On the cover: Maya Hayao was
in first grade at Mason Rice when
she painted Smiley the snowman.
Maya loves art, and enjoys ballet and
playing violin too. She’s also a writer;
her favorite subjects are animals,
friends, and family. Maya’s plan is to
be an author and
artist when she
grows up. Her
favorite place
is Mason Rice
School. (Editor’s
note: it’s one
of our favorite
places too.)

avengers, monsters, fairies, or nice guys. In
this class you’ll learn the “how-to” of cartooning, and you’ll make original cartoon
drawings along with backgrounds, cool
lettering, and exciting stories. Classes will

Game Design with
Scratch continued
Kevin Osborn, Instructor
Continue your work in this popular free
programming environment and you’ll be
writing your own game in no time. You’ll
learn programming fundamentals and put
them to work to create animations, interactive stories, and games. Scratch was designed
at MIT not only to teach kids to program,
but also to do it in a way that is transferable
to more sophisticated languages, so when
you learn Scratch you are getting a head start
in learning more complicated languages
later. We’ll master different concepts weekly,
ending with a super show-and-tell of your
individual and group creations. For returning students in grades 3-5; new students
are welcome to join, but must enroll in our
“catch-up” class: KE144-W15-1; see below.

have some practice time before your class
starts (get your adult partner to work with
you), so you’ll be all set to join returning students this term. Grades 3-5.

Imagination Authors
Chyten Center staff, Instructors
Join us for this team approach to book
building. Design a fantasy world with major
and minor characters, settings and locales,
an extended backstory, and a world of wonder. Using novels like Harry Potter and The
Chronicles of Narnia as inspiration, you’ll
use artwork and brainstorming to develop
plot twists and dynamic characters, and
then you’ll write. Mini-lessons on writing
techniques will be provided along the way;
you’ll learn about dialogue, character, setting descriptions, improved word choice,
and plot and theme treatment. Your ideas
will be synthesized into one classwide novel
representing your amazing imaginations.

Lego Engineering &
Superhero Science
Wicked Cool for Kids staff, Instructors
Tackle both engineering and physics challenges in this Wicked Cool combo class.
First, investigate basic engineering concepts
while building a seesaw, vehicle, spinning
top, and other fun working mechanisms
with Legos. Then, explore physics to find
out what makes a superhero super. Conduct
gravity experiments to learn what it would
take for Superman to leap over tall buildings
in a single bound; create optical illusions to
understand how Wonder Woman’s jet can
disappear; investigate how Spiderman (and
real spiders) can walk up walls, and examine
Batman’s super gadgets that help him fight
crime. Can science make superheroes a reality? Join us to find out. Grades K-1.

this class was last offered in Winter 2014, but

Mad Science brings you a mix of exciting
activities in this winter’s program. Learn
about secret messages and how to send them
to friends using special codes; check out
telecommunications technology and assemble sound wave-making devices; learn about
the persistence of vision and how it makes
movies possible; mix it up as we explore the
physical aspects of chemistry; and embark
on a quest for alternative energy sources.
We’ll also tap into potential and kinetic
energy, and investigate aerodynamics and
a host of associated scientific concepts. As
always, there will be hands-on activities, and
amazing projects to make and take home.
