Millen Earns 1st win, “Diggins”
Snaps up 1st Championship

OLYMPIA, Washington It was a cold and rainy
day in western Washington state, which suited
the Higgins brothers well – and while neither
was able to outlast the competition on this particular weekend, one of the brothers – David –
was able nonetheless to capture the overall
SCCA Drivers Championship with one event to
spare. Rhys Millen, after a particularly frustrating year, drove the rally he had to drive, placing
his well-used Lancer Evo 6.5 at the head of the
class for the first time this year.
Key Notes:
• David Higgins’ steady season of well calculated rallying proved to all that a properly
funded and staffed, completely independent
team operation (in this case AV Sport of
Tempe AZ) can find significant success rallying alongside the manufacturer supported
teams. Suffering an uncharacteristic engine
problem that cropped up early in the day,
David Higgins and co-driver Daniel Barritt
were forced to retire at the end of SS11 –
after enduring an agonizingly long 49-minute
stage for the duo that most teams were able
to complete in 14-15.
• In the Mitsubishi camp, Rhys Millen drove
what may be the best day of rallying in his
career, winning two of the days six stages
outright, and tieing another with challenger
Mark Lovell. In the cool weather, the overheating problems that have plagued this
team nearly all season were kept at bay,
and the comfort level of not only being at a
familiar rally, but also in a familiar, if older
car, paid off handsomely.
• Paul Choiniere and Jeff Becker, who may
have had the top spot this weekend were it
not for the two-punctures-on-one-stage misfortune in Day One, drove an inspired rally,
posting stage times that were nearly always
in the top three all day, and winning SS9 by
nearly a minute over Rhys Millen.
• Lovell and co-driver Steve Turvey, springing
back from a disastrous final stage in Day
One, when their transmission lost most of its
forward gears, drove a fierce game of catchup, winning two stages; but a 2-minute
bauble in SS9 effectively kept them off the
podium.
• Surprise third place overall finisher was the
Group N team of Tim O’Neil and Martin
Headland, who have been steadily working
their way towards the top spot in that category since their strong showing at Pikes
Peak. The New Hampshire and Ontario,
Canada based team did have an altercation
with a tree early in the days proceedings,
but it didn’t slow them down a bit as they
headed to their best finish of the season.
• Several other year-end championships were
decided this weekend. In Group 5, the
Brothers Hintz: David at the wheel and Rick
at the Terratrip; won this uniquely American
big-bore 2WD class in their well aged by
trusty Mazda RX-7 turbo, two minutes
ahead of 1999 Group 5 champions Henry
and Cindy Krolikowski in their borrowed
Dodge Neon SRT-4. Production class was
also decided, but in two different cars. Jon
Hamilton secured the driver’s championship
in his Soy-Diesel fueled VW Golf TDI, and
David Weiman, who seemingly has ridden in

just about every other car in the Production
class this year, finished his season riding
along with “Subie-Gal” Jamie Thomas, who
also posted a career high ProRally finish of

Club Racing workers honored as
BFGoodrich Tires Workers of the Year.
LEXINGTON, Ohio (September 22, 2002) The
Sports Car Club of America, Inc. honored its
own this week, naming the recipients of the
BFGoodrich Tires Worker of the Year awards
for the 2002 Club Racing season.
As part of the annual Valvoline Runoffs(r)
National Championship event, individuals
were recognized for their excellence in nine
specialties, including: Paddock, Starter, Sound
Control, Timing & Scoring, Registrar, Race
Chair, Grid, Flagging & Communications and
Emergency Services.
“Our volunteer workers are not only what
enables the SCCA to hold events, but they
are paramount in organizing and running professional events nationwide for many different
sanctioning bodies,” said Steve Johnson,
SCCA President and CEO. “Each year, the
SCCA and BFGoodrich Tires salute the best
of the best, and we’re proud to call the
BFGoodrich Worker of the Year award winners a part of our family.”

THE END IS NEAR!
Since I wrote a book last month I will attempt
to make this months article shorter and the end
nearer.
Shortly we will hold elections for many of the
offices on the Region Board. There are two
board members at large up openings along
with the RE, Assistant RE, Secretary and
Treasurer. Some of us have offered to complete another term and others want to be done
with the monthly meetings and other responsibilities the job entails. I have asked the Assistant
Regional Executives for race, rally and solo to
appoint someone from their venue to the nominating committee and they should have a slate
of nominees by the October general membership meeting hosted by the solo 2 group.
Contact your Assistant RE if you are interested.
The region has won the Region of the Year
for six years in row and that is a tough act to follow. We have grown to the size of a jumbo
region and now must compete against the other
JUMBO REGIONS which include Cal Club, San
Francisco and the New England Region. Tough
competition but with the hard work of the
Assistant Regional Executives and their committees along with the other great volunteers, we
may pull off another win. We are the FRIENDLY (PARTY) REGION with active programs in
every venue. We held 134 PARTIES last year
and at least that many this year.
That is
along with a DOUBLE NATIONAL RACE (with
Montana Region), a NATIONAL TOUR SOLO 2
and an FIA INTERNATIONAL ProRally in addition to the complete programs in race, rally and
solo 1 & 2. Thank you to all you who make this
possible!

This year’s edition of the Wild West
International PRORally (and Sou’Wester and
Simpson Stages ClubRallys) presented some
challenges that we hadn’t had to face in the
northwest for some time. First, since this event
would be listed with the FIA as a CNAR
(Championship North America du Rally), the
FIA regulations had to be merged with the
SCCA rules and the NWR supplemental regulations.
Then there were the roads. Most of the
roads available for our use wouldn’t hold up for
multiple runs of the anticipated 80-car field.
That meant there would have to be more
stages than normal to make the required
mileage. Since the late 80s, when we hosted a
round of the world championship here in the
northwest, the ranks of stage captains and
crews had dwindled to four, with most of them
struggling to field sufficient crews. Now here
we were in 2002, thinking about doing seven
individual stages, including the ORV park Super
Special and our signature 24 miler, on Saturday
and another six, including 2 multiple run stages,
on Sunday.
But then the NW (and Oregon) Region volunteers stepped up to the plate. The Oregon
Rally Group agreed to split into two stage
crews, captained by Mike Nagle and Gloria
Hale, for this event. Greg Liukko, long time
worker, decided it was time to field a stage
crew of his own. Diane Duran volunteered to
handle both the ORV super special and the
long stage and with regular stalwarts like Mark
Nolte and the Rainier Auto Sports Club and
Steve McQuaid, suddenly we had seven individual stages on one day with no repeats. But
the question remained: Could we possibly find
enough people to adequately populate the
stage crews as well as the regrouping and
service controls mandated by the FIA rules.

The new version of the NORTHWEST
SPORTS CAR NEWS has been issued twice
and the new format is interesting and much less
expensive to mail. You may or may not have
noticed that the regions mailing address has
changed. THE NEW NW REGION MAILING
ADDRESS IS 1405 HARRISON AVE NW,
SUITE 203, OLYMPIA, WA. 98502. There
were several reasons for the change. The
address is a business address with full time staff
during regular business hours and I donate several hundred square feet to the region for an
office and storage.
This allows the region equipment (race, rally
and solo) to have a common mailing address
along with our corporate licensing. It also gives
Region Newsletter Editor and Assistant, Sherri
Masterson, a place to work on region business
and the newsletter. Finally it eliminates the
problem of someone having to make a trip to a
post office to pick up mail.
The Wild West International ProRally was
held this past weekend and was a great success. This is thanks to the volunteers on the
organizing committee who meet once a week
almost year round and the help of many volunteers. The volunteers included Race Asst RE

Horn. Thanks to Hyundai for the Welcome
Party and Subaru for the fantastic Awards
Banquet at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton.

Finally, do not forget that next year is our
50th Anniversary. Start making plans now to
attend the special banquet and events that will
part of that special year. And if you have an
idea let us know.
and their crews (and John Forespring for providing the training) the regroup and service controls were well handled. And thanks to the
power of advertising and the Internet there
were more than enough volunteers to fill out all
of the stage crews. My only concern was finding the time to respond to all the E-mail messages and get the volunteers distributed to
where they were needed, but hey after all, this
is a rally. Things will work out. They always do
– and once again, they did!
Of course one of the downsides to having
so many individual stages is the number of
stage miles that have to be bannered and
arrowed. Instead of the normal 7 or 8 stages,
this time we had 10 and they stretched from the
far west to Mason Lake and from Eels Hill to
the ORV Park. But once again, the NWR volunteers stepped up and thanks to the efforts of
Steve McQuaid, Mark Nolte, Diane Duran, Jerry
Moon, Bill McArthur and yours truly, all the
roads were fully prepared when needed.
On the day of the event, I seldom get to see
much of the rally. I hit the woods about 0530 to
check out Stages 2 and 3 before heading for
the ORV Park. I understand it rained during the
ORV park stage, but I never saw it because by
that time, I was advancing the rest of the forest
stages. Of course by then I had acquired a
passenger, Julie Douglas from the SCCA
National Office in Denver. Most of the day
passed without incident as I went about
advancing stages.
In one notable instance of serendipity, I had
a bit of chainsaw work remaining on stage 5
and since I had some extra time before I was
due to advance stage 4, I was on stage 5 in
advance of the stage crew. After finishing the
tree trimming, I proceeded through the stage as
the most direct route to SS4. Since SS5 was a
locked stage, I was surprised to find banner
guard down in one place and missing in another. I retied the BG where it was down and
arrange via radio with the stage captain to

Race Report

My horoscope today says, “Strong feelings of
idealism and spiritualism permeate your thoughts
today. You want the world to be a place where
people are decent to each other.” Every now and
them your horoscope is true, because I have
spent a good part of my day thinking about what
I wanted to relate to you in my race report and not
try to sound like I was preaching. It seems like all
of the race magazine editorials I have read this
month, talk about how racecar drivers, race officials and stewards should interact with each
other. The one common theme in all of these articles was something we all learned in kindergarten, “treat everybody the same way you want
to be treated”. If we can all remember this simple
childhood lesson, we all shouldn’t have any problem treating each other with kindness and
respect.
As head of the race program it is my responsibility to keep the race program running smoothly and help resolve any issues that come up.
What I expect of you is to keep me informed of all
issues, and to bring me ideas or suggestions on
how to improve our race program.
With our race season coming to a close we spent
our last race committee meeting reviewing the
past season, overall the race committee was
pleased on how the season went. Granted it was
a short season. Our race seminar and drivers

cover the road with the missing BG. Still, when I
advanced the stage, I wished that I had also
arranged for coverage at the road where I had
retied the BG, so when I found an extra body
with vehicle at the finish, I led them back to that
location. I was later to learn, that while no one
had shown at either location, the Road Marshal I
had placed at the last minute, was there to
move the log kicked sideways across the road
by a rally car, before the next car arrived on the
scene. Serendipity.
On the final stage of this dusty day, the rain
having confined itself to the ORV park, about
five miles from the finish, for the first time in
nearly seventeen years and countless rallys, I
put the advance truck into the ditch – on the
passenger side no less. We thumped pretty
hard but popped right back out again and were
able to continue. Still with that hard of a hit, I
was convinced that I had done some major
sheet metal damage. Fortunately, when I got to
the finish of stage 7, there wasn’t a mark on the
vehicle. Most of the noise had been from the
box with the chainsaw, flipping and spilling its
contents in the bed of the truck. Julie, my pas-
school was the highest attended in years. I want
to thank Jason Fiorito of Pacific Raceways for
being our special guest speaker at the seminar
and Don Kitch and crew from Proformance Race
School for putting on an excellent racecar driver’s
school. This year we also put on two High
Performance Car Control Clinics, which gave
interested people a chance to drive their street
cars on a race track and see if this sport is for
them and to learn how to handle their car in high
speed situations. The first clinic we had eight students and the second clinic we had sixteen students. I want to thank the race officials, stewards,
and racecar drivers who instructed for volunteering their Fridays to make this new program a success.
Our return to Pacific Raceways for our
Double National weekend was also a success.
There were a few hitches in the event and that
was to be expected, so we will take what we
learned from that event and make next year
Double National even better. Again a thank you
to Jason Fiorito and crew for working 24/7 since
the first of the year to make Pacific Raceways a
great racetrack again.
By the time you are reading this we should
know who will qualify for the 25th annual Pacific
Coast Road Race of Champions. We will be
sending out invitations to all of you who qualify.
Congratulation to all of you and I encourage you
to attend, it will be held at Thunderhill Raceway
Park on November 8th-9th and 10th.

The next day the skies opened and twominute intervals would not have been necessary. Unfortunately the cars had already been
started at three and two minute spacing before
the rains arrived, so there was no way to avoid
the stretched out spacing for the 34 cars finishing the rally.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a real rally without
a bit of controversy. In this case it was a bit of
speeding in the service area. Unfortunately the
stewards neglected to follow the rulebook in
assessing the penalty and in the end the entire
thing was dropped, to the consternation of
many. There was also some rudeness on the
part of some drivers and co-drivers toward some
of the stage crews. I understand that this is a
high pressure, big money business for the top
national teams, but mistreating volunteers is
totally unacceptable, and next year will be dealt
with by monetary and time penalties, If I have
my way.
Still and all, it was a great rally. Thanks to
all the volunteers who made the event work.

Reno for the 2002 NORPAC Divisional
Convention January 10th to 12th.

sion and drivetrain – a handful cars would
make repairs and try again on day 2. The
overall winner was Paul Eklund with Co-Driver
Scott Huhn in their Subaru WRX Open class
car. Other class winners included: Andy &
Julie Sharples Production GT, Dave & Rick
Hintz Group5, Nate Tennis/Leon Owens
Group2 and Jamie Thomas/Dave Weiman in
Production.
The Simpson Stages ClubRally had a field
of 25 starting cars – 19 of them finishing the
wet, muddy stages. These stages included the
infamous “massive downhill” stage (I swear
you can see Canada on your way down….)
and a few uphill sections were tossed into the
mix as well! It was muddy, slippy – yet the
spectators were still out in force - rain-soaked
and cheering with all they had to give.
Although the stages were shorter than the previous day many teams found themselves challenged – right up until the last stage of the
rally! Bob Trinder and Bill Westhead lost a few
wheel studs and the whole wheel itself – all
this within miles of the finish! Also on the final
stage of the weekend, my teammate (Dave
Weiman) and I took a 90-Left-into-Deer!! We
didn’t hit her as she bolted immediately –
directly in our path, continuing up the stage
with us on the horn right behind her. We all
know deer and rally cars simply don’t mix, but
they make for an exciting stage, that’s for sure!
Overall rally winner was once again the team
of Eklund/Huhn - rain or shine, they were not
going to be beaten on this weekend! The
other class winners of day 2 were: Dave &
Rick Hintz Group5, Todd Hartman/Shawn
Callahan Group2, Greg Lingelbach/Steve
Andrews Production GT and Jamie
Thomas/Dave Weiman in Production. See the

When all was said and done, the weekend was
viewed as a great success as the rallies went
off without delays or complications. Huge
“Thank You’s” and kudos go out to all of the
workers and organizers who spent countless
hours putting the event together for all to enjoy
– you are appreciated!!

September is upon us and that means its
once again Wild West time!! The
Sou’Wester and Simpson Stages
Club Rallies were run in conjunction
with the Wild West International Pro
Rally. These Club rallies saw over
36 Club Rally competitors come out
to test their skills against the rough
and rocky Simpson Timber roads.
The Sou’Wester rally was run under
sunny skies – which created brutal
dust and inadvertently affected many
of the competitors, even with 2minute start windows. The Simpson
Stages rally held on Sunday was the
complete opposite as the skies
