DOUBLE THINK

two
works
by
the
award‐winning
Australian
choreographer
and
performer
Byron
Perry;
Gogglebox
and
Double Think. ABOUT THE SHOW
GOGGLEBOX
It’s
safe
to
say
that
our
relationship
with
TV
has
changed
dramatically
over
the
last
decade
–
but
aren’t
those
of
us
that
grew
up
with
it
just
a
little
bit
uneasy
when
we
read
articles
saying
that
TV
is
dead?
Whilst
we
sit
on
our
couches
bathed
in
the
luminescence
of
our
smart
phones
and
tablets,
the
Television
is
desperately
contorting
itself
through
whatever
digital
hoops
necessary
to
escape
the
redundancy
that
threatens.
Gogglebox is
a
nostalgic
romp
for
a
short
attention
span,
a
truly
analog
experience
of
the
psychological
relationship
that
we
all
have
had
and
may
continue
to
have
with
our
beloved
box.
DOUBLE
THINK
Byron
Perry
presents
a
shifting
world
of
light
and
shadow
with
this
playful
investigation
into
opposition.
Through
movement‐based
conversations,
one
tall
man
and
one
short
woman
make
imperfect
sense
as
they
shed
some
dark
on
a
light
subject
in
a
complex
world
of
simple
objects.
Double Think
utilises
performer‐operated
lighting
and
live
set
manipulation
to
create
a
constantly
evolving
landscape
of
relativity.
“Double Think is a tightly realised piece of dance/theatre. It’s slick, engaging and arguably Perry’s best work yet”

DOUBLE THINK REVIEW
Stephanie
Glickman,
Herald
Sun
IT
SOUNDS
heavy.
A
dance
work
based
on
George
Orwell’s
1984
and
the
Heisenberg
uncertainty
principle.
But,
in
practice,
Byron
Perry’s
Double Think
is
a
richly
nuanced
duet
between
two
unique
dancers
—
Kirstie
McCracken
and
Lee
Serle.
It
melds
sinewy
movement
with
well‐conceptualised
lighting
design
and
hums
with
an
offbeat
sense
of
humour.
A
wooden
wall
with
multi‐sized
movable
blocks
creates
frames
for
faraway
action
and
platforms
for
slippery‐limbed
solos.
Torsos
and
arms
splay
out
of
geometric
openings,
mirroring
each
other
with
a
kaleidoscopic
pulse.
Supported
by
Luke
Smiles’
sound
design,
movement
and
visual
design
have
their
own
intertwined
choreography
that
never
feels
forced.
Tall,
lanky
Serle
and
McCracken,
petite
and
fluid,
rift
off
each
other
like
comfortable
friends.
There’s
a
harmony
in
their
attack,
a
conversation
in
blinks,
a
casual
word
association
game
accented
by
body
ripples,
shrugs
and
slumps
and
a
satisfying
sense
of
a
multi‐dimensional
relationship
at
play.
Double Think
is
a
tightly
realised
piece
of
dance/theatre.
It’s
slick,
engaging
and
arguably
Perry’s
best
work
yet.
