We had our NC Self Advocate Conference on March 28 th. The conference was co-hosted by The
Arc of Greensboro, High Point, Davidson County and Enrichment Center of Winston-Salem. It
was a huge success with over 160 attendees. It was titled ‘My Dreams, My Life’. Topics ranged from
Healthy Relationships, Staying Safe, Legal Aid, Independence through Technology and Home
Ownership. Self advocates from all around the state came together to learn, share and have fun.
The conference ended with dinner and dancing. Great times!

PROJECT SEARCH NEWS
Project SEARCH is an international business-led collaboration that enables young adults with
Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) to gain and maintain employment through
training and career exploration. The cornerstone of Project SEARCH is total
immersion in a large business. Students learn transferrable job skills through class time and
internships within a business during their senior year of high school. Project

community and workplace.
The Project SEARCH class of 2015 has learned marketable job skills in many different areas. The interns have
worked in housekeeping, landscaping, business office, dietary, laundry, nursing, preschool and a massage business. The students have worked both in and ouside the host business. Students are eligible for employment at
any point during their year at Project SEARCH. We are excited to announce that 5 of 7 interns have already
been hired! Project SEARCH at Guilford is a collaboration between The Arc of Greensboro, Friends Homes,
Sandhills Center, Vocational Rehabilitation and Guilford County Schools.

Using Silver, Brass & Gems learn how to create
necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings
$10 fee per class
(students will keep one item per session)

We are excited about this new class series being offered by Kathryn Banks of KDI
Group, Custom Jewelry. The photo displays all the jewelry items students make by
hand. These classes are held at the KDI office and at the completion of each session
each student will select one item to take home. A jewelry show and sale is held each
month and students, their families and friends invited to attend. All other items will be
offered for sale through The Arc. Materials include Cabochon gems, silver plated and
gun metal brass. All materials and instruction provided by KDI jewelers. Sign up is in
advance by the month. Registration fee due with completed registration

Greensboro area. Creators may take home one item at the end of
every registered month. We will also encourage creators to sign-up for
events to sell their creations, promote RemArcable Community, and
educate the public about The Arc of Greensboro and how amazing
individuals with ID/DD are! Let’s get busy folks!

2015 Awards Nomination Form
The Arc of Greensboro has an annual opportunity to acknowledge outstanding contributions made by individuals or groups on
behalf of children and adults with intellectual and related developmental delays. The categories of awards listed below are definitive of persons or groups who have enhanced the quality of life, services and programs for individuals with intellectual and
related developmental delays. The Arc Awards Committee will review each nomination very carefully. The Arc award winners
will also be nominated on the state level. The Arc/NC award winners will in turn be nominated for national recognition.
Please review each award category carefully and submit, using the nomination form your choice for a candidate(s). Please
feel free to submit more than one nomination.
The Arc Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 6:00 p.m.
at The St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church, 2715 Horse Pen Creek Road, Greensboro, NC 27410
The Marina Wilder Award for Distinguished Service - To honor an individual or organization that has contributed, in a
distinguished manner, to the promotion of rights of and/or services to North Carolina citizens with developmental disabilities.
Employer of the Year - To recognize employers having exceptional records of providing inclusive competitive employment
opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.
Teacher of the Year - To recognize a classroom teacher (special or general ed) who has demonstrated excellence in teaching
students with develop-mental disabilities, working in or toward more inclusive education.
Volunteer of the Year - To recognize a volunteer who has given generously of time and talents to accomplish the mission of
The Arc.
Ruth Edwards Award, Direct Care Professional – To recognize extraordinary commitment by an individual employed to provide
direct support, service, or care to a person/people with developmental disabilities. Honoring a person whose support fosters growth,
independence, community inclusion and dignity.
Consumer of the Year Award – To honor an individual with intellectual and related developmental delays who is an achieving
integrated member of his or her community.
Victor Hall Leadership Award -To recognize leaders in the self-advocacy arena, The Arc of Greensboro is requesting nominations
of outstanding leaders in the self-advocacy field. We are looking for people who are actively advocating, organizing, collaborating
and/or working to increase the voice and power of people with disabilities.

MEMORIAL AND HONOR GIFT PROGRAM
A contribution to The Arc of Greensboro in honor of a loved one is a wonderful way to remember them and
help sustain our mission to assisting individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. This
program can be used throughout the year by recognizing births, special anniversaries, birthdays or special
holidays. We will also be glad to send cards for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter and Passover! For each
donation a special note will be sent to the designated family member or friend stating the name of the donor.
