ANDREW’S ARMY NE WS LE TTE R OCTO BE R 1 7TH / UNDE R 7S COALPIT HEATH FC V AEK BOCCO Let me start by welcoming you all to this our first ever ‘match report’ newsletter, this should be the cast for the newsletters now. They shall be produced after our fixtures, rather than training sessions last season. I do hope you enjoy reading them! Well let’s get the ball rolling (pardon the pun), last Sunday saw our boys take part in their first ever competitive/friendly match & I have to say that as a father & a very keen football fan/supporter I saw this moment as a bit of a milestone for me, as I can imagine for many of you too. I try and help out in training & gee up the boys during the training matches & to see all of them in the Orange on Sunday brought a lump to my throat, I was really bloody nervous I don’t mind admitting! I think all of the boys were blissfully unaware of our nerves, which was a good thing! The first ever match for these boys was against a very well organised team in AEK Bocco, boasting such a high number of squad members that it called for 3 games. I must admit when I heard that they had already played a number of games & that coupled with their warm up drills and the fact they had an out & out keeper, I was a little worried from this, should I of been? MATCH 1: COALPIT HEATH FC: 1. LUKE (W) 2. BEN 3. COLE 4. CALLUM (H) 5. SCOTT 6. OLIVER 7. GEORGE (GK) Okay, here goes... The wait was over and we all took our places, my word there were lots of us! We really didn’t know what to expect, we really didn’t. The game kicked off & sure AEK started brightly & created a bit here and there, attacking up the hill in the first half. Our boys were a little slow out of the blocks, but that was down to finding their feet & there is nothing wrong with that, I guess it’s to be expected. Then AEK came up the hill & there forward took a shot from a fair distance & unluckily for George the ball trickled (and I mean trickled) over the goal line as he attempted to gather it, although it was a goal & yes they all count, we were unfortunate to concede I thought. So we were one down & it was early doors too, what were the boys to do? I will tell you what! By golly they played AEK off the park for pretty much the rest of that half, that’s what they did. The boys at the back started to gel & get to the AEK players as they started to come closer to the goal, defending, tackling & kicking the ball out of play to break down the moves. Cole, Scott & Oliver all pulling their weight as the game went on. In the middle of the park though, WOW! Now I’ve seen football live & on the tele like the most of us, but can any of you deny that what we saw before our eyes would not have graced the goggle box?!?! As the moves came out of our defence Ben was picking the ball up from the likes of Luke (who also worked like a trogon horse in the midfield) and bring the ball down the pitch & some of the movement & link up play with Callum was extraordinary, truly. I bet I was not on my own when I was seeing these waves of attacking play, passing the ball between the players was truly cutting open AEK & I’ll bet my bottom dollar that their coach didn’t believe for one moment that this was our first game. Then again, could we believe it? The thing is, all the worry at the start, all that worry & when you through them in their it’s down to them & by golly they all & I mean all just got down to it & really enjoyed themselves. MATCH 1 Rambling over, in a nutshell one of our flurries down the pitch paid off with a well taken individual effort from the tireless Ben Sims, slotting the ball past the keeper with considerable ease. Later in the 1st half, AEK came forward again & in a defence lapse, the player had what seemed a straight forward one on one with George in goal. He did indeed take his chance by slotting the ball to George’s right hand side, only for George to pull off a superb save and push the ball away and out for a corner, a bloom’in good save from what looked a certain goal! 1-1 at half time & the boys really were enjoying themselves. The 2nd have continued in the same vain really, plenty of possession for us Oranges & I have to say I don’t really remember George having to pull off any more heroics in the 2nd half, so this you have to say pays credit to our back line in Cole, Scott & Oliver. Going forward and breaking AEK down in the 2nd half proved a bridge to far come the end, although there we did have a number of very good chances. One of which appeared to strike the upright & go over the line! Although, ref saw in another way! Sepp, if you’re reading this, you know what we need... Okay, so it wasn’t all one way traffic by any means & to be fair to AEK, there were a few hairy moments at the end, & I remember muttering to myself, no no no! we don’t deserve this! Thinking they were gonna sneak one at the death. 1-1 it finished though & each and every one of the boys did fantastically well & scurried off for a pep talk with Andrew. MOTM in this game was Ben, the ball wizard. To pay homage to Ben, I’d like to recite some lyrics from my favourite band, The Sultans of Ping FC... Give him a ball & a yard of grass He’ll give you a move with perfect pass Give him a ball & a yard of space He’ll give you a move with godly grace PHOTO GALLERY MATCH 2: COALPIT HEATH FC: 1. COLBY 2. LUKE (M) (GK – 2ND HALF) 3. TOM 4. FLETCHER 5. JACOB 6. CHARLIE (C) 7. CHARLIE (B) (GK – 1ST HALF)) Okay, so here we go again. Another fresh batch of new boys in this match scenario! Again, we were a little slow out of the blocks to get going. A little more so then the first game & indeed it weren’t too long before we found ourselves a goal behind. Again though, to be fair to our boys, a soft goal, which in the scheme of things was kinda to be expected as we started to find our feet. The boys were sussing out the positions in which they were expected to play, slowly we started to work, although we struggled to get out of our defence & midfield for long periods of the first half. This though was not the case for the whole of the half and Luke found himself marauding down the centre on more than one occasion & Fletcher & Charlie (C) also started to push a little higher too. Colby, playing at the back really was putting himself about, challenge after challenge; he really was doing his best to ensure that the ball went out of play in the event of an AEK attack. I remember one miss timed challenge which saw the AEK lad break free & I thought to myself ‘get up & get back!’ & he did just that, sprinted back and tackled the same lad and cleared the ball out, he & Tom were starting to gel to in defence, working very hard as a bank of 2 at the back throughout the half & indeed the game. We did however concede once more in the first half, this a much stronger move and strike then the first & a well deserved goal from the young lad from AEK. 0-2 at half time. Again, Colby & Tom worked very hard in defence (they had to!) but it was our turn to come forward now & all the other boys seemed to leave poor Colby & Tom and found themselves camped in the AEK half for long periods, some mazey runs and power kick/shots from Charlie (C) ensued & indeed we had our chances, but unfortunately were unable to take them. Virtually the last kick of the game, saw us concede a 3rd goal & again were very unlucky to do so, poor Luke after all his heroics was unable to gather a ball & it was forced into the net to make & finish the game 0-3. The score line did flatter somewhat though & even though those boys had lost their first game, all heads were up high and they sprinted back to Andrew for their pep talk, well done boys, I thought they accounted for themselves very well & again a joy to watch. MOTM in this game was Colby, the bean pole at the back! (I can say that, I’m his dad!). To pay homage to Colby, I’d like to recite some lyrics from that great 80s double act Ashford & Simpson... And now it’s solid (the defence) Solid as a rock! Okay, it’s not in the same vain as The Sultans, but I kinda started something there & I had to follow it through, god knows what Match 3’s is In the 2nd half, the balance then started to shift, gonna be... Oh, Colby! You are the Man of the it really did. We started to click, positions & the match, well done my boy! bulking up of the midfield started to ease a little. Luke now finding himself in goal and Charlie (B) coming up in front of him. Of course AEK continued to come forward (now going down The Hill) & had a string of shots from a crowded penalty area, all of which like was equal to. MATCH 2 PHOTO GALLERY MATCH 3: COALPIT HEATH FC: 1ST HALF 1. JAMES 2. RORY 3. CALLUM (K) 4. BEN 5. SCOTT 6. COLE 7. CALLUM (H) (GK) 2ND HALF 1. JAMES 2. RORY 3. CALLUM (K) 4. CHARLIE (C) 5. FLETCHER 6. COLBY Okay, the third & final game today then. Here we find a few of our guys who haven’t played yet, like Callum (K) , Rory & James & mixed with them were a few of our boys from the earlier matches, each having a half a piece. So, first half we have the downward slope! Now, no disrespect to AEK but be absolutely bossed this half & the power in Ben, Rory & Callum going forward was immense. Fair play to their keeper, because if it was not for him, we really could have ripped them to shreds! That said, of course we scored! Rory, Rory Rory... it had to be Rory. In the back of my mind I was thinking I hope Rory scores... Why? Well id told the wife all about the Rory ‘leap’, you know the one! Sure enough Rory snatched a goal to make it 1-0 & off he went... He took his time mind! But there it was, the ‘leap’ & I then immediately glanced to the bench and saw all three of them (Andrew, Justin, Dave) rolling about pointing at Dave (Rory’s dad) in great glee upon seeing this fine tuned celebration! The onslaught basically went on throughout the half & saw more goals coming, another from Rory the Salmon & a fine strike coming from the lead boot of the mighty Callum (K). I offered my gratitude as he raced up the touchline to mum & dad! 3-0 at half time & a fine, very fine first half display. A few player changes for the 2nd half & so the uphill struggle would wait! Again though, the lion’s share of the ball was in the AEK half & it wasn’t long before another goal for us, indeed almost straight away! Hatrick to Rory, wow, in his first game! 4-0 to us & now rather importantly to those who were topping up, we had now overcome the AEK aggregate score line. We, Coalpit Heath, the new comers were up on the day! AEK’s chances in the 2nd half were indeed limited although they did of course have a few, most of which were cleaned up without too much concern. As the match went on, so did the pressure, again, Charlie & Callum, with Fletcher & James coming in from midfield, all of which worked to produce yet another chance for Rory, which he dually took & netted himself his 4th of the game and the Oranges 5th. 5-0 the final score. Once again, all the boys played ever so well & very much deserved the victory, by now of course the icing on the cake was the 6-4 aggregate win on the day. All the boys then voiced their support for the away team in AEK Bocco, with 3 cheers! Then off to the hut for Hot Dogs & then some donuts as a special treat too. The MOTM awards and a special thank you to all the boys then took place. I hope to see all of these as a regular occurrence, as I think it shows everyone just how friendly we are as a club, three cheers & hot dogs for everyone shows great togetherness & respect & the weekly awards to the kids will show them that they will be rewarded for their hard work, regardless of the result, a positive can be brought from almost any situation & the main thing is, it’s about having fun! We kicked off and started to climb the hill, again Colby was at the back, although he did have MOTM in this game was, well who else but a bit of a roam this time out but was quickly Rory the goal machine! So, to once again pay ushered back again when realising that there was a permanent AEK fixture in a half, no matter homage to Rory, the MOTM I’d like to recite some lyrics from a well known children’s TV where the ball was! show... Rory, the goal machine! Rory, the number one star! He’ll be running down the line, look ‘in real fine, Chasing down the ball, shouting it’s mine, mine MINE!!! Rory the goal machine! To be honest, yes, I did tinker with that one a bit...Rory! You are the Man of the match, well done fella! So that brings us to the end of the report for this, our first ever game... MATCH 3 Coalpit Heath FC 6 – 4 AEK Bocco PHOTO GALLERY NEXT WEEK: Saturday 23rd October - Training (10.30 – 12.00) Sunday 24th October – Home match Vs. Bristol Rovers JSC Kickoffs is at 14.00hrs, but please ensure you arrive no later than 13.30 Hrs. Please, please, please! If you can’t make it, let Andrew know, as the team sheets will be arranged prior to the weekend. NEWS IN BRIEF: Hot Dogs... Now I’m not about for this Sunday, so as a heads up, it was mentioned to me about maybe taking it in turns to ‘shout’ the hot dogs. In a nutshell it cost me about a tenner for the stuff (forget the donuts, that was just a special for the boys first game, a bit overkill on my part!) & I found Tesco in Yate the best bet. 48 buns, 50 dogs (microwave ones!!!) & a tub of ketchup came to basically £10. Brian, George’s dad has kindly offered to do it for this week’s fixture and our next game at home after that will be Bitton United on the 28th of November, so hands up!
