson who had his first All Star Appearance last year, and can really lift the puck
around the net. He brings a 6.5 offensive rating, but an ever important takeaway skill at “7”. I really like who
Exton picked up, but I don’t know if I like getting rid of blue chipper, Brayden Schenn. What do you guys think?
I will leave it up to you to decide on the last minute blockbuster trade. One things for certain, youth has been
the dominant force in all these trades we have seen for the last 2 months, both in players and picks. Have a
fantastic draft, and let’s play some hockey!

Action PC! Hockey Installation Tips:
When you download the patch from DKS to Windows Vista many of you will get the dreaded
blocked since not “System Administrators.” Well here is the solution to your problems:
Extract hockey2011.exe patch from the zip file into a different folder that is not inside the c:\program
files\hockey2011 subdirectory. Then in Windows Explorer, select (highlight) the patch file in the different
folder you extracted it into, right click the file, then click <copy > and then locate and paste into the correct
game directory c:\program files\hockey2011. I have attached a screen shot file for you to see how I get past
the dreaded "blocked by administrative privileges" message. If you can’t read it below I can send it
separately via email to you.
After the installation, restart the APC! Hockey game, then you will be taken to the start up screen for
Action PC! Hockey. Be sure to click on the <HELP> button at the top of the main game screen and
then select click on the drop down menu <ABOUT>. You should then see a message entitled
ACTION PC HOCKEY; current game file: 9/3/2011. If you don’t see this, then the patch is NOT
installed.
I will be glad to assist telephonically if you are having any troubles getting the patch to work. Please
see the screen shot picture below to see what was done.

The FHL Draft is finally upon us!!! Now we can put our best laid plans into action.
This is going to sound like a cliché but it is so true: The Great Dynasties are built on a
great draft. The ones who can make successful picks in rounds 2-6 are the ones
who will be consistently successful. These suggestions may sound simple to some
but it is still worth a quick look. And for the newbie’s I hope it helps. Without further
adieu let’s get into it!
Draft Day Suggestions:
#1. Remember, drafts never go as planned. No combat plans survive the first
contact in battle. Bad things happen and your plans must be flexible. Remember
being flexible doesn't mean you lose sight of the objective goals of the team
you wish to create. Stay with your goals and don't be jerked back and forth in
different directions. On the other hand sit loose in the saddle. Opportunity may
knock and you don’t want to be so inflexible you don’t seize it!
#2. Create a list of positions with spaces for top 10 defensemen, 10 Centers, 10
Left and 10 Right wingers and 10 goalies. Next to each have 7 columns - NHL
Team, GP, TOI/game, Goals, Assists, Points, and personal grading of your player.
Calendar of Events
This will help you keep track of your roster and make sure your minutes and games
are covered.
FHL Rookie and Free Agent
Draft: September 5-11
#3. Remember leadership shows motivation and work ethic! So create a list of all
the NHL Captains and Assistant Captains - You seldom go wrong when picking one
of them.
FHL Start of Season: As
early as Friday September 16
and as late as Saturday
October 1 inclusive.
#4. As your turn in the draft approaches check off all the players already drafted
then make up a short list at least equal in length to the number of picks until
yours.
Regular Season Ends April
2011.
FHL Post Season April-May
FHL Crystal Finals May/June
#5. Also utilize the resources available in Action! PC Sports Hockey game database
itself. It is an amazing treasure for information unto itself. Don't just look
at the usual stats but take advantage of the less glamourous stats that Action!
PC Hockey uses: ex. hits, takeaways, giveaways, blocks, breakaway/penalty shots,
etc. They are useful to know as well and are also utilized heavily in the game.
As a tip, I actually went to a copier place and had both the users manual and
strategy guide printed in hard copy and bound. It cost me about $9 for each
book but it is well worth it to me to be able to write notes and highlight
inside the book.
Please note since this is an untimed draft will start this evening at a more leisurely
pace. If you know who you are going to take then go ahead and pick this evening.
