August 2015 THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE A Newsletter for Family & Friends of Lindley College What’s Inside The Buzz The Dolphins The Fury The Hurricanes The Mosaics The Phoenix The Stingrays The Thundercats THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE THE BUZZ Wellness | Relationships | Career Exposure | Community Service Out in the Community With the perfect weather we had been having our group decided to go on a boat ride at City Lake Park. The group enjoyed the beautiful sites and sounds of nature. In addition to the peaceful water the students saw different animals, islands, and beautiful homes by the lake. If you get a chance, we definitely recommend going for a ride at the park. At the High Point Library, located in downtown High Point, our group saw "Robin Hood" the play. This production consisted of 2 actors one male and one female, who switch off playing different characters. This play was free and open to the public. The show was full of fun and excitement with interaction with the audience. The students had a great time and enjoyed the show. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE Interview With… We took a trip to Deep Roots in Greensboro to interview the Assistant Manager Rebecca. Question 1 How long have you been in business? We have been here since 1976. Question 2 How much does it cost to become one of the owners of the store? It is only $100 to become an owner of the business. Also, as a owner you receive discounts on all of your purchases at the store. Question 3 Is it very expensive to shop here? Not necessarily, we believe it's a fair price for quality products. Question 4 Do you only have food for people that don't eat meat? No, we have food for almost everyone's specific dietary needs. Question 5 Does some of your products come from local farmers? Yes, actually all our products are from local suppliers & farmers. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE THE DOLPHINS Wellness | Relationships | Career Exposure | Community Service Electives This summer we explored the continent of Europe. We learned about Germany, Italy, Ireland and Spain. We learned fun facts about each country and hot topics surrounding those countries. We sampled recipes and enjoyed their music. We learned some words in the language or learned to write our name. We found out that all of the countries love to play soccer. Next month- off to Africa! Out in the Community This month we have been able to get outside in the sunshine as well as chill out at the movies. We divided into groups and had a scavenger hunt on the waterfront. Did you know we had to find a horse and carriage, a musician, a water taxi, a sculpture of a giant Venus Fly Trap and about a dozen more! Our group found everything except the red leather suit! THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE Interview With… This month we choose to interview Alphanzo Parez. He Is responsible for managing a visiting Spanish Galleon to our port in Wilmington. The name of this ship is the El Galeon. Many of us were able to tour its decks, while others learned about the history of this 16th century floating museum. Brendan and Ben took a video so others could see 'below'. We hope to tour other ships to compare them in the future. Question 1 What is the purpose of this ship? Answer 1 Back in the day it was sent from the King of Spain to explore the American Coastline. This "museum" was built to look like the ship that discovered St. Augustine (Florida). Question 2 How many people does it take to operate it? Answer 2 50-80. They had carpenters, cooks, sailors and many more. Now it is operated by 20 people, many are volunteers. Question 3 What makes it 'go'? Answer 3 Back then it only used the wind in its sails. This ship has 2 engines they can use when there is no breeze. Question 4 How old is it? Answer 4 It is 6 years old and it took 2 years to build. Question 5 Did they were uniforms? Answer 5 Back then only the soldiers did, not the crew. They protected the people and supplies they carried from pirates. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE THE FURY Wellness | Relationships | Career Exposure | Community Service New Students High Point City Lake Park Megan started Lindley College with the determination to use this opportunity as stepping stone to learn job skills and make positive friendships. Out in the Community Shawn started at Lindley College by only coming 2 half days, but he loved it so much that he now comes 4 days a week (and is working on getting the 5th day!) We love seeing Shawn’s bright smile and cheerful attitude! We got a wonderful break from the August heat by taking a relaxing boat ride at the High Point City Lake Park. The lake is a a manmade 340 acre lake that the city of High Point uses for it’s drinking water. During our 45 minute cruise, Captain Tom pointed important plants and animals that are indigenous to the lakeside area. Thank you to Ann Sprinkle for setting up this relaxing cruise and to Captain Tom for sharing your years of experience with us! THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE Jennifer-August 11 Interview With… Bethany traveled to Beijing, China to work with New Day Foster Home to teach the staff working there and children living there ASL. Bethany shared with our students photos and memories of her summer in Japan and China. Ryan-August 22 Question 1: Why did you go to China? I went to work with Deaf kids and help them learn more American Sign Language. Question 2: We learned how to make spring rolls when we studied the Asian countries and they were really good. Did you have any really good food? I love their dumplings, sweet and sour chicken, and rice!!! Question 3: Are there any cultural customs that you had to learn while you were traveling? Typically most people in Asia do NOT point with their finger, they mostly indicate with their whole hand. Question 4: Did you travel to China by yourself or did you go with friends? And did you make any friends while you were in China (and how do you keep in touch with them)? I went by myself but lived with a group of people all over the world. I made lifelong awesome friends. I use the app WeChat to keep in touch with my Chinese friends. Question 5: Your pictures show you going to a lot of different places. Do you have a favorite place that you visited? The wild Great Wall! No other people but our small group in the middle of no where! THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE THE HURRICANES Wellness | Relationships | Career Exposure | Community Service Highlights This month, we went to the newly built pool at Hagan Stone Park with all of the other groups. After making sure we all had on sunscreen, we jumped in the pool and enjoyed the sunshine. We ate pizza, salad, and watermelon for lunch. We really enjoyed going down the water slides! We had an awesome time with our friends here at Lindley College. Fun Times at Lindley College This month we wanted to try something a little different. We made homemade paint for our art projects. The recipe is simple: 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 1/2 cup water. Mix until smooth, then divide it up into three sandwich bags and add a few drops of liquid water color or food coloring to each bag. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE New Students Interview With… We had a chance to ride the Amtrak to Discovery Place in Charlotte, NC. There were interactive, hands-on exhibits that cover a variety of scientific concepts like physics and earth science. On our way to Charlotte, we interviewed Maxine to learn more about Amtrak Our new student is Nikki T. She enjoys spending time with her dog Sergeant. During her free time, she loves watching Disney movies and searching through magazines for the latest fashions. Question 1 How can someone apply for a job at Amtrak? Answer 1 You have to set up a profile and apply online. Question 2 How many trains are owned by Amtrak? Answer 2 more than 300 trains each day on 21,300 miles of track. Question 3 What is the most exciting part of working for Amtrak? Answer 3 The most exciting part about working for Amtrak is getting the opportunity to learn about all the railroad systems. Question 4 Does every student on the train get a cool sticker? Answer 4 Yes, all students get a neat sticker when they ride with us. Question 5 Why do you like volunteering here? Answer 5 I love to travel. That’s really why i volunteer my time so I can see new places. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE THE MOSAICS Wellness | Relationships | Career Exposure | Community Service Fun Times at Lindley College We made ice cream! We used half and half, sugar, vanilla and ice in plastic bags. We topped the ice cream with whipped cream and sprinkles. It was cool eating it out of ziplock bags! We made Kenyan pastries. They are called samosas. We filled the pastries with berries and apples. We topped them with whipped cream and powdered sugar. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE Interview With… We went to the Bicentennial Garden in Kernersville, NC. We toured the garden and we picked different kinds of vegetables. We picked squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, and lots of other veggies! Question 1 Who waters the plants? Answer 1 There is an automatic watering system, but we have gardeners as well on the hot days to help. Question 2 Who plants the plants? Answer 2 We have 3 gardeners that do the majority of the work. Question 3 Who does the tours? Answer 3 We have volunteers that help us lead the tours through our garden. Question 4 What else do you do here? Answer 4 We hold meetings, weddings and many other events here. Question 5 Do you plan to build anything else here? Answer 5 We have plans to expand our garden tremendously. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE THE PHOENIX Wellness | Relationships | Career Exposure | Community Service Electives Interview With… The Phoenix group went with the other groups to see the replica Spanish galleon ship in downtown Wilmington and interviewed some of the crew members. This month we learned about Kenya and Egypt. Our students learned about the different types of language that are spoken throughout Africa. Each student researched their name in different African languages. We also found out the history of the ancient tombs, and how they were now turned into graves after the Renaissance period. Question 1 Has this ship been in any movies? Answer 1 El Galeon was featured on the NBC series, “Crossbones.” Question 2 How many decks does this ship have? Answer 2 This ship has 6 decks. Question 3 Why did pirates target this ship? Answer 3 Because of the ships size and precious cargo. Question 4 What time period was this ship active? Answer 4 It was most active in the 1600’s. Question 5 Is this replica ship the same size as the original? Answer 5 Yes, this ship is an exact replica of the original. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE Fun Times at Lindley College This month we had our end of summer celebration! We had BBQ and low country boil along with music, games, and an epic water fight!! THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE THE STINGRAYS Wellness | Relationships | Career Exposure | Community Service Highlights This month the Stingrays finished their tour of Europe with visits to Spain and Italy. The students made paintings in the style of Pablo Picasso. We learned about the bullfighters in Spain and the running of the bulls. The students made Spanish rice as a cooking activity and enjoyed learning colors, numbers, and a few phrases in Spanish. For Italy we learned about the Capital city of Rome. We learned about Vatican City which is a very small country inside Italy that is the seat of the Catholic Church and where the pope resides. We made "tile" mosaics out of dried beans which was a lot fun fun and turned out very pretty. Next stop was the continent of Africa. We visited Kenya where we learned about many of the different animals that live there. We learned that Swahili is the language spoken there and tried to learn a few phrases. We learned that it is very hot there. Last stop was Egypt where we learned about the ancient Pharaohs or kings of Egypt. We learned about the pyramids and mummies. We talked about the Nile river and how it flows from south to North and is vitally important to the country. In cooking we made Egyptian omelettes Also this month, a replica of a Spanish ship, El Galleon sailed into wilmington powered by the wind in its sails. The students toured the ship. Many commented that their favorite part was seeing the cannons and cannon balls. Students also joined into teams to participate in a scavenger hunt downtown. Students had to find a musical instrument, a postcard of Wilmington, and a military monument just to name a few. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE Interview With… Lindley Waves showed off their organizational skills on Thursday, august 20. A large group of students and staff ventured out to the MLK center to pack book bags with school supplies for the second annual back to school bash. We opened many boxes of supplies, formed a production line and filled the book bags with notebook paper, notebooks, pens and pencils to name a few items.We filled 300 bags in only 45 minutes, all the while having a great time. Over all 2500 bags were distributed the following Saturday to needy children in Wilmington. We look forward to many more volunteer activities. Fun was had by all for a great cause. Question 1 Who gets the book bags? Answer 1 Children in Wilmington who may not be able to aford school supplies. Question 2 How many bags will be given away? Answer 2 2500. Question 3 What grades are they for? Answer 3 Elementary, Middle School, and High School. Question 4 How many years have you been doing this event? Answer 4 This is the second year. Question 5 What is your favorite part of doing this? Answer 5 Knowing that we have helped children have the tools to participate and succeed in school. THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE THE THUNDERCATS Wellness | Relationships | Career Exposure | Community Service Highlights For one of our fun outings this month, we had a bowling tournament at Spare Time bowling lanes. We had a Guys Vs. Girls tournament. The girls team beat the guys with a final score of 187 to 121. Out in the Community Our group had an awesome picnic lunch at Triad Park. This is one of the largest parks in our area with swings, playgrounds, and several fields to play kick ball or soccer. We had turkey sandwiches, chips, and juice. After lunch, we all played several group games! THE COLLEGE CHRONICLE Interview With… The Thundercats had the chance to visit our local animal shelter and see some of the animals looking for new homes. During our visit, we interview Mr. Robert to learn more about their operations. Question 1 Do you allow people to volunteer here at the shelter? Answer 1 Yes, we welcome kind and hard working volunteers. Question 2 Are all of the animals here up for adoption? Answer 2 While we have many animals looking for new homes, not all of them are ready for adoption. Question 3 How many volunteers can you have onsite per day? Answer 3 Typically we will have 4-5 volunteers daily but it can change depending on our needs. Question 4 How long has this shelter been serving this area? Answer 4 We have been here since 1998. Question 5 Are people allowed to give monetary donations? Answer 5 Yes, they can give in person or online.
