They are the teachable moments we create through Senior Rabbi................................. ext. 224 personal example. Religious School is up and running, our B’nai Mitzvah students are getting ready to take their turns at the pulpit, and staff, volunteers, and lay leaders are working diligently on behalf of our congregants. Yes, autumn has arrived, and with it, more of the future. Ray Berkt In fact, the future is all around us. As president of the Temple, I see it every day. It is there when we look at our children — we see in them hope and promise for the future of our congregation and our people. We see it in the bride and groom as they exchange their vows and promise to maintain a Jewish home. Even when we recite the Kaddish, the focus is on the living and the future. As Jews, we work to make the future a better place. We do not dwell on the past — we remember it, learn from it, and move forward. At the Temple, each event, each action, and each occasion may be occurring in the present, but it is all about the future. When we visit the sick, when we feed and shelter the homeless, when we teach our children in Religious School, when we study the Torah, when we conduct our services, when we do all that we do, the impact may be immediate, but the ramifications continue to reverberate. Importantly, we see the future in the work of our staff and volunteers. A good example is the High Holy Days. They may have just ended, but preparations for next year’s holidays have already begun. Sure, the bulk of the work will come later, but our staff and clergy are already analyzing and critiquing the past holidays and laying the groundwork for next year. The work of each of the Temple’s regular 32 committees also is felt in the future. In addition, the future is the focus of a number of specially created committees whose work will impact all of us. I have previously mentioned some of these committees, but not others. The Religious School Director Search Committee, chaired by Loren Elliot and Ralph Levy, will determine the future direction of our Religious School. The Cemetery Task Force, chaired by Betty Lee Rosen and Gus Kuhn, will decide what improvements will be made at our existing cemetery. The Temple Gift Shop Committee, chaired by Martha Nemer, will put in place a retail operation that utilizes state of the art technology, featuring diverse, top of the line items. And the Fund Raising Committee, chaired by Chris McPherson, will plan and implement a Temple fundraiser for next spring. Your staff, volunteers, and lay leaders understand and appreciate the promise of the future, but we also know that sometimes the future can be a challenge, as Bruce Springsteen aptly noted in “Glory Days”: Now I think I’m going down to the well tonight and I’m going to drink till I get my fill And I hope when I get old I don’t sit around thinking about it but I probably will Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture a little of the glory of, well time slips away and leaves you with nothing mister but boring stories of glory days At the Temple, we are doing our best to make certain that our “glory days” are ahead of us, and always will be.Whether it is in your personal life, or in your work on behalf of our Congregation, I encourage you to do the same. While studies show that both low income and English Learners (ELL) are most likely to benefit from completing homework, they are least likely to get the help they need. Their parents are often unable to provide assistance with homework because of limited English proficiency, limited formal education, and incompatible work schedules. If the homework is not completed, or if completed incorrectly, they are placed at a cumulative disadvantage--for failed opportunities to learn, negative teacher perceptions, lower academic self-efficacy, and academic disengagement over time. Temple funding is being used to provide professional bilingual tutoring in Somalian and Spanish. Students will follow the Introduction to Judaism syllabus prepared by Rabbi Mackler, and engage in conversations with her and Patty Marks, past President of The Temple. Those seeking to learn more about Judaism will grow as a group and continue on their individual Journeys toward becoming Jewish. Students will keep a journal about their journey, and sessions nearer to holidays will include indepth learning about those celebrations and customs. Rabbi Mackler will continue to meet with each student individually periodically throughout the course. Students may join throughout the year, and there is no expectation of conversion upon completion of the syllabus. This is a way to learn together and to take these next steps toward becoming Jewish, living and leading a meaningful Jewish life. Lunch with the Rabbi Thursdays 11:30 am at The Temple Beginning October 10th Religious School by Lynda Gutcheon Opening of Religious School Begins with Cake and Drums! On Sunday, September 22, 2013, our Religious School year began with two separate special programs along with Consecration rehearsal, Hebrew classes and a moving reflective exercise of self-growth in our 7th grade. Students in grades 5-10 began the year by watching the moving documentary “The Cake Lady”, produced and directed by our own Adam Hirsch. It is the story of an 89-year-old woman who reminds us to count our blessings everyday even if we are living through struggles and sadness. Adam, who joined us to comment on his film, said “she just makes cakes for others, even if she doesn’t know them, just to make them happy.” It was a great message to remind us of the blessings in our own lives. Students in Kindergarten through 4th grade participated in a Jewish Blessings Drum Circle. Surrounded by hundreds of drums and percussion instruments, our students drummed their way through different blessings and rumbled the highs and lows of pounding sounds. Sue Epstein, a Jewish professional Drum Circle leader from Los Angeles, led the morning. The morning concluded with each student taking home their own little drum. Left: Margo Ghertner, president of this years’ Confirmation class, helps decorate our Congregational Succah at our opening Confirmation dinner. Right: Adam Hirsch and Lynda Gutcheon (far Left) welcome the Israeli delegation, who have been here in Nashville for more than a week now. Hadar Moscowitz and Harriet Schiftan (far right) have been instrumental in making all the arrangements for these teachers. Above: Consecration students, under the musical direction of our own Jan Huettner, prepare for their Consecration by rehearsing their songs and poem. 4th Graders discuss blessings, gratefulness, and forgiveness and learn it’s all intertwinded! Here are some examples: Left: Students form a drum circle to celebrate blessings. Right: Sue Epstein, Jewish Drum Leader from Los Angeles, encourages Abigail Green to lead the group in different drum rhythms. page 10 ~ October 2013 - www.templenashville.org - 615-352-7620 Dear Mom, I am really sorry I talked back to you. I just didn’t think before I spoke. I hope you can forgive me. Dear Mom & Dad, Thank you so, so much for being my parents. I have had a wonderful 9 years. I can not wait for the more years I will be with you. You guys are wonderful parents. Dear Mom, Thank you for being the best Mommy ever. I am happy Dad married you. You are silly and caring and nice, etc. I will always love you. Thank you. -- Preschool by Jan Huettner & Corye Nelson A Child’s Guide to the City This month we would like to share some exciting news! While attending a course at the Reggio Exhibit in Henderson, Kentucky, Corye Nelson, Moon Bishop (one of our preschool teachers), and Elle Harvey (principal of A New Leaf School), were inspired by their class to develop a relationship between early childhood education and our greater community. From this idea a new project called “A Children’s Guide to the City” that will pair the Temple Preschool’s classrooms with community partners in the city of Nashville was created. As this concept develops, each participating class will have a chance to actually visit their chosen store or building in our community and cultivate a relationship there, as well as to display a citywide exhibit. The goal of this project is to connect our unique community of Nashville to some of our best preschools in the city. Based on the children’s interests and ideas, the teachers and students will develop a project that will require extensive investigation and explorations. After weeks of study and discoveries, this project will culminate with a spring citywide display that will be featured in select buildings and retail stores across the city. We encourage these projects to be showcased in stores unique to Nashville, rather than outlet or department stores. The spring exhibition will feature sketches, paintings, sculptures, stories, photographs and other works by our students. Documentation about the techniques used and the history of the project will be included at the site. Also on display will be an information board/ poster explaining the citywide project with information about our preschool, and the location of other sites in our area that will be displaying these exhibits. Preschools throughout the state including Cookeville, Johnson City, and Chattanooga will also be participating in this important connection between their cities and their schools. By helping our children develop a confidence and excitement about their relationships, their world and the world around them, we embrace the Reggio philosophy and become a part of our wonderful community of Nashville. As we continue to work on this new project, we will update you on the locations and dates that the children will be exhibiting their work. Monday, April 28th, has been set for the installation of these displays. We would also like to pass along an e-mail we received from Doug Adair (our diaper drive coordinator). The “count” from our first pick-up of diapers was 1,472 that were donated by our preschool and Temple families. He said that this was a wonderful way to start this project and he was very excited and extremely grateful for what we were doing for babies and families in need in Nashville. As we continue to build relationships with this wonderful city, we remind you that you can drop off new or unused diapers in the baby crib located at the entrance to the preschool.
