DallasCEO MEDIA KIT 2007 MISSION STATEMENT DallasCEO introduces Dallas business leaders to one another. It celebrates the entrepreneurial tradition of Dallas, the men and women who take risks, who create jobs, who better the city. DallasCEO has become required reading for top executives who want to know more about their peers and to make a difference in our city. Business leaders built Dallas, and business leaders make Dallas. This city thrives on their energy, their passion, and their creativity. Dallas prospers on entrepreneurial spirit, that encourages innovation, that allows people to fail and pick themselves up again, that relishes competition and loves enterprise. As a result, we created DallasCEO. WICK ALLISON EDITOR-IN-CHIEF About Us D MAGAZINE BACKGROUND For more than 30 years D Magazine has been deeply committed to strengthening the fabric of Dallas through award-winning editorial, signature events, media partnerships, and charity sponsorships. D Magazine distributes more than 72,000 magazines monthly. 43,000 are delivered to our loyal, affluent subscribers from Highland Park to Plano. More than 13,000 copies are delivered to luxury hotels like The Mansion at Turtle Creek and Four Seasons Dallas at Las Colinas. D Magazine has become one of the best-selling magazines per capita in the United States on local newsstands. D Magazine Partners produces 12 magazines and 43 issues each year. D Magazine is more than an expression of the community it serves. D Magazine is a Dallas icon. D MAGAZINE LAUNCHES DallasCEO In May 2006, D Magazine unveiled the first issue of DallasCEO. DallasCEO is a monthly, sophisticated, business magazine targeting Dallas’ elite business leaders. It celebrates the vision of Dallas’ founders, promotes the people who create jobs, and enshrines the famous Dallas entrepreneurial spirit. Key Players PHYLLIS COLE SPENCE PUBLISHER PHYLLIS COLE SPENCE is the associate publisher of D Magazine and publisher of DallasCEO. She has been in Dallas since graduating from The University of Missouri–Columbia in 1987. After taking a year hiatus to work in London, Phyllis launched her advertising career as a sales representative with D, leaving in May of 1998 to accept a position at The Wall Street Journal. As a display advertising sales representative, she doubled the annual revenue of her account list to more than $10 million in just two years. She moved over to the interactive edition of The Wall Street Journal and lived in the online world for almost two years. During her tenure, she worked closely with some of the largest companies in Dallas—ExxonMobil, American Airlines, EDS, Texas Instruments, and Nokia. She returned to D Magazine in August 2001 in her current role as associate publisher and was named publisher of D Magazine’s ancillary publications: D Weddings, D Beauty, D Fashion, D Estates, Dallas/Fort Worth Medical Directory, Private School Handbook, and Eating and Drinking. ADAM McGILL EXECUTIVE EDITOR ADAM McGILL graduated cum laude from Southern Methodist University in 1994 as a member of the Golden Key National Honors Society and with Departmental Distinction, his Bachelor of Arts degree in English with Creative Writing Specialization. He began his publishing career as an editorial assistant at D in 1996. Two years later, an alternative entertainment weekly called The Met lured him away. He became that publication’s editor-in-chief before Travelocity Magazine hired him as an assistant editor. He became that magazine’s editor-in-chief before returning to the fold at D in 2001, this time as a senior editor. As such, Adam managed freelance writers and wrote stories himself on subjects as varied as celebrities, business leaders, architecture, and more, winning a Katie Award in the process. In January 2006, Adam became the founding executive editor of DallasCEO. JESSICA JONES MANAGING EDITOR Despite her Southern roots, managing editor and frequent contributor JESSICA JONES was always drawn to the bright lights of the East Coast. Baton Rouge-born and Carrollton-bred, she ventured to Boston for her undergraduate studies where, between lectures and libations, she discovered a love for the Red Sox and a distaste for freezing temperatures. After graduating cum laude from Boston University’s College of Communication with a degree in journalism, she returned to Dallas where an internship with D Magazine led to her current position at DallasCEO. During her tenure with the D family, she’s written about robots, bikers, cow manure, and, of course, CEOs of companies both big and small. TODD JOHNSON DESIGN DIRECTOR TODD JOHNSON is a self-professed magazine junkie. “I did a stint with an ad agency,” he confesses, “but it didn’t take.” Happily, as D Magazine Partner’s design director, Todd oversees the design and creative vision of more than 20 publications—including D, D Home, and DallasCEO—and gets to work with some of the world’s most talented photographers and illustrators. Todd’s work has been honored by the Dallas Press Club, the City and Regional Magazine Association, Columbia University, and Folio Magazine. Prior to DallasCEO, we struggled getting our message directly to our target audience—CEOs and CFOs of local companies. DallasCEO has been invaluable in allowing us to craft and deliver our message directly to this audience. Our name recognition is much higher since beginning our relationship with DallasCEO. It feels great to hear ‘I saw your ad in DallasCEO this month.’ ” —JAMES R.
