ISLAND COMMUNITY BOARD
Volume 4, Issue 6
July, 2008
What a Difference a Year makes!
The Island Community Center is VERY near completion!
The construction will be done in the first weeks of July and
the kitchen equipment will be here soon! There is already a
workout room full of state-of-the-art Life Fitness machines,
fresh out of their boxes!
The committee is planning an Open House in July to show
off the amazing work that has been done by Kinlin Rutherfurd Architects, Z&S Contracting and the ICC Committee.
This has been a lot of work to coordinate all these talented
people to make an old
empty building into such a
beautiful new space.
Here are a few before and
after pictures of the upstairs
and downstairs, including the relocated bowling alley.
Below is the Fitness Center and the new machines. Keep
your eyes and ears open for Open House information!!!
Fishers Island Church Golf Classic
Joe Rogan founded the Three Churches Tournament years
ago and is grateful and thankful for all the work Elby and
Peter have done with it. Here is Joe selling tickets for the
’08 Classic.
Inside this issue:
Announcing the retirement of
President, Elby Burr and co-president,
Peter Burr of 12 years in charge of the
tournament. These two men have done
a superb job raising money these
twelve years! With Elby, Peter and the
other helpers, over $200,000 has been
raised for the churches. Their influence
in CT and ability to collect prizes and
donations will be hard to beat. The
remaining committee hopes to keep
things going. We wish Elby and Peter
good luck and good health and our
thanks for a supper job well done.

Recreation Path Update
Dear Fisher’s Island Residents,
In early May, the path was staked by land surveyor
CME Associates in conjunction with Mark K. Morrison
Associates, the landscape architects of the recreation path.
With the first onslaught of residents to the island on Memorial Day weekend, we received many comments overwhelmingly positive as the reality of the path becomes
more palpable. Many parents and children are excited
about the prospect of safe cycling up island and now that
energy is so much in the news, any activity that reduces
our carbon footprint is applauded. However, some questions did arise regarding both tree removal and the proximity of the path to the east end road. First, every precaution has been taken to avoid removal of many trees and we
need to inform the community that many of the trees that
will be removed are a direct result of a mandate from the
fire department who has suggested that many sick trees
and some healthy trees must be removed to promote better
access to hydrants as well as to protect utility poles exposed to sick trees that are too close to them. At the same
time, the Path Foundation is working closely with the Museum to save as many trees as possible and to maintain the
integrity of the Museum’s nature trails, so in some cases
we will be moving the path away from the road and onto
some of the Museum properties. Some of this property
was in fact donated to the Museum by FIDCO and
FIDCO, the Museum and the Path Foundation are working
together on this. It must also be said that because the Path
Foundation has tried to avoid asking for easements from
private property owners, the path will continue to be close
to the road in some places in order to respect the property
rights of owners along the path. In a few cases, we have
received easements from property owners and in other
cases, we are still hoping that some owners may volunteer
to negotiate with us so we can avoid removing trees and
seclude the path from the road.
Issues still being discussed are the path route between
the old guard house and new guard house which may either go straight up the north side of the road or the other
proposed route would be up Wilderness Point road and
then over the old dump site and back to the new gate
house. Wetland protection, permit and cost considerations
will be the main drivers of the decision.
The permitting process has begun with the DEC and
the community can rest assured that the Path Foundation
has made every effort to reduce the environmental impact
of the path as much
as possible. Also
beginning this
month is the bidding process, so
local landscapers
who want to bid for
the landscaping aspect of the path
should contact
Carter Sednaoui at
csednaoui@carsed.com or 609-577-1876. The Path Foundation wants to use local contractors as much as possible
and we hope that they will make a special attempt to keep
our costs down. We are already keeping our costs down by
building the path and repaving the road at the same time.
We have to admit that we are a bit concerned about the
escalating costs of oil which of course affects the price of
petroleum-based asphalt as well as transportation expenses, so we will keep you posted about realistic cost
estimates once we know them.
At the moment our targeted budget remains $3,000,000
and $2,500,000 in pledges has been received. We may
have to raise the target and will resume our pledge campaign in earnest in the next month. So if you or other family members and friends haven’t pledged yet, please see
the attached pledge form and pass it on to others.
For the purpose of sharing costs for ferries and equipment, we will be following FIDCO's schedule for the resurfacing of the road. Finally, if all goes according to
plan, the clearing for the path will begin in November and
the paving of the path will be done in April 2009. If you
have any questions, comments or suggestions, please let us
know. Thank you for your support.
-Larry Creel and John McGillian

Ocean Classroom 2008
The 11th annual Ocean Classroom for 7th graders took
place June 9-13 2008, Fishers
Island’s 7th graders joined
other students from Block

Farewell from Miss Wasdo
It is hard to believe that three years have passed by
since I first came to Fishers Island School. I can still
remember my first day and my first class, 8th Grade
General Music. I was so nervous and had no idea
what to expect. What I found myself surrounded by,
was a great faculty, amazing students and a strong
community. I have had the chance during these
three years to bring a great concert band to competitions, perform in numerous community functions
and to travel literally all around the world. I
feel honored to have been a part of this
school and fortunate to have had this job.
In the quest to become a better educator, I am off next
year to attend Hofstra University. I will be pursuing a
Master of Arts in Music Education and looking to
work as a Band Director. Although I am excited to
begin a new chapter in my life, I am sorry to leave
such a wonderful place behind. I cannot thank Fishers
Island enough for all it has done for me. This was my
first job as an educator, and Fishers Island will always
be close to my heart.
Here are a few shots from The Wizard of Oz
production that was directed by Sara
Rafferty and presented at the school to the
community at the end of May. The students
did a wonderful job. The sets and the costumes were also great as you can see..

37 invitations were sent out to people
with connections to the island. 15 seasonal residents responded and committed
to future Career Days events.
“ I like being in this school. I love this school.
This is a great school. Students are privileged
to attend a school like this”. Was the comment
of Paul Mileski, Electronics Engineer, communications Antennas Branch, Naval Underwater
Warfare Center. Paul and David Tonn, both
scientist, at the Navy were two of the eight participants at the first annual Career Day arranged
Students, grades 8-12, circulated in
twenty minute breakout sessions with
Harland Frazier, Trooper Gorgulio,
Trooper Ferreby, Dr. April White, Scott
Reid, Clem Cleveland. Mileski and Tonn
were the keynote speakers.
Career Day was open to all 8-12th grade
students, even if they are not registered
as a student at Fishers Island School.
Students from our island seasonal populations year-round private school students were invited to attend.

Another Great Poem by McKenzie Yerkes:
Imagination
My Imagination takes me away. I never know
where though. I never mind whether it’s an
exotic island or even a raging hurricane, I
don’t care where I am, as long as I am somewhere. My imagination can take me anywhere
I want to go even if I don’t know where I am.

St. Johns Increases Scholarships
Students in the class
of 2008 Fishers Island and
mainland schools will be the
first to benefit from increased
scholarships throughout their
higher education. St. John’s
is pleased to announce an
increase in annual scholarships to $3000 for each Fishers Island student. This is
made possible by the success
to date of the St. John’s Campaign for Fishers Island in
which it has raised significant new funds the many
needs stated in the campaign,
but particularly for scholarships for Fishers Island students.
Page 8
The scholarships are
available to all Fisher Island
students attending higher education. The scholarship program, started in the early
1990’s has been an important
part of growing the year
round community, together
with affordable housing and
healthcare. St. John’s also
manages the Fishers Island
Scholarship Fund, a separate
fund with similar purposes.
Bases on the early success of
the Campaign, St. John’s recently decided that it could
increase the size of annual
grants. The annual $3000 per
student (less for magnet students) amount represents the
combined grants from all the
funds managed by St. John’s.
Scholarships are available for
up to four years of undergraduate study, and two years
of graduate study. The total
scholarships for 2008 graduates and previous graduates
still in the program will total
about $70,000 this year.
The Scholarship program at St. John’s is run by a
committee including Susie
Brinckerhoff, Bagley, Reid,
and Peter Rugg, and chaired
by Dr. Phyllis Hansell, Dean
of Nursing of Seaton Hall
University, and a long time
Fishers Island resident.
