ENDORSED BY:
INVITATION
Dr. Giorgio Boncoraglio
is a clinical neurologist working at
Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico
Carlo Besta in Milan, and has been active
in the ISGC since 2009.
Dr. Myriam Fornage
holds a joint appointment at the
University of Texas Health School of
Public Health and will host the next
ISGC 10th anniversary workshop in
Houston in spring 2017
We are pleased to invite everyone to participate in the
20th Workshop of the International stroke Genetics
Consortium, that will be hosted by Dr. Giorgio
Boncoraglio at the palazzo delle stelline in Milan on 34 November 2016.
the palazzo delle stelline, a 17th-century ex-convent in
the city center, sits opposite the santa Maria delle
Grazie church, whose refectory is home to Leonardo's
“the Last supper”.
the International stroke Genetics Consortium (IsGC)
is an international collaboration of stroke physicians
and scientists who have agreed to pool resources and
expertise in an effort to unravel the genetic basis of
stroke (http://www.strokegenetics.org). As such,
members pursue their own research as well as come
together under the IsGC banner to conduct larger,
collaborative studies. papers resulting from such
studies, with the IsGC as an author, have been
published in The New England Journal of Medicine,
Nature Genetics, and Lancet Neurology.

the IsGC was formed in 2007 by a small group of
scientists and has since grown to over 200 members
representing over 50 countries. the success of this
initiative is in its collaborative nature, which is best
expressed during the workshops where, twice a year,
IsGC scientists meet to share their ideas and results.
But we have also time for fun and relationship building
during our social events!
please register! see the information below for details
of the workshop and social activities and how to
register.

Guided Visit to Leonardo's “The Last Supper”
Leonardo painted the Last supper in the refectory of
the convent of santa Maria delle Grazie as
commissioned by Ludovico sforza, the Duke of Milan,
between 1494 and 1497. he painted on a dry wall instead
of on wet plaster, the traditional and resistant technique
for a fresco which requires working quickly without
making changes. Instead, Leonardo experimented with
an innovative method in order to allow time to paint in
his detailed, chiaroscuro style. Unfortunately, the
experiment was not entirely successful. Due to a number
of causes, the painting soon began to deteriorate. over
the centuries there have been many restorations in
desperate attempts to save this priceless work of art.
the last restoration took over 20 years to complete. In
1999 the Last supper returned to display in the form as
we can see it today, close to the original intentions of
Leonardo. the complex of the Dominican church and
convent of santa Maria delle Grazie along with the Last
supper by Leonardo da Vinci, one of the world's most
famous paintings, are all great works of art.
the complex was added to the list of Unesco World
heritage sites in 1980.
DURATION: the visit rotation lasts 15 minutes for a
maximum number of 30 people at a time.
NB: the visit must reach the minimum number of
participants
