Grade 1!
Grade 1! By Hiro Lu.Instructed by Mr. Stracey 1 Red came up with some great philosophical questions after watching ‘Not Now, Bernard’. This theme was extended into a creative writing class where they came up with alternate endings. Hiro wrote and edited this ending all by himself. Great job, Hiro! 1 Red really enjoyed ‘Where The Wild Things Are’, and we did a number of activities related to it. In this one, the students chose their favorite character from the story, and then had to express their feelings as that character. Kelly wrote some great sentences with excellent details. By Jasmine Yang By Lucas Wang Rosa Parks was brave. I think she made a very good choice by not standing up for the white man. She broke the bad rule because she remembered what her grandfather’s advice was. If it was me, I think that I will be scared to not give up my place because I would think of all the trouble I will have. I do think that rule was not fair. Rosa Parks had a big problem. She had to give her seat up to white people on the bus. Martin Luther King wanted to change the rule. He decided that Rosa Parks needed to have a choice if she wanted the white people to take her seat. Rosa Parks broke the rule and went to jail. I think the white people were bad because they were not friends with the black people, and the white people just told the black people to help them do house work. By Davy Hsiang Rosa’s grandfather’s advice to her was: “You are just as good as anyone.” Martin Luther King was trying to change the law. In 1955 Rosa Parks decided not to stand up to give her seat for the white man. If black people didn’t stand up like Rosa Parks they will have problems. They will go to jail. Black people had two choices. They could leave their seats or go to jail. I think that was very unfair. Luckily Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. decided to take action and that’s why they changed the law. Illustrated by Nora Lin Instructed by Mr. van der Westhuizen 3 Yellow 3 Yellow The Magic Dog By Monika Wang Instructed by Mr. van der Westhuizen Once upon a time there were two friends named Snoopy and Sponge Bob. They decided to go to a dog shop to buy a dog. They found a very cute dog named Pumpkin. What they did not know is that Pumpkin was a magic dog. No one knew it. One day Snoopy, Sponge Bob and Pumpkin went to the park to play with a ball. They played for a long time but then they saw something strange. When they threw the ball to Pumpkin the ball traveled very slowly and floated in the air like a balloon. Suddenly they realized that Pumpkin was using magic. They shouted: “Ohh! Pumpkin, you are a magic dog”. Pumpkin smiled and nodded his head. Pumpkin then said that he can give them each three whishes. Sponge Bob wished for the three of them to be friends forever. Snoopy whished the same, so little Pumpkin gave them what they wished for. They decided that they will use their other two wishes later. From that day on they played ball games every day and the three of them were friends for a very, very long time. Einstein was very diligent in studying mathematics. He disliked going to school, but he liked studying by himself. Einstein was the top student in math, but he performed very poorly in other subjects that need memorization. He liked science very much in secondary school, and he had always wanted to learn more about it. Einstein inspired me because he studied on his own without any support from his family. He developed the General Theory of Relativity and the mass-energy equivalence formula: E=MC2. Einstein received the 1921 Nobel Prize in physics and became the most famous scientist ever. Science is my favorite subject, and I have science classes after school. I like science, and I will study hard to become a great scientist like Albert Einstein. By Daniel Chen Instructed by Mr. David Chen Bill Gates is my inspiration. He is the chairman of Microsoft. He is also a famous American entrepreneur, software engineer, and philanthropist. Bill Gates is a great inventor, his Microsoft Windows changed the computer world. I want to be like him because Gates invented something that people need to use every day. When he was a child, he told himself “I should do something and start my own business.” If he hadn’t said those words, Microsoft probably would have never existed. From now on, I will start taking computer lessons. Maybe one day I will create computers made out of my favorite toy – Lego, and I will be famous around the world just like Bill Gates. My Inspiration By Farrah Tung Instructed by Mr. David Chen Thomas Alva Edison is my inspiration. He invented light bulbs, so now we can see things clearly at night. Otherwise, we would still be using candles, which may cause fire easily. I guess people think Edison was talented, but they are wrong. The young Edison wasn’t talented, and his curiosity and constant questioning bothered his teachers. Although he studied only three months in school, he learned everything through self studying. He had many failed experiments, but he did not give up. He finally invented electric light successful. This history has taught me a lesson, that is, you do one thing at a time and never give up. Edison didn’t learn very well in school, but he successfully invented the electric light. So I want to have that spirit. I want to contribute to the world. By Jane Lin Instructed by Mr. David Chen My inspiration is A-Shin, he is the lead vocal of May Day. May Day is the most popular rock band in Taiwan with hundreds of thousands of fans. I like A-Shin because I like singing. I often sing May Day’s songs, and I like cheerful songs better than the slower ones. Most of May Day’s songs are written by A-Shin, and he has written many beautiful and heartwarming songs. This is also the reason why I like him. I am learning to play May Day’s songs on my ukulele, and I hope when I grow up, I can be like A-Shin. I want to release my own CD and write songs to inspire others. I hope one day I can play my music in front of my fans! By Annabel T. H. Lin Instructed by Mr. David Chen My Inspiration Yo-Yo Ma inspired me! He is a cellist. He plays cello wonderfully. He has inspired lots of people, like Taiwan’s cello prodigy Nana Oyoung, who performs frequently on TV. Yo-Yo Ma inspired me through his music. I usually listen to his music on YouTube. He started playing cello at a very young age, and he has been working very hard since he started playing cello. Now, I can play cello, but I still can’t play as well as he because playing cello requires lots of finesse. I once saw a student playing cello on stage. I could not believe my ears because she played so well and she is only one year older than I am. So I have to work harder. Yo-Yo Ma has given me lots of courage and encouragement. I hope one day I can play as gracefully as Yo-Yo Ma. By Jimmy Chao Instructed by Mr. David Chen My Inspiration is someone who is very tall but not fat. He has a loud voice, and he works very hard. He is good at repairing computers and my toys, and he is also good at designing cases for mobile phones. He is my dad! This year, I would like many things for Christmas. First of all, I would like a new comic book and an iPhone. Finally, I also want an iPad. I have been a good boy this year, so I think I deserve these presents. Three good things I have done are: I did my homework daily. I was really quiet in class, and I made my family very happy. When you come down the chimney, please look in the kitchen. I am going to leave a hamburger and French fries on the table for you to have. Thank you Santa, I am very excited Signed: Howard 4 Yellow Christmas Elves on Strike! by Winnie Lu Instructed by Mrs. Salome Kukkuk We’re on strike. That’s it! We’re tired of working day after day with no breaks and no holidays. We are fed up of working for zero wages. We are sick of the cramped, confined sleeping and working quarters at the workshop. And most of all we refuse to wear these silly, uncomfortable elf suits anymore. We, the union of Workshop Elves refuse to make anymore toys until the following demands are met: Silly Suits Make new elf suits for the Christmas Elves. So that the Christmas Elves would not complain that the old suits are uncomfortable, ugly and silly. Zero Wages Pay the elves with banana cookies and special gifts to thank them for making so many toys. No Holiday Let the Elves go on holiday when it’s their birthday. That way they can relax and work harder when they come back. No Breaks Let the Christmas Elves take a break every three hours. They also need a comfortable place to sleep as they are tired. Work Daily Let them work for three days and stay home for one day. That way the Christmas Elves don’t need to work daily. Bad Working Quarters Decorate the workshop with balloons, a Christmas tree, and bells. This way the Elves will feel happy. Cramped Sleeping Quarters Ask a carpenter to enlarge the Elves’ sleeping quarters. And buy really good beds for all of them to sleep on. Trip to the Zoo by Julie Huang, 4 Blue Instructed by Ms. Betty Deng The whole class went to Taipei Zoo last Thursday. First we went to the Insects Museum. I saw many fossils. Some fossils had ants and bees inside. I like them because they look like diamonds. Then we went to look at animals. I saw muntjacs, otters, hippopotamuses, lemurs, white rhinos and East African baboons. I like otters the most. I think they are very smart. They help each other when the predators come to catch their children. Animals are smart and wonderful. They look cute and beautiful. Most importantly, they know how to protect themselves and their families. Inspiration is an important thing in my life. I learned many things from animals. They are smarter than us. Animals are our friends. We should love them and protect them. A Visit to Candy World By Cindy Deng & Patty Chen When I was doing my homework one day, someone named Kitty came to me with a lot of candy. “Do you want to come with me?” she asked. “I can take you to Candy World.” “Sure,” I agreed. When we got into Candy World, I became very small, just like the size of candy. Kitty took me to a castle. Kitty told the King of Candy World, “The person you wanted to see is here.” The King took me to a candy room. “You are the BEST child who has ever lived on earth, so you can live here forever,” he said. “OK,” I said. The next day, I walked around Candy World by myself. I ate a lot of candy. The following day, I did the same thing. I did the same thing for couple more days. I got bored eventually. I wanted to go home. “Can I go home?” I begged the king. “No,” he said. “You can’t go back home, you need to stay here forever.” I cried and cried. “Ding” “Ding” The alarm clock woke me up. “Phew! You know that it is trueWatermelon, I love to eat you! Typhoon by Jerry Lin, Grade 5 Red Instructed by Mr. Mornay Coetzee Oh typhoon, Why do you blow away children’s balloons? And you always come in the afternoons! You are not cool, And you are such a fool! Everybody hates you I wish you’d only blow during school! The Golden Seed By Victor Li, Grade 5Red Instructed by Mr. Mornay Coetzee Henry lived in the middle of the forest. His house was as small as a bathroom and there were even holes in it. He was dirty and thin, much shorter than a 10 year-old boy even though he was 12 years old. He was so weak he couldn’t even lift up a stone. His clothes were made out of newspapers and rags. Flies flew and buzzed around him. In spite of all this, he was very kind. He liked to help people, although as this story starts, he needed somebody to help him. His nose was frozen like ice, his feet were shivering. He had to get some food and wood. He wore his newspaper coat and went to the city. A few minutes later, the wind began to blow wildly, like a monster, the snow pounced on Henry like a tiger. Henry couldn’t stand it; he got very dizzy and collapsed. When he woke up, he was in an igloo. There were even tiny people in the igloo. They were wearing green shirts and they had pointy ears and long noses. The strangest part was that they all looked the same. Henry was shocked, he couldn’t say a word. One of the short people said, “We are Santa’s elves. Welcome to the North Pole.” “The North Pole?” Henry shouted. “Yes, the North Pole! We have been waiting for you. We’ll take you to see Santa.” “But…”The elves didn’t listen to Henry. They pulled him through the mysterious forest. In the middle of the forest, there was a golden tree. The golden tree was brighter than a star. It was the most beautiful thing Henry had ever seen. The elf said, “Do you see the pinecones on the tree? Pick them and magical things will happen. ”Henry was just about to touch a pinecone when suddenly an enormous old guy jumped out. It was Black Peter! He had a big, long beard and curly mustache. His clothes were all black. He shouted, “No human can come here! I shall beat the boy! I shall heat the boy! I shall eat the boy!” Black Peter picked Henry up. Henry was frightened. He didn’t know what to do……BANG! Something fell on Henry’s head, it was a note written on an ornament. Henry read the note, he knew what to do. He shouted, “I don’t believe in Black Peter!” While he was saying this, Black Peter hissed, fell down and vanished. The elf said, “You beat Black Peter! If any good person doesn’t believe in Black Peter, he will vanish forever.” Henry was really happy. He quickly ran to the tree and picked a pinecone. Then the tree turned into a beautiful house. The house had bells and candy canes on it. There were even reindeer beside the house! Henry walked into the house. There was a man sitting by the chimney drinking hot chocolate. He had a big red nose, a fat tummy, and he was wearing red clothes. It was Santa. Santa saw Henry and said, “Ho! Ho! Hi! Hello Henry, nice to meet you. Thank you for cleaning up that mess! Here is your present.” Henry opened the gift, it was a golden seed. “Plant this in your house on Christmas Eve and a gift you shall receive.” Henry said goodbye to the elves and went home. He planted the seed. The seed suddenly began to grow into a tree. Then BOOM! The tree turned into sparkles and Henry’s house changed into a wonderful mansion filled with food. Henry had the best Christmas ever. An Exciting Christmas By Violet Lu, Grade 5 Red Instructed by Mr. Mornay Coetzee Prologue As the 24th of December neared, Santa’s workshop became busier and busier. The workshop was of brown, rough wood lined with ancient symbols and words. It sat on a tall ridge, which was covered with clean, white snow. However, everything looked almost brand new due to the whole place being protected by strong, mysterious magic, which only Santa controls…… Chapter One On Christmas Eve, I couldn’t sleep. I tossed and turned under the covers, imagining the big pile of glistening presents wrapped in bright, shiny, colorful paper that I would receive tomorrow. But eventually the purring of my large, black cat, Shadow, lulled me into a deep sleep. Chapter two “Creeeaaakkk” The sound of my bedroom door opening made me start. I awoke instantly, as if shocked by an electrical current. There in the doorway, stood a strange person. He was wearing bright red clothing with soft, white, furry fluff around the edges. “Wow! This person must really adore red!” I thought. But then, I noticed the mischievous, black eyes, the silver hair and long beard. Yet, the gaunt, sallow face somehow didn’t fit in with the image, but it really was HIM! That enormous, fat and jolly champion of Christmas - Santa Claus! Chapter three “Ho! Ho! Ho!” Santa said, somehow tiredly. “I’m Santa. My sleigh, reindeer and presents have been stolen by them, the evil, nightmarish ones: Black Peter and Jack Frost. Will you help me retrieve my possessions?” “Yes, of course I would!” I said. “Then let’s go!” Santa cried out. Chapter four Santa used magic to zip us to his workshop. The tiny, white elves each had a pair of large, pointy ears, small, beady eyes, and a rather pointy nose. They greeted us with platters of mouth-watering desserts. When Santa and I each had our fill, we changed into full body armor carved out of silver with snow crystals in it. I saw Santa take a dusty, brown, plain carpet, which turned out to be a flying carpet. We rode on it, holding on to our weapons tightly. Santa had his magic wand, a thin, long, stripe of wood, and mine was a long spear, which would sparkle with fire when thrown and could be used anywhere, but only three times. Soon, a black, icy castle loomed into view. We had reached our destination, at last - Black Ice Castle. Chapter five “I’ll guard the castle, while you get the things. I don’t think I can climb that high. I can’t use magic here, but I can locate where the things are,” Santa said. “Can you see the highest window on the tower?” Santa asked . “The sleigh, reindeer and presents are there.” “So, let me get this clear,” I said. “I sneak into the castle, grab the things without getting noticed , and get the hell out of this scary place?” “That’s right,” Santa said. “Are you ready?” Chapter six I was shivering and trembling like jelly, by the time I was halfway up the castle. Suddenly, something dragged me upward so fast, that everything was a blur of color. When the world stopped spinning, I opened my eyes slowly. I was in a cold, dark room with Santa’s things. A sleigh made of wood, with elegant patterns around the edges. A bag of presents filled to the brim, and a few seemingly ordinary, brown reindeer with antlers. Then something occurred to me. The reindeer just pulled me up! They had formed a chain—no wonder their chests were heaving so fast! I had never ridden on a sleigh, let alone steering one! I made sure that the reindeer were in a good condition, and then climbed onto the sleigh. Noises were coming up, towards me. It was now or never. I threw the spear at the wall. The magical fire quickly started melting through the black ice walls and a hole appeared just in front of me. The reindeer galloped out and into the cold, night air. Chapter seven Santa had all the things in order. The carpet was rolled up, and he had put on his gloves. So, when I landed, he got on the sleigh immediately, and thankfully traded seats with me. As we rose up, I took one last look at the Black Ice Castle, glowing eerily in the darkness .Then, “KA-BOOM!”I threw the spear again, straight at the castle. Loud yells and angry shouts erupted all around us, destroying the peaceful silence, as the horrible castle exploded. Chapter eight Mission accomplished! Santa thanked me for at least the billionth time and dropped me off at my house. I was so tired, that I fell asleep even before my head hit the pillows. Was it an illusion, or did I really help Santa? epilogue The next morning, I ran to my twinkling Christmas tree. Holy Moly! There were hundreds upon hundreds of presents lying on the floor, inviting me to unwrap them. Hmmm……Maybe I should unwrap the purple one first……This certainly was a really jolly and exciting Christmas! A Special Day to Remember By Nana Chu, Grade 5 Yellow Instructed by Mr.van der Merwe “Bonjour Nana!” I heard a beautiful voice as I gazed back. Oh my goddess! It was my idol — Coco Chanel. Ever since I have known about fashion, I wanted to be a fashion designer, just like her. I never imagined that I would meet her in France. There are many famous fashion designers out there, like Guccio Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Coco Chanel, Christine Dior and Karl Lagerfeld. I like Coco Chanel the most because she was one of the first who had designed pants (slacks) for females. Also, she designed the garconne-look. This style means simple and comfortable. In addition to the elegant clothes, she also designed chic hats, dazzling jewelry, dapper handbags and classy perfume. “A woman who doesn’t wear perfume has no future,” she uttered and continued her story about her perfume Chanel No.5. One day, she wanted to spoil her good customers with a real special perfume. She asked her one friend for help. Her friend came up with ten samples and labeled them from No.1 to No.10. Chanel chose No.5 and named it Chanel No.5. But why did she just call it No.5? Because No.5 is her lucky number and most of her designs were done in 5 days!! Then she told me another story about her classic handbag Chanel 2.55. She designed this bag in the 1920s, but it was not launched until after World War II in February 1955. That’s where the “2.55” comes from. I professed excitedly, ”Chanel is not only top fashion, but also an awesome style. ” Chanel was very happy to hear that, so she gave me a black Chanel 2.55. I was the luckiest girl in the world. “Nana! Nana! Wake up! Wake up!” When I opened my eyes, it was my dear Mom. Oh - my goddess! Where is my perfume No. 5? Where is my 2.55 bag? And where is my Coco Chanel? What a special day to remember!!! Beowulf By Johnny Kuo, Grade 5 Yellow Instructed by Mr.van der Merwe In the early sixth century, there was a kingdom called Denmark. Beowulf was a great warrior, and he killed three terrible monsters. The first monster was Grendel. It was a kind of monster which liked to eat people. The second monster was Grendel’s mom. The third monster was the toughest - it was a dragon. Denmark had a great king called Hrothgar and he made the kingdom rich. So one year they celebrated the year’s prosperity and bounty. They danced and sang, but the sound of songs woke up the scary monster, Grendel. Grendel killed all the guards effortlessly and silently during the night. When everyone woke up, they were shocked. So, since that night they couldn’t sleep properly anymore. Then an army came. It was an army from Hecylags. When the king saw them, he was ecstatic. Beowulf was the prince of Hecylags. When he finished listening to the story of Grendel, he said "Grendel never brings any weapons. I won’t, either. I will just wear my armor and fight him!" So he went to the place Grendel would visit. When the monster came, Beowulf jumped up and started to fight. It was a tough battle, but at last Beowulf cut Grendel’s arm off, so Grendel shrieked and dashed back to his home. When the war was over, they had a party, and soon they fell asleep. Grendel had a mom, she was a sea hag. So, she dashed through the dark and took Grendel’s arm back to her nest. In the morning, Beowulf found out who stole Grendel’s arm. He went to the hag’s nest; he swam down the lake and had a fight with Grendel’s mom. It was more challenging than his last one. At last he used a magic sword to kill the hag and chopped Grendel’s head off. After this, he went back to his kingdom to be the king. The last war was with the dragon. They fought for a long time and eventually he killed the dragon, but he got hurt too much resulting in his death. His army buried him in a grave made from stones. The grave was beside the sea. And so ended the lives of the horrific monsters and sadly Beowulf’s too. My All Time Favorite Camp By Amy Kuo, Grade 5 Yellow Instructed by Mr.van der Merwe My mom entered me into an amazing camp during the summer vacation last year. It was the best camp I have ever been to! It was on a mountain in Wan-Lei. They have a cool name for it: Camp Taiwan. The first time I got there, the topic was Warriors. Last year, the topic was about the Olympics. I have a special memory of last year … It was the week we had a typhoon, so we all had to move to the Da-Tong Elementary School. We slept in the library. The wind was devastating and terrible so it very well would have destroyed our tent. We stayed there for about three to four days. It was a real special week. We had a super important thing to do before we ate. What was it? It was to sing with the counselors! The songs in Camp Taiwan are cool and fun. This year, our topic was Hawaii! I was in the Light Blue team. It was the most teams that Camp Taiwan ever had. I think I was really lucky. There were five girls – Joanna, Emma, Betty, Ellen and I. Our counselor was Venus. She was kind and pretty. Venus is from Hong-Kong. We played Giant swing, Zip Line and many other fun games. We had a journal to write every day. I had an awesome week with my friends. We had a camp fire on the first day and the last day. We all had a talent show on the last day. We danced a hula dance. We all love marshmallows with cookies, so we had some over the fire during campfire time. I love Camp Taiwan. It was the best wild camp I have ever been on. I miss every counselor like Venus, Tiffany, Candal, Abby, Yani and everyone else. I enjoy Camp Taiwan a lot! Grade 6! 6 Zhi The Trip to Hokkaido By Andy Chen, 6 Zhi Instructed by Tina Liu I think I’m the luckiest person in the world because I have a wonderful family. We like to do a lot of things, but the best thing of all is to go on a trip. We have been to so many places, such as Taroko Gorge, Taichung, and Korea. Among those places, I like Hokkaido the most. I was in second grade when I went to Hokkaido. It was my first time taking the plane. It took us two hours to get there. We were so hungry when we landed, so we went to eat Ramen. It tasted really good. After that, we went to the hotel and changed our clothes to kimonos. We were just like Japanese! We went shopping that night. The streets in Japan were much cleaner than in Taipei. There were no garbage or cigarettes on the streets. We bought some cookies and medicine. Then we went back to the hotel and got ready for tomorrow. On the second day, we went on a hot air balloon ride. Though it was just five minutes, it was still a lot of fun. After that, we went to the most famous farm, Furano. The ice cream there was really sweet. I loved it! The farm was almost three hundred acres. We saw bees and butterflies flying over the flowers. We took some photos there. The flowers I liked the most were lavenders. They were purple, and they smelled wonderful! On the third day, we went to the city. People there were really nice. We even met some Taiwanese tourists. We saw some shops selling dolls, desserts and tickets. Then we took the rickshaw to Otaru. There was a river there, and there were fish swimming in the river, too. In the evening, we went to the hot spring. The quality of the hot spring was good. At night, we played Bingo in the hotel. My sister was so lucky! She won a prize! On the last day, we went shopping. The shopping mall was very big. There were clothes stores and restaurants. My mom bought some sushi and puffs for our lunch. After our shopping, we went to the Ocean Park. We watched the dolphin show. The dolphins were so cute. At last, we went back to the airport and finished our trip. Next time, I want to go to Tokyo. Good bye! Hokkaido! Charles Brown – A Tall Tale by Vincent Kuo, Grade 6 Red Instructed by Mr. Dirk du Plessis In 1970, a man called Charles Brown lived in a village near Tainan. He was a poor but an optimistic farmer, who lived in a tattered old house. Charles had a body like a giant. Strangely enough, he was friendly to animals, but not popular amongst humans. Charles lived in an ideal and joyful village. It was a peaceful village, so all the villagers were friendly. Everyone was kind, and they made the village a very happy place. They didn’t have any threats so they lived happily. Lots of disasters were however to raid this village. It was doomed and almost destroyed. Many people died during an earthquake. Belongings were scattered all over the town, by the tornado that followed. Finally this caused floods that threatened the rest of the town. Charles saw what was happening and wanted to save the village. He just couldn’t look on indifferently, while the village was being destroyed. First of all he saved all the survivors through sure strength and determination. He led them all to an escape route. Next, he saved the life of a boy who was trapped under the rubble, by lifting the whole roof. Then, he held up an enormous bridge which was about to collapse. And finally he stopped all these disasters by his prayers. All the villagers wanted to rebuild their village and this was where Charles showed his sheer determination and energy. He managed to get the necessary funds for this process. He married the most beautiful girl in the village, and lived happily ever after. Until today the villagers still sing the same songs to tell about their savior, Charles Brown. Me, Myself and I by Jasmine Ling, Grade 6 Red Instructed by Mr. Dirk du Plessis I’m 11 years old. I live in the District of Yonghe in New Taipei City. I’m 1.63 m tall. I was born on November 11, 2001. I have dark skin (healthy color), big feet and long fingers. I have a bunch of long black hair, which I often tie into a ponytail. I’m an optimistic and outgoing person. Firstly, I’m very good at speaking to my classmates in English class. All the girls include me in their chatting groups. We’re so noisy sometimes that I realized that “I’m actually a talkative person.” Secondly I’m very good at playing the piano, I don’t know whether I’m actually THAT good or not, but that’s what my brother told me. He said that I’m the best musician in the world. That made me really proud. Then, I’m very good at writing whether it is Chinese or English. I really love to write. Recently I represented my school at a competition. Finally, I joined Taekwondo classes, and my coach told me that I made the fastest progress of all the students. I really want to improve in all of these. “Practice makes perfect” they say, and that’s what I want to do. I’ll be focused and work even harder than before. I want to reach for the sky! Robinson Kou by James Chang, Grade 6 Red Instructed by Mr. Dirk du Plessis Once upon a time, there was a small town in a forest called Honest Town. In the town lived a boy called Robinson. He loved animals so he always went to the forest to play with them. As he grew up, he found work on a farm besides the forest. He was well known by the children in Honest Town. He also knew a lot of games. He was by far the best chess player, kicking and catching ghosts. Being a responsible person he accomplished a lot of things. He was trusted by many people. One day a big black bear came to Honest Town. It destroyed the fence of the village, and caused a lot of damage on the farm. As Robin came to work the next day, he saw that the animals were killed. He dug a hole and set up a snare to catch the bear. He covered the hole with leaves and waited. Not long after the bear was trapped. Robinson awaited it behind a huge elephant tree. Finally the colossal bear was killed by Robinson, only using his knife. When he arrived back in town he was cheered and had a big welcome by the villagers. He became the biggest hero the town had ever had. He carried on with his daily job of helping people whenever he could. For years after, the people kept on singing the same songs that were written about him. Tiffany, The Extraordinary Heroine - A Tall Tale By Cherry Chiang, 6 Yellow Instructed by Ms. Lolit Chen In a small, dark and remote park, someone could be heard mumbling. “Ha ha , it’s so funny! Oh, and do you know that…” What!? Was ”SHE” talking with plants? What a strange girl! But everyone didn’t know that Tiffany was a special girl with some incredible abilities. She could have a conversation or even play and dance with plants and animals! Tiffany loved and protected nature SO MUCH, so she really enjoyed it whenever she could have a small talk with nature and its living things - the animals and plants. But in her class at school, everybody thought Tiffany was gloomy as a ghost. And everyone excluded her from their groups. Classmates were heard to have muttered things like, ”Yuck! I don’t want to be in the same group with GHOST!” or ”No! Go away!” Tiffany had no friends in her class. So she decided to only make friends with nature. And do you know when Tiffany discovered her special ability? It was in grade one! Everyone learned about her ability and from that time on, she had NO friends in her class anymore. “La, la, la, la, la,~” Tiffany sang as she was walking on the street one day, singing and dancing all the way. Somebody might ask what could be the good thing that had happened to her that she was singing on the street? Ha, ha - it was because Tiffany was going to the park and play with her animal friends! When she arrived at the park, she heard that plants and animals were discussing and planning something secretly… Tiffany was VERY curious to know what they were talking about! So she walked. nearer and listened carefully…. “What!!!” Tiffany was shocked to learn that they were planning to kill humans because they thought humans were so selfish and were always doing a lot of things that damaged the environment. Plants and animals would kill humans quickly. ”No, I can’t let it happen! I must save the human race!” Tiffany thought, although she had no human friends. Tiffany was really a kind-hearted person. She still wanted to prevent war between humans and nature. Tiffany tried to understand both sides and the cause of these ill feelings. ”Hmm…I think humans are not that bad. The damages done to nature happened in most cases because they were in need of resources, so maybe I can think of other ways to solve the problem. And certainly not by having war with them,” Tiffany said. ”Yeah, maybe she’s right! If there is war between us, both sides will be hurt! So we should find other ways to solve this,” a tree said. ”But how?” a kangaroo asked. “I think I have found a way to deal with this! That is to…” Tiffany whispered to the plants and animals secretly. The plants and animals went along with Tiffany’s plan and followed the things that Tiffany said. After they have implemented the plan, humans and nature did not have any problem anymore!!! The president of the country knew what happened, and he relayed the heroism of Tiffany to all the citizens of the land. Everybody called her ”heroine” and not ”ghost” anymore. All of her classmates became her friends! Of course, all the other living things in nature remained her best friends. Tony, the Mammoth – A Tall Tale By Edan Huang, 6 Yellow Instructed by Ms. Lolit Chen Once upon a time, there was a person named Tony. He was a giant, he was like a mammoth. His height was 10 meters. He lived in the deep parts of the Pacific Ocean. Tony could breathe both underwater and on land. Why didn’t he live on land? He used to, but everyone drove him away. This was because when he was living on land, he liked to jump around. You see, Tony had a special ability, and that was when he jumped, the place where he jumped would sink. Nobody knew why. Maybe because his feet were large, and he was heavy. At that time, America and Canada had a big problem. They didn’t know where the border of their countries was. Both wanted to get more territory, so these two countries fought for land. Everyone in America and Canada was very anxious to find a solution to this problem. People worried about the future of their country. Tony didn’t want to see the two countries fight because of a bad experience when he was a child. He wanted peace, not war. But he didn’t know what to do. So he went to ask Basil, the smartest person in the world. Basil’s intelligence quotient was 200. However, when Tony asked for his advice, he couldn’t give him a clear answer. He was already too old to think! So Tony went back to his place under the ocean to do some serious thinking. While he was there, a dangerous phenomenon, an ocean earthquake, occurred! Tony quickly jumped back on land. An amazing thing happened. And you can guess what that was! The place where he jumped into sank and created a huge crater. The crater became deeper and water started flowing in. There was very strong current, and people couldn’t cross it. Everyone thought that a beautiful new landmark was created. That place is now known as the Niagara Falls, and it became the dividing line between the USA and Canada. These two countries never fought about their border again. The world became peaceful, and everyone felt contented. Tony became a hero, and was welcomed by everyone to live on land again.
