2003
Born in a Residence Hall.
four college freshmen asked
themselves bold questions:
“Wouldn’t it be awesome if… we could start something bigger
than ourselves? … we could change the perception of college
students? … we could change the world?”
From those questions, the Pay It Forward tour was born. Today, STLF has grown into a
501(c)(3) nonprofit with a Minneapolis-based office of full-time staff, coordinating a
national network of volunteer student leaders.
STLF empowers students by giving them opportunities to lead. We engage hundreds
of students in volunteer leadership each year, helping them develop tangible skills to
benefit their careers, personal lives, and communities.
Our innovative Core Model allows leaders to use their individual talents while working
as a team. At every level, we encourage teams of leaders to share responsibilities and
take on challenges that leverage their strengths.
Students often resort to
inaction because of:
We empower students to act for change
by offering:
Lack of self-esteem
Affirmations and a safe space to be themselves
Lack of community
A common experience, new friends, and the chance to share stories
Lack of ownership
Direct involvement and countering the misconception that people
need a title to lead
Lack of resources
Financial Aid and time set aside to learn and serve
Lack of exposure
The opportunity to travel and stretch outside comfort zones
Lack of experience
Firsthand involvement with social issues that are humanized
We believe leadership already exists within every young person.
Our aim is to provide a meaningful experience that helps that leadership emerge.
