The LINK NEWSLETTER OF THE HAMPTON LIBRARY AUTUMN 2016 A Message from the Board of Trustees The renovation to the HVAC system is complete. The Hampton Library is now cooled and heated by a cooling tower and auxiliary boiler housed in a new structure to the north of the main building. As part of the project, new thermostats and sensors have been added in locations that will make the system function more efficiently. These improvements have successfully met the cooling challenges occasioned by record high temperatures, especially those of late July and in August. They have generated considerable savings in energy costs, and will do so on an ongoing basis. Through careful consideration and reductions in staffing costs our 2017 budget will increase by only $30,983. This amount represents an increase of only 1.86% of taxes levied which falls below the recently recalculated tax cap. Our patrons continue using the Library and taking advantage of its extended hours and expanded programming in a safe, clean, comforting and comfortable space for both young and old in a renovated space. Your input is vital to us, and we encourage you to make suggestions to our Director Kelly A. Harris or any of her staff. On a most welcome note: by the end of 2017 we will have satisfied our mortgage which will be reflected in your 2018 tax bill. Annual Halloween Parade Saturday, October 29 at 10:00 am Fun for the whole family. Dress up in your best Halloween costume and meet at the library for a story before we set out on the town to scare up some treats. Halloween Parade 2015 From The Director’s Desk: Another busy summer season is coming to a close and what a summer it was. Our Summer Reading Club saw record numbers with over 200 participants. Those who completed the summer reading challenge were treated to an ice cream party with Mister Softee. Our circulating beach chairs have made trips to our local beaches and have inspired us to circulate more nontraditional library items. Our new collection we hope to debut this fall will include circulating bakeware -- but we need the community’s help. If you have gently-used novelty baking pans and cookie cutters taking up space in your kitchen please consider donating them to us. Check out page 5 for more information about donating your items to the Library. Please make sure to review the proposed 2017 budget for our Annual Budget Vote and Trustee Election on Saturday, September 24. Absentee Ballots will be available for those wishing to vote who may be unable to do so on the vote date. Our Annual Budget Hearing will be on Wednesday, September 21 at 3:30 pm followed by the regular monthly Board of Trustees meeting. What the Proposed Budget Means to You, the Taxpayer… For example, if your home was assessed at $1,000,000 for 2015/16, the Library’s share of your property taxes would have been $148.50. Under the proposed budget, this would increase to $151.26, or by $2.76 – for the entire year. The Link Autumn 2016 3 Adult Programs Health & Wellness Tai Chi with Turnbull Thursdays, September 15-October 20 at 12:30 pm Join John Turnbull for this six week class to increase your energy and balance, all while improving posture and body alignment. Wellness Challenge Wednesdays, October 5-November 16 at 10:30 am Fall into a healthier lifestyle with the Wellness Foundation’s 7-week food and exercise program. This is an educational program with the latest scientific information regarding nutrition and exercise with a weekly support group as well as online support. Alzheimer’s/Dementia Caregivers Support Group Every third Friday at 11:00 am Begins September 16 This newly formed group will meet at the library to provide attendees with information and resources in addition to emotional support. Staying Independent for Life: A Workshop for Older Adults Monday, November 21 at 11:30 am Presented by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, topics will include: balance and strength exercises, vision and medication review, fall prevention, buying safe footwear, and how to keep your home safe. Adult Coloring Corner Did you know coloring engages both sides of your brain? Studies show coloring has therapeutic potential. Located on the main floor by the Biographies, you’ll find pencils and pages of intricate designs for you to color. The Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film Festival with The Hampton Library Presents Take in Take 2 Films The Last Monday of the month at 7:00 pm September 26: Bending the Light A Michael Apted documentary that honors the artisans and craft of still and motion photography and, in particular, the glass that captures it all. October 24*: Here One Day When filmmaker Kathy Leichter moved back into her childhood home after her mother’s suicide, she discovered a box of audiotapes wherein her mother recorded details about every aspect of her life: from the challenges of her marriage to a State Senator, to her son’s estrangement, to her struggles with bipolar disorder. Author Talk: A Clamour of Crows by Ray Merritt Saturday, October 22 at 2:00 pm Reluctant protagonist Jonathan Tucker finds himself drawn into a maze of deception, betrayal, and literary references surrounding the life and curious death of his former law firm’s biggest client. The Devil Went Down to the Library Monday, October 31 at 6:00 pm We’re throwing a “Hell” of a Halloween screening party to celebrate iconic 1976 horror movie The Omen. Enjoy treats such as deviled eggs and devil’s food cake, and receive your very own pitchforks and devil horns. This program is free, but registration is encouraged (as are costumes). November 28: Welcome to Soldier Ride In 2004, Chris Carney, bartender at The Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, decided to ride his bicycle for charity. With the support of Talkhouse owner Peter Honerkemp and promoter Nick Kraus, Chris completed a 4,000 mile coast-to-coast ride - known as “Soldier Ride” - to raise over $1 million for The Wounded Warrior Project. In 2005 Chris was joined by two soldiers injured in Iraq to ride again, raising community awareness and meeting fellow veterans along the way. Author Talk: The Two Sides of You by Elaine Breakstone Saturday, November 5 at 2:00 pm An intriguing look at bi-hemispheric behavior and how to discover both sides of your brain. The book includes interviews with people who are successful at tapping into the right and left sides of their brain, plus “exercises” to help make each side work harder. A Rollicking Evening with Wendy Raebeck September 27 at 7:00 pm Join colorful character and local author Wendy Raebeck for an informal and slightly off the wall - interview about her books (which include I Did Inhale: Memoir of a Hippie Chick and the newest, Expedition Costa Rica), her life, and anything else that strikes her fancy. The Hampton Library Ghost Hampton by Ken McGorry October 4 at 7:00 pm The latest novel by the author of Smashed. Lyle Hall, Bridgehampton’s most successful real estate lawyer and most resented resident, has been forced into retirement by a car accident. He also now sees and hears things no one else can, like Jewel - the long dead girl who tells Lyle his daughter will die in four days. It might be a hoax, but hordes of paranormal enthusiasts coming to town believe Lyle, as does his new nemesis, a scheming TV reporter. The Library is seeking donations of gently used or new cake pans and cookie cutters for our circulating bakeware collection. Our BridgeKid programs are designed for participants who are a little bit older and can work independently. These programs are perfect for students who are too old for story time but are not quite ready for our teen department. Minecraft Club Book Reviews Wednesdays at 7:00 pm Ages 7 and up If you love Minecraft as we do, join us as we dig and build our way to creating the world of our dreams. Play in creative mode and use your imagination to build anything you can dream up. Prove your skills in survival mode as you create shelter and tools to protect yourself from the creatures of the night, or take part in any number of multi-player games. Gross Me Out Tuesday, November 15 at 4:00pm Come to the library on a mission to gross out the librarians. The hunt is on for some of the scariest, most disgusting information you can find in our library. The Land of Stories: An Author’s Odyssey by Chris Colfer The latest book in The Land of Stories series is here! In hot pursuit of The Masked Man’s Literary Army, Connor quickly discovers that the only place this battle can happen is inside the pages of his own stories. Fans of the series will love meeting new characters in this fast-paced, laugh-out-loud adventure. The Nameless City by Faith Erin Hicks There are two sides to every story. If each side is willing to fight for what they believe, how will things play out? This problem is as old as time and The Nameless City puts the reader in a perfect place to ponder the question. The Link Autumn 2016 7 Children’s Programs Every Week News Play-a-palooza Tuesdays at 10:00 am For children from birth - 4 years from the Joyce Goldman Children’s Room After a busy summer of playing Olympic games in our backyard and breaking Summer Reading records, The Children’s Room is ready for some fall fun. School may be back in session, but that doesn’t mean the excitement has to end. New programs, including Preschool Story, Time and Kids karaoke join our schedule of family favorites such as Play-a-palooza and Rhyme Time. September marks the triumphant return of Lego Mania on Thursdays after school. On Friday’s we’ll be celebrating our favorite authors, exploring the tastes of autumn, and participating in some awesome challenges. This is a special time for parents and caregivers to play with their young children in a fun, creative environment. Toys, puzzles, dramatic play, art exploration and visits from experts in the community make this a fantastic opportunity for families of young children to learn, play and explore together and for parents and caregivers to learn from each other. Lego Board Game Friday, September 9 at 4:00 pm For children ages 4 and up Everything is awesome when you play this game. The object of this activity is to reach the finish space with the tallest Lego tower. It sounds easy, but with every roll of the dice, players will face obstacles sure to keep this game interesting. Happy 100th Birthday, Roald Dahl! Friday, September 16 at 4:00 pm This year marks Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday. In celebration of the man who introduced readers to Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory Matilda, BFG, and more we will be creating art that will transform us into some of the characters we all know and love. Roll the Dice Drawing Game Friday, September 23 at 4:00 pm For children ages 4 and up The object of the game is to roll the dice and draw all the parts to create a finished picture. The first player to complete their work of art wins! Ghost in a Jar Friday, October 7 at 4:00 pm For children ages 4 and up Bring a spooktacular pet home this fall. We’ll start by reading stories about some friendly ghouls and finish the afternoon by building houses for our ghostly friends. Spectacular Spooksnackular Friday, October 28 at 4:00 pm Get into the spooky spirit early this year as we watch some seasonal favorites and learn how to make creepy crawly snacks that are sure to feed your monstrous appetite. Lewis Caroll: A Very Unbirthday Celebration Friday, November 4 at 4:00 pm Last November marked 150 years since Alice in Wonderland was published. In true Lewis Caroll fashion we’ll be honoring one of his favorite stories with a Happy Unbirthday Celebration. Caramel Apple Party Friday, November 18 at 4:00 pm For children ages 4 and up Celebrate the sweet taste of autumn as we make delicious Carmel apples. We’ll have all kinds of special toppings on hand, so you can make your treat as unique as you are! We’ll be celebrating all things Star Wars, in honor of Star Wars Reads Day, with activities, trivia, and of course books! Light refreshments served. “In arm babies” welcome. www.hamptonlibrary.org The Link Autumn 2016 10 Historically Speaking By Julie Greene, Local History Librarian Bridgehampton and the American Dream In 1912, seeking refuge from the stressful Wall Street world, James Truslow Adams (1878-1949) decided to build himself a cabin (which later became a larger but still modest cottage called Wigwam) on two acres on Jobs Lane in Bridgehampton across from the ancient Mecox Cemetery. There he and his buddies could go camping, and he could find solace to read and write. His very first book, which he published himself in August of 1916 and printed through the Bridgehampton News, was Memorials of Old Bridgehampton. In it, he captured the essence of the hamlet through his keen eye for history. Originally selling for $1.50 a copy and expected to be bought by locals only, the book in fact sold out, and within two years it was commanding $75 per copy because of its appendix of gravestone inscriptions of all five cemeteries of the vicinity, a gold mine for genealogical researchers. Enthused by the success of Memorials, Adams set forth to right a companion book, History of the Town of Southampton, East of Canoe Place, in 1918. Considered the “model piece of local history,” it established him as a credible historian. Photo Credit: Bridgehampton Museum He was appointed to the Paris Peace Conference during World War I as part of the American delegation. After the war, Adams started writing about the history of New England, which resulted in his epic three-volume series, The Founding of New England. Published in 1921, it won the Pulitzer Prize the next year. Adams married a local girl, Kathryn M. Seely, who was 20 years his junior, and eventually sold the Bridgehampton house. In 1931, with the publication of The Epic of America, Adams took on the broader history and philosophy of this country, and in it he came up with the term “The American Dream,” which he referred to as “that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. The Cocktail Party held at Louis and Susan Meisel’s Sagaponack Sculpture Field was an elegant event with gracious hosts, wonderful food and amazing raffle items announced by Steven Gaines. At Fridays at Five we welcomed new and returning authors for eight evenings in July and August. Attentive crowds listened to Samantha Bruce-Benjamin with Bonnie Grice; Joe Nocera; Michael Shnayerson; Roger Rosenblatt; Richard Reeves; Steven Gaines; Carl Safina; and Ray Kelly with Ken Auletta. The Friends are sadly saying good-bye to three long time members who will be moving from the area. Pat and John Wood have had central roles, …he as secretary for many years and she as Fridays at Five supplies coordinator and frequent food overseer. Guy Tudisco has for many years been the coordinator of the cocktail parties, dealing with so many of the logistics that such an event entails, including obtaining permits and working with local authorities. Now we begin planning anew for next year’s events. We will be investigating fundraising alternatives and would welcome ideas. We meet at 1:30 on the fourth Tuesday of the month in the Library.
