OVERWINTERING HYDRANGEAS
Bigleaf hydrangeas carry their flower buds overwinter to bloom the next summer.
Cold winters, sudden freezes or late spring frosts can all affect flowering. If your
hydrangeas do not bloom reliably, try protecting them overwinter. Leaves are a
good insulator; secure them for the winter with chicken wire. Snow is also good
protection, so leave those drifts of snow to cover your plants.

FLOWER COLOR
Bigleaf hydrangea flower color will be affected by soil pH. It is not the pH itself
that changes the color, but the availability of aluminum ions. Aluminum is more
available in acid soils, so the flowers turn blue. In basic (alkaline) soil, the
aluminum is tied up and flowers will be pink. The degree of color change depends
on the amount of aluminum available, and the variety. Aluminum sulfate can be
applied to get blue flowers, while applying horticultural lime will encourage the
development of pink blooms.

PRUNING HYDRANGEAS
This is one of the most commonly asked
gardening questions. But before it can be
answered, you must know what type of
hydrangea you have. Bigleaf hydrangeas
(Hydrangea macrophylla) usually do
not need any pruning. They set their
flower buds on ‘old wood’ – the previous
season’s growth – so cutting them back
in fall or spring will keep them from
flowering. If you must trim them, do so
immediately after flowering.
Hardy hydrangeas (H. paniculata) and
Smoothleaf hydrangeas (H. arborescens)
bloom on ‘new wood’ – the current
season’s growth. They should be cut back
in late winter or early spring to encourage
the new growth which produces flowers.
Cutting them back will also help them
to develop a full, sturdy habit.
Bracted hydrangeas (H. involucrate)
blooms on new wood, too. They may be
trimmed in late winter or early spring.

CUTTING AND DRYING HYDRANGEAS
Many gardeners like to enjoy their
hydrangeas year-round by cutting and
drying them for arrangements. This is easy
to do. First, cut the flowers when they are
slightly past their peak. Next, place them
in a vase and allow them to dry while in
water. Drying them in water helps them to
hold their shape and color as they dry.

COLD HARDINESS MAP
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
IN THE ZONE
Will the plant you buy this year come back next year? It depends on
where you live. To survive year after year, a plant must be able to tolerate
year-round conditions in your area, such as the lowest and highest
temperatures and the amount of rainfall. If you live in Zone 5, any plant
that is hardy to Zone 5 or higher (zone 6,7,8 etc.) would be cold hardy.
To find your Zone or the hardiness of any Proven Winners plant, visit
www.provenwinners.com.
Cold hardiness zones are a good guide to how well a plant will do in your
area. The colder your climate, the lower your zone rating. Zone 2 extends
far north, into Canada, and balmy Florida is a zone 10.
