This Friday we celebrate students who achieved the scores of proficient and advanced on the STAR test and recognized students who showed improvement in their scores in Language Arts and Mathematics. We honor four students who achieved a perfect score in Mathematics and Science. However, test scores and striving to achieve the 850 API score are only a part of what Mark Twain is all about. More important than tests, grades or an 850 API is striving to build the character of our students to be good citizens, to be respectful and compassionate to each other. This process of character building begins with PRIDE. PRIDE is not something I brought here because it sounded catchy or cool. It has significant meaning to me. It is building quality traits that our children will need to be successful in life. Let’s take a closer look at what PRIDE means: P is for polite: being nice to one another, lending a helping hand to someone in need, to put a smile on a person’s face that might look sad. R is for respect: to treat others how you yourself want to be treated; to show compassion and interest in someone. I is for integrity: being a person of your word, to be reliable and someone that can be counted on to do what is right. D is for discipline: having self- control over ones actions and words; having the strength to say no and not giving into peer pressure. E is for excellence: striving to do your best in all things; wanting to improve and never quitting until you achieve what you want. There is nothing more satisfying to me as a principal than seeing and working with students exhibiting the qualities of PRIDE. Whether or not it watching students settle issues between them, having the integrity to admit fault and being sorry for what you did, and the student who is smiling because they just earned an A on a test. All these students have one thing in common, PRIDE. They not only know what PRIDE means, they EMBRACE IT AND LIVE IT!!! BADGER PRIDE Thank you, Mr. Triance Mark Twain P.R.I.D.E. means more than just having a passion and love for your school. School PRIDE is about demonstrating character as an ambassador of MTE and Angels Camp. How can I help my child at home? All students should be reading at home between 15 and 45 minutes a night. They should be reading books they enjoy and find relaxing. Most importantly the books I want read at home should be at their reading level. So turn off the television and computer, pull up a chair and listen to a great story read by your son or daughter. By the way, one of my favorite authors is Roland Dahl who was the author of Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach. Good Stuff!!! Thank you, Mr. Triance
