CHIP & SCAN How to Implant (Scan-Scan-Chip-Scan) © 2009 Bayer HealthCare LLC, Animal Health Division, Shawnee Mission, Kansas 66201 Bayer, the Bayer Cross and resQ are registered trademarks of Bayer. Chip & Scan • Scan pet to ensure that it has not been previously microchipped. • Scan the microchip to ensure that it is functional and the number matches the number on the accompanying stickers. • Open the syringe packaging. • Put on gloves. • Locate a clean, healthy area of skin dorsally, between the pet’s shoulder blades. • Part the hair and wipe the area gently with disinfectant. • Use one hand to tent the skin in the implantation area. • Insert the needle to the hub, parallel to the pet’s back as with a standard subcutaneous injection. • Depress the plunger fully until it clicks. • Do not withdraw the needle until the plunger is fully depressed. • Pinch the skin near the implant site gently while removing the needle. • Apply light pressure at the implant site, if needed, to control minor bleeding. • Scan the pet to ensure that the microchip was properly implanted. • It is recommended that the client keep the pet relatively inactive for 24 hours to allow the body time to fix the microchip in place. CHIP & SCAN (continued) How to Scan • Be sure battery is fresh and replaced regularly (or recharged if using a rechargeable unit). • Depress button and hold down during the entire scan if using the black label scanner, or depress button to turn on if using others. • Hold scanner parallel to pet and as close to (touching) the pet as it will allow. • Scan slowly and methodically, using a double “s” pattern as shown below. resQ® Scanner Troubleshooting: >> Repeat and scan more slowly. >> Replace the battery or recharge scanner. >> Hold scanner closer to pet. >> Remove metal items such as collars or tags that are on/near the pet. >> Scan the pet on the floor (rather than on a metal table) or move it to a room with no potential radio interference (scanner uses a magnetic field signal, so computer equipment, high-tension power lines, medical equipment, etc., may interfere). >> Contact Bayer for further assistance — 1-800-633-3796. © 2009 Bayer HealthCare LLC, Animal Health Division, Shawnee Mission, Kansas 66201 Bayer, the Bayer Cross and resQ are registered trademarks of Bayer. PET TRAVEL International Pet Travel Resources The key to helping your clients travel with their pets is to plan early and plan carefully.
