2005 SEASON PREVIEW
The 2005 Bulldogs had to
overcome some major obstacles
before they ever encountered an
opponent on the baseball field.
Due to major field renovations the
Bulldogs moved workouts to an off
campus facility for the entire Fall
semester. Though the field was
a short drive away from campus,
the setting was not ideal for college baseball. However, the 2005
Bulldogs proved their determination and demonstrating a solid
work ethic and desire to make the
best out of the situation. Assistant Coach Brian Vogel noted,
“The players were able to adapt to
the new setting and overlook any
adversity the situation presented.”
This year the quest for the State
Title continues. The Bulldogs are
led by a solid group of returning
sophomores along with some talented freshmen and transfers who
look to be contributors in their first
year.
The Bulldogs will be lead by
three returning All-Coast Conference players. Daniel Nava (So,
Of, Santa Clara) hit a staggering
.430 with 7 HR’s and 58 RBI’s and
was named All-American as well
as 1st Team All-Coast Conference.
Nava is a whole package- very
good outfielder , runs well and has
tremendous offensive prowess.
1st Team All-Coast Conference
selection Robbie McDonald (So,
If, Foster City) looks to anchor the
2
defense at 3rd base. McDonald
put up impressive numbers at the
plate in 2004 and has tremendous
arm strength. Durell Williams
(So, Of, Palo Alto) was named 2nd
Team All-Coast Conference in
2004. Williams has a sound swing
at the plate and has exceptional
speed on the bases. His defense
warrants comparison to some of
the past great centerfielders at
CSM.
Pitching should be one of the
Bulldogs strengths this year. A
host of freshmen look to compliment some quality sophomores.
Ben Langridge (So, RHP, Burlingame) has shown great command and is battling for one of
the starting spots. Kyle Woodruff
(Fr, RHP, San Jose) has been
dominating at times during the fall
and is also looking to start during
the 2005 season. Another solid
arm on the Bulldogs staff is Tyler
Fockler (Fr, RHP, Scotts Valley).
Fockler has shown good velocity
as well as a devastating breaking
ball. Bryan Faulds (Fr, RHP, San
Ramon) has a Bulldog presence
on the mound and great command
of three pitches. Ben Colton
(So, RHP, Reno, NV) and Jessie
Weller (So, LHP, Reno, NV) are
two returning Bulldogs that have
shown their ability to command
the strike zone and an unrelenting competitive spirit. Robert
Gamch (So, LHP, Santa Clara),
who also plays wide received on
the football team, is a left-handed
specialist and has shown he may
be ready to compete for a starting role. Daniel Hernandez (So,
RHP, Watsonville), Ryan Peters
(Fr, RHP, Santa Cruz), and Mikael
Ryder (Fr, RHP, San Mateo) look
to contribute in their first year.
Other sophomores who look
to lead the Bulldogs are: Eddie
Browne (So, If, Menlo Park), Matt
Canepa (So, C, Danville), Ricky
Navarro (So, Of, Palo Alto) and
Ronnie Glensor (So, Of, Reno,
NV). Browne has one of the
best gloves on the infield and is
a great contact hitter. Canepa
has a shown good leadership
abilities to compliment his physical ability. Navarro has a strong
accurate arm from the outfield and
is a disciplined hitter. Glensor
has shown good defensive ability
as well as having a potent lefthanded bat.
Some new faces to keep your
eye on are: Tony Cozzolino (Fr,
If, Half Moon Bay), Ivan Fujii (Fr,
If, Honalulu, HI), Cameron Leck
(Fr, If, Carson City, NV), Mitch
Moses (Fr, If, Lake Oswego, OR),
Henry Wrigley (Fr, If, San Carlos),
Michael Aicardi (Fr, Of, San
Francisco), Ryan Battle (Fr, Of,
Oakland), Nick Farren (Fr, C, San
Diego), Matt Van Orden (Fr, C,
Belmont).

College of San Mateo baseball continues to build on the great baseball
tradition which began over
In addition to making repeat
appearances in the state
playoffs, CSM is nationally
recognized for producing
quality student-athletes.
We are proud that so many
of our players accept
scholarships to four-year
colleges and universities and that
others sign contracts to play professional baseball. We also take great
pride in the fact that between
1995-2004, 95% of our baseball
players graduated from
CSM. Our program is as
strong as ever, led by an
exceptional coaching staff
that is committed to building successful teams and
to the development of our
student-athletes. We look
forward to the 2005 baseball season and wish the
bulldog team great success.

ATHLETICS ADMINISTRATION
Director of
Athletics
Gary Dilley became
the Dean of Physical
Education and Athletics
at College of San Mateo
in 1988. This was not his
first association with the
College Heights campus
or its athletic program.
As a student, Dilley
attended CSM from
1966 to ’68 and played
basketball for legendary
coach Jack Avina while
also a member of the track team.
This experience made him a lifelong
believer in the value of community
colleges and community college
athletics.
Following graduation from CSM, Dilley
completed his bachelor’s degree at
the University of California at Santa
Barbara, where he competed in track
and field. For 17 years afterward he
taught, coached, and served as the
Athletic Director at Half Moon Bay
High School.
Dilley is proud of the coaching staff
at College of San Mateo. He credits
Coach Doug Williams with taking the
baseball program to a new
level of all-around excellence, both on the field of
play and in the classroom.
That academic achievement aids in the placement
of players in four-year institutions.
Dilley, a firm believer in the
necessity of weight training
in athletics, has overseen
the development of the
CSM Weight Training Center. He was
also influential in the establishment of
a substance abuse education program
and a full-time athletic advisement program continues to be one of his goals.
He insists on the observation of state
recruiting regulations and believes
CSM’s athletic programs should feature local athletes. A native of San
Francisco and a graduate of Menlo
Atherton High School, Dilley earned
his master’s degree in Public Administration at the College of Notre Dame.
His wife, Pam, also a former CSM student, volunteers at various College of
San Mateo events. His son, Adrian,
is a recent graduate of UC Santa
Barbara.

“A REAL BULLDOG”
NICK EPIDENDIO
Nick Epidendio (Eppi) had a fantastic Bulldog career. Eppi was a key member of the 2003 and
2004 teams. He was a two-year starter for the Dogs as well as a two-year All-Coast Conference
selection. His athletic ability and baseball instinct allowed him to play a multitude of positions
as he started at 1st and 3rd base as well as the outfield. He hit 4th in the line-up for most of the
2004 season, not because of his power, but his ability to compete. It was hard to find a player on
the field who was a tougher out than Eppi. He frustrated pitchers with his relentless approach to
put the ball in play and fight off good pitches. In fact, ten pitch at bats became routine. Eppi’s
work ethic and preparation allowed him to maximize his ability on the CSM diamond. While at
CSM, Eppi understood his strengths and worked hard to eliminate some of his weaknesses. Eppi
was the winner of the 2004 “Bulldog” award and has transferred to San Jose State University on
a baseball scholarship. His enthusiasm and competitive spirit will be missed dearly, however he
has left an indelible impression on the Bulldog program.

BEN JULIANEL
COMPETE…Defined by Webster’s Dictionary…To strive or contend with
another or others. Coach Williams claims Ben epitomizes this definition as well
as any Bulldog he has had. In fact, Williams boasts Ben could be the best pure
competitor he has ever coached! “Ben has a rare interest and energy level towards competition” notes Coach Williams, “His enthusiasm and desire to get
into the battle is just outstanding.”
Ben had a somewhat frustrating career at CSM. The Carlmont graduate was
hampered by elbow soreness, limiting his playing time and effectiveness. “I
believe Ben’s ability to control his slider and curveball at an early age may have
contributed to some arm trouble. He clearly figured if he could command these
pitches he could neutralize most hitters.” CSM witnessed a great example of
his command as he pitched one of the best ballgames ever thrown by a CSM
pitcher. Julianel dominated a very
good Lassen College team with an
89 pitch eight-inning performance.
Unfortunately, that was the last outing Ben felt 100% while at CSM.
Perhaps faced with the most difficult
decision of his life, Ben contemplated giving up on his baseball career.
Two years of incredibly hard work,
combined with a great amount of frustration weighed heavily on the young
lefty. However, after much thinking, Ben decided to give it one more try. Ben
transferred to San Diego State, and began a slow process of getting back in
pitching shape. Ben found his arm getting stronger and most importantly he
still had the feel for throwing his breaking pitches. As a result, Ben excelled
at San Diego State in his senior year and signed with the St. Louis Cardinal
organization. Ben continued to improve his location, command, and velocity
with the Cardinals. As a reliever and closer, Ben started posting an incredible
ERA and strike out to walk ratio. He quickly gained the reputation of a top lefthanded prospect who is very tough on right-handed hitters and flat out nasty
on lefties.
In 2003, the New York Yankees finalized a deal that puts Ben’s stock and
reputation in perspective. The Yankees were willing to give up a major league player (Sterling Hitchcock) for two Cardinal
players. However, the Yankee’s would not settle on the deal until the Cardinals agreed to include Ben! Of course, Ben is
thrilled to be with the Yankee’s.
Ben continues to remember his roots as he regularly visits the Bulldogs. “He’s as loyal as they come,” says Williams “He
visits us, as well as Carlmont, whenever he comes to town. He talks to the team about how the past is a part of his present and how special his days as a Bulldog were.” Great stuff from the ultimate Bulldog Warrior. Best of luck Ben and keep
competing!

CSM BASEBALL: DID YOU KNOW?
• In the 44-year history of Bulldog Baseball,
College of San Mateo has finished over .500
in 43 seasons.
• The CSM baseball program holds mandatory
study hall, grade and attendance checks,
and has averaged a team grade-point average of 2.9 since 1995.
• Since John Noce began his 31-season
coaching career at CSM in 1962, 92 Bulldogs have played in the minor leagues and
10 have reached the Major Leagues.
• Former Bulldog pitcher John Wetteland
played in the 1996 World Series with the
New York Yankees, winning MVP honors
for an unprecedented four saves.
• The competitive Coast Conference has four
automatic bids to the postseason and regularly receives five invitations.
• CSM is the largest school in its district and
is currently celebrating its 83rd year as a collegiate institution.
• Since the 1995 season, the Bulldogs have
averaged 32 victories per season.
• The 2005 Bulldogs have three assistant
coaches who help players both on and off
the field.
• Bulldog players train year-round, including three 40-game schedules – the regular
Spring season, the Fall season, and an
optional Summer Bulldog Team.
• An individual strength program is provided
for each Bulldog player with one-hour mandatory weight-room workouts three times
per week.
• In the past nine years, 56 players have
received scholarships to attend four-year
schools following their career ar CSM, 50
receiving financial assistance.
• CSM coaches are in constant contact with
four-year and summer league coaches.

more hours on the field and play in more
games than players at four-year schools.
• The student-athlete who attends College of
San Mateo for two years will take virtually
the same course load and meet the same
academic requirements (general education)
as a student at a four-year college.
• CSM is located in a Northern California baseball “hotbed.” Within a 50 mile radius of the
campus, there are 16 community colleges,
nine four-year schools and two major league

HEAD COACH
Doug Williams, whose Bulldogs have averaged 32 wins per season since 1995, enters
his eleventh season as head coach. In 2004,
Williams guided the Bulldogs
to a 29-9 overall record, a third
consecutive Coast Conference
North Championship and a eight
trip to the Northern California
State Playoffs. The Bulldogs
were one out away from playing for a third consecutive trip
to the state Final Four. Finishing
ranked 4th in Northern California
and 8th in state rankings. One
of his most memorable experiences was seeing his first team
at CSM claim the 1995 Coast
Conference National Division
championship, and its first berth in the playoffs.
The Bulldogs posted a 38-11 record in Williams’
first season, setting a school single-season
record for victories. His ten year record at CSM
is 322-136 and he is a 4-time recipient of the
Coast Conference Coach of the Year Award.
Williams played NCAA Division I ball
at UC Santa Barbara during the 1987-88
seasons.Williams, a native of nearby Belmont,
played the infield and pitched for Carlmont High,
from which he graduated in 1983. He began his
Bulldog career as a player for legendary John
Noce during the 1984-86 seasons, including a
redshirt year. In his last season at CSM, the Bulldogs won the championship of the old Golden
Gate Conference, which was the school’s last
title until Williams guided the Bulldogs to the
1995 crown.
Williams began his coaching career as an
assistant to Noce at CSM from 1990-92, which
were the last three seasons of the 31 that Noce
guided CSM. Williams also gained summer
coaching experience in Perugia, Italy, in a professional league in Europe.
28
In 1993, Williams’ alma mater, Carlmont High
School, put out an emergency call for a varsity
baseball coach. When the opening suddenly
developed to lead a defending section champion, Williams answered
the call. He not only coached Carlmont to its second consecutive
Central Coast Section Division II
championship, but he called the
pitches as his staff hurled four
consecutive shutouts during the
playoffs—a feat never before
or since accomplished since
the sectional tournament began
in 1967.
Williams was hired as assistant
coach and pitching coach at the
University of San Francisco in
1994. He helped that team achieve its best
season in many years. When the CSM job
opened in the summer of 1994, Williams
returned to the Bulldogs.
Williams holds a Master’s Degree, having
written a thesis entitled “A Three-Dimensional
Biomechanical Analysis of Fastball and Forkball Pitchers.” Williams was featured on the
front page of an issue of Collegiate Baseball
Magazine as a result of his ground-breaking
thesis, which included a video and computer
analysis of former Oakland A’s pitching star
Dave Stewart.
“The 2004 Bulldog team was special. An
incredible group that personified Bulldog tradition! Although some previous teams may
have had more talent, this group had a great
will to win...and nearly got the ultimate prize.
Collectively they found they loved competing
and being in the big game. As always, we
continue to strive for our goal of winning the
State title, developing players physically and
academically, as well as transferring players
to the next level.”

student-athletes at SFSU on NCAA and University rules and regulations regarding
academic eligibility.
Brian currently coaches the outfielders as well as the hitters for the CSM Bulldogs.
During the summer of 2003 Brian was an assistant coach for the Foster City Colt league
baseball team. Brian has coached at the Stanford All-Star Camp, which is considered
one of the top showcases in the nation, as it draws some of the best high school
baseball talent in the nation. Brian graduated from SFSU with a degree in Speech and
Communications and is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Sport Administration
from St. Mary’s College. Brian is planning on getting married in August.
Coach Schefsky is in his fifth season with the Bulldogs. He attended Hillsdale High
School and lives locally with his wife Eileen and daughter, Samantha and son,
Jackson. Steve played baseball at Arizona State University and San Diego State.
Steve’s professional experience includes five years with the San Diego Padres
Organization. Steve has previously coached three years with Bishop O’Dowel High
School, and two years with Menlo Atherton High School. As a coach, Steve says
the most important aspect of the team is having an enthusiastic, hard working
group with a common goal to win. “We are thrilled to have a pitching coach with
this much experience,” notes Wiliams, “Steve’s major college experience, combined with his professional years, is so valuable for our players. He climbed the
baseball ladder and is totally dedicated to maximizing each pitcher’s chances to
do the same. Steve’s work ethic and passion for the game is infectious. He has
tremendous rapport with his pitchers and they produce for him.”
BILL DUPLISSEA
STEVE SCHEFSKY
The Bulldogs are fortunate to have an alumnus of CSM on the coaching staff. Former
standout catcher Bill Duplissea joins the Bulldogs for a third year. While at Serra High
School, Duplissea was 1st Team All-WCAL for two years. After high school Duplissea
chose CSM and was the Bulldogs starting catcher for two years. Duplissea earned an
athletic scholarship to U.C. Santa Barbara where he signed as a free agent with the
Los Angeles Dodgers after his junior year.
While in the Dodger ranks, “Coach Dup” set a team record by playing for all minor
league affiliates from rookie ball to AAA. Coach Dup enjoyed playing 6 years of
professional baseball.
Coach Dup is instrumental in developing the Bulldog catchers and hitters. CSM
benefits tremendously from his professional experience and knowledge.

2004 Season in Review
The 2004 season was another stellar performance by CSM. The Bulldogs were ranked 4th in Northern
California throughout the season. CSM concluded the preseason with a 7-3 record. During tough Coast
Conference play the Bulldogs amassed an outstanding 20-5 record. CSM had three game sweeps of De
Anza, Canada, City College of San Francisco, and Cabrillo. The Bulldogs captured the Coast Conference Championship for a third consecutive year and amassed a regular season record of 27-8.
During the first round of the playoffs CSM traveled to Santa Rosa and beat the Bearcubs 13-6. The Dogs
then traveled to Fresno to play a four-team state regional. CSM won the first game 12-5. CSM then
played Fresno City College and were within one out of heading to the state Final Four playoff for a third
straight year. However, a 2 out, ninth inning rally by Fresno ended the season for the Dogs. CSM finished the 2004 season with a 29-9 record and ranked 4th in Northern California and 8th in the State.

NOTABLE ALUMS
John Noce, Mr. Bulldog Baseball, coached
at College of San Mateo from 1961 through
1992. During the span of 31 seasons, he
established the most wins for a community
college baseball coach at 772. Noce’s teams
sent 72 players into professional baseball,
including eight to the major leagues.
The thing that John is most proud of
is that 52 of his former players have
gone on to become high school, college or professional coaches. Noce
himself finds great pleasure in seeing
so many coaches succeed with the
principles he has taught them.
Doug Williams describes the Noce legacy to Bulldog baseball by stating that
“John Noce is all about commitment, about pushing yourself to a level you didn’t
think you had within yourself”. A plaque, embedded in the drinking fountain at
the baseball diamond, commemorates Noce’s illustrious career. “It is gratifying
to see people you have worked with become successful.” Four of John’s five sons are
involved with coaching baseball. Noce and his wife, Nikki, reside in Aptos, California.

BULLDOG STRENGTH &
CONDITIONING PROGRAM
The College of San Mateo Baseball team considers
strength, conditioning, speed and agility a vital component
to excel on the baseball diamond. Three times per week
Coach Brien Shamp, the CEO and founder of the Optimal
Fitness Center, directs the players through a variety of
workouts to enhance each player’s overall fitness. Coach
Shamp works with the team on the track to increase cardiovascular fitness, foot speed, and agility. Coach Shamp is
an expert on cutting edge techniques to increase flexibility
and prevent injuries on the baseball field.
In the weight room Coach Shamp provides a lifting regimen to emphasize the muscles needed to play the game
of baseball. Free weights and Nautilus machines are used
to increase overall body strength. Core strength is a key
component to the Bulldogs lifting philosophy.
Coach Shamp also serves as the Bulldogs Nutrition
Coordinator. Players attend a nutrition workshop in which
Coach Shamp explains the importance of proper nutrition.
Coach Williams says, “Coach Shamp does not preach a
diet, but rather a lifestyle adjustment in how we eat. I believe
the athlete will notice a change almost immediately.”
