Atmospheric Corrosion
Resistant Steel
When used uncoated and in the case of exposure to bad weather, a
protective oxide layer develops on the steel surface. This is why this steel
is often called “the weathering steel”.
Properties
Applications
This steel combines the high strength of
S355 structural steel (EN10025) with
improved resistance to atmospheric
corrosion.
This steel has a wide range of applications:
architecture, sculpture, structural works,
industrial chimneys, freight wagon, silos, oil
rig applications, containers and pylons.
Advantages
When used uncoated, no maintenance is
needed and the material will not degrade
through corrosion.
When used uncoated and in the case of
exposure to bad weather, an oxide layer
develops on the steel surface, forming a
purplish-brown, finely grained patina which
bonds very strongly to the steel and
protects it. If the patina is damaged, the
steel oxidises again and thus repairing the
patina and maintaining the protective
barrier.
It is optimal for coating processes (painting,
metal linings, etc…). The protective patina
on components manufactured with this
material prevents rust propagation under
the paint layer. Experience has shown that
the adhesion of organic coatings on this
steel is superior to bonding on other carbon
steel grades.
The efficiency of the corrosion protection
depends to a large extent on the speed of
the patina formation.
For optimum patina formation, it can be
used in a non-confined environment, even
in the presence of sulphuric fumes.
However, it is strongly recommended not to
expose this steel to condensation or
repeated
soiling,
particularly
in
environments containing free chloride.
This steel can withstand higher
temperatures than ordinary building steel
and has excellent weldability with all the
usual welding processes, thanks to the low
carbon content and the fine grain of the
steel.

Recommendations for use
APPEARANCE OF THE PATINA
Outdoor use: The patina is formed naturally in the open air (over a period of three-four years).
Variations of appearance will be observed, depending on the weather condensation, evacuation
and evaporation conditions. After a few years, the patina will stabilise, even in an industrial,
sulphur containing or rural atmosphere. To ensure optimum patina formation and limit the
formation of rust streaks, the oxidation process can be accelerated artificially by first descaling
the surface (by sandblasting or shotblasting) and then subjecting to alternated periods of dry and
humid conditions.
Indoor use: To preserve the natural appearance of the material and at the same time avoid
powdering oxide deposits which may cause staining, the following steps are recommended:
– First remove all dusty deposits, stains or faults and then apply a chemical treatment to the
areas where corrosion has not yet developed.
– Clean the surface with water, brush and dry.
– Finally, apply a matt colourless UV resistant varnish.
Used painted: As the surface has a high reactivity, it is recommended to apply the first coat of
paint on a clean surface immediately alter pickling or sandblasting.
The presence of copper in the layer of oxides contributes to the formation of a strongly bonded,
elastic and compact patina on the surface in the course of the corrosion process.
The chromium and nickel contribute to the formation of basic insoluble alkaline sulphates which
will seal the pores of the oxide layer thereby protecting the metal from water and oxygen.
Silicon, and to the lesser extent phosphorous, also has a favourable effect on the corrosion
resistance.

Metal active gas welding (process No. N° 135, MAG)
The thin wires used for equivalent carbon steel grades can also be used; copperplated wires
deposit more copper on the surface of the welded zone, which contributes to the development
of the patina on the welds. The cored wires to be used are also the same as those used for the
equivalent carbon-manganese steel grades.

UD steels “hot rolled” (Direct Use)
Jacques Van den Berghe
The UD PRODUCTS (Direct Use products) range brings another concept in the
use of Hot Rolled Black steel in low thicknesses, reducing the limitations for its
DIRECT USE and eliminating the preparation steps.
The thickness reduction capability and control of the CSP mill together with
shape control possibilities of the pickling line allow to provide this UD PRODUCTS
range which stands out from classical flat hot rolled products.
These qualities are manufactured from more than 60% of high quality recycled
steel.
Properties
Guaranteed flatness in coil, Restricted and/or
asymmetric thickness tolerances, Minimum
thickness deviation along the length of the coil,
Good profile control, Improved surface aspect
due to final inspection, Coil ends cropping (head
and tail), Wide range of qualities available,
Steels suitable as substrates for coating
processes and transformations.
Advantages
> Higher output due to a reduction of material
loss, coil head and tail cropping is not necessary,
and a reduction of scrap in edge trimming
processes in slitting lines. Higher metres /
transformed tonnes ratio.
> Higher productivity due to the reduction of
de-coiling times and the threading to the lines,
the reduction of leveller setup times due to the
product reproducibility and the improvement
of the slitting line speed reliability allowing to
get the maximum working speed and making
the sheets stacking operation easier, improving
the final packing quality.
> Finished Product Reliability (Sheets and
Strip). These steels are virtually free of internal
stresses and coil break, have a minimised outof-squareness (perfect rectangle formed by
the ordered width and length dimensions can
be superimposed into the sheets delivered)
and an improved surface aspect.
These three factors are key for Cost Reduction
but other advantages can be added in the work
environment such as:

Dual Phase Steels
Dual Phase steels emerged from the market need for steels with high
tensile strength and good formability.
Properties
The term “Dual Phase” comes from the two
steel phases used to produce this grade of steel:
a basic fine matrix of ferrite, which provides
good formability and dispersed islands of
martensite which provide extraordinary
hardness.
Arcelormittal Sestao has developed this grade
at its own facilities and holds the patent for the
production of this grade using CSP technology.
Advantages
Dual Phase steels combine outstanding
mechanical properties (very high strength,
fatigue resistance and toughness) with good
formability and weldability .
The good formability is due to a low YS/TS
ratio, a high work hardening rate which is
maintained up to very high strains, and a high
fracture strain. This combination of strength
with formability and weldability is important,
particularly for the automotive industry. The
guaranteed high yield strength of these grades
makes it possible to achieve substantial weight
reduction through downgauging from 10 to
20%, while maintaining performance and safety.
Due to its low carbon value, this grade has
excellent weldability with all the usual welding
processes. When metal active gas welding
process is used, the maximum hardness of the
welded area never exceeds 300HV regardless
which parameters are used.
Weld quality is equivalent to Level B of BS EN
25817/ISO 5817. Recommended products are:
– Welding wires: G3Si1 NF EN 440
– Protective gas: Ar + 1% O2 + 3% CO2
Dual-phase steel products are characterised by
high tensile strength, an improved formability,
high capacity to absorb crash energy and ability
to resist fatigue making this steel particularly
suitable for use in structural and reinforcement
applications.
Such properties contribute towards the
mechanical strength of components, under the
aspect of reduced weight.
Applications
Dual phase steel features an excellent cold
forming and drawing capability. This steel can
be used with current equipment just by
optimising machine adjustments. Forming loads
will increase about 20% compared to the same
thickness in conventional micro alloy steels.
When used for parts under dynamic loading
and in order to make the best of the benefits of
this steel, its forming diagram should be
carefully analysed, particularly its fatigue
resistance.

High Strength Low Alloy Steels
(HSLA)
HSLA steels allow achieving substantial weight reduction through
downgauging.
Properties
High-strength low alloy steels (HSLA) have
high ductility, controlled internal purity, fine
grain structure, and a low carbon content.
Advantages
High-strength low alloy steels combine the
following:
– Outstanding mechanical properties:
• Very high strength
• Fatigue resistance
• Toughness
– Good formability
– Good weldability
– Galvanising aptitude class 1
The guaranteed high yield strength of these
grades makes it possible to achieve substantial
weight reduction through downgauging, while
maintaining performance and safety. These
steels are therefore frequently used to replace
structural steels where weight reduction is
required.
Applications
High-strength low alloy steels have a wide
range of Industrial applications such as
building (cranes, safety barriers, lighting units
etc.), in profiling processes (shelving and
tubes), and transport (earth-moving
equipment, towing machinery, agricultural
and railway machinery etc.).
The Automotive sector is also a major
consumer of this range for interior structure
applications (chassis, reinforcements, seat
components etc.).

Ultra-Thin Steels Range
(UF Steels Range)
Ultra-Thin steels range (UF Steels) brings a new steel concept that
represents a step forward in the traditional hot rolled process. This
process is similar to the classic cold rolled process. ArcelorMittal Sestao
Ultra Thin steels transfer their technological advantages straight to our
customers.
Properties
Restricted thickness tolerances, minimum
thickness deviation along the length of the coil,
good profile control, uniformity in mechanical
properties, improved surface quality thanks to
the picking process, wide range of grades and
suitability for galvanising (class 1).
Advantages
These steels are suitable to be used in
applications to substitute cold rolled material,
particularly in the high strength micro alloy
range (HSLA).
Applications
These steels are used for a wide range of
applications. In the automotive sector for
internal structural parts, profiled components
and precision tubes. In the shelving and building
sector for horizontal parts. In the industrial
sector in general for a wide range of flat parts
(such as doors) and formed components
(radiators, metallic furniture…).
Very good uniformity
properties along the coil.
ArcelorMittal Sestao´s offer
The capability of thickness reduction and
control of the CSP mill together with the
shape control possibilities of the tension
leveller located on the picking line allows us to
provide this range of “UF” products which
stand out from classical flat hot rolled material.
UF steels are supplied pickled but
exceptionally they can be supplied mill
finished.
There are 15 qualities available and 1 under
development. These steels are continuously
being developed to fulfil our customer’s
expectations.
Thickness range vary from 1.00 mm to 1.99
mm depending on the requested grade (please
see tables below).
in
mechanical
Chemical properties that guarantee all
transformation processes (welding, coating…)
Thickness tolerances: 1/2, 1/3 EN 10051
(For more restricted tolerances please
contact us).
Three levels of flatness guaranteed in coils:
– Normal: As per table 7 EN 10051
– Restricted: 1/2 EN 10051
– Special: 1/3 EN 10051
With skin pass process (under request) it is
possible to gain surface roughness and a finish
that allow semi-visible applications.
