As I reflect on 2012, I am humbled and filled with gratitude.
This year has been marked by growth, innovation, provision and
collaboration. In 2012 we opened a new office space, grew our
Board of Directors, hosted our inaugural educational Fall
conference, launched “The Story Project,” advanced
our technology systems, invested in opportunities for staff to
deepen relationships, and were honored for our culture of
compassionate care. In 2012 we provided 8,386 counseling
sessions for 1,061 individuals. Our goal is to ensure that every
client who seeks our help receives excellent, timely care.
Please consider ways you may want to partner with us in 2013 so
we can continue to provide a place of refuge for those who are
hurting. To learn more about The Refuge Center, please visit our
website at therefugecenter.org. You can also follow us on Twitter

Sincerely,
Amy Alexander

COMPASSION
As I think back on the blessing of 2012, I am grateful to our heavenly Father for His faithful
provision and guidance. In 2012, The Refuge Center saw tremendous growth and change,
all guided by a committed Board, strong strategic plan and faithful Executive Director. We
continued to be blessed with more opportunities to serve individuals and families. To
facilitate this growth, we were blessed to open a new office space in Franklin that
provides a welcoming, comfortable and peaceful environment. Clients and staff alike
have been grateful for the blessing of this new space. 2012 was a year of new beginnings on two additional fronts. The inaugural Refuge
Center conference was a huge success, and we are excited to see how this event grows
and opens up new opportunities to serve the community. In addition, “The Story Project”
was launched. This video project provides several clear windows into what actually
happens within the day to day work of our staff and clients. These stories of HOPE
are powerful examples of the sacred work to which God has called The Refuge Center. I am humbled to serve alongside committed staff and board members, as well as strong
community partners and churches in pursuing the mission of The Refuge Center. Sincerely,
Roger Johnson
Refuge Center Board President

INSPIRING
Finding Your Way When
Things Get Lost in Translation
On September 28, The Refuge Center for Counseling launched its inaugural
conference—“Communication conundrum: Finding your way when things get lost
in translation.” The conference featured keynote speaker Dr. Ted Klontz and was
designed to help attendees explore barriers to communication and identify ways to
remove them, whether it be at work or at home.
Participants felt the event was “practical, personal, thought provoking and
strikingly professional.” The event also raised more than $7,000 that will directly
support The Refuge Center and the many individuals, couples and families in
need whom it serves.

SHARING GOD’S LOVE
WITH A HURTING WORLD
ONE PERSON AT A TIME...
FEMALE, AGE 46: “This is the safest place I know. It helps you not feel alone. It gives you hope and help.
I need what is offered here — therapy, meds, and a sliding scale. My income was very low, and I was not
turned away. This is so important! I refer people here. There are so many that need this center. Thank
you for everything!”
FEMALE, AGE 57: “I am so blessed to have had my counselor to accompany me on my journey to
recovery. She has offered the compassion and understanding of a real friend while maintaining her
professional boundaries. I highly recommend The Refuge Center and their wonderful counselors to
anyone who has lost their way and needs help to get their life back on track. Trust the counselors and
the information and tools that they give you. Use them daily. Your life will turn around. You will be
amazed. Again, thanks to my counselor for sharing all her wisdom and knowledge. I will forever be
grateful.”
PARENT OF 11 YEAR OLD CLIENT: “Bringing my daughter to The Refuge Center for counseling has been
an amazing experience for her. Under the caring and gentle hand of her therapist, she has learned how to
gain the strength within herself to manage difficult situations at home and at school and sort out confusing
adult behavior. She trusts this place and has found comfort in being here. I will keep bringing her for as
long as she needs and wants to.”
FEMALE, AGE 61: “I was afraid to go to a counselor. I thought it would take long and cost too much to
explain to a counselor about my life and all the problems I’ve had being that I am 61. One desperate day
I dialed the number. Sometimes I ask myself why did I wait so long, but then I realize that in God’s timing,
He allowed it to happen at this time. Money was a problem, but with the sliding scale amount I felt like I
could handle it. The counselor knew exactly how to guide me by asking me questions to figure out what my
real problems were stemming from. I found out that ‘I’m good enough’ even though someone rejected me
40 years ago and that I am much better off because they did. If you are scared to go to a counselor, let me
assure you, wait no longer and give The Refuge Center a try. They are up on the most effective and
newest counseling techniques. I am so grateful for them.”
MALE, AGE 37: “The counseling at The Refuge Center has made me a believer in the healing power of
God. I can’t thank God enough for putting my counselor and the Refuge in my life.”
FEMALE, AGE 40: “After my husband was arrested for domestic assault and then a week later filed for
divorce, it was so nice to know that with little money, my four kids and I had a place to go where we could
receive the counseling service we needed. It was a huge relief to find a counselor to work with my 10 year
old who kept everything inside. Our counselor was able to get him to open up and share feelings through
fun games like tic-tac-toe, basketball, and a wonderful ‘happy bag’. After forcing him to go to his first
session, my son never complained or resisted coming back. Thank you for the sliding-fee scale and for
being here in Franklin.”

THE REFUGE CENTER RECOGNIZED FOR COMPASSIONATE CARE
This past fall, the Center for Nonprofit Management recognized The Refuge Center for Counseling
as a finalist for the Baptist Healing Trust Compassionate Care Award, which is designed to honor a
nonprofit where love and compassion characterize its delivery of service. As a finalist, The Refuge
Center received a $5,000 grant, and its culture of compassionate care was highlighted at
“Salute to Excellence”—the largest nonprofit awards dinner in the country.

In late 2012, The Refuge Center for
Counseling launched “The Story Project”—an

THE REFUGE CENTER
GOES “PAPERLESS”
In order to provide the most efficient and
effective services to our clients, The Refuge
Center went “paperless” this year and
transitioned from the use of paper client files
to an Electronic Medical Records system. We
are pleased to be working with Infinite
Practice in this process. This highlights one
more area The Refuge is providing cuttingedge services.
Refuge Center clients as they tell their stories
of hope. The debut video featured Refuge
Center client Betty, who is known to many as
“The Miracle Lady.” After being beat, stabbed
and left for dead by her husband in 2011, she
was revived five times, and she lived to tell
her story. The stories of several other clients
will be shared throughout 2013 as an effort
to bring a greater awareness of the hope and
healing that can be found within The Refuge
Center’s walls.
