McDowell Everlasting Memories, Volume 1, Issue 5 An Excerpt from Bishop Shelton’s Last Sermon Shelton was a brilliant man, in more ways than one. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Rutgers University, he was extremely charismatic and able to motivate people like no other. Bishop Shelton was born April 18, 1929 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He had two siblings. Bishop Shelton adopted seven sons and one daughter . This broadcast is coming to you from the National and International Convention of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, and I happen to know that it is a great name and a great place— the greatest, really! It is where all nations must come—I do not care what color you are or say you are; what language you speak whatever it is. Come thou with us for we will do thee good for the Lord has spoken wonderfully concerning you. (It is not the way the scripture is written, but it is what it means)—that the Lord has spoken well about us. He has. He says, we are His church. He says we shall be or we have been redeemed. He said our children shall be holy. He says we shall be holy—yes He does now. He says that we will inherit eternal life. He says things that are pleasing to man. Lord hath spoken well concerning us. We pray for all the saints everywhere, every diocese and every place. We pray for your home. We pray for your travel, going and coming. We pray that when you open your eyes that you will find peace and power, love and tranquility. God bless you in the name of the Lord He said, we are journeying to Jesus Christ, who is God a place—going to the promise Almighty, world without end. land. What did the Lord tell him? Well, children, I’ve come “Come thou with us, and we home to you. If at any time you want to know if the Lord is listening to a mere, request, a cry, a moan, or just a thought, Elder Jerral, the ‘prayer intercessor’ will pull down the answer. This gift did not come to Elder Jerral by osmosis, yet, instead, by an illness that lead him to the lilies where prayer was translated. “While in the valley, pick the lilies…” he hears Apostle Patterson say while in the hospital not knowing whether he existed in the world or not. Even today, this testimony rests dear to the Elder and resonates within his soul as he incessantly thanks the Lord for answering his prayers. And with this gift, he not only prays for his wife and children, but lends his members to the Body of Christ. Without hesitation, the Elder will pray upon request—tarry with a saint all night long until an answer is revealed. Holy Ghost, and keeping me in focus…I take him at his word,” says Sister Charise Whitt concerning her experience in prayer with Elder Jerral. How many of us know the multitude of words the Elder croons concerning the Man of God? “Oh thou Man of God…Bless him, Lord…Thy Servant, Lord!...Look after the Apostle…his prayer has already gone before us…while we’re one in the spirit….tell God to make us one with him.” A unity indeed joined by God, Elder and wife, Carrie Patterson proved miracles still occur. Apostle Patterson. How many of us can testify to “I just feel secure by him keeping in touch with the Man of God, and the Spirit, how we are witnesses that you can do anything…we are your witnesses that you can change bodies…Thank you Almighty God…while we’re one in the Spirit…while “How many of us we have a chance to know the touch’ya—just to touch’ya… multitude of words then I’ll know Elder croons it’ll be concerning the alright…we know when we Man of God?” get to ‘Amen,’ we won’t be the same…One, in the Spirit…while you’re up here, go get your answer now…Hallelujah to God…why would you make another step, and he has shown God to us, and you did not touch God? How many times has his words been true to you—every time. Queen, this is another opportunity…come on Gainer! Why would you leave this station and we won’t tell God ‘thank you?!’ Bishop S. McDowell Shelton, 1929-1991 Bishop S. McDowell Shelton succeeded Bishop Johnson in 1961 and preached the gospel to many nations for more than 30 years. Bishop Shelton’s ability to speak many languages gave him the opportunity to meet a variety of international leaders, promote the beliefs of the Church around the world, and increase overall membership by giving other nations the opportunity to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ in their native tongue. This skill, along with his uncanny ability to build relationships, afforded him the opportunity to become the Consulate General to the country of Lesotho and gain the status as a world- renowned Christian leader. A PhD-level psychologist, self-taught pianist and talented songwriter, he uplifted the Church in a manner that no one can ever forget. Continuing to build on the legacy of truth established by Bishop Johnson, he led and grew a congregation of thousands. Just as the signs of later apostles followed them, many miracles were witnessed during his leadership: he healed the sick, raised the dead, made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. Bishop S. McDowell Shelton sings about Coming Home during his last sermon at the National and International Convention: IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I’VE BEEN TRAVELING, BUT NOW I CAN SAY, I’M COMING ON HOME. IT’S BEEN SOME BAD DAYS—I FELT ALL ALONE, FINALLY THE DAY HAS COME, AND I’VE COME HOME. COME HOME, BLESSEDNESS, WITH ME. COME HOME, BLESSEDNESS, WITH ME. COME HOME, BLESSEDNESS, WITH ME. COME HOME, BLESSEDNESS, AND SEE— COME HOME, AND I WILL, WILL REMEMBER THEE. COME HOME! Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death among Americans, and the sixth leading cause of death from disease. Many of its complications can be controlled by eating healthy. Here are a few healthy eating tips to help control diabetic issues: Eat healthy carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are your body’s main energy source. About half of your daily calories should come from carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes (beans, peas and lentils), and low-fat dairy products. Choose food rich in fiber. Dietary fiber includes all parts of plant foods that your body can’t digest or absorb. There are two types of fiber: insoluble— increases the movement of material through your digestive system and soluble—dissolves water to form a gellike material to help lower blood sugar levels (found in peas, oats, beans, apples, citrus, fruits, carrots, barley and psyllium). heart-healthy diet is important. Get no more than 7% of your daily calories from saturated fat, and try to avoid trans fat completely. Use low-fat substitutions for butter, margarine or shortening. For example, instead of using butter on a baked potato, use low-fat yogurt. When you do use fat, choose monounsaturated fats (olive oil or canola oil) or polyunsaturated fats (found in nuts and seeds). Limit saturated and trans fats. If you have diabetes, you are at higher risk of heart disease and stroke because diabetes accelerates the development of clogged and hardened arteries. Therefore, a Curb dietary cholesterol. When too much cholesterol is in your blood, fatty deposits in your blood vessels develop. These deposits make it difficult for enough blood to flow through the arteries. To keep cholesterol under control, consume no more than 200 milligrams of cholesterol a day. The most concentrated sources of cholesterol include organ meats, egg yolks and whole milk products. Use lean cuts of meat, egg substitutes and skim milk. Eat fish at least twice a week. Fish can be a good alternative to high-fat meats. Many types of fish, including cod, tuna and halibut, have less total fat and saturated fat and cholesterol than meat and poultry. Salmon, mackerel and herring are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and promote heart-health. Avoid fried fish and fish with high levels of mercury (tilefish, swordfish, and king mackerel). -Source Mayo Clinic Prayer Intercessor, Elder Jerral cont’d Bishop Shelton dances before the Lord. He lifted the church with spiritual messages through song. “I might as well tell God thank you now…Oh Man of God, I might as well tell you thank you now, ‘cause when you get me to God…Hallelujah all the time! I want to thank God for you!...When I get to God, I’ll be what God is!...You kept your word…what is the petition now, that God can’t answer it?!...Now tell God to do it…I know He will…In the mighty name of Jesus Christ…as he cues Apostle Patterson into the prayerful song, “Lord do it, Lord do it, Lord do it for me!” Can not you see the rejoicing of the saints from the words on this page? Does it not stir up in your memory how the Elder keeps us in the presence of God until we begin praising Him in anticipation of deliverance from this life—the knowing that one day we WILL be like Him?! Elder Jerral Patterson, an amalgamation of spirit and prayer. How many times has he interceded for you? I sit in reverie, in chagrin as I recall the countless nights I’ve witnessed for myself the prayers Elder has told me God hears…the times he’s stepped in for me…the encouraging words to bring me through…the waiting…the uplifting…planting my feet, and patching my net as to not fall back into the pit. I too, bear witness to Elder Jerral’s gift— The Prayer Intercessor There’s One Church. There’s One God. Bishop Shelton held his Jubilee service beginning May 7, 1979. Elder Samuel Green of Jacksonville, FL provided us with an original copy of the jubilee packet that was sent to each saint titled “Infallible Proofs”. The Jubilee was a time of prayer and mediation.
