It has been an exciting few weeks at SJGS with lots happening including
the approval of our Pre-Kindergarten program!
Pre-Kindergarten
Thursday May 12 we received a letter from the Department of Education
Services to approve our 2016 Pre-Kindergarten program. All parents
of students enrolled have been notified and the youngest of our SJGS
community will join us from Monday 23 May. How exciting it is that we
now accommodate students from ages 3 to 18!
Year 10 students representing WA
Year 10 students Kate Inglis-Hodge and Meg Gallager will represent
Western Australia in the under 15’s state AFL and Netball respectfully. Both
girls have worked extremely hard to make these teams and should be
commended on their efforts. Well done girls!
Head of Pastoral Care
Mrs Ann Chew has now commenced her time with us at SJGS as Head
Of Pastoral Care. Although she is still finding her feet, she has started to
get to know the students and discover how the school works. Uniform
expectation is her first priority as you will note on the following pages.
Please be prepared for an enforcement of our policies.
Mother’s Day
The Early Learning Centre held their first Mother’s Day service last Friday
where students were able to be thankful for their mums and tell them
what made them special. Thank you to the SJGS Parents and Friends
Association for holding a ‘Mother’s Day Stall’ for all students from Kindy to
year 12 providing the opportunity for students to buy gifts to take home
for their mum.
Year 2
Mrs Holly Bently will have her last week at SJGS with us next week before
moving on to teach year 6 at All Saint’s college. I have appointed Ms
Monique Silvi as her replacement and she will commence on Tuesday 24
May. I on behalf of the whole school community would like to thank Holly
for her work here and wish her all the best in the future.
Construction work
As you may have noticed a large amount of building and construction is
happening at SJGS. The old uniform shop location is now being completely
transformed into office space for Mr Brad Krokosz and Mrs Ann Chew and
will be ready for them to move into within the coming weeks. We will
finally have a staff room where we can gather, meet and eat!! Thank you
to everyone who is respecting the construction zones during this period
of time.

APPEARANCE AND UNIFORM OF SJGS STUDENTS
The following is a reminder to students and parents of the School’s uniform policy.
Please refer to the 2016 School Handbook p21 – 25.
All students are expected to follow the school rules and parents are asked to ensure that these rules are adhered to by their son(s)/
daughter(s).
Wearing Of School Uniform
Students’ appearance must be neat and tidy at all times.
Shirts must be tucked in trousers.
Blazers are not to have their sleeves rolled or pulled up.
Skirts are not to be rolled up and must reach the top of the knee.

This must be worn to and from school in Terms 2 and 3.
Hair (All students)
Hair is to be clean, neat and tidy.
To maintain one shade of the normal range of naturally occurring hair shades.
Mohawks, mullets, dreadlocks, hair tattoos and other exotic or novelty hair styles are not permitted.
Boys
Hair is to be clear of the ears.
Fringes are to be above the eyebrows and is not to be styled in such a way that it is capable of falling below the eyebrows and over the
face.
Hair is not to fall over the collar and is not permitted to be tied back.
Facial hair is not permitted, boys must be clean shaven.
Side burns must not extend below the ear canal.
Hair is to be no shorter than a number ‘3’ cut.
Girls
Hair is to be tied back/clipped back away from the face.
Hair longer than the top of the shirt/blouse must be tied back.
Hair clips, bands must be in navy or white. No flowers or large bows.
Hair arrangements must allow students to properly wear their hat.
Scarves
These are permitted to be worn in Terms 2 and 3. They must be plain white or navy blue.
Gloves
They are permitted to be worn. They must be navy or black.
Jewellery
Students are permitted to wear:
One simple pair of plain gold or silver sleeper (12mm maximum size)/stud earrings (5mm).
One earring in each ear lobe.
One simple band ring.
One discrete gold or silver neck chain.
One discrete gold or silver link bracelet or bangle.
A watch to keep track of time.
Students are not permitted to wear:
Additional clear earrings located anywhere else in the ear or on the face.
Additional facial jewellery, including oral jewellery.
Anklets.
Tattoos
Tattoos are not allowed and should not be visible when wearing the School uniform.
Shoes
Must be polished plain black leather lace up or slip-on school or business style shoe with a solid sole and a business style heel.
Sneaker, skate style flat-soles, ballet style soft-sole are not permitted.
Sports shoes must have appropriate support and laced up correctly. Slip-on sneakers are not permitted.
Make-up
Students are not permitted to wear make-up.
Fingernails
These should be cut to a length appropriate to school activities and safety.
Nail polish is not to be worn.
Underclothing
Student underclothing is to be either white or skin tones and is not to have motifs or patterns that are clearly visible through the white
shirts or sports polo top.
Underclothing must not be visible.
NON-COMPLIANCE WITH UNIFORM AND APPEARANCE POLICY
If a student is unable to meet the uniform requirements on a particular day, then parents are requested to forward a note with
explanation to the Year Coordinator or Head of Pastoral Care.
Where a student’s dress code does not meet the School policy and no explanation has been forthcoming, parents will be notified and
the student will receive a uniform infringement.
Where ongoing non-compliance occurs, parents will be notified and disciplinary action will be taken in line with the school policy, this
may include students being withdrawn from classes and sent home from School and not permitted to return until the issue is rectified.
Where a student for medical reason(s) need an exemption or modification to a component of the dress and appearance code, a medical
certificate is required and formal approval must be granted by the Head of Pastoral Care.

Step-up for MS
On Sunday 1 May, 13 students from Years 9, 10 and 11 competed in the annual Step-Up for MS, an event designed to raise
money and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. The challenge required the students to climb 1103 steps in order to scale the 54
floors of the Central Park tower on St. Georges Terrace, the tallest building in Perth.
The students met with Mr. Aaron Hancock at the Cockburn train station at 8.15am in order to make the race time of 9.25am.
The three groups set off and by 10.00am all students made it to the top and celebrated with a sigh of relief, cup of water and a
look at the incredible view.
Special mention should also go to Nathaniel Chambers who won the boys 12-17 category and finished 27th out of 334racers.
Jarrad Beaverstock and Kaila Turner also managed to finish 3rd each in their respective gender categories for the 12-17
bracket. The students represented the school with pride and should be proud of their momentous achievement. The standard
has been set now for other schools that may compete in the future and thanks to the students of SJGS it is a very high bar to
reach.

Senior School Report
The Senior School Ball
The evening of April 13 saw 133 distinguished guests descend upon The Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle.
To my surprise, our dignified students arrived well over an hour early – which I was certainly not prepared for! Never have I
had students so punctual to attend an event. The only aspect which came close to rivalling the immaculate presentation of
the students and staff on the night was the transportation in which they came; meticulously detailed and maintained oldschool muscle cars, stretch Hummer limousines and even a Ferrari!
Once the students had gathered in the foyer, they were welcomed into the Ballroom with a delicious mocktail and a
suitably impressed Year Coordinator to greet them. With the housekeeping notices had been delivered, we wasted no time
in making our way to the dinner buffet, which the Senior Student Ball Committee did such a great job designing.
Cringe-worthy jokes were delivered in the lead up to the School Captain’s address, which allowed for our dinner to settle.
Then it was straight up onto the dance floor for our painstakingly practised “Nutbush City Limits” line dancing and more
tunes to get everyone moving, delivered by the one and only DJ Bazza.
Other notable proceedings throughout the night were the jive competition, professional portrait and group photographs,
student awards and of course the Belle and Beau waltz.
Overall, the 2016 Senior School Ball was a resounding success thanks to the involvement of the Year Eleven & Twelve
cohort, Senior Student Ball Committee and Teachers who attended the evening. It was fantastic to see all the students
looking so “grown up” and acting accordingly.

The year 10 outdoor education class went on a 4 day expedition to Margaret River at the end of last term. See what the
students responses where asked what they got out of the experience...

“Who wouldn’t love to explore the Margaret River region with a group of your best friends?
Throughout the Outdoor Education Expedition, I found my mental and physical strength in all of the tasks we performed.
I learnt and experienced great leadership and teamwork skills which I can now apply in everyday situations. Every minute
of this camp was extraordinary and I’m so glad that I took this opportunity and completed the camp! So many memorable
experiences were shared among us all and many of which I will never forget. From walking uphill across sand at Bob’s
Hollow to going to bed with concerns that a so-called ‘Captain Boranup’ was coming to haunt us whilst we slept... These
memories I will never live down. I thoroughly enjoyed surfing, kayaking and despite the challenge, the bushwalking
component, as it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“On the Outdoor Education expedition I gained a bit more independence for myself and an understanding of teamwork.
I worked with a lot of new people and made an effort to talk to people that I usually don’t talk to and found out that they
aren’t very different from me or other people. I got to hangout with a lot of new people and learn a lot of new things.
Through-out the expedition I really enjoyed kayaking it was a fantastic experience and would 100% do it all over again in fact
I would 100% be happy to go on that expedition again.”

Murdoch University MAP4U Project offers FREE Parents as Career Transition Support (PACTS) workshops for parents of Year 8 –10 students at
SJGS:

Coffee morning
Our first coffee morning was held on Friday 6th May, after the assembly. Thank you to all the parents who attended. It was great to see
you all get together for a cuppa and a chat.
Our next morning tea will be held on Friday 27th May, in the Wellstrand Centre, straight after the assembly. Looking forward to seeing
