SURVIVAL AFTER DEATH THE BELASCO SÉANCE CHALLENGE CARCOSA COLLECTION CHALLENGE III: SURVIVAL AFTER DEATH THE BELASCO SÉANCE CHALLENGE [Playing off an old gramophone… the voice of Emeric Belasco:] Welcome to my house. I'm delighted you could come. I'm certain you will find your stay here most illuminating. Think of me as your unseen host, and believe that during your stay here I shall be with you in spirit. May you find the answer that you seek. It is here, I promise you. And now, auf Wiedersehen. 2 This Carcosa Collection Competition involved creating mystery performances that involve the “Mount Everest of Haunted Houses…” The Belasco House…. HELL HOUSE. If you haven’t read the novel… DO SO NOW. If you haven’t seen the film… DO SO NOW. If you can get the tribute book to Richard Matheson… get it and read “Return to Hell House” and enjoy… Please also visit our Belasco Bequest display in the permanent exhibits of the Carcosa Collection galleries. Ben Fischer: What's to tell? The house tried to kill me. It almost succeeded. 3 Four brave souls enter the foreboding, windowless Belasco house, nicknamed "Hell House," to conduct an experiment determining the existence of survival after death. The lone survivor from the disastrous previous investigation, a physical medium named Ben Fisher, reluctantly agrees to spend a few days in the house along with mental medium Florence Tanner and physicist Lionel Barrett and his wife, Ann (Edith in the novel). Their first two psychic sitting sessions prove to be hostile and violent, leading Lionel to suspect that Florence may be either causing the manifestations or is being used by some force in the house - perhaps its debauched owner, Belasco, who vanished under mysterious circumstances years ago. Florence claims to receive nightly visits from Belasco's previously unknown son, who had died in the house, and the mystery gradually deepens as each day becomes more perilous to the investigator's lives. Of course, there is the perverted presence in the steam room…. The caveman with boils… the twin sisters with a penchant for sadomasochistic play… the poltergeists… and a legion of other horrors lurking in the shadows of the accursed edifice. During the investigation, various influences begin to affect the investigators’ personal weaknesses. Hell House's potency comes from its apparent ability to corrupt those who enter its walls, before bringing about their destruction, both mental and physical. 4 The Legend of Hell House was one of the original ghost films to inject overt sexuality as a necessary part of its storyline. Significantly, even after the film is over the audience is not certain that Ann's memorable "sleepwalking" episode and Florence's seduction were in fact caused by the supernatural. Furthermore, both men are depicted as stodgy and repressed, which could explain why both women respond in such a carnal fashion to the influence of ghosts. Written by legendary Richard Matheson from his novel Hell House, this unnerving combination of psychic versus science investigation into a “haunted” house is something no selfrespecting mystery performer should overlook for performance inspirations! 5 THE CHALLENGE NOTE: Based on the nature of the book, its themes, and the prize, this particular contest is open only for 21+ year olds. Ann Barrett: What did he do to make this house so evil, Mr. Fischer? Ben Fischer: Drug addiction, alcoholism, sadism, beastiality, mutilation, murder, vampirism, necrophilia, cannibalism, not to mention a gamut of sexual goodies. Shall I go on? Ann Barrett: How did it end? Ben Fischer: If it had ended, we wouldn't be here. The challenge was this: create a routine that is a tribute to HELL HOUSE. The setting does not have to be in HELL HOUSE, as you can claim you have artifacts from that damned mansion… and that the dark influences live on in them… see below… Criteria for the judging are as follows: -Innovation -Ethos matches the Richard Matheson themes of the tale (science versus psychic with dark hidden drives of people all mixed about)… -Séance > Spook show -Practicality -Use of the items listed below -Suggested new items not listed below -Balanced restraint and taste within the context of these issues 6 THE PRIZE: The Belasco Curios Case may include… A hollow old book, with the smell of Absinthe (really) – can also be used ala Koran Medallion • A collection of old photographs of some of the guests of Hell House… clothed… and other… vintage photos (OOTW and other effects) • Absinthe spoon (Pendulum – a KOTAH idea) • Florence Tanner’s broken cross (Pendulum) • Ben Fisher’s Psychic Secret • Lionel Barrett’s plans for the Reverser (Buddha) • Daniel’s Ring (PK) • Rolf Randolph Deutsch memento • A menu of a typical dinner (as found in the kitchen) Menu – can be used for a prediction effect • A sample of ectoplasm (glows in the dark too) • A black cat tribute bead • The haunted keys to Hell House • The Shining (ooops wrong story... eh, close enough) old coin - compliments of Bill Montana • Spooky looking little statuette... for whispering effects and so on • E-files “Belasco’s Welcome” and “The Drive” … Maybe more… who knows for sure? Runner ups: Depended on the entries…. The Carcosian Tribunal will determine if anything is worth some recognition and rewards. 7 THIS WAS A DIFFICULT CHALLENGE As we know from our mystery websites, psychic versus science, sexuality issues… often devolve into debates which often lead to regression and bad behaviours. If you enter this competition, you must try to keep to the concept of respect for humanity… the reason Belasco is destroyed in the end is that he never learned these concepts… but I won’t ruin the story if you haven’t read it yet. Fischer: I know the score: you do not fight this house! Look, Hell House doesn't mind a guest or two. What it doesn't like are people who attack it. Belasco doesn't like it, his people don't like it, and they will fight back and they will kill you. So listen to me. You just leave that damn machine alone and you spend the rest of the week resting, doing nothing. When Sunday comes, you tell old Deutsch anything he wants to hear and bank the money. If you try anything else, you will be a dead man, with a dead wife at your side! 8 And now…. the entries: Fischer: I was the only one to make it out of here alive and sane in 1953, and I will be the only one to make it out of here alive and sane this time. 9 AN EVENING IN HELL HOUSE: THE RPG KOTAH/RON DAYTON & BALARAM/BILL ZUERNER Four friends are sent an invitation to an evening of interactive theatre and role playing, to be held in your home. They will be posing as members of an expedition to the legendary "Mt. Everest of Haunted Houses". A brief history of Hell House is given (Ben Fischer's summary from the book will work just fine), and the usual Role-playing rules are outlined. Participants are instructed to arrive in costume, and in character, for the event. In addition to the instructions above, each player will be given a summary of the character that has been selected for them, and a secret piece of information, which only they will see. The stated goal of the gathering is to find a mysterious box, contents unknown, which will answer a personal, urgent question for each player. For a variety of motivations, the answers they seek may be best learned in private--but the box must be found regardless. The Personality information provided is as follows: 10 1) PARAPSYCHOLOGICAL PHYSICIST Dr. Lionel Barrett EXTERNAL: An educated man of science, you are committed to resolve the ridiculous, pseudoscience nonsense propagated as "the Paranormal". The idea of 'Hauntings' by survival after death, is contemptuous. Wood is wood. A house, no matter how old, creaking, and poorly-lit, is only that. You are willing to dismiss anyone who disagrees with this as a fool--though your refined character forbids outright rudeness (usually). These matters are resolvable by Scientific Means-period. Survival after death is NONSENSE. Evil certainly does NOT live on. Oh yes, you are married, to a rather weak-minded woman, but aren't they all? INTERNAL: Maybe-MAYBE YOU ARE WRONG-? Something in that damn box will allow you to resolve this nagging and beneath-you weakness-ofa-doubt, empirically and once and for all. HIDDEN KNOWLEDGE: You have acquired a torn scrap of a letter. It says.."to the left of th..." 2) MOUSY WIFE Edith Ann Barrett EXTERNAL: As the wife of the renowned scientist, you have learned to blend into the background, and bow to the presence of your brilliant husband. You personify a noted lack of confidence, meek and shy, and fearful. You don't mind never being the center of attention, and it is an honor to be married to such a famous man! It's just perfect, really! His work is so important, you must be careful not to waste his time with any silly personal and petty needs. You have accompanied him to the event, because you do not like to be alone--the secret thoughts emerge then, those best not acknowledged. Really, you are fine! INTERNAL: Your intelligence equals your renowned husband. And you are hiding something... Although you love him, something is missing, seriously absent--lately, your thoughts have turnedunbidden!-to certain confused fantasies, and your dreams have taken a disturbing turn to the erotic--you are filled with fear that you may, in fact, be-Oh! Perversion! Not me, surely! Something in the box will cure you of this, you are convinced! HIDDEN KNOWLEDGE: You have a torn scrap of a letter. It says "...e fireplace under..." 11 3) THE SENSITIVE The Reverend Florence Tanner EXTERNAL: You are a woman of great Faith, pastor of your own Spiritualist Church, well-known, well-loved, and sought-out adviser on all matters lofty and spiritual. LOVE is the answer! GOD will find a way! Evil is but a SHADOW, to be resolved with COMPASSION and UNDERSTANDING! You willingly offer your services, for the LIGHT, for the CLEANSING, for the RELEASE of the suffering of ALL trapped Souls, wherever they reside. This is your calling, this is your purpose, this is your Faith! INTERNAL: Is Evil really so weak? Is your Faith strong enough for this House? Can you pass this test? The sacred items within the box will give you the needed protections, your Spirit Guide has assured you of this! HIDDEN KNOWLEDGE: You have a scrap of a letter-it reads "...the antique phonograph. The answers are there, I can assure you. For do you not trust me? Till we meet in person, EB" 4) WASHED-UP PSYCHIC Benjamin Franklin Fischer EXTERNAL: You are aloof, emotionally distant, and don't seem to like your fellow human beings very much. Highly intelligent, abrupt to the point of rudeness, you just don't have time to waste with the usual polite discourse. As a young man, you were filled with promise, almost a prodigy, with powerful psychic gifts, a gifted physical medium, sought out, a leader and teacher, living proof of the veracity of the hidden realms of the afterlife. Now, you live in isolation, with no friends, and few acquaintances. Some life-altering disgrace, an unresolved failure hangs over you. INTERNAL: Your psychic gifts are real. You have voluntarily stopped using them, you do not want to be singled out as a freak. You long for human contact, and are in fact quite compassionate and protective of others. You must hide this softer side, least anyone come too close, and discover your abilities. A disagreeable Clark Kent, who can never again become Superman. You are afraid of your potential, of yourself. Something in the box will give you a resolution for the past--you know this, you FEEL this! HIDDEN KNOWLEDGE: You have a torn letter page, which reads "Greetings my friends! Something wonderful awaits you, something prepared for you in my own study--will you seek it out? Is it time for the answers you most desire ? Yes, I know your needs--am I not the one who would? Do you have the courage to see them? Look carefully--do you locate the East wall? Now let your gaze move to..." 12 GAME PLAY PART 1: DISCOVERY Players should arrive at the same time, and begin interacting in character, immediately. The Performer may play the part of Butler initially, serving refreshments, and giving hints as needed to move the game along. Although initially they may want to discover the mysterious box only for their own use, it will soon become obvious that the scraps of letter must be combined to locate it. This should occur fairly quickly in play. The essential portion of the letter reads, " Now let your gaze move to the left of the fireplace under the antique phonograph." There they will find the mysterious locked box. (Of course this portion of the game may be made much more difficult, if you desire) Once the box is located, the phonograph begins to play. It is the voice of Belasco, using his welcoming speech from the audio file /movie soundtrack. GAME PLAY PART 2: TRIALS Once located, the Performer calls the players to the table. Along with the box, other items are present at the candle-lit table and surrounding area, various artifacts from the Belasco Mansion. On the table rests a small statuette of what may possibly be an angel, a small. old fashioned key, a single place-setting with the dinning ware smashed into shards, a broken wine glass, twisted cutlery. On the wall, a portrait of Emeric Belasco. Under this a single cane rests against the wall. The Performer speaks: "You have successfully completed the first task, that of cooperation and mutual trust. But you all have come with greater needs to resolve, hidden doubts, secret concerns. Do you have the will and courage to face these challenges? Have your weaknesses not tormented you enough? This house will break you--or, it will make you. Are you ready to take the next step in your belief, to step up in faith and face the truth about yourselves? Sometimes it takes more than a cane to allow us to move forward... {Cane falls} He knows you are here. Belasco was a cripple in life. Will you allow him to walk over you in death? " (Box is opened using the key--haunted key style if you prefer) 13 TEST 1: SCIENCE VS SUPERNATURAL "Will you begin, Dr. Barrett?..." "You don't believe any of this nonsense, do you Dr.? Is it time to, once and for all, dispel the foolish superstitious weaknesses and fears that have stunted Mankind from the beginning? Here, your own plans, the Scientific Method..." (The plans for the Reverser, folded Buddha paper style, are presented. Each layer is named as it is opened-) "Rational, Unbiased Observation... Theoretical Analysis... Process Experimentation.. And finally-The Truth" A small blank card is inscribed, mockingly, *Anyone there?*. It is refolded in the Scientific method papers. "Can superstition itself survive when confronted by the rational?" (The plans are unfolded) "And finally--the Truth!" The card is now blank. An ambiguous ending? A taunt from Belasco, as if to say "No, you're right, nobody here.."? Nothing further is said, as the player must decide for himself what this means. 14 TEST 2: SEXUAL IDENTITY "Mrs. Barrett? Are you ready?" (Several antique photographs from the erotic collection are placed in a row, face down. They are not shown. The use of a pendulum is described and demonstrated as necessary, and strong force suggestions are given.) "A tool to reveal the truth..." (Pendulum is placed over photos in turn. Should the force fail, Magician's Choice may be used to eliminate the unwanted photos.) "One photo has been singled-out-(The participant turns it over. It is a lesbian couple, perhaps the twins. The rejected photos are turned to reveal all hetero couples.) --though for choice--or rejection--only you know" TEST 3: FAITH VS EVIL "Miss Tanner..? Your courage is unquestionable--but what of your Faith? Are you prepared to put it to the ultimate test?" (The absinthe spoon is presented, along with the broken cross pendant, and Daniel Belasco's ring.) "Absinthe--used to lower the inhibitions, the resistance, to the depravities and vile corruptions of this house-- The cross--a bit worn, damaged and weakened, perhaps-? And the ring of Daniel Belasco--quite heavy and solid, isn't it?" (cross and ring are tied to the spoon, multibob style) 15 "It must be difficult, for one so sensitive, to be in close proximity to these items, let alone hold them--but then again, you have Faith - do you not?" (Player holds the spoon gripped lightly with one hand at each end.) "Take a deep breath--and release it, and with your heart, with all your strength, push OUT the darkness, into your exhaled breath, send it down your arms, and into the spoon--and now, we shall see.." (If the cross begins to move--"Yes! Your Faith is moving!" If the ring begins to move, or if neither--"Yes! Your Faith is steady!") "Now, Miss Tanner-move Belasco into the Light!" (The ring is moved towards the candle--in a flash, the ring drops to the table) "Have you freed yourself from Evil--or have you released it from the confines of Hell House?" METHOD: Small section of flash string is tied or waxed to the longer string, at the end you will tie the ring. ALTERNATIVE: A slip-tie knot may be used to allow the ring to drop under its own weight, though timing may be difficult. TEST 4: COURAGE "And you Mr. Fisher, memories of failure..? Is it time to give up your hopes for a better past? Would you like one last chance?..." (A Bag with the logo RD is opened. Shards from the broken dining ware are placed inside, in cadence..) Depravities of Belasco are recited while dropping the pieces inside " Drug addiction, alcoholism, sadism, beastiality, mutilation, murder, vampirism, necrophilia, cannibalism,... Shall I go on?" 16 (The small angel statuette is added) Innocents entered Hell House--did you protect them? Did you even try? Can the past be changed? Or can it be full-filled in the present-- do you have the courage to save them, NOW, this-very-moment? Reach inside, Mr. Fisher--brave the dangers--save them-- TRANSFORM failure to triumph--RELEASE the past-and REACH INSIDE...! (Hopefully he will do so! And without harm. Allow him to enjoy the moment) METHOD: Change bag, constructed from a tightly-woven Kevlar, a fabric designed to protect Police from knife attack. NB, This is experimental, I have not tested such a bag, and rely on your good judgment and your own careful experimentation to discover whether this is safe for your players or not. In addition, the cutlery shards may be somewhat "dulled" before use, or realistic and safer fauxshard replicas, Hollywood-style, may be used. In the statuette side--a few triangular shaped corn chips will nicely simulate real sharpness. NOTE FROM THE KEEPER: I have a feeling most people would not put their hand in such a bag… I would suggest switching bags completely to have potato chips and an angel… put some broken glass into a small plastic box to shake under the table to simulate shards shifting…. GAME OVER. DEBRIEF AND BRING OUT THE ABSINTHE! 17 18 " GIZMO COMPONENT CAST READING" (A concept for your consideration) KOTAH A special machine, a device built to rid Hell House of its evil had been constructed to Dr. Barrett's specifications. It had in fact been delivered to the Belasco House in several wooden crates. We know it had been turned on, still it is unclear if it had actually accomplished its task fully. The house still stands, but had the house been exorcized as he envisioned? What became of the equipment, was it abandoned or dismantled and sold as scrap? If the various components, of Barrett’s machine were available to us what secrets might they reveal? Individually, what would they mean? 19 Might they not be read like casting stones to speak of things unknown? During the cast or toss their relationship to one another/ their position or proximity has significance. Electrical plugs, machine screws and nuts are referred to in terms of male and female respectively. Light bulbs / LEDS could indicate an idea. Dials or knobs/meters would indicate change. Gears. pulleys or wheels indicate the world/ travel. Wires indicate connections or ties/ being grounded. Magnets mean either attracted or repelled; being drawn to something or drawing something to yourself; Liking something or finding it repulsive. Fuses/ diodes indicate energy flow or control Switches have to do with starting or stopping. Microphones / speakers mean listening or hearing/ receiving or sending messages. Needles for gauges show energy levels/ direction Thermometers or pressure gage, comfort levels/ degrees of difficulty felt Red warning light covers speak of danger, green of course means go, yellow caution. Bells, buzzers and whistles are warning devices too' or telling us to wake up/ be more aware! Barrel key locks mean security, the key for it mans access/ entry. The object nearest another item which has a gender affiliation; tells the reader if the meaning will apply to a male or a female, or if it will involve one sex or another/ possibly both! Imagine developing such a Steampunk style Gizmo reading for yourself Imagine its potential to enhance the experience of a Belasco themed séance . Link the information of the reading to the characters investigating Hell House. Dr. Barrett, Edith, Florence or Benjamin; or to spectators participating in a roll playing scenario. Much like the feral black cat which roamed the Belasco estate, the direction and path you follow is of your own choosing. Consider the possibilities of breaking new ground. The idea of SCIENCE predicting the future--through a reading of scientific instrument parts, and new take on the reading controversy, scientific atheists vs. psychics-- combined, UNITED in a way that will piss them both off! 20 "ONLY THE LEGEND IS LIKELY TO SURVIVE " KOTAH The well manicured lawn of the sprawling Belasco estate had a quiet , serene beauty. Beauty which belied atrocities occurring in that accursed house. One granite griffin stood at either side of the wrought iron gated entrance Only the road it seems dared to approach the home of Emeric Belasco. Protective silent, loyal feathered sentries they guarded day and night. Their stone hearts, cold and unfeeling allowed them to endure their vigil. 21 Or were they in fact demonic vultures listening for a splash in the near by tarn? Under nights cover scampering to scavenge tender morsels floating near the edge? The darkness of night come morning light became the shadow of the humongous house. A melding of fortress , fairy castle keep, mausoleum, ominously it towered. Behind its thick gray walls, bricked windows, massive door , his guests eventually cowered. Seduced by power, wealth and opulence, willing sheep of clay manipulated and molded. Pawns participating in a game of madness and debauchery as slowly it unfolded. Too late then for the players trapped in Belasco's blood stained Roman Coliseum . Their dying anguished moans a , requiem trapped within the walls and halls of Bedlam. Naked and starving eventually, they descended further into, cannibalistic depravity. They had become animals and little more, herded like cattle to madness , murder or suicide. The catacombs of Hell House became putrid sewers of bodies, lost souls and suffering. 22 The stench of blood, death, rotted flesh and human waste hung moist and heavy in the air. So moist and thick is it, each breath creates the horrific sensation of drowning. A sensation here- to- for experienced only by the helpless young discarded in the bog. From womb to doom at the discretion, the demented whim of their own father, Emeric. A man, sadistic and cold enough to chain his own son behind a wall where in time he died, became mummified. Sans fingerprints or DNA only by the initials on his ring would Robert Belasco be identified. A lead lined room adjacent to his perverted mocking chapel was discovered. The room was Emeric’s final resting place and tomb, where his last secret is uncovered. The Belasco House stands to this very day but in time, all things succumbed to gradual decay. The house may crumble to rotted wood, mortar dust , mounds of fallen stone eventually. But the Legend of Hell House and its horrors will most likely never fade away. Ironically in their way, they achieve the secret to ' Survival ' for which Deutch's money could never pay. 23 M.O. A hollow book has been sitting on your table. Opening it, fifteen small articles are removed and placed upon the table. The first thing removed is a sealed envelope, which is handed to a spectator to hold for safe keeping. The second item removed is a list of names and words pertaining to the Hell House investigation. The remaining thirteen items are small keepsakes taken from the Belasco house by Ben and Edith. A small angel statue, a candle, a cross, a coin, a ring with the initials RB on it ;Dried flowers, part of a broken phonograph record, and assorted photos of female guests in varied stages of dress and undress etc. All of these items are placed in a row upon the table. One of the names or words on the list is freely selected. You spell that name/ word out by starting at one end of the row of items and touching the first item as you say the first letter in the name or word. This is repeated with the second object and the second letter in the chosen word etc. When you arrive at the final letter of the word, the object you have touched last , matches the prediction in the envelope the spectator has been holding. The word list contains the following suggested words: A Roaring Giant Lead Lined Room Emeric Belasco Thirteen Drown Robert Belasco Incestuous Boy Poison Berries Prosthetic legs Victrola Plays Fifty-four Died Accursed House Stone Griffin Investigation Belasco Estate Survival Proof Twisted Chapel Bricked Window Vicious Feline Benjamin -Edith 24 "IN DREAMS ENVISIONED" KOTAH ( Benjamin Fischer's Insights and a Challenge ; In fifty plus lines , one for each victim of the Belasco House ) In night dreams I envisioned Funerary Art, in the form of poorly constructed floral arrangements. Clues concealed perhaps in the placement of assorted potpourri, poisonous plants and roots. Illusions given birth by hallucinogens ingested in beverages and meals consumed. Adding even more realism to each scene played out in Belasco's theater of madness and the macabre. The thick green fog and its chill portended doom , like some visual device used by Cecil B. DeMille. Drugs which animated, agitated, inmate guests of this asylum of the mind to even darker depravity. Inside the tomes Belasco read dried flowers discovered pressed between the pages. Dear Florence thought perhaps the first letter of each formed an anagram of some sort. Based on descriptions of Emeric, his curling lip, pale complexion his aversion to the sun. One could dream the Poppy, Rose, Orchid, Peony, Yarrow, Heather, Ranculus, Iris and Asapanthus would scream ' Porphyria , but sadly they did not. What fools in retrospect were we to have entered the monolithic lair of this demented beast. Windows bricked shut not to block the sun, but to transform a prison into a tomb for minds and souls. 26 In its vast labyrinth did he feast on the fried placenta of those submerged in the slime rimmed tarn? They were' his ' unwanted naked helpless kittens, tossed and left to sink. Innocent voices heard by my minds ear , taunting children sing Ring Around The Rosie. The lilting lyrics stirring phantoms of another time and place of death. The flowers like the guests Belasco picked were once beautiful and alive. In yet another folly involving anagrams, I assumed; The initials on the mummified bodies ring stood for Daniel Belasco. His name was coupled with the word "Believe" It creates the following anagram: " Bible Denial Solace Eve " I still find myself sorting through the possible meanings and ramifications of that. The name Daniel means , God Judges . The name Emeric means ,Home Ruler. As ruler of his domain, did he in his mind also see himself as Judge, juror and omnipotent God as well? Was the solace eve the event, the execution of his own son? Chained within a wall, Daniel's mouth stuffed with berries which would kill . Air currents in a connected crawl space, over time slowly mummifies. He the first of two eyes which offended Emeric , and had to be removed. For this Beast, each Beauty's fate , balanced precariously on the blind scales of Justice, Libra or Ma'at. For myself at this time in my life, the weight of guilt tips the scales against me. Guilt of having survived while others were lost is a crushing weight indeed. If Edith had been lost during the final battle, Belasco may well have triumphed once again. Surviving once could be attributed to luck or fate, but 'twice' seems more like destiny to me. I do not believe Emeric Belasco has or will experience survival of any kind after death. I have been misquoted, and would like to correct the record. I never said, "Lionel and Florence would guide Belasco to the afterlife without fear. I am confident his final destination will bring more torment than even he is able to endure. The name Lionel means Lion. 27 Edith means prosperous in war. Florence means blossoming and charming. Benjamin means ,son of my right hand. Is there meaning to be found in facts such as these? Do our names influence our deeds, be they good or evil? Such a determination is not mine to make. I have certain objects which may be able to reveal much more. A hand full of mementos liberated from the place the locals all called Hell House. I took Daniels ring from with in Florence’s clutched hand myself. No reason the last thing she clutched, touched, should have belonged to a Belasco. All have been kept in a hollow book which once resided among the stack Edith had discovered. She and I have used them since. to make contact with the many who have passed to the other side. Calling each by name in hopes they will give some sign of having heard. Are they eternally alive, did they each indeed survive . Would any present , care or dare to join me in an experiment today? Will you call their name to see what they do or say? If empty the contents out upon the table, will you accept the challenge? -------------------------------A ceramic angel is placed upon the table. A candle similar to those the team used when first entering the house is placed in a holder, lighted and set near by. Just the sort of illumination every seeker desires. The angel watches as mute witness. A slip of paper with names of victims written on it is shown. The last item taken from within the hollow book is a ring with the initials DB upon it. The ring is threaded on a slender silver chain. The spectator holds one end of the chain as the ring is allowed to hang like a pendulum at the other end. 28 as a name is read aloud from the ring and chain begin to move in accordance to the gender of the person named, indicating contact has indeed been made. The slip of paper is folded to form a smaller packet which is touched to the candle flame to vanish in a blinding flash. The list is gone, but the names the people and their memory remain. Having been spoken, they return to us again in the here and now. 29 30 The KEY Essence of Evil Willem Stapelberg Father worked for Mr. Emeric Belasco at his house as a locksmith and he had to pick locks nearly every day he was there. Father taught me to be a locksmith too here is my lock pick set. Father was a big man but Mr. Belasco was even bigger and many called Mr. Belasco "The Roaring Giant." Mr. Belasco always had black clothes on and did some very strange things in his chapel. Father said that there were always guests in the house and they drank a lot and used drugs. The servants called Mr. Belasco "Evil Emeric' behind his back and most of them left after a few days. The Belasco house was six miles from the tiny community of Caribou falls on a gravel road of Highway 16. The house was big and had forty rooms a poolroom, chapel and much more. Father said that there were a lot of statues some very scary gargoyles and some of very pretty nude woman that he liked. This hollow book I have here has some of the gifts father was given by scared guests after he had to pick some locks of there doors that would not open. Father said that he thought the guests were drunk and did not know what they were doing most of the time. This hallowed out book has some strange symbols on and is locked by a padlock. The key went missing after father’s death and I will have to pick the lock to open it. 31 Do you smell the strange smell coming out of the hollowed out old book now that I have picked it and it's open? let me take out the key first. This key was the master key with a number 7734 on it to all the rooms in the house but it would only work sometimes and father kept it as a souvenir. Father used to hold the key on his hand palm and the key would turn all by it self like its doing in my hand now. Let me take out the small box with the glass eye on top of it. The small box was given to father one night by a pretty lady that screamed that there was some thing in the room that wanted to get into bed with her. Her nails was broken and there was blood on the door were she scratched the door to get out. The pretty lady had a pentagram necklace and father said that she was a medium. This little weird box with the glass eye father got from the medium lady is open now and there is nothing in lets put the key in it and see if it has any magical powers. Now that its closed let me open it again. The key is gone! This can not be let me close it again and then lets open it. The key is back in the box and not gone it must have been my imagination. One afternoon father had to open a door for a balled professor who was stuck in the poolroom. The professor was shaking bad and said that there was a shadow in the darkness looking at him the whole time he was locked in the poolroom. The professor gave father this purple hanky with some strange symbols on it. Father says that the man was a psychotherapist. Let me put this key in the hanky of the professor and see what happens. Suddenly the key moves in the hanky. No no this can not be I don't believe in ghosts and spirits it must be my imagination. Father passed the indoor chapel once and saw Mr. Belasco standing in a magick circle with some strange items on an altar there was a knife, bell, wand with a crystal in and some other things and a dead cat on the altar. Father said he heard a word "Athame" too. Father said he later took the knife, bell, wand and altar clothe to sell at a second hand shop after he and Mr. Belasco had a quarrel about more money and Mr. Belasco did not want to pay more money. Three different teams of psychics, scientists, and fools spent time in the house in 1931,1940, and 1970. The first one in 1931, all four people died. In the 1940 investigation, four people again died in violent ways, but one, a preternaturally psychic at 13 years old, survived and was found lying on the front porch, naked in the fetal position. He was in a coma for three month, but then came out of it. Amazingly, he joined the final team in 1970. Benjamin Fisher survived again along with the wife of the inventor of the Reverser machine, Lionel Barret. Apparently the final team succeeded in ridding the negative energy generated by the spirit of Emeric Belasco.” “Suffice it to say that Emeric Belasco was a sadistic and hedonistic person, concerned only with his pleasures and pains, nothing else mattered. His reign over the house started in 1909 and ended in 1920 with his vanishing, nowhere to be seen.” “The house is in ruins, now. But still surrounded by the bog marshes, I think the house still sleeps.” “I did acquire some things from the house, after the survivors of the final team left and when I hold them, I feel something.” “Here is one of the books.” 35 (The Worship of Priapus can be found in used bookstores, as well as others shown in the movie, ‘Legend of Hell House’ -1. Pass it around and then place it on a shelf nearby) “Obviously, the library in the house tended towards the sexual and extreme.” “Here is Emeric Belasco’s son’s ring. The son was chained to a wall and died.” “Here is a cross from the altar at the chapel inside the house” (Place on table.) “These are the plans for the Reverser.” (Unwrap the plans.) “This machine supposedly eliminates the energy contained in an enclosed space. The energy is what we would call a spirit or ghost.” “Even though I have these things, I have never held a proper séance with them. I am a little apprehensive about doing so.” “My theory is that the supposed energy that dies when the Reverser is enabled, doesn’t do so. Remember, energy is neither created nor destroyed; therefore the energy is contained within another form, but still retains the memory of the ghost. That makes holding a séance dangerous.” “If you still agree, I will start.” “Please sit at the table.” (Refold the Reverser plans) (Light candle in middle of table and set somber mood before continuing.) (Place napkin found in your chair over glass next to you.) “The ring will be the first item to concentrate on”. (Pass the ring around and then cup the ring in both hands) “I hold the ring. I feel something emanating from it. I feel it…I feel it….OH!” (Open hands and show hands are now empty -2) “I felt a surge..of something… then nothing….” “I don’t know what happened to the ring.” “LOOK, there’s something in the glass!” (Take napkin off glass , showing smoke. -3 Grab a piece of ‘ectoplasm’ from within smoke -4) “Hmmm… Looks like ectoplasm…” “Ectoplasm is said to be produced from the living body according to the scientist, Dr. Barret, from the last visit. Again, I think differently. I believe that it does come from something other than live tissue.” “We can try to see if there is something trying to communicate with us. So far, it looks as if it is safe to continue” (Move glass off table and away. Sit back down) “All right… everyone, just breathe…. breathe… relax….” (After a little while of breathing and silence, whispering above and around them start to be heard.5) 36 “Do you hear that?... Can you make out what is being said?...Shhhh….Shhhh” (Now, moaning as if in pleasure is heard) (All of a sudden, the book flies off the shelf and on the floor with a bang!-6 Moaning stops.) “Oh…goodness!...Perhaps we’d best stop now. I think with this particular book thrown and the..the moaning like sexual pleasure we just heard, I’m not sure we should venture down this path.” “You know.. maybe this Reverser machine might work on some level to make this a little safer, let me take another look at the plans.” (Unwrap the plans. The ring is in the middle of the plans along with a scrawled message: I’M BACK!! THE RING IS MINE!!” -7) (A loud scream is heard and the candle goes out.-8) “Leave us! Leave this place! Leave us!” “Someone get the lights!” (Lights come on. Everyone sees on the table, an object: a broken cross -9) “Oh my God… Belasco’s still laughing….” END Footnotes: 1. But according to a memorandum I found inside, it had already been put to that use. From some of the facts in the memorandum, I’ve been able to piece together the story that it only hinted at. It took me ten years to find the plans for this machine. If you have some time tonight, I’ll tell you some of the details of a story the whole of which would make Jeffery Daumer a bit queasy. There was a “group”, these people were into Demonology, Devil worship, animal and human sacrifice, the blackest of Black magic. As an aid to achieve their goals, the used Heroin, Morphine, Absinth, Alcohol, Opium, Cocaine, and are rumored to have even used tobacco. 38 Self inflicted injury and pain were commonplace and most of the sacrifices were volunteers from their own ranks. Unfortunately, not all. Their aim was power, world dominance. And whatever shortcomings they had, you couldn’t find people more committed to their cause. From the small memorandum, I have been able to track down a few pieces that belonged to this group. I don’t name them because I have never found anything that used their name. It was one of the most closely held tenants that the name never be mentioned except in full ritual, and cursed be he that names the name. We will not be holding a séance to contact any of these people. I can’t think why anyone would even attempt such a foolish thing. We will be attempting to release and destroy the power that is held in some of these objects, and in doing so, to send some captive good souls to a better place. As I said earlier, not every sacrifice was voluntary. Open Book. A glow comes from within. Reach in and pull out a flashlight. “Hey, I’ve been looking for that.” Turn it off and put it aside. [The flashlight is activated both by its regular switch and by reed switch; this sequence is used to locate one of the magnets held under the table. To be used to do the cross effect coming up.] Some plans are shown, a circuit diagram In my research, I came across these plans, they were made in the sixties and some of the parts were impossible to find, so I had to find an electronic engineer to update the parts, it’s less prone to trouble and a burnt out tube is impossible, which was the problem with the first version. A pretty serious problem. Several people went to the house where the last meeting of “The group” was held. They attempted to hold a séance to contact some of the group to find out what had happened and in the course of one evening all but one of the group was killed in some strange fashion. If you’ve seen the movie “Legend of Hell House” you have a pretty good Hollywood account of what happened. This is the part I find most confusing. The people they were trying to contact were extremely dangerous, insane by any standards of the world except their own. The last meeting of these people ended with a twenty person massacre and one missing person. And they wanted to have a little sit down with these folks. And something went wrong, Shock me, shock me. We are NOT going to try to contact these people. Either group. One group was evil beyond imaging, and the other stupid beyond belief. We are here to break an evil spell, contained within this ring and try to release all the good energy captured inside, that has been used to power the evil. 39 The machine will dissolve the evil and when it’s gone, we will feel the goodness wash over us, the thanks of good people allowed to go on to a better place. And you were going to sit around and watch “American Idol”. [A spoon is removed, as well as a ring, and a broken cross] This cross belonged to one of the séance attendee’s. The surviving member attested that it broke soon before she died. I don’t know how a crisis of faith could kill someone, but she had no apparent cause of death. They say that all forms of death can be ultimately called heart failure, which is what the doctor eventually put on her death certificate. But he has been interviewed, and he said he didn’t have a clue what caused her death. It’s probably a good idea not to touch it. [You put the cross on the table in front of you, separated] This is a spoon found at the location; it was not at the dinner table. Probably shouldn’t touch this either. This is a ring that probably belonged to the person who turned up missing from the group; it is the focus of what were going to try tonight. Absolutely do not touch this. [Pick up the ring with the spoon] Now here’s a few things you can look at. Some old photos of the group. A menu from the last supper, you know what I mean. A vial of ectoplasm from the séance. If you are especially receptive as a psychic, you might want to pass on this one too. A bead from the séance group, the CSI team got most of them, but missed this one. Part of a bracelet, lets not talk about how the bracelet was broken. A memento from the estate of Rolf Randolph Deutsch, I’m not sure exactly what it is… All of the items that you’re passing around have already passed through the machine, so there’s no chance of picking up bad vibes, but they have been known to increase psychic ability at least 40 temporarily. Let me show you what I mean. [Have the pictures gathered, face down.] [One is selected while the spectator thinks of a character specified by you] [The picture is folded into the drawings of the machine and set aside] [The remaining pictures are picked up haphazardly (Avoiding shuffling- no one shuffles pictures)] [Perform “Impromptu Out of This World with the pictures (Division depends on the cards)] [Cards are revealed to be divided] [Drawing is opened to show they selected the correct picture] This increase in psychic ability is what will protect us all in tonight’s experiment. We will all join hands in a moment. NOT a séance, but a circle of protection that will balance the total of our combined psychic energy to protect all of us equally. But first I’ll put the ring on the machine and turn it on to get started. Do you know why you do it like that and not turn the machine on and put the ring down? The ring resists, watch this. [Turn on the machine] [You pick up the ring with the handle of the spoon, letting it slide down to the bowl.] (Where you hold the spoon) [As you bring the ring close to the machine, the ring rises up the spoon and falls off.] [Turn off the machine] [Put the ring on the machine] [Turn on the machine] [Activate shock circuit timer] [Everyone joins hands] As the bad energy is dissipated by the machine, the good will slowly flow outwards, be ready. [The spoon spins 90 degrees from a position cross ways to the machine to the handle pointing at you] [The cross, (between you and the spoon) two pieces separated by an inch or so, slide together, reforming into an unbroken whole] And the good flows through us and past us, and maintain the circle until we know it’s safe. [A sudden shock makes everyone break contact.] Wow, that was very close, someone broke contact just a moment as some bad influence had left, kept at bay by our ring of protection. Someone here is a member of the cabal. Well, you’re a bit late the ring is empty. Good night everyone. Be careful driving home. And be careful who you ride with. 41 ARCANUM: Impromptu Out Of This World You can’t use living and dead, because pretty much everyone died. So you may want to use “Group” and “Victim”. The change in rows from “red” to “black” can be justified by using a second spectator. It works as a theme because you are showing that everyone has just increased their psychic power by handling the objects. The Cross Both halves of the cross have a magnet imbedded in them. When brought close together, they jump together. The wire gimmick described here holds them slightly apart, and when you press on one end of the gimmick, the magnets under the table are pushed away from the table top, allowing the cross pieces to jump together. The exact locations of the magnets under the table are located by using the flashlight gag. Open the book to remove the flashlight, see where the flashlight is located in the book, and as you remove the flashlight, push the book back so the edge of the book marks the location of the magnets. The Shock The circuit diagram supplied is a circuit from the 70’s. It is a surprising shock, but not too bad. Before I installed an on/off switch, I used to put the batteries in and walk around carrying it with it on, just in case someone asked me what it was. You get used to the tingle. There are many shock gags available, shocking lighter, pen, gum, calculator, etc, you might adapt one of these to this use. Attach one lead to your right arm and one to your left, as close to your hands as possible. When everyone joins hands and the device is activated, everyone will receive a portion of the shock. You will get the whole shock, but you must suffer for your art. For the timer, you’re on your own, sorry. You might check out “Electronics for Magicians” by Jon Thompson, available from Lulu.com. You could use an elbow switch or a toe switch to activate the shock circuit. 42 FILE 7734 Chris Handa Transcribed from: IASM File #7734 Request of: Christopher J. However, the Mr. Swift requested documentation of the steps that the IASM utilizes in order to conduct an official séance, agreeing to both take these procedures under advisement and incorporate aspects of them within the structure where permitted. Frederick Jones (IASM #1969) agreed to provide this information as well as attend as an observer. No other IASM members were available to travel and attend. However, Jones collaborated with independent researchers Norville Rogers, Michael Rhodes PhD., and Anthony Blake to compile a more complete report. Also in attendance but unwilling to share personal data at the time were representatives from The Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Secret Society for Unusual Acquisition (SSOA). Background/History/Research: The Belasco house is to this day the subject of folklore and urban legend. Reportedly, the estate was originally owned by Emeric Belasco, an eccentric pseudoscientist and known sexual deviant. Belasco is reported to have conducted many atrocities against individuals described in some accounts as “guests” and others as [experimental] “subjects” of psychological and physical manipulation to reduce the personalities of the most steadfast, civilized, and intelligent to the most base and animalistic of behaviors. As with many examples of local folklore, there are no documented reports from hospitals, the police department, or other municipal authorities to validate such claims. At most, editorial pieces have been found in local newspapers and society pages that indicate a clear disapproval of Mr. Belasco and his lifestyle choices. No date of death is listed for Mr. Belasco, but it is reported that he is to have disappeared in 1929. Consequently, séances and similar ritualistic events have occurred sporadically from 1931 through December 1970. Few of these events have been documented, and most information comes from secondhand resources. The séance of December 23, 1970 is reported to have been devastating, resulting in two (2) confirmed deaths. From this séance, the only validated documentation that remains is the police report of December 26, 1970 which indicates that the bodies of two individuals were removed from the former Belasco estate by Mr. Benjamin Fischer and taken to the morgue in the nearby town of Caribou Falls, Maine. Autopsy results indicate that Lionel Barrett of cardiac arrest and asphyxiation while in a body of water treated with bromine, presumably a swimming pool. Florence Tanner died of severe blood loss from self-induced lacerations to both wrists and significant external trauma, particularly to the genital area. No charges were filed as the deaths were ruled of natural causes and suicide, respectively. No evidence of physical contact was found on Ms. Tanner’s body and the conclusion was that all injuries, including those to the genital area, were self-inflicted and not a result of rape or a similar violent attack. It was noted, however, that Mr. Fischer claims to have been a part of a séance conducted at the Belasco residence in 1940. No record of such an event exists in current IASM files. Reportedly, the benefactor possessed documentation and artifacts from both the Belasco Estate and the 1970 séance and was interested in conducting a “more civil, organized séance with lots of witnesses to ensure the safety of all participants” on December 23, 1983. What follows is the collected documentation of the event and official position of the IASM regarding the entire series of events. 44 Identified procedures: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Warmup Exercises (Non-IASM Procedure/Debunked) Testing of Readiness (Debunked) Testing of Sitters Verification of Spirit Presence (Debunked) Spirit Contact Physical Evidence (Debunked) Gathering of Information Verification of Information (Not Performed) Procedures not recognized as valid: 5/8 1. Warmup Exercise: Sorting of photographs reportedly from original Belasco’s personal files. As Host, Mr. Swift prepared guests and began to identify potential sitters by introducing a hollowed-out book that he stated contained artifacts from the Belasco House reported to have a connection to the 1970 séance. As a stated “warmup” prior to the arrival of the medium, Mr. Swift selected a potential sitter and asked her to sort a stack of photographs into two specific groups: guest list prospects and those who died at the Belasco Estate. Belasco is said to have marked the back of the photos of his subjects with a red “X” while the others contained no notation on the back of the photos. These are thought to have been kept as reference points for future invitations/experiments. Observer/participant successfully sorted four (4) guests into one pile and seven (7) deceased test subjects into a second pile. Problem Identified: Mr. Swift is reported to have handled the photographs. Upon reconstruction of the events, Mr. Blake reported to Mr. Jones that Mr. Swift both altered the order of the photographs and displayed the backs of the photographs using a known magician’s technique. Identified as <Requesting IASM Member not authorized to view information at this clearance level. Member may appeal and/or request a higher clearance level to view the remainder of the file information.—EB 02/27/2011> The above exercise is not to be counted, both for reasons of not being a part of typical IASM proceedings and because of the chicanery involved in the presentation of information. 45 2. Testing of Readiness: Relighting of Candle Mr. Swift stated that he was instructed by the room to “cleanse the room” by the lighting of a pure white candle as well as to “test the readiness by the candle relighting exercise.” Mr. Swift lit the candle with a Zippo lighter, allowing the candle to burn while reading words of preparation for the evening. At the conclusion, Mr. Swift asked a second sitter to stand next to him and hold the lighter. He explained that if the candle were extinguished and remained to be so, then the area was not ready for a séance. If the candle were to relight itself without physical contact with the wick, then the room and participants are both ready. Host asked the sitter to hand him the lighter and then blow out the candle. As the participant did so, the Mr. Swift re-ignited the lighter and waved its flame over the extinguished candle. By multiple reports, a spark appeared to jump from the lighter over to the wick, which sparked and rekindled into a full flame for the remainder of the séance. Problem Identified: Mr. Jones consulted with Mr. Martin Gardner at Bell Laboratories, who was able to duplicate the same phenomenon in multiple settings with various candles, lighters, and matches. Mr. Gardner explained that not all of the paraffin and wick material burns off, and instead travels as near-microscopic particles attached to the carbon particles contained within the smoke. As long as the smoke stream remains consistent, a flame applied to any part of the smoke will ignite these unburned fuel particles and cause the flame to travel along the path of the smoke until it reaches the wick. Mr. Gardner notes that he published this phenomenon in his Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic (1978). 3. Testing of Sitters: Pendulum Method Sitters were taken from the pool of observers first as volunteers by show of hands, secondly picked by Mr. Swift in the role of Host, and thirdly through the successful performance of the task as described below. Once five sitters were identified (four to sit at the main table with the fifth to sit separately from the proceedings as an alternative sitter should any of the first four bow out before the end of the proceedings), testing ceased. Mr. Swift placed two items on the table, a silver signet ring (initials “DB” on it) and a pewter snuff tin. Guests were invited to hold a silver spoon suspended from a chain (an absinthe spoon or similar device for illicit drug use taken from the book) above each object with the instructions that one of the two items came from the Belasco estate. In their mind’s eye, they were told to imagine which object belonged to the Belasco estate and that it was sitting on a table in a study in front of an old Grandfather clock. 46 Furthermore, they were told to imagine that the spoon as moving in time with the heavy pendulum below the clock’s face. Results: Guests 1, 2, 4, and 7 experienced movement of the pendulum above the ring. Guests 3 and 6 experienced movement above the snuff tin and guest 5 experienced no movement above either object. No bias or issues were found with any of the items utilized and all subjects were later proven to be impartial sitters. 4. Verification of Spirit Presence: Spirit Writing Before the invitation of the medium into the parlor, two photographs were taken from an envelope and shown to have no writing on the reverse side of either photograph. The Host clipped these photos together with a small “bulldog” style paper fastener on all four sides. Leaving the fastener extensions in the functional position, he hung the photographs from a small stand with a display hook (very similar to the manner in which one would display a Holiday ornament off of the Christmas tree or a cherished pocket watch). The host provided background information regarding the two females. One is reported to be of Florence Tanner, deceased medium of the 1970 séance. The other photograph is reported to be of the wife of Lionel Barrett, the physicist present for the proceedings. (Her name is either Edith or Ann Barrett as there are records of both, and Edith Ann Barrett may very well be her given Christian name.) Mrs. Barrett was reported to not have participated in the proceedings, but is reported to have been attacked and even possibly possessed by an entity that evening. Florence is reported to have been violently attacked from the first attempt at contact through the end of her experience. Both are reported to have displayed unexplained and atypical personality shifts including sexual promiscuity directed at non-mates and even each other over the course of the fateful experiment. At the conclusion of the séance, it is reported that the words “I am here” were scrawled across the back of Mrs. Barrett’s photograph along with the copulation and chaining of male and female biological symbols in a manner that suggests deviant sexual behavior. Problem Identified: Mr. Swift handled photographs prior to their being clipped together and hung from the stand. There are two accounts from collaborators with Mr. Jones. Mr. Rogers’ point of view (to the far left of the proceedings) notes that the photographs were taken out of an envelope stacked with Mrs. Barrett on top. Both photographs were rotated as one, separated, and the bottom photograph rotated a second time, thus showing only the back of Florence’s photograph each time. Dr. Rhodes (the observer to the far right) indicates that the photographs were held in each hand with faces toward his side. The left photograph of Florence was shown, and as the Host turned his body, both hands came together with the left photograph passing over the right photograph and into the Host’s right hand. At the same time, this photograph was reversed to show the same back but to the other side of his group. The host then placed the photographs together to show faces on the outside of the packet that he formed. Given the description, it is quite possible that Mr. Swift used both methods to display the photographs without showing hidden writing on the reverse side of Mrs. Barrett’s photograph. 5. Spirit Contact: Channeled Communication via Medium Upon introduction of Mr. Kase as the Medium for the evening, four (4) of the 5 sitters chosen through the pendulum test were directed to take seats at the table with sitter 5 47 taking her place in the chair isolated away from the group. Sitter 5 was asked to sit with a board and a bell resembling a service bell from a hotel lobby desk. Should she be needed to fill the space of one of the other sitters, the bell would rest upon the chair and board unattended. From the remaining observers, three volunteers were given stenographer’s notepads, pencils, and instructions to “write down anything that they personally thought was important.” Mr. Kase performed his own relaxation techniques (dimming of lights, focus upon the candle flame, counting backward) prior to the experience described as channeling. At the count of “four” the bell rang once, the medium continued counting, and the bell rang at “two.” At this point, the medium began to ask questions, verbalizing the spirit responses through conversation with himself as well as further questions asked to the entity, which neither manifested nor made a noise on its own. At one point, the bell rang quickly four times, and the medium called for the lights before slipping back into his chair. 6. Physical Evidence: Apport Prior to the introduction of the medium, Mr. Swift drew attention to a wooden tube sitting end-open toward the observers. He explained that the Medium asked for permission to use this device, and once visually verified to be empty, he would place it open end up next to the stand with the photographs. The Host then explained the concept of apports, or gifts from the spirit world. Mr. Kase was reported to be skilled in the acquisition of apports, and this device prevented any chicanery, such as the rolling of paper into a cone and simply loading a small object from the bottom of the cone or in the process or rolling the paper into a cone shape. Following the reading of information from the Gathering of Information phase (see below), Mr. Kase asked Sitter number 5 to pick up the tube by the base, carefully carrying it open end up over to the Medium. Arms outstretched, the Medium took the tube from the hands of Sitter #5, held it over his head, and asked her to cup her hands in order to catch any apport that may have been left behind. A small black bead sculpted into the shape of a black cat came out of the tube to rest into the hands of Sitter #5. The Host verified information that one of the sitters in the 1940 reports to have been attacked by a black cat during the course of the proceedings. It is also reported that Belasco’s first heinous act was the killing of a black cat to see if it really had nine lives, and that Dr. Barrett introduced a cat into the proceedings in 1970, but the cat did not survive the ordeal. 48 Problem Identified: Mr. Jones observed the above event and was able to procure the “apport tube” utilized by the Host and Medium. Upon inspection, Mr. Jones noticed that the tube contained a hidden flap with a mirrored surface. When held with one specific side of the tube facing up, the flap would cover the true bottom of the tube at a 45 degree angle, reflecting the internal pattern of the tube and creating the illusion of an empty vessel. Handled carefully, the object made no noise within the tube until picked up by the medium from the bottom end and inverted into the hands of the sitter. At this point the tube could be shown empty and placed out of sight. Mr. Jones created a slight diversion that is not an IASM-approved technique in order to procure the tube. However, he did not publicly reveal his discovery and instead sent it to the New York Office for inspection and verification. This could be the reason for the lack of information for item #7 (see below) as well as an anonymous letter to the IASM threatening to sue if any of the “meddlers” are found to disrupt séances in the New England area are discovered to be card-carrying IASM members, or either directly or indirectly associated with the organization. 7. Gathering of Information Information gathered on this date is lost. No recordings were made of the proceedings (event date predates IASM-mandated recording of sessions via electronic media as a condition of attendance of any IASM personnel). The stenographer notebooks were collected, placed in an envelope, sealed, and numbered for the first step in the Chain of Custody as agreed upon by the Host and adopted as a direct result of review of official IASM procedures. However, upon request for submission of materials to the New York Office of the IASM, these items were not delivered. No reply regarding the information has ever been received, so the firsthand data has never been verified. Reports that 80% of the items listed by the recorders as verifiable according to reported history have been passed on to the New York IASM Headquarters, but all of this was considered to be second-hand without the notebooks. Information said to have been delivered second-hand is unverifiable and thus not counted as a part of the record of the evening. 8. Verification of Information Due to the unfortunate events as indicated in item number seven (7) of this report, no information has been able to be verified. As a result, the proceedings of this evening were listed as “unverified” until peer review identified the “debunked” sections of this report as sufficient enough information to categorize this specific event as a nonparanormal event. Items three (3) and five (5) are not listed as debunked, but cannot be confirmed in light of the evidence reported in other categories. The information contained within this report does not in any way impact the validation of future séances in relation to this particular subject. Handa (IASM #7013) Date: 03/25/2011 In research related to the debunking of item number 1, Mr. Handa speculates that a similar method has been used and discussed by Canadian entertainer Tony Chris for his effect “Hampton Falls,” an effect marketed to magicians. Upon communication with Mr. Chris in February of 2011, Mr. Handa feels very confident that the methods used by the unidentified Host are identical to methods later employed and refined by Mr. Chris for his professional performing repertoire. Mr. Chris may be reached at http://tonychrismagic.com/ for further insight into this matter. In research related to the debunking of item number 4, Mr. Handa notes that similar “slate moves” have been utilized by mediums over the years and published in Scott Moore Davis’ periodical SÉANCE (currently available in a reprinted format through Magic publisher/historian Richard Kaufman). Mr. Handa has also worked to train other performers and demonstrators with his own variation of the handling of slates, photographs, cards, and similar objects with similar, nearlyidentical moves that vary only by presentation condition and not in spirit. In research related to the debunking of item number 6, Mr. Handa discovered a child’s toy that operates in the same way as the “apport tube” utilized by the medium. It may be found at the following website: http://www.melissaanddoug.com/incredible-illusion-toy-magic-set . The children’s magic set known as the “Incredible Illusion Magic Set” and formerly known as the “Enchanted Ring Magic set” contains a prop known in the set as the “Dragon’s Den.” It is a long, rectangular tube with a mirror flap at one end that can be loaded with a small object, shown to be empty, and then immediately inverted to dump a small object into the hand of an uninvolved party. Mr. Handa has procured one of these items, re-detailed it, and distressed it to resemble the “apport tube” described in section number 6 of this report. Mr. Handa notes that his association with the IASM comes through the graces of Rick Maue. A more detailed account of the procedures for an official IASM Séance may be found in his Book of Spirits Séance a.k.a. The B.O.S.S. to most. More information about both Mr. Maue and The B.O.S.S. may be found at http://www.deceptionsunlimited.com or through direct contact with the author. 50 51 SPECIAL MENTIONS Although not official entries for the challenge, at least two masters of the macabre were inspired by the event to get into the “spirit” of things and let the darkness of Hell House inspire some creative activities to help this project! IN SEARCH OF HELL HOUSE Our friend in mystery, Tony Iacoviello, told him the contest inspired him to get along with a project he had brewing for some time… launching him into preparing for a trip to another Hell House near his own home… ghost hunting… the works… what could go wrong??? Please read of his exploits… which are still continuing through the realms of darkness! http://insearchofhellhouse.blogspot.com/ Excerpts from an entry: Thursday Night – Part 3 The Dreams Dreams for me are many things. Sometimes they are prophetic, informing me of things to come; but usually they are just a combination of thoughts, ideas, and external influences meshed together into interrelated psychotic movie like shorts. This night’s dreams seemed to be of the later category… Eventually I fall back to sleep and find myself in the huge mansion. Liam Neeson is there lecturing as I stand looking dumbfounded at a scantly clad Catherine Zeta Jones. Without warning, bones start shooting out of the huge fireplace, coming at us, then the visage of a huge face appears, screaming. The next thing I know, I’m on my scooter, Catherine on the back with her body pressed against mine. We burst through the door then the gate, leaving a whimpering Liam behind in a puddle of tears as we ride off into the coming sunrise. And I’m awake again. I remember thinking, “Damn, why did I have to wake up then?” Teddy is still asleep on my legs; his brother Little has joined us and is curled up next to me, pressing into my back. Sleep comes again, but I cannot recall any other dreams. Morning comes; I get up and go through the daily routine but with the image of Ms. Jones on my mind, I know I want to do this project! 52 THE SHINING Another colleague in the dark arts of imagination, Bill Montanta, graciously donated his wonderful coin shiners for part of the Grand Prize. Bill is a master of spirit effects, and the Collection is honoured to have this contribution. For more of Bill’s amazing work, please follow the following link: http://glisk.weebly.com/ I called the item “The Shining” in keeping with the Haunted House Ethos of the current challenge. I am sure if you contact him, he may be able to create that and other wonderful artifacts for the serious mystery performer. 53 54 [Playing off an old gramophone… the voice of Emeric Belasco:] Farewell from my home. I'm delighted you came. I'm certain you found your stay here most illuminating. And now… the answers that you seek… As you have learned my ways, you must have guessed that when you think victory is near… that you are SURE in you BELIEFS, is when I make my move. It is NOW. You have won NOTHING! You cannot solve the riddle of Hell House… it can not be solved! Hahahahhaaaaaa! Thank you for running around like mice in my maze of madness. And now, Adieu 55 We hope you liked that last joke of Emeric’s from beyond the grave…And now, the results of the 2011 expedition into HELL HOUSE FIRST SURVIVOR: RON DAYTON (Sans Sanity) Emeric Belasco stated due to the number of entries and zeal, he thinks Ron may be as strong-willed as he was… so Ron, you are the First Survivor of the Hell House Challenge! The Keeper’s favourite was the “An Evening in Hell House”… it was the most overt to hitting the ethos of the book’s themes and also the RPG angle was a nice innovation from the usual…so Bill will also get something special… SECOND SURVIVOR: CHRIS HANDA (Sans Sanity and random limb) A well documented file of darkness… expertly written, crafted, and practical. It should (and maybe it will) be made into an actual physical document! Bravo, sir. THE NEW VICTIMS OF HELL HOUSE (Sans Sanity, random limbs, and heads) Actually, all the entries were fantastic. Thus although not the survivors of this particular challenge, Willem, Patrick and Dave shall receive some interesting treasures from the Collection. 56 57
