BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS:
BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICS: Setting the Standard of Excellence A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A new Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and new locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout. The Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 11 times in the 15-year history of the affiliation, including seven straight titles from 1998-2004. Bucknell finished second in the overall Cup standings in 2004-05 and tied for the women’s all-sports title. It was the eighth straight year, and 11th time overall, that the Bison captured the women’s title. In 2004-05, Bucknell won titles in men’s basketball, women’s swimming & diving and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field. Bucknell has won 11 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 15 years BUCKNELL RANKS FOURTH IN THE NATION (TO NEBRASKA, NOTRE DAME AND PENN STATE) IN TOTAL NUMBER OF ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALLAMERICA SELECTIONS. A TOTAL OF 110 BISON STUDENT ATHLETES HAVE RE- CEIVED NATIONAL ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA RECOGNITION SINCE 1970. Bucknell Student-Athletes Among Nation’s Best Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. • Bucknell LED THE NATION in graduation rates in the 2003 survey conducted by the NCAA and the U.S. Department of Education. Bucknell graduated 100% of the student-athletes who entered school in 1996. It was the third time Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates, and the Bison have never finished out of the top 10. • Bucknell claimed its 100th Patriot League ScholarAthlete of the Year in the spring of 2005. That is more than twice the next-highest total. • Bucknell student-athletes comprised nearly onefourth of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2004-05. A total of 301 Bison recorded a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 227 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2005. • Twenty-two of Bucknell’s 26 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2005, including all 14 women’s programs. • In addition to the 110 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 213 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including nine last year. • With four more Patriot League championships in 2004-05, Bucknell has now earned 50 crowns in 15 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 68 conference players of the year, 65 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 391 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf. • Bucknell’s men’s basketball team made history in 2005, writing national headlines with a stirring 64-63 upset of Kansas at the NCAA Tournament. It was the first NCAA men’s basketball win in school and Patriot League history. The victory earned Bucknell an ESPY Award in the “Best Upset” category. 11 PATRIOT LEAGUE PRESIDENTS’ CUPS 110 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS 2006 ROSTER No. Name 1 Matt Castele 2 ** Paul Stansik 3 * Mark Lane 4 John Togneri 5 *** Matt Baran 6 *** Michael Abou Jaoude 7 * Steven Cheng 8 * Austin Sanders 9 Matt Antonelli 10 ** Brian Gargan 11 * Andrew Goodhand 12 * Rick Carolan 13 * John Schlicher 14 * Tommy Moore 15 ** Kirk Klett 16 Billy Haire 17 Perry Menzies 18 ** Greg Sowyrda 19 *** Patrick Lenhart 20 * Nick Marks 21 Doug Buckley 22 ** Steve Case 23 Tom Izard 24 * Patrick Krause 25 Michael Cooke 28 *** Chris Carillo 30 * Patrick Keeney 31 * Evan Burns 32 Joe Mele 33 * Tommy Orr 34 Will Pickel 35 ** Danylko Kulczycky 41 Scott Collins 42 Alex Simoes 44 Mike Thon * letters earned Cl. Of the 300 full- and 33 part-time faculty, nearly 95 percent hold doctoral degrees. The 100th college chartered in the U.S., Bucknell was founded by Philadelphia Baptists in 1846 as the University at Lewisburg. The first class of seven men graduated in 1851. The first woman received her degree in 1885. The institution was renamed Bucknell University in 1886 in honor of William Bucknell, trustee and benefactor. A comprehensive university, students choose from many academic options, including 53 majors and 64 minors. Students have the opportunity to conduct research in collaboration with experienced faculty as well as access to state-of-the-art library, laboratory, computer, and recreational facilities. The student-faculty ratio is 11 to 1. Through the International Focus Semester and Study Abroad programs and interaction with students and faculty from more 50 foreign countries, students make global connections. The university is committed to diversity and a community of acceptance. Located on a 450-acre campus overlooking the Susquehanna River, the university’s physical plant includes more than 100 facilities. Recent additions include the Sigfried Weis Music Building, McDonnell Hall, the O’Leary Psychology and Geology Center, the Kenneth Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, and the Breakiron Engineering Building. Bucknell is accessible by car on U.S. Route 15, seven miles south of Interstate 80. The campus is 60 miles north of Harrisburg and 25 miles south of Williamsport. Campus tours are offered by the Office of Admissions from the lobby of Freas Hall. Virtual tours are available at www.bucknell. edu . PERENNIAL LEADER IN GRADUATION RATES THE KENNETH G. LANGONE ATHLETICS & RECREATION CENTER The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 11 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 15 years, annual top-10 national rankings in graduation rates, 110 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans in 34 years and 100 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 15 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation facilities of its kind in the nation, will help ensure the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity athletics programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center, which includes the Berger Family Weight Room. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The building was formally dedicated on Apr. 25, 2003, in honor of noted entrepreneur and philanthropist Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The brand new construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison volleyball team, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. CHRISTY MATHEWSON-MEMORIAL STADIUM: THE HOME OF BISON LACROSSE Bucknell plays its home games in a picturesque, 81-year-old stadium whose name pays tribute to one of its most distinguished alumni and to its numerous war veterans. The stadium was dedicated in 1924 and renovated in 1989, at which time it was renamed in honor of Christy Mathewson, a threesport athlete at Bucknell at the turn of the century. The Bison lacrosse team began playing in the facility in 2002, just after a new FieldTurf playing surface was installed. The venue also features a recently resurfaced all-weather eight-lane track, and it received a new lighting system in 2004. 3 2006 SEASON PREVIEW 11 PATRIOT LEAGUE PRESIDENTS’ CUPS 110 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS CHANGES IN STORE FOR BISON LAX IN 2006, BUT TITLE HOPES REMAIN THE SAME 4 goals. He scored 12 goals and was second to Cara on the squad with 16 assists. Marks, who has a cannon of a shot, came on strong late last season and finished with eight goals. Sophomores John Schlicher and Rick Carolan are both improved middies and will be pushed by an outstanding rookie class. Freshman Doug Buckley was very impressive in the fall and Fedorjaka feels he could be playing with the first midfield line by opening day. Perry Menzies, Alex Simoes and Mike Thon also figure to contribute immediately. At the faceoff X sophomore Austin Sanders is the top candidate to replace All-Patriot Leaguer Ryan Goodman. Goodman handled the bulk of Bucknell’s draws over the last three years, but last season Sanders actually posted a better percentage (.532). Thon is also an excellent faceoff man and will compete with Sanders at that critical position. “Neutralizing the faceoff X can’t be a major issue for us,” says Fedorjaka. “We have two guys who we think can do that, and we should have better wing play this year.” The Bison defense will be a mix of the old and the new this spring. The backbone of the defense will be senior Michael Abou Jaoude, a First Team All-Patriot League defenseman, and senior goalie Matt Baran, a Second Team AllPatriot League pick. Abou Jaoude is one of the Patriot League’s elite cover men, a big, physical defender who will almost always mark the opposition’s best attackman. Baran ranked among the national leaders in both save percentage (.588) and goals-against average (8.06) while posting an 8-5 record a year ago. He has developed into a very consistent backstop while maintaining his flair for making the spectacular save. Baran is also one of the fastest players on the team and is very adept in the clearing game. Baran will be backed up by freshman Matt Antonelli, a promising and capable replacement if needed. While senior Chris Carillo will be lost for the season after having heart surgery in February, junior Greg Sowyrda and sophomore Evan Burns both have starting experience along with Abou Jaoude on close defense. Factor in sophomore Patrick Krause and promising freshmen Scott Collins and Tom Izard, and this should be one of the team’s deepest positions. Both of last year’s top long-stick defensive midfielders return in junior Paul Stansik and sophomore Tommy Orr, and both are potential all-conference players who bring excellent size, takeaway skills and stickhandling ability. The short-stick d-middie area is a concern, as Bucknell graduated four outstanding players in Goodman, Daryl Seymour, T.J. Wallace and John Salvesen. Fortunately, the team’s depth in the offensive midfield and at close defense has allowed Fedorjaka to shift some veterans over. Most notable is sophomore Mark Lane, who earned a starting middie spot as a freshman last year. While Lane has the speed and craftiness of an offensive player, he is also a big hitter who possesses excellent cover skills. Senior Patrick Lenhart, a co-captain along with Abou Jaoude and Baran, also moves from the offensive end Matt Baran will be in his third year as Bucknell’s starting goalie in 2006. to defensive midfield. Junior Danylko Kulczycky will put away the long pole and play with a short stick this spring, while sophomore Patrick Keeney is also vying for playing time. Freshmen Billy Haire, who can play any of the defensive positions, and Michael Cooke are also capable of contributing right away at SSDM. “It all starts with the defense,” notes Fedorjaka. “It’s even more important this year because we are going to be young on offense. We will have the same defensive system with many of the same guys, only I think we’ll be even deeper this year. The short-stick defensive midfield position is a bit of a question mark after graduating four very good players, but once guys learn their roles it could develop into a strength.” The “new-look” Bison will be tested early against a very difficult schedule. Bucknell opens the season on Feb. 25 against former Patriot League rival Hobart. Following non-conference games against Mount St. Mary’s and Butler, the Bison travel to San Diego for a First 4 showdown with defending Patriot League champion Navy on March 11. The Midshipmen will have revenge on their minds, as Bucknell knocked off secondranked Navy in Lewisburg last season in one of the biggest victories in school history. The game will be televised live on CSTV. “The Navy game is a great opportunity for us,” Fedorjaka says. “To play a program like Navy in California on national television, it is just great for Bucknell. The guys are really excited about it, and I think we’ll go out there and play very loose.” The Bison return home from California and immediately face a date with another national power in Maryland in College Park. Another western trip looms in mid-April, when Bucknell travels to Air Force and Denver for two games in three days. Other non-conference foes include Penn and Penn State. • Continued on p. 12 2006 BUCKNELL MEN’S LACROSSE WWW.BUCKNELLBISON.COM The theme for the 2006 Bucknell men’s lacrosse team could be summed up in a Bob Dylan tune, for the times they are a-changin’. For the first time in the history of the program the Bison have undergone a coaching change, and on the field they will have to replace an AllAmerican who led the nation in scoring in each of the last two years, their entire short-stick defensive middie rotation and the player who took about 90 percent of the team’s faceoffs over the last two years. Sounds like a daunting task, but ask new head coach Frank Fedorjaka about the upcoming season and he will quote another Dylan title: “I Can’t Wait.” “We know we graduated an outstanding senior class,” says Fedorjaka, who was an assistant coach under the legendary Sid Jamieson for the last seven years and was named his successor shortly after Jamieson announced his retirement prior to last season, “but we also see it as a tremendous opportunity for our younger talent to step in. This program has competed at a championship level for many years, and I have no question that we have the ability to compete for a Patriot League title this year. We are placing a lot of emphasis on chemistry and team building, and as we head into the season the team chemistry is outstanding. I am so excited to coach this team. We just seem to get better every day.” The highest-profile loss is the school’s alltime leading scorer, Chris Cara. A Third Team All-American, Cara tallied a whopping 249 career points, including a national-best 78 in 2004 and 66 last spring. While the Bison likely won’t have an individual post those kinds of eye-popping numbers, two veteran attackmen return, as well as what should be a deeper and more experienced midfield unit. Junior Brian Gargan is expected to take over Cara’s role as the primary ballcarrying attack. One of the program’s most improved players since coming in as a walk-on, Gargan pocketed 13 goals last season playing both attack and midfield. Another junior, Kirk Klett, is an outstanding crease attackman who tied Cara and the graduated Patrick Christensen for the team goalscoring lead with 29 last season. Klett is hardly a one-dimensional finisher, however. He can also play up top or at the X, and he will be asked to move around and become a playmaker. Freshman Joe Mele made a wonderful first impression during the fall season and is a leading contender for the third attack spot. Another freshman, John Togneri, is also a potential impact player, and Fairfield transfer Matt Castele will also contend for playing time. “We won’t be as predictable this year,” says Fedorjaka. “We should be much more balanced offensively. We can dodge from all different areas with all different players. Our first two midfield lines are very good, which should allow us to be more midfield-oriented than in past years. Last year we almost always attacked from behind the goal with Chris Cara. Now we will need to be more balanced.” Junior Steve Case and sophomore Nick Marks are sure to be part of the starting midfield unit. Case had a breakthrough sophomore season, when he scored or set up a number of big MEET THE BISON PERENNIAL LEADER IN GRADUATION RATES 50 PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS MICHAEL ABOU JAOUDE • 6 SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. 6-0 • 204 • SENIOR DEFENSE • CAPTAIN In 2005: Enjoyed best season to date and became one of the league’s top cover defensemen ... He retired ranked 10th among all coaches with 242 career victories, and he led his Bison teams to seven championships in three different conferences, including four straight Patriot League titles from 2000 to 2003. He was named the USILA National Coach of the Year in 1996 after directing Bucknell to a perfect 12-0 season, and he led the Bison to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2001. In addition to the tremendous on-field success, Jamieson was extremely active in on-campus issues throughout his four-decade tenure at Bucknell. He won the prestigious Burma-Bucknell Bowl, given for “outstanding contributions to intercultural and international understanding.” He was also a dynamic force on the international lacrosse scene through his involvement with the Iroquois National Team, and he has served as an avid spokesman for the Native American influence on the sport. From 1983-86 Jamieson served as head coach of the Iroquois Nationals and led the team to the 1984 World Lacrosse Games. He took the team to the World Lacrosse Championships in Perth, Australia, in 1990 while serving as the team’s executive director. Many of lacrosse’s most prominent honors have been bestowed upon him. He won the highly esteemed Gen. George M. Gelston Award in 1985, as the person who most represents the symbol of the game of lacrosse. He received the Howdy Myers Memorial Award as college lacrosse’s “Man of the Year” in 1986 and 1996, and in 2005 was presented the Spirit of Tewaaraton Award. More important than all of the honors and awards Jamieson received throughout his hallof-fame career is the number of lives he has touched at Bucknell, from campus faculty and fellow athletic department coaches and staffers to the thousands of student-athletes who have passed through his lacrosse program. 2006 BUCKNELL MEN’S LACROSSE WWW.BUCKNELLBISON.COM Steve Case MEET THE BISON MEET THE BISON PERENNIAL LEADER IN GRADUATION RATES PAUL STANSIK • 2 CAZENOVIA, N.Y. 6-3 • 217 • JUNIOR MIDFIELD ANN ARBOR, MICH. 6-4 • 195 • JUNIOR LSDM In 2005: Lone game appearance came against Lafayette ... A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning routines for each of Bucknell’s programs. The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams will employ explosion techniques with power bands and pliometrics. The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition (as opposed to training bodybuilders). A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse teams for three seasons. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Council of Strength and Fitness. CHRIS CARA ETCHES MARK AS ONE OF BUCKNELL’S ALL-TIME GREATS When Chris Cara departed Lewisburg following graduation last May, he likely needed an extra vehicle to cart away all of his honors and records achieved during a brilliant fouryear lacrosse career at Bucknell. In 2005, Cara was selected as one of 16 nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy, which is given each year to the most outstanding college lacrosse player. The highly skilled attackman was also selected as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. Cara led the nation in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons. In 2005 he tallied 66 points on 29 goals and 37 assists in 2005. He piled up 78 points (38G, 40A) in 2004, setting the school single-season assist record and falling one point shy of the overall scoring record. Cara and Bucknell Hall of Famer Pete von Hoffmann are the only players in school history to produce four 30-assist seasons. It was von Hoffmann’s 26-year-old career scoring record that Cara squashed midway through his final season. Cara finished with a whopping 249 career points, including 138 assists, a total that tied von Hoffmann’s Bison record. Against Penn State last season Cara broke the Patriot League career scoring record of 238 points by Army’s Tim Pearson from 1999-2002. Cara also ranks in the top-20 on the NCAA’s career points and assists chart. An Honorable Mention All-America selection in 2004, Cara earned Third Team All-America plaudits in 2005, becoming the first Bison to earn All-America recognition above the honorable mention level since von Hoffmann in 1979. Cara won the Christy Mathewson Award as the top senior athlete, and he helped Bucknell to a 19-6 Patriot League record during his career. A strong and durable player who never missed a start in his career, Cara was named the MVP of the North-South All-Star Game and was selected in the third round of the Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the Long Island Lizards. 11 110 ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICANS 11 PATRIOT LEAGUE PRESIDENTS’ CUPS FRANK FEDORJAKA PAT MYERS HEAD COACH 1ST SEASON ASSISTANT COACH 1ST SEASON New Bucknell head coach Frank Fedorjaka has tabbed former Ohio State star Pat Myers as assistant coach. Myers, who currently plays midfield for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse, was an assistant coach at Cornell last season and helped lead the Big Red to an 11-3 record, an Ivy League championship and the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. At Bucknell Myers will serve as offensive coordinator and coach the EMO unit. Off the field he will be the program’s chief liaison in several important areas, including roles as recruiting coordinator, academic monitor and strength and conditioning supervisor. “I am extremely excited to have Pat on board,” said Fedorjaka. “His expertise on the offensive side of the ball in relation to individual player development and team offense should pay immediate dividends. He comes in with lots of fresh ideas, and he has played lacrosse at the highest level. Not only is he the son of a coach, but he has been an assistant at two national-caliber programs under very well respected head coaches in Ohio State’s Joe Breschi and Cornell’s Jeff Tambroni. Pat brings us a tremendous amount of energy and passion for teaching the game, and he was an outstanding student himself at Ohio State, so he understands and respects the scholar-athlete model that is so vital to Bucknell’s mission.” At Cornell Myers worked with an offense that ranked fifth nationally in scoring at 11.8 goals per game. At one point this past season the Big Red were ranked third in the national polls, their highest listing since 1987. Myers assisted in all facets of practice planning, scouting, game plan development and recruiting. He also coordinated a position-specific lacrosse clinic for players in Upstate New York. A 2003 graduate of Ohio State, Myers was a four-year letterman on the Buckeyes lacrosse team. He was the Great Western Lacrosse League Rookie of the Year in 2000 and was an all-conference selection in 2002 and 2003. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, Myers played in the 2003 North-South All-Star Game and he ended his Buckeye career with 61 goals, 28 assists and 89 points. Myers was selected in the 2004 MLL Supplemental Draft and made his pro debut on May 22, 2004 against the Baltimore Bayhawks. Myers is entering his third season with the Boston Cannons. After graduation Myers served as a volunteer assistant under head coach Breschi at Ohio State, helping the 2004 Buckeyes earn their highest ranking in school history (sixth). The squad posted an overall record of 12-4 and finished it’s a perfect 5-0 in the GWLL to claim the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. A native of Kennebunk, Maine, Myers was a two-time prep All-American at Kennebunk High School. He later coached the Maine U-19 Select All-Star Team. • SEASON PREVIEW, from p. 4 In addition to the Navy game in San Diego, another Patriot League tilt to circle on the schedule is the Apr. 7 home game with Army. The Bison and Black Knights have engaged in some classics in recent years, and the Orange and Blue will look to return the favor after suffering not one but two excruciating one-goal losses to Army last season. The Cadets won the regular-season meeting 7-6 on a goal with 20 seconds remaining in regulation, then they captured a 9-8 overtime decision in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. “We try to put together a non-conference schedule that will help prepare us for the Patriot League Tournament,” says Fedorjaka, who will be assisted this year by former Ohio State All-American Pat Myers. “Teams like Hobart, Maryland, Penn and Penn State are all tremendous programs, and we are looking forward to playing two rapidly improving teams in Air Force and Denver in a Friday-Sunday trip, which simulates our league tournament format.” If the Bison can successfully wade through that challenging schedule, Fedorjaka will be whistling a happy tune next May. 2006 BUCKNELL MEN’S LACROSSE WWW.BUCKNELLBISON.COM Veteran Bucknell coach Frank Fedorjaka has shedded the “assistant” tag in 2006, taking over the head coaching duties of a program in which he has played a major role over the last decade. Prior to the 2005 season, the seventh season of his second stint as an assistant coach with the Bison, director of athletics John Hardt announced that Fedorjaka would succeed the retiring Sid Jamieson as head coach. Fedorjaka becomes only the second head coach in Bucknell lacrosse history, following in the footsteps of Jamieson, Bucknell Hall of Famer who founded the varsity lacrosse program in 1968. Fedorjaka, who was named associate head coach prior to the 2004 season, rejoined the Bucknell lacrosse family after serving as head coach at Franklin & Marshall for five years. Fedorjaka served as an assistant coach at Bucknell for the 1992 and 1993 seasons before going to F&M. In Fedorjaka’s five seasons at F&M, the Diplomats compiled a 39-31 record. His 39 wins placed him in second on the school’s all-time lacrosse win’s list. In 1995 Fedorjaka was named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s Division III Coach of the Year, after leading the Diplomats to a 12-3 record and an NCAA playoff berth. In addition to his responsibilities as men’s lacrosse coach, Fedorjaka also served as an assistant coach in football and women’s soccer during his tenure at F&M. Also while at F&M Fedorjaka served as the Chair to the Southern ECAC Lacrosse Committee in 1997 and 1998. He served on the USILA National Ranking Committee and NCAA Advisory Committee for Division III lacrosse. As an assistant coach at Bucknell, Fedorjaka’s primary responsibilities included coordinating the team’s national recruiting effort, overseeing the strength and conditioning program as well as serving as academic monitor and defensive coordinator. In 2000, the Bison defense finished No. 2 in the nation in goals against and No. 1 in the nation for man down defense, and they were among the nation’s best again in 2003, ranking fourth and second. Under Fedorjaka’s direction Bucknell ranked in the top 20 nationally in scoring defense in each of the last seven years, and in man-down defense in six of the last seven. During his second stint as an assistant at Bucknell, the Bison posted a 54-38 overall record, a 33-8 Patriot League record and they have been nationally ranked in 6 of 7 years. Fedorjaka served as an assistant coach under Jamieson in his first stint with the Bison program, working primarily with the defense and weight-training, while also assisting in recruiting. Fedorjaka was also active in the Academic Enhancement Program, which monitors the academic progress of Bucknell’s student-athletes. A 1989 graduate of Hobart College, Fedorjaka was a starting longstick midfielder on three NCAA Division III national championship teams. He was also a three-year starter at wide receiver for the Statesman football team, earning All-America honors in 1988. The Rochester, N.Y., native was named Hobart’s Athlete of the Year in 1989. During his career at Hobart, he held all reception records and remained the school’s all-time leading receiver until 2004. Fedorjaka began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for two years at Springfield College (Mass.). Fedorjaka and his wife, Kathy, who is Bucknell’s head women’s basketball coach, live in Winfield, Pa., with their eight-year-old son Matthew and four-year-old daughter Jamie. 12 BUCKNELL COACHING STAFF THE RECORD BOOK PERENNIAL LEADER IN GRADUATION RATES Year 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 1999 1998 1997 1996 1995 1994 1993 1992 1991 1990 1989 1988 1987 1986 1985 Overall Rec. 8-5 6-8 9-4 6-7 10-4 8-4 7-6 6-8 3-10 12-0 7-6 6-7 6-9 7-6 6-7 5-9 7-7 4-10 7-7 4-7 8-5 Conf. The Bison made their first-ever NCAA appearance in 2001, facing Notre Dame in the opening round at West Point’s Michie Stadium. Despite a competitive 12-7 loss, Bucknell has firmly entrenched itself on the national lacrosse landscape, routinely achieving top-20 national rankings in recent years. Perhaps no season has defined the level at which the program has soared more than the 1996 season. In 1996 the Bison went 12-0, winning the Patriot League title and sweeping every league postseason honor. That year Bucknell finished ninth in the national coaches’ poll as well as ranking in the top 20 nationally in eight statistical categories. Despite such success, Bucknell was not invited to participate in the 1996 NCAA Tournament. However the immense support shown for the program by the fans, alumni and those involved directly in Bucknell athletics, was proof to the NCAA that Patriot League lacrosse deserved to be recognized. As a result, the NCAA awarded an automatic bid to the national tournament to the Patriot League champion, and the Bison claimed that bid in 2001 by going a perfect 6-0 in league play. Bucknell has claimed eight conference championships in the three conferences it has been a part of, the Mid-Atlantic Conference, the East Coast Conference and the Patriot League. The Bison are 30-6 in Patriot League play over the last six years and captured the conference crown either outright or as co-champions each year from 2000-03. In 2005, Bucknell shared the regular-season title before falling to Army in overtime in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals. One of Bucknell’s eight wins last season was an 8-7 overtime decision over second-ranked Navy. It was the highest-ranked team the Bison have ever beaten. Bucknell annually plays a schedule that includes top-10 and top-20 teams. Five of the Herd’s 2005 opponents are ranked in the preseason top-25 — No. 4 Maryland, No. 7 Navy, No. 13 Penn State, No. 15 Army and No. 22 Denver. Five others (Colgate, Lehigh, Penn, Hobart and Air Force) received votes in the preseason poll. Bucknell, which finished last season ranked 14th, is listed 25th in the 2005 preseason poll. In 2002 the Bison made 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium their permanent home, giving them one of the finest lax facilities in the nation. Wallace BISON LACROSSE PERENNIAL LEADER IN GRADUATION RATES 50 PATRIOT LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS WWW.BUCKNELLBISON.COM ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting studentathletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA. The department is proud that so many of today’s exemplary Bison scholarathletes will be tomorrow’s outstanding leaders. 2006 BUCKNELL MEN’S LACROSSE v 2006 BISON LACROSSE TEAM CAMP When: June 22-25, 2006 Where: On the campus of Bucknell University Cost: $450 for Resident Campers; $300 for Day Campers Camp Director: Frank Fedorjaka Camp Co-Director: Pat Myers The Bison Team Camp provides an opportunity to showcase individual ability while playing with members of one’s own high school and/or club program. Individuals attending without a team will be assigned to an independent team prior to registration. All prospects are encouraged to attend. Teams should consist of a minimum of 18 players, including a goalie. Each player is required to bring both turf shoes and cleats. Teams are afforded one practice session and one game on the opening day of camp, followed by a three-game schedule each day thereafter. The games are 30-minute running time halves, including a five-minute halftime. Additional practice time may be available on request. The top eight teams will be seeded for a tournament-style playoff format on the final day of camp. The Bison Team Camp is held on Bucknell University’s 300-acre campus in the heart of the beautiful Susquehanna River Valley in Lewisburg, Pa. Bucknell’s campus is located adjacent to Rt. 15, just six miles south of I-80 and 55 miles north of Harrisburg, Pa. Campers compete in the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. With its recently-installed FieldTurf, it is one of the finest venues in all of college lacrosse. The Bison Team Camp also utilizes the newly renovated West Fields complex, which also offers a first-class atmosphere for lacrosse at any level. The Bison Team Camp provides state-of-the-art facilities and accommodations for a competitive lacrosse atmosphere. All teams will have a chance to work on team concepts and various aspects of team play as the week progresses. Camp staff and referees help provide the most realistic, game-like experience possible. This is a unique chance to grow and learn as a team while continuing to develop all the important individual skills necessary to play at the college level.
