Events & Activities G&L County Cork Stage The expansive G&L County Cork Stage is the home for some of the Festival’s biggest acts, including the Tionól on Saturday afternoon and Catholic Mass on Sunday morning. County Kerry Stage Nestled between the Wee Ones’ Area and The Irish Store, the County Kerry Stage features outstanding entertainment throughout the weekend. The Pub The heartbeat of the Festival. Laketon Ave. This event features a variety of Irish dancers competing at levels from Beginners to Open, Pre-lim, and Championship. The Parade of Champions will perform on Saturday at 6pm at the Festival on the Galway Stage. Celtic Canines Sunday 12:00pm - 4:00pm • Dingle Peninsula Come meet the dog breeds that originated from the Emerald Isle! If you’ve ever considered owning one of these Irish breeds, you’ll have the opportunity to talk with breed owners and educate yourself on whether the breed is right for you. Owners also will give a brief informative talk about their dog, from its characteristics to what the breed was originally intended to do. Located at the Dingle Peninsula near the Main Gate. Cultural & Dance The Galway and Blarney Stages are the home for all cultural presentations, dancers, and the popular Hooley Dance Party on Friday night! Stop in for a story-telling session and learn firsthand about some of the traditions that make the Irish culture so fascinating, or experience some fantastic Irish dancing including the Lumbertown Cloggers, Cedar Creek Cloggers, and Ardan Academy of Irish Dance. Genealogy and Irish Names Presented by Barbara Scanlon Join Barbara Scanlon and her husband Ed to research your history and connections to the Emerald Isle and Irish culture using search engines and existing records. Barb will do a morning presentation on Saturday and Sunday and be available for consultation throughout the festival. Kennedy & Kennedy Seamus Kennedy and joHn Kennedy (from Kennedy’s Kitchen) will unite again for an impromptu program of music, humor, and conversation. The Beggarmen Reunion Seamus Kennedy and Tom O’Carroll Seamus Kennedy and Tom O’Carroll were in college together but did not start playing together until they began performing around New York City. O’Carroll from Dublin and Kennedy from Belfast, both relocated to the Boston area and formed a duo called “The Beggarmen,” performing from 1971-1978. Gaeltacht: How to Speak Gaelic Presentations and Ongoing Exhibit Have a great time learning and speaking the Irish language. Celtic Art History Presented by Tim Norris Muskegon Community College art instructor Tim Norris uses visual samples and shares his studied understanding of Irish art and history, unlocking the meaning and symbols behind these beautiful images of Ireland. Dublin in Song and Story Presented by Tom O’Carroll In this program, Tom tells the tales and sings the songs of his native city. This capital city on the River Liffey has an abundance of history and colorful characters and Tom will introduce you to some of them. This program is ideal for those interested in Irish literature. Understanding the Book of Kells Presented by Mike Johnson Join Muskegon Community College professor Mike Johnson in a discussion of the intersection of Celtic Art and Mythology, with an emphasis on the iconography of the Book of Kells, primarily the imagery of the serpent, the salmon, and the Tête Coupée, or disembodied head. The 1916 Easter Uprising Presented by joHn Kennedy Join joHn for songs, recitations and reflections commemorating the 1916 Easter uprising in the intimate space of the newly-named Blarney Stage. In word and song, joHn will perform works of his own, of Yeats, and others that relate to the Uprising and Ireland’s long history of struggles. What Makes Celtic Music Celtic? Presented by Larry Halverson The phrase “Celtic music” has many different meanings and is often the subject of many arguments among Celtic music lovers, however there is no right or wrong answer. Larry Halverson will present a brief history of Celtic music outlining its regions with an emphasis on Irish and Scottish music from rhythm to ornamentation to style. From Tribe to Nation: A Musical Journey Presented by Tom O’Carroll Tom traces the history of the Irish people from the Stone Age to the present. Drawing on archaeological data and historical records, Tom explores the broad social and cultural themes of conflict and identity that occur through the island’s history, incorporating various songs, tunes, and little known anecdotes that bring to life the story of the Irish. Ward Music Archives Exhibit This year’s exhibit is taken from more than 140 postcards in the Bob Burke Postcard Collection at the Archives that show the great amount of destruction in Dublin during and after the 1916 Easter Uprising, featuring some of the leaders of the rebellion and soldiers from both sides. Dave Curley Sessions Dave Curley of Slide is hosting a series of interactive workshops including an overview of some of Ireland’s social and group dances, a percussion demonstration covering basic technique and rhythm styles in Irish Music (bring your drums!), and an introduction to Irish traditional music and instruments featuring Diana Ladio (Moxie Strings), and Liam Ladewski (Kennedy’s Kitchen). Lumbertown Beard Bout Presented by Lumbertown Beard Barons A family-friendly beard and mustache competition celebrating facial hair of all shapes and sizes along with the cultural significance of beards in Ireland. Cathy Jo Smith Cathy Jo Smith mixes history and folklore, stories and songs. The whole family will enjoy her stories; tales of the Good People of Ireland and their unpredictability, a leprechaun or pooka tale, or a song from folklore. Learn How to Play the Bodhrán Presented by Lisa Groot This hands-on presentation is a great introduction to percussion and Irish music. The heartbeat of Irish music, the bodhrán is traditionally made with a wooden body and a goat-skin head and is played with a double-headed stick called a cipín, tipper, or beater. In this session, pizza boxes and pencils stand in as great instruments for this workshop for all ages. Irish Magic Show Performed by Debbie O’Carroll Through amazing stage magic, physical comedy, audience participation, participants are introduced a clan of intriguing characters from Irish children’s literature. They’ll meet a comical ghostly Pooka, learn an Irish language poem about a Banshee, discover the secrets of the Gruagach, meet an elusive sea serpent called the Ollphéist, and encounter a crafty Far Darrig and a mischievous Leprechaun.
