XTS W Bearing Condition Monitoring System
XTS-W: a proven system
to maximise revenue
XTS-W bearing condition monitoring system for large 2-stroke diesel engines
efficient, cost-effective,
relevant solutions
AMOT has been a pioneering manufacturer of
quality components for marine rotating machinery
since 1948 – and innovation is something we’ve
become very good at.
The XTS-W is a unique, cost-effective and relevant
solution that breaks new ground in marine condition
monitoring systems.
We continue to work closely alongside the technical
teams of our customers to ensure our solutions
meet their ever-changing needs.
We look forward to working with you.
AMOT remains a wholly-owned subsidiary of Roper
Industries Inc. (NYSE: ROP) a publicly traded
company.
a proven solution to
maximise revenue
and reduce costs
Asset Protection
The XTS-W bearing condition monitoring system is a
predictive maintenance warning system. It assesses
the rate of degradation of the bearing, allowing
appropriate corrective action to be taken, thus avoiding
consequential damage, costly unplanned repairs and
loss of revenue. It avoids unnecessary opening of
engines and bearings and therefore minimises the
exposure of key personnel to potentially hazardous
situations, offering a safer working environment.
Reduced maintenance costs
A major benefit of installing the XTS-W system is
maximising the time for controlled engine shut-down
and ship manoeuvres, while allowing for the most
cost-effective planned maintenance.
Maximum Availability
The XTS-W continually measures the condition of the
bearing, offering an intuitive and reliable definitive
measuring device. The full life potential of the bearing
can be assessed and in-service time maximised. Easily
installed, the XTS-W is suitable for both new build
installations and retrofitting to existing engines.
Proven Product
The XTS-W bearing condition monitoring system has
been fully tested and is now an established product,
considered to be the industry standard. Approved
by MAN B&W as the best condition monitoring method
for 2-stroke crank train bearings, it offers a superior
protection to temperature control monitoring. The
technology developed by AMOT is also recognised as
a valuable component of the Planned Maintenance
Programme acknowledged by the Classification
Societies.
introducing the XTS-W: a major step towards reducing maintenance costs and maximising revenue
The XTS-W has been developed by AMOT as a bearing condition
monitoring system for large 2-stroke engines. It indicates wear
in the full crank train: main; crankpin; and crosshead bearings.

Typical display screens

This screen shows a typical bar chart display, showing the
current status of all sensor outputs. It is on this type of
screen warning and alarm indications would be displayed,
using colours to show conditions (green, yellow, red).

crosshead bearing
How a typical system works
The XTS-W maps the characteristics of your individual engine,
ensuring accurate real time measurement of bearing thickness.
connecting rod
A typical system comprises …

crankpin bearing
2 x 4-20mA proximity sensors per cylinder mounted using
customised brackets
proximity sensor
The sensors convert any physical displacement due to bearing
wear into a pulsed electrical signal, which is sent to…

a signal processing unit (SPU) with capacity for up to 14
sensors (7 cylinders) mounted onto the engine
Each microprocessor based SPU generates continuous
signals proportional to the wear detected, compensating for
environmental and engine load conditions.
The XTS-W uses custom proximity
sensors to measure the relative position
of each guide shoe, at Bottom Dead
Centre (BDC), with respect to the
crankcase. Any significant wear in the
bearing surfaces results in a shift in this
measurement, thus facilitating early
detection of a failure. This measurement
technique is used to detect wear in the
main, crank-pin and crosshead bearings.

The SPUs are easily calibrated during “normal” running
conditions. Each sensor can be calibrated individually or
simultaneously.
This information is then sent to…

a single display and monitor unit, usually mounted in the
engine control room
This monitor provides a clear graphic display of wear data.
The unit comprises a touch-screen PC with UPS for long-term
data logging and reporting.

Test bed trials
The XTS-W has undergone rigorous test bed trials
to confirm that it will operate successfully under
real bearing failure conditions.
In order to put the equipment through its paces, the
main bearing on the test bed engine was machined
to minimise contact area.
The XTS-W clearly indicated the main bearing
problem, with the level of wear detected correlating
to the actual value within 0.05mm. No significant
long-term rise in temperature was recorded.
Sea trials
A sea trial during 2004 on a container vessel driven
by a 7 cylinder engine (7S50MC) backed up the
engine test bed findings. Moreover, it showed the
system to be totally reliable in service with no false
alarms.
protection you cannot
afford to be without
The XTS-W has many obvious benefits.

Crew safety

Predictive maintenance warning

Assesses rate of degradation, allowing
appropriate corrective action to be taken

Avoids consequential damage and high cost
of unplanned repairs
The XTS-W is simple to install, and the ship can
remain in service during installation.
Better to eliminate the risk of bearing failure.
MAN B&W Diesel
Better to fit an XTS-W.
“If such an (MBD approved) bearing wear
monitoring system is employed, MAN B&W
Diesel consider to omit open-up inspections
of all the crank train bearings.“
