News From Jennifer Nate's News Notes In the month of August we focus on ?relationships? and so it is fitting that we have our annual, exciting, football game against the Eden Prairie High School Football Team on August 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. here at our Community. After the football game, our team members will have a hot dog eating competition against the football players. This annual event is a testament to both The Colony and the Eden Prairie High School Football Team?s strong commitment to this wonderful city. Please plan to attend and cheer us on as last year we won the football game and the hot dog eating contest with the help of all of you cheering This great relationship between us and the football team is one of many we have in the community. To help improve your relationships, I suggest the following tips. First, engage in meaningful communication with those you wish to foster meaningful relationships. Indeed, without heartfelt communication, relationships cannot thrive. NEW RESIDENT WELCOME Second, related to the first, be a good listener. Being able to actively listen is a hallmark of being able to effectively communicate. Third, be honest. Ultimately, if a relationship is going to thrive, the foundation of it must be built on honesty and trust. As always I leave you with a quote: " A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside." - Denis Waitley Jennifer Kuhn Director of Community Operations We give a heartfelt Colony welcome to: Jean Kimrey, Apt. 206 Terese Miller, Apt. 330 Grayce Newstrom, Apt. 227 Chef's Corner Health & Wellbeing How Do You Spell Love? The Webster Dictionary definition for relationships - ?The way in which two or more people, groups, countries, etc., talk to, behave toward, and deal with each other?. us live fuller lives. Relationships aren?t going to be perfect all the time, but for the most part, a good relationship makes us feel secure, happy, loved, respected and free to be ourselves. So how important are relationships to our health and well-being? Do any of you remember the movie ?Cast Away? with Tom Hanks? He was stranded on an island, completely alone, and drew a face on a volleyball that he named Wilson just so he would have ?someone? to talk to. And even though it was just a movie, it really does illustrate how important relationships are to us and that our brains are hardwired to form them. I think Winnie the Pooh says it best? Relationships, and the quality of our relationships, have an enormous impact on our physical health. Healthy relationships build self-esteem, improve mental and emotional health and help May your hearts be filled with love and light, Holly Busse Active Life Manager August Birthdays Terese Miller, August 1 Charles Doidge, August 12 Miyoko Kawanoue, August 22 Mary Westgard, August1 Dolores Oliver, August 12 Loretta Anderson, August 24 Charles Schwanke August 4 Audrey Addison, August 15 Marie Hitsley, August 24 Judy Gerszewski, August 8 Grace Noel, August 15 Stephanie Jakel, August 9 Walter Maher, August 18 Peter Steuerwald, August 10 Patricia Kirsch, August 19 Pauline Jorgenson, August 25 Martin Thiede, August 28 Ralph Johnson, August 31 If you think about life's different occasions, food is most likely at the center of each one. We use food to mark special occasions, such as birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, graduations and weddings. Food is prepared for the special family members and friends in our lives who need extra help while recovering from an illness or after having a baby. Food also plays a significant role in our daily lives: having breakfast with the kids before school, a lunch meeting with co-workers, or dinner with our spouse. No matter what our cultural background is, the preparation and eating of food is something we all have in common with one another. But food is much more than nourishment; it is the vehicle through which we communicate sentiments, express our creativity and create memories. And it is in the sharing of food with others that keeps us connected. Food gets people talking; it facilitates conversation and debates, prompts people to ask each other questions and acts as the medium by which we strengthen and nurture our relationships. Gathering around the table is also a way we can show others hospitality, preserve traditions, and create memories; it is one of life's greatest joys. Tyler Bonine Dining Director Team Member of the Month - Coleman Atchley It is a great honor to be able to announce Coleman Atchley as our August Employee of the Month! Better yet, I returned safely from Europe and was discharged at age 20 on July 3, 1946. For a kid who had never shot anything bigger than a BB- gun, it was quite an awakening to handle the firepower of all the weapons in the arsenal of the US Infantry, but fortunately we did not have to use them against the Germans, who surrendered in early May 1945. The Great Minnesota State Fair has been a joyful tradition for all but 4 years of my life. Hard to believe that a 10 year old could enjoy a day of hot dogs ? (5 cents) or a Coke and an ice cream cone for a quarter and two street car tokens. Our family could drive to a high point south of the fairgrounds to enjoy the nightly fireworks, adding our own ?ooh?s & ahh?s?. School started after Labor Day and we didn?t get our first long holiday until the end of November for the teacher?s convention. The Arboretum is ?in between? right now. It will climax in October with it?s unbelievable variety of fall colors, but will quickly offer the benefit of low humidity and scarce mosquitoes. Fall will come soon enough. Meanwhile enjoy the beauty of summer. The Colony Happenings It was another perfect day for a boat ride and some fishing on Lake Riley. We were fortunate to get another opportunity to enjoy an afternoon on the lake. Jean Hartman not only caught the largest sunfish of the day, but also the smallest? not much larger than a minnow. It was a fantastic day with ?Let?s Go Fishing? and we are already looking forward to another chance to fish next year. Let's Go Fishing! Pauline & her younger brother, Kenneth grew up on the family farm near St. James MN. She said the school was a country school, and at times the entire population was as small as 10 students for all grades. She sometimes rode her white pony ?Prince? to school. She participated in the Church choir, and played tenor saxophone in the high school band. After high school graduation, Pauline was employed by Scherr Micrometer Manufacturing Company. Her husband, Ervin, also, from St. James, was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during his service in World War II, and they married in 1946. After the war Ervin went to college on the GI Bill where he studied air conditioning and refrigerator maintenance. Linda Divinski Active Life Manager EXCITING NEWS: FAMILY PROGRAMMING The Colony is excited to announce a new program available to our families. He worked for IDS properties where one of his many duties was to ensure a cool room temperature for the many large heat producing IBM computers in the new IDS Center. Pauline worked as a teller at First Federal Savings and Loan, and also in the accounting office at Daytons until she retired. They had two sons, Wayne and Warren. The family enjoyed summer activities at their cabin. Ervin loved the lake and wildlife, and the boys especially liked to water ski. After retirement they traded the cabin for an RV and traveled all over the country ? sometimes in the east, and sometimes California and the southwest states. Eventually, they purchased a winter home in Arizona and a condo in Bloomington. Pauline was very active with her high school alumni association, and planned many reunions over the years. She still enjoys researching her family genealogy and history. Pauline?s brother, Kenneth lives in Burnsville. Son, Warren lives in New Jersey with his wife, Pat. Son, Wayne, and his wife, Carol, live in Eden Prairie. Wayne is a Civil War History expert and wrote a book called, ?Every Man Did His Duty?. Wayne and Carol's son, Michael, resides in Tokyo, Japan. Their daughter, Lindsay, resides in Eden Prairie with her husband Mark and their children, Kai, (3) and twin 1-1/2 year daughters Anabella and Arianna. Vicky Willcox Manager of Community Relations
