Triple T Excavating, serviced by Wajax
Equipment, is using two ZX250LC-5

Meanwhile, Cedar Lake Mining, serviced by
Warrior Tractor, has a fleet of five EX3600-6

working in several coal mines in Alabama.

Hitachi excavators are shaping
155 acres of twists and turns
right now on Vancouver Island —
the future home of an exclusive
high-end membership and
company-rental test track where
auto enthusiasts will put the
rubber to the road.
T
he track, named Vancouver Island Motorsport
Resort, is the vision of GAIN, Vancouver
Island’s Premier Dealer Group, which
represents performance brands including AMG,
Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz,
MINI, Porsche, Smart, Sprinter, Subaru and
Volkswagen. And what better place to test those
wheels than in the Cowichan Valley, against a picturesque
backdrop of mountains and towering trees?
Triple T Excavating was chosen to work on the site,
along with Chris Erb from SupErb Construction.
The site is estimated to be completed in spring 2016.
Headquartered in Nanaimo, British Columbia,
Triple T Excavating covers a spectrum of services
including excavation, civil work, acreage development
and septic systems.
Rick Tomlinson started the company with his brother,
Curt, in 1991. Tomlinson had been working in the
oil felds overseas and moved back to Vancouver
Island where his family is based. He learned about the
construction industry on his own.
“I had one skid steer and started doing work for free,”
Tomlinson said. “I then got a mini excavator, and
as I learned more about the industry, that free work
eventually turned into a business.”
TACKLING THE TRACK
Triple T Excavating already has some experience
working with the luxury car industry. The company,
with Chris Erb and SupErb Construction, completed
the excavation work for BMW, Mercedes-Benz and
Subaru dealerships in Nanaimo, as well as Porsche
and Volkswagen dealerships in Victoria.
Now Triple T Excavating will be moving about 300,000
tons of dirt to bring the test track to life – removing
overburden and completing the fnal cuts and
flls to bring the track bed to fnal levels. Then the
company will backfll with layers of gravel to
allow for the asphalt paving. Total volumes
of dirt removal and gravel backfll
will exceed 750,000 tons.

Tomlinson is tackling the project with a few of his
Hitachi excavators: two ZX250LC-5 excavators and one
ZX225LC-3. Due to the nature of the company’s work,
Tomlinson outfts his excavators with thumbs and Falling
Object Protective Systems (FOPS) cabs.

Excavating since nearly the company’s beginning.
You could say he’s a fan of the ZX250LC-5 and its
balance of productivity and comfort.
“It’s got all the power in the world and it’s fast,” Arsenault
said. “It’s also comfortable. When you work 10- to 12hour days, you should be comfortable. I’ve got a cup
holder for my thermos, room for my lunch kit and jacket.”
The company keeps its Hitachi
excavators on rotation, generally
trading them in as they reach 7,000
- 8,000 hours. Curt Tomlinson,

maintenance during the lifespan
of the machines.
“We keep them serviced, and
they keep running,” Curt
said. “It’s pretty simple.”

MORE THAN BUSINESS
For Rick Tomlinson, it’s not all business; it’s about
relationships. Triple T Excavating is a tight-knit group.
“We’re a small company, and all my employees are
like family,” he said. “We spend time outside of work
for get-togethers and barbecues.”
Rick also has strong dealer support from Wajax
Equipment based on a longstanding relationship
with Chris Dalton, Wajax’s Vancouver Island branch
manager, and Michael Wood, sales rep.
“Wajax provides good support and is very helpful,”
Rick said. “I used to buy another brand from Chris when
he worked at a different dealership. When he moved
to Wajax, I started buying Hitachi from him. When we
need something, Wajax helps us out right away.”
As for the test track, Rick, Curt and their crew are
looking forward to seeing the fnished project.
“It will be a nice attraction for the area,” Rick said.
“I plan on taking a few laps!”

Caddo Creek Resources, a subsidiary of The
North American Coal Corporation, is using a
new ZX470LC-5 to perform multiple tasks at its
Marshall Mine.
The new production-class excavator was
commissioned at the beginning of the year and is
being used to load coal, haul dirt, dig sumps for
water management, perform ditch work and more.
“It’s probably the most versatile machine we
have out there when it comes to different types
of applications,” said Chris Taylor, operations
manager at Caddo Creek Resources. “A lot of
companies have trackhoes for very specific tasks
like overburden removal or coal loading. We’re
using it in all applications. It runs every day.
It’s always doing something.”

Caddo Creek Resources mines lignite for Cabot
Norit Americas’ activated carbon production
facility in Marshall, Texas. The facility is one of the
largest producers of powdered, activated carbon
worldwide and leads the power generation industry
in activated carbon technology for mercury
removal. Across the U.S. and Canada, many states
have implemented regulations and standards to
reduce mercury emissions as they can create
environmental and health issues.
Taylor’s experience with other Hitachi machines
played a large role in the rental of the ZX470LC-5.
“We considered pricing, performance and my
experience with other Hitachi machines,” Taylor
said. “Seeing how Hitachi machines operate from a
cost-effectiveness standpoint made them the better
overall choice. And quite honestly, the operators
like running the machine. A happy operator makes a
productive operator!”

PROFITABLE PRECISION WITH HITACHI’S
GRADE REFERENCE-READY PACKAGE
Several of Hitachi’s recently released Dash-6 excavators are
available with a new option to take efficiency to another level.
These EPA Final Tier 4 (FT4)/EU Stage IV excavators can be
equipped with a grade reference-ready package straight from
the factory.
We caught up with Matthew Hendry, Hitachi product consultant,
for more insight on this new option.
WHAT’S THE GRADE REFERENCE-READY OPTION ALL ABOUT?
If you choose Hitachi’s grade reference-ready option, sensor mounting brackets are
welded to the boom, arm, dogbone, counterweight and main frame of your excavator
at the factory. This reduces system installation time by half by eliminating your need
to grind, weld and re-paint a machine. The brackets are compatible with Topcon,
Trimble or Leica grade reference systems. This option is all about making it even
easier for Hitachi customers to get the most out of their machines.
WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF GRADE REFERENCE SYSTEMS?
Grade reference systems, available as 2D or 3D systems, allow operators to work
faster, consistently and accurately. Depending on the model, grade reference
systems can help prevent over-excavation and control material usage by guiding
an operator to the correct depth and slope and determining where the bucket teeth
are and should be. These systems can eliminate the need for an operator to exit
the cab to check grade and the need for placing and replacing stakes. Plus, they
can help you give more accurate estimates. All these benefits contribute to lower
operating costs and a better bottom line.
THE GRADE REFERENCE-READY OPTION IS AVAILABLE FOR WHICH
HITACHI MACHINES?
Currently, this factory option is available for the ZX210-6, ZX210LC-6, ZX250LC-6,

When Randy and
Kenny Robison buy
a Hitachi excavator,
it becomes
part of the family.

FAMILY
The Robison family is a close group. Randy and Kenny Robison
are not only brothers, they also run mining businesses together.
And every time they buy a Hitachi excavator, it becomes part of
the family, too—with each one getting named.
Randy, owner of Cedar Lake Mining, and Kenny
found their way into mining by following their
father’s footsteps.
“My daddy mined coal back in the ‘60s,”
Kenny said. “Back then, there weren’t any
regulations, so he just went out and found
a place to start mining coal.”

Randy and Kenny got into the mining business
in 1977.
“We started with a used bulldozer with a cable
blade and used wheel loaders,” Randy said.
“In the late ‘90s, we bought a used EX1100.
That was our first excavator and the first of
many Hitachi machines.”

Expanding the Family
The brothers are particular about the machines
they buy to work in their Alabama coal mines.
The last few years, they’ve been on a roll buying
EX3600-6 Hitachi excavators – they’re now up to five.
Flat Top Mine, the company’s newest mine, features
the newest Robison family member – one of the fleet
of EX3600-6 excavators called “Maddie.” Named
after Randy’s granddaughter, Maddie has been loading
three, 200-ton trucks since January.
Teddy Rhodes, who has more than 20 years of
operator experience, can’t say enough good things
about the excavator.
“It’s like a dream,” Rhodes said. “It’s really quick
for its size, and as far as other brands, there’s no
comparison. There’s not much I’ve come across that
this can’t handle.”
Meanwhile another EX3600-6, “Dusty,” has racked
up more than 16,000 hours at the company’s Reese’s
Branch Mine, loading three, 200-ton trucks. Reese’s
Branch Mine produces about 28,000-30,000 tons
of coal each month, mining at a depth of 180 feet
for the top seam and down to 230 feet to reach the
bottom seam.
Mining the Mountain
Kenny runs Sloan Mountain Mine, which is owned by
MS&R Equipment, a company the brothers co-own.
This is where “Gator,” an EX3600-6, is helping
produce about 28,000 tons of coal each month. Gator,
named in remembrance of a long-time employee, has
about 21,000 hours and loads three, 200-ton trucks
almost around the clock. The mine
currently runs two, nine-hour shifts.
Covering about 800 acres, Sloan
Mountain Mine follows three seams of
coal – the Upper Jefferson, the Lower
Jefferson and Black Creek, its primary
seam that sits at a depth of 210 feet.
Kenny’s son, Wade, also works at Sloan
Mountain Mine, operating an EX1900-6
named “Tater” that loads three, 100-ton
trucks.Wade has operated other
excavator brands and said Tater makes
the top of his list.
“I love this machine,” Wade said. “It’s got
about 16,000 hours and is really fast – it
almost outworks itself.”
Wade said he enjoys being part of the
family business.

“I like working for my dad. He can give me a hard time,
but I dish it back,” he laughed.
Holding a place of honor at Sloan Mountain Mine is
the Super EX1100, the Robison brothers’ first Hitachi
machine. Its productivity is proven with a staggering
36,000 hours of loyalty!
“Hitachi makes great machines that are reliable and hold
their value,” Kenny said. “Hitachi helps us stay profitable.”
Cedar Lake Mining and MS&R Equipment also have
strong support from the local Hitachi dealer, Warrior
Tractor. After all, Vann Neal, territory manager at Warrior
Tractor, orders the name decals for the machines.
“We’ve been pleased with the service that Warrior
Tractor provides,” Randy said. “They are dependable and
available whenever we need them. We’re looking forward
to adding more Hitachi machines to the family.”
