Night of January 16
When Hofstra Entertainment Executive
Producer/Director Bob Spiotto was searching for
a play from 1935 (as part of Hofstra’s 75th
Anniversary Celebration), he came across a littleknown play called “Night of January 16th.” It was
written by Ayn Rand, is very rarely performed,
and has an interesting twist: members of the
audience play an integral role in the outcome.
The play deals with issues of a man's ability to

How long have you lived on Long Island?
I have lived on Long Island for 34 years. I grew up in Greenlawn
and recently returned there.
What do you like most about living here?
I like having so many of my favorite things accessible. One day
you can be at the beach, the next hiking at Caumsett State Park,
and then you can spend the weekend in Manhattan. I also like
the diversity of Long Island – the people, the neighborhoods, the
activities.
Tell me about your job.
January will mark four years that I have been working at the
Long Island Progressive Coalition. I am the lead organizer, as well
as the Statewide Campaign Coordinator for our Early Childhood
Education Campaign. I have always believed in helping those
most in need and teaching disenfranchised people to advocate
for themselves, so working for an organization that focuses on
social, racial, and economic justice is the most rewarding career
I could ever have imagined. My main focus is working on legislation and policies that will ensure every child is ready for
kindergarten and college. We accomplish this by working in
coalition with other organizations and by bringing together parents and community members to fight for education reform.
And you still find time to do volunteer work.
I volunteer on Tuesday nights in Huntington Station with Food
Not Bombs, one of the largest, fastest growing and effective
food distribution programs on Long Island. On Sundays, I volunteer my time singing at the youth mass and co-running the
youth ministry program at St. Francis Church in Greenlawn. I

ty where moral decay is ever prevalent, as well as
issues of love, loyalty and betrayal. The entire
play takes place in a courtroom and is centered
on a murder trial. For each performance, members of the audience are picked to take on the
role of jury members. Depending on whether the
"jury" finds the defendant guilty or not guilty, the
play will have different endings. Another unique
feature of the play is that it does not state what
the true events were on the night of January
16th, which forces the actors to decide how
much of their character's testimony is actually
true. Since several witnesses contradict each
other, it is almost certain that some of them are
lying. Legal commentary/discussion by attorneys
and a judge from the Nassau County Bar
Association will follow each performance.
Performances take place at Hofstra’s Monroe
Lecture Center, South Campus on Friday, January
14 and 21 at 8 p.m., Saturday, January 15 and

Vanishing Mother
Long Island Author Pens Haunting Debut Novel
Up from the Blue
by Susan Henderson
320 pages. HarperCollins. $13.99.
Long Island writer Susan Henderson grew up outside
Washington, DC. Her father was a high-ranking official in the
Department of Defense. As director of DARPA (Defense
Advanced Research Projects Agency), Susan’s father worked on the Star
Wars and other missile defense programs, as well as ARPANET, the forerunner of the Internet. The father in Susan Henderson’s stunning debut
novel is also a high-ranking Pentagon official.
Up From the Blue is a haunting, heart-wrenching story about Tillie Harris,
who was eight years old in 1975 when her family moved to a suburb of
Washington, D.C. Tillie was sent to stay with a woman who worked for
her father while the rest of her family made the long road trip to their new
home. When Tillie was reunited with her family, she made a startling discovery: her mother had vanished. In their new suburban neighborhood,
where neighbors kept to themselves, and
secrets stayed behind closed doors, Tillie and
her older brother were left to fend for themselves. Questions about her mother’s whereabouts remained unanswered.
As Tillie thought about her mother, she
remembered, not the crippling depression
that Mara suffered from, but her colorful
clothing, her impulsivity, and the joyful times
they shared dressing up, dancing, and laughing. The 1970s was a pivotal time, where traditional
female roles were rapidly changing, and the author
portrays this brilliantly in the character development of
Tillie’s parents.
“Tillie’s father wants to do the right thing but doesn’t know how,” says Susan Henderson. “So he puts
everything in a context that he is familiar with, namely
the military. When he gives an order, he expects everyone to listen. Tillie’s mother, on the other hand, provides emotion and color that he doesn’t have. It’s like
in The Wizard of Oz. Tillie’s dad is in black and white,
while her mother is over-colorized and weird.”
Like so many women of that era, Mara tries to break
out of her mold, but with her manic personality, everything is done to excess. “She’s like a balloon that will
fly away unless someone holds the string,” says Susan.
“If she had had help, she could have been a really
interesting person. Something in her died after she

married into a military family. Her passion wasn’t being spoken to anymore.”
Tillie misses Mara more than ever as Christmas approaches: I had not
seen my mother through summer or fall, and when winter came, filling
our swimming pool with snow and dead branches, it seemed unbearable
that we’d spend Christmas without her. Christmas had been Momma’s
specialty—a time when she decorated every room of the house with a
now globe or a tiny Christmas tree or a tea towel with Santa Claus on it.
All of our ornaments were handmade. She cut the patterns from felt, then
sewed detailed faces with shiny embroidery thread.
“I started writing the book six years ago,” says Susan. “I had written
about this recurring character who became Tillie in several short stories.
But then I started to put together the stories to see if there was a larger
story. I’m more comfortable writing short stories but the story could not
be contained in short stories, so I ripped apart the stories and started from
scratch several times.”
“Writing a novel was deeply satisfying in a way I was not expecting,”
shares the author. “There’s a wonderful freedom to take side trips to
explore minor characters that you didn’t have space to write about in a
short story.” After a year and a half of rejection letters from publishers, the
book finally sold in July 2009.
As an avid blogger, Susan Henderson shares her literary experiences
online with other writers. “Writing can be a lonely profession,” she says.
“And you can feel like the biggest failure in the world if you think you’re
the only one with a drawer full of rejection letters or the only one who’s
worked and worked on a story only to discover it wasn’t salvageable. This
long road toward creating a book you think could be published is just easier to walk when you’re in the company of others who
understand.”
That was the impetus behind her blog, LitPark. She
wanted to create a place where writers could hang out
with others who understood the joys and frustrations
and obsessions that come with trying to create and sell
a piece of writing.
She is also a frequent blogger at The Nervous
Breakdown, where she documented the ups and
downs of writing, editing, and selling her novel. “The
series is really just meant to give company to those in
the thick of the process, which can be so frustrating
and dispiriting. I wanted to provide some sense of
hope—that what looks like a long journey of failure
and rejection and doors slamming in your face can lead
you to that publisher who says ‘yes.’”
In this case, “yes” has led to a beautifully written,
Susan Henderson compelling tale that is not to be missed. ◆

Women’s Health Update
Do Men and Women Feel Jealousy Differently?
When South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford was caught red-handed
returning from a tryst with his mistress last June, he told the Associated
Press that he had met his “soul mate.” His choice of words seemed to suggest that having a deep emotional and spiritual connection with another
woman somehow made his sexual infidelity to his wife less tawdry.
What he didn’t understand is that most women view emotional infidelity as
worse, not better, than sexual betrayal. Research has documented that most
men become much more jealous about sexual infidelity than they do about
emotional infidelity. Women are the opposite, and this is true all over the world.
The prevailing theory is that the difference has evolutionary origins: Men
learned over eons to be hyper-vigilant about sex because they can never be
absolutely certain they are the father of a child, while women are much more
concerned about having a partner who is committed to raising a family.
New research now suggests an alternative explanation. Pennsylvania State
University psychological scientists doubted the prevailing evolutionary explanation because there is a conspicuous subset of men who, like most
women, find emotional betrayal more distressing than sexual infidelity. Why
would this be? The researchers suspected that
it might have to do with trust and emotional
attachment.
Some people — men and women alike — are
more secure in their attachments to others,
while others tend to be more dismissive of the
need for close attachment relationships.
Psychologists see this compulsive self-reliance
as a defensive strategy — protection against
deep-seated feelings of vulnerability. The
researchers hypothesized that these individuals
would tend to be concerned with the sexual
aspects of relationships rather than emotional
intimacy.
Similar to earlier studies examining sex differences in jealousy, the researchers asked men
and women which they would find more distressing, sexual infidelity or emotional infidelity. Participants also completed
additional assessments including a standard and well- validated measure of
attachment style in romantic relationships.
Findings confirmed the scientists’ hypotheses. As the researchers report in
Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science,
those with a dismissing attachment style — those who prize their autonomy in relationships over commitment — were much more upset about sexual infidelity than they were about emotional infidelity. And conversely,
those securely attached in relationships — including securely attached men
— were much more likely to find emotional betrayal more upsetting.

Spots, Wrinkles and Skin Tags, Oh My!
Over time, skin suffers from wear and tear, and wrinkles, spots and
growths begin to appear. While we may not be thrilled about these
changes, it is reassuring to know that most of them aren’t anything to worry
about. The Mayo Clinic Health Letter explains some of these normal changes

and possible treatment options.
Harmless growths include:
• Age or liver spots. These flat, brown areas, also called solar lentigos,
typically occur on the hands, back and face. Using a topical retinoid cream
— often in conjunction with bleaching cream and a mild topical steroid —
may gradually fade an age spot.
• Skin tags. These flesh-colored growths protrude from the skin, often on
a stalk. They’re often found on the neck or in the armpits. A doctor can
remove them with surgical scissors, an electrical device or liquid nitrogen.
• Cherry angiomas. These small, smooth, cherry-red spots are commonly found on the torso. They range from pinhead size to 1/4 inch across. They
can be removed with a laser, liquid nitrogen or an electrical device.
• Seborrheic keratoses. These brown, black or pale growths look waxy,
as if they were dripped on the skin by a candle. They usually appear on the
face, chest, shoulders and back, often in multiples. Their size ranges from
1/4 inch to 1 inch across. They can be removed with a simple surgical procedure or with liquid nitrogen.
The cost of removing any of these harmless spots — considered cosmetic
procedures — may not be covered by insurance.
Not all skin spots are harmless, of course. Skin cancer can look similar to a
harmless spot or growth. Any spots that bleed and don’t heal should be
examined by a doctor. Other symptoms to share with your doctor include
itchiness, pain or a changing outline, color or appearance.
Obesity — Mild or Severe — Raises Kidney-Stone Risk
Obesity, in general, nearly doubles a person’s risk of developing kidney
stones. But the degree of obesity doesn’t appear to increase or decrease the
risk one way or the other, according to a new study from Johns Hopkins
University that was published recently in the Journal of Urology.
“The common thinking was that as weight rises, kidney-stone risk rises as
well, but our study refutes that,” says study leader Brian R. Matlaga, M.D.,
assistant professor of urology at the Johns Hopkins University School of
Medicine. “Whether someone is mildly obese or morbidly obese, the risk for
getting kidney stones is the same.”
Over the past decade, several studies have shown a strong connection
between obesity and kidney-stone disease. However, as obesity continues to
increase worldwide, Matlaga and his colleagues wondered whether different subcategories of obesity, ranging from mildly to morbidly obese, presented different risks.
To answer the question, researchers used a national insurance-claims database to identify 95,598 people who had completed a health-risk-assessment
form with information about their body mass index (BMI), a measure of
body fat calculated by dividing weight by height, and a general indicator of
underweight, healthy weight or overweight. The database, which spanned
a five-year period from 2002 to 2006, also included information indicating
whether these individuals had been diagnosed with kidney stones.
Using a definition of obesity as having a BMI greater than 30 kg/m2
(which, in English measurements, corresponds to a 5-foot-tall person weighing 153 pounds, or a 6-foot-tall person weighing 221 pounds), the
researchers calculated the incidence of kidney stones in people who were
non-obese and in those who were obese. Among the non-obese individuTo advertise: 516-505-0555 x1 or ads@liwomanonline.com

als, 2.6 percent were diagnosed during the study period with kidney stones,
compared with 4.9 percent of the obese individuals. When the investigators
arranged those in the obese group by their BMIs, they found that the
increased risk remained constant, regardless of how heavy the individuals
were.
Matlaga says he and his colleagues aren’t sure why obese people are more
at risk for kidney stones, though metabolic or endocrine factors unique to
obesity are likely reasons, along with dietary factors such as a high-salt diet.
They plan to look at these potential risk factors in future studies.
receive it if their surgeons were highly involved in the decision process. We
need to do a better job of educating both patients and physicians regarding the benefits of radiation after mastectomy in certain circumstances, and
we need to encourage physicians to help their patients as they make these
important decisions,” Jagsi says.
In patients with strong indications for radiation after mastectomy, their
risk of the cancer coming back in the chest wall or surrounding areas can
exceed 30 percent. This is reduced by two-thirds if the patient undergoes
radiation treatments, and overall survival is improved according to Jagsi.
Radiation After Mastectomy Is Underused
Cardiovascular Risks of Early Menopause
While radiation therapy is common after breast-conserving surgery, it’s
much less frequent after mastectomy, even among women for whom it
would have a clear life-saving benefit, according to a new study from the
University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. Results appear online
in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
The researchers surveyed 2,260 women in the Los Angeles and Detroit
metropolitan areas who had been diagnosed with breast cancer between
2005 and 2007. Women were identified through the Surveillance
Epidemiology and End Results registry.
Participants were asked about their breast-cancer diagnosis and treatment, including whether
they received radiation therapy. Women who
have particularly large tumors or cancer in four
or more of their nearby lymph nodes are recommended to have radiation after mastectomy,
they note.
The study found that among patients who
should receive radiation therapy according to
medical guidelines, 95 percent of those who
had a lumpectomy went on to receive radiation, but only 78 percent of those who had a
mastectomy received radiation. Among women
for whom radiation is less clearly beneficial, 80
percent of the lumpectomy patients had radiation while only 46 percent of the mastectomy patients did.
“A substantial number of breast-cancer patients are being under-treated.
One in five women with strong indications for radiation after mastectomy
failed to receive it. Radiation can be a life-saving treatment,” says study
author Reshma Jagsi, M.D., assistant professor of radiation oncology at the
U-M Medical School.
The fact that 95 percent of patients who had lumpectomy received radiation in the two metropolitan areas studied indicates that “we can do better
than we are currently doing for the selected mastectomy patients who also
need radiation. More attention needs to be paid to radiation after mastectomy,” Jagsi says.
The study also found that doctor participation strongly influenced which
women received radiation treatment. Patients who reported their surgeon
was involved in the decision to receive radiation were more likely to receive
it than were patients whose doctors were less involved.
“Even patients who wanted to avoid radiation therapy were very likely to
Women who go through early menopause appear to have more than
twice the risk of having a heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular- disease event later in life than do women who do not experience early
menopause, a new study indicates.
Early menopause was defined as going through menopause before age
46, either naturally or surgically through removal of both ovaries.
“It is important for women to know that early menopause is a potential
risk factor for cardiovascular disease — the number one killer of American
women. They can then work harder to improve their modifiable risk factors,
such as high cholesterol and blood pressure, by exercising and following a
healthy diet,” says the study’s principal author, Melissa Wellons, M.D., a fellow at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
Previous research found a link between early menopause and cardiovascular disease in mostly white and European populations, according to
Wellons, but the new study had a multiethnic representation of women. Of
the more than 2,500 participants, about 40 percent were white, 25 percent
were African-American, 22 percent were Hispanic and 13 percent were
Chinese-American.
At the beginning of the study in July 2000, the women participants were
ages 45 to 84. Nearly 28 percent of the women reported that they had
experienced early menopause; 446 women had natural menopause and
247 had surgical menopause. Women not yet past menopause were included in the group that did not have early menopause. Follow-up tracked
whether participants had a cardiovascular-disease event, which included a
heart attack, non-fatal cardiac arrest (a suddenly stopped heart), angina
(chest pain due to narrowed or blocked arteries), probable angina followed
by angioplasty or bypass surgery, a stroke or death due to stroke, heart
attack or other cardiovascular disease.
No one had any such event before age 55. After that, women who had
early menopause were more likely to have had a cardiovascular- disease
event than women who had not gone through menopause before age 46.
Even when the researchers’ statistical analysis controlled for current or
previous use of hormone-replacement therapy or for major cardiovascular
risk factors, it did not change the results. Early menopause remained a risk
factor on its own, although it is unclear why, Wellons says.
“Our study is observational. Therefore, we cannot conclude that early
menopause somehow causes future cardiovascular disease,” Wellons says.
“However, our findings do support the possible use of age at menopause
as a marker of future heart and vascular disease risk.”
If you’ve gone through early menopause, this study might be something

Your Physical Health and the Health of Your Relationships
People who feel insecure about their attachments to others might be
at higher risk for cardiovascular problems than those who feel secure in
their relationships, according to a new study published by the American
Psychological Association.
“This is the first study to examine adult attachment and a range of specific health conditions,” says lead author Lachlan A. McWilliams, Ph.D.,
of Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Canada.
He and a colleague examined data on 5,645 people ages 18 to 60 and
found that people who felt insecure in relationships or who avoided getting close to others might be at a higher risk of developing several
chronic diseases.
“Much of the health research regarding attachment has focused on
pain conditions, so we were initially surprised that some of our strongest findings
involved conditions related to the cardiovascular system,” says McWilliams.
Participants rated themselves on three
attachment styles – secure, avoidant and
anxious. Secure attachment refers to feeling
able to get close to others and being willing
to have others depend on you. Avoidant
attachment refers to difficulty getting close
to others and trusting others. Anxious
attachment refers to the tendency to worry
about rejection, feel needy and find others
are reluctant to get close to you.
The participants answered a questionnaire
about their histories of arthritis, chronic
back or neck problems, frequent or severe
headaches, other forms of chronic pain,
seasonal allergies, stroke and heart attack.
They also disclosed whether a doctor had
told them they had heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, chronic
lung disease, diabetes or high blood sugar, ulcers, epilepsy, seizures or
cancer. They were questioned regarding their history of psychological
disorders as well.
After adjusting for other variables that could account for these health
conditions, the authors found that avoidant attachment was associated
with conditions defined primarily by pain, such as frequent or severe
headaches. Anxious attachment was positively associated with a wider
range of health conditions, including some defined primarily by pain and
several involving the cardiovascular system, such as stroke, heart attack
or high blood pressure.
Could improving our relationships — and feeling more secure in them
— affect our health in concrete ways? These findings seem to point in
that direction. It seems the more we learn about the mind-body connection, the more important connections we find. ◆

Rosanna Scotto
The
Queen
of
New
York
News
“She has gone
through various
generations and
it says a great
deal about her in
a day and age
when anchors
come and go.”
by Joanna Pompilio
“Let me tell you what happened, it’s really a very funny story,” is how most of
Rosanna Scotto’s stories begin. Whether on the air as co-anchor of Fox 5’s Good Day
New York, working the room at her family’s New York restaurant Fresco by Scotto, or
just sitting around chatting, the television veteran’s knack for animated storytelling is
always apparent.
After nearly 30 years in broadcast news, it is no surprise the New York icon can tell
a good tale. What would surprise her viewers? The Brooklyn native and Southampton
resident feels she is finally coming into her own, professionally and personally. “I have
to say, I really feel that it’s finally, now, coming together,” quips the Catholic University
grad. “When you are going through it, there are ups and downs, so many valleys and
so many peaks. You try to be even tempered. You try to be professional and you don’t
bring your problems to work. I really feel now, at this stage, I hope I’m not jinxing it,
but everything is coming together – finally.”
The three time Emmy winner did not see herself becoming a television veteran or
successful New York restaurateur as a young girl in Dyker Heights. “Growing up I
wanted to be a mom; I wanted to be a good wife. I am still working on those things,”
muses the mother of two. “But I have a wonderful career and a family business. I am
so grateful to have all of that in my life and have a family that is happy and healthy.
And you realize as you get older how fortunate you are to be able to do something
that you really love.”
What she never expected to love, was being a part of her family’s restaurant Fresco
by Scotto. The unexpected brainchild of her mother, Marion, started as a ploy to lure
Scotto’s two brother’s back to New York after they had already begun working at a
restaurant in Los Angeles. 17 years later, the 52nd street Manhattan eatery has been
dubbed the “NBC Commissary” due to the volume of TV personalities from the network that frequent the Italian gastronomic sensation. Even the late, legendary New
York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was a regular.
“The minute we opened up, he was one of our best customers. He always came in,
especially during playoff season. He felt like we were a good luck charm for him. He
would come in with his management team and sign a lot of the top players there.
Everybody from Derek Jeter to Jorge Posada,” remembers Scotto. “We would tease him
because they were always in deep conversation at the table. We said ‘One day we
want to do a plaque by this table. You always sit at this table, there is always goings
on here. What can we say on the plaque?’ He said ‘The planning starts here’. A few
years ago, when he was well, we put up the plaque and he was really excited, but also
a little humbled. He didn’t want the attention, but he knew this was coming out of
love. He was a nice man.
Despite the success of the eatery, the famous roster of patrons and heavy traffic
brought about by loyal customers and foodies alike, the Scotto family runs Fresco like
a Mom and Pop shop. Scotto matriarch, Marion Scotto welcomes diners, who are also
likely to run into the rest of the Scotto clan, while dining on family recipes like
spaghetti alla chitarra and pizza Margherita. Even Rosanna herself, whose title at the
restaurant is “President of Schmoozing” manages to hold court there several times a
week, socializing with guests and entertaining the crowd.
“I love having a good time. I just like to laugh I like being around people. I always
have. At the restaurant I had to come up with some sort of function there. I didn’t
want to work too hard, since I had a day or a night job, so, I had to find my own little niche. And I found schmoozing and it works,” affirms the 52 year-old. “I go around
and I talk to people if there is a line to get into the restaurant. I’m making every one
laugh on the line so they forget how long they’re waiting. It’s a lot of fun.”
Finding time for fun is tough, especially with Scotto’s schedule as morning news
anchor. Her weekday schedule involves arriving at the station, promptly at 5:15 in the
morning, when most of us are still in deep REM sleep. After a quick editorial meeting
and a few moments reviewing the daily newspapers, she hits the air at 7 o’clock for
three hours of live television. The hectic schedule works well with Scotto’s lifestyle
and allows her to wrap up her work day early enough to head home to her two children, Jenna and L.J., with her husband of 25 years, Louis.
“Actually, eating dinner with my family was something I took for granted growing up and I didn’t realize how important it was until I had my own children. We
struggle to somehow make that dinner hour traditional. For many years I worked
nights, so what I would do was come home have dinner and do a little bit of
homework with the kids and run back to work,” recalls Scotto. Life on “the morning shift” as Scotto likes to call it, helped make those family dinners a household
tradition a few nights a week.
“I realize that being there and sitting down talking with your kids, a lot happens around
that dinner table. Even in the preparation of getting that dinner time meal together you
find out a lot about them. It’s like driving in a car when people start talking about things
that, maybe, they didn’t want to talk about. It’s the same thing when you are preparing
food, they’re kind of off their guard and you learn a lot more about their day and their
friends, their teachers - it’s a very important time,” according to the Grand Marshall of
the 2009 Howard Beach Columbus Day Parade. “I’m not saying we do it 7 days a week,
but we do get together and make meals together and have dinner together, several times
a week. Listen, these are tough times. Sometimes both parents are working. You have to
somehow make it work. It’s not traditional, it’s not conventional, it’s not the way I was
brought up, but its 2010 and you have to somehow make it work.”
It is her “make it work” attitude that has enabled her to stay on top in the competitive world of television news. Her position as the lead female anchor at Fox 5’s Good
Day New York since 1990 demonstrates not only her ability to endure and evolve in
an ever changing medium, but also shows how the New York area audience has committed to tuning into her every day for more than 20 years.
“She represents the audiences. They embrace her and trust her. That is a huge part
of being an anchor, people trust and believe in you,” confirms Gemma Puglisi,
Assistant Professor in the School of Communication at American University in
Washington D.C. “She is a representative of the community. She represents that New
York audience who has grown up with her. She has gone through various generations
and it says a great deal about her in a day and age when anchors come and go. People
can relate to her, because she is one of New York’s own. She is a New York girl and
the audience embraces her and it has helped her longevity.”
Starting out at WTBS in Atlanta, Scotto remembers how difficult it was to find her
on-air identity. “I remember I was given advice to be yourself. Being yourself is actually something that is very difficult thing to do. Because when you’re young, you’re
still trying to figure out who you are,” explains Scotto. “So starting off, I would just
be willing to do anything. This business requires a certain degree of unexplained
insanity. We work nights; we work weekends and we work holidays. You have to be
willing in the beginning to give up a lot. You give up a lot of your personal time. But
if this is what you love, then it will pay off in the end.”
The payoff for Scotto is evident in her ability to get the often ungettable interview
before the competition. She scored the first interview with Diana Bianchi, the woman
accused of coming between supermodel Christie Brinkley and her now, ex-husband.
Many credit Scotto’s in-depth interview as tantamount in helping Marty Tankleff get
a new trial after being falsely convicted of murdering his parents. Career highlights
such as these, have kept up Scotto’s reputation as a consummate professional and ace
journalist, but it is her role as a mentor to fellow journalists that has endeared her to
an entire industry.
“From broadcasting stand point, Rosanna taught me how to relax and have fun on
the air and also how to deal with some of the sensitive, stories that come up time to

time,” explains FOX 5 Sports Anchor, Duke
Castiglione. “She truly cares about the
people she works with. She knows the
name of every person that works at the
station, and probably something about
their family or their lives. She really goes
out of her way. She is a leader in the newsroom and studio.”
Learning how to relax and have fun
is something that seems to be an
effortless part of Scotto’s style.
Perhaps it is because of her “be true
to yourself motto” that she applies to
her personal and professional life.
“The first order of business is taking
care of you. If you don’t take care of
yourself you’re not going to be happy
and you can’t help anybody else,” stresses
Scotto. “I think women are just kind of
ingrained and bred to always be helping
other people, whether it’s our husbands, our children or our friends. At
some point you have to take care of
you. Because you really can’t do anything unless you are happy with
yourself first.” ▲

Catching Up with Carol
by Carol Silva
The Phone Call
Nine years ago, my husband and I got our Class
“C” Licenses to coach travel soccer on Long Island.
LIJSL – Long Island Junior Soccer League - puts
coaches through a couple of months of solid training before allowing us to coach kids. Great idea. I
remember the rules, I remember the techniques.
But mostly, I remember the inspirational speech we
got from Rocco - an 80-something year old veteran
coach.
Rocco explained that when you coach a kid, you’re coaching much more
than their feet. You’re coaching the game of life. You’re teaching them that
a lot of living happens when you’re behind in the game and you have to
choose between quitting and perseverance. That sometimes you’ll have to
choose how you’ll handle it when you do lose. And “winning like a champion” means remembering how the other guy feels when he loses.
Rocco also said not to do it for a “thank you.” Don’t expect these 10 or
even 16 year olds girls or boys to come up and say, “Hey thanks Coach, for
standing out in windy, rainy practices for years to teach me the game.” He
said that if you’re lucky, in 15 or 20 years,
that grown-up player may see you in the A lot of living
grocery store and say, “Coach, wait
here!” He or she will return with a spouse happens when
and a baby in a stroller, because it’s important that you know, “Look at what I’ve you’re behind in

the game and you
But last month we got “the phone call.”

and perseverance.
their baby brother too. It wasn’t easy for
the oldest at 16, to transition into a new
school and onto a new school team of guys, some who’ve played together
since they were 5.
He told us about his first school game – tied 0-0 at the end of regulation.
He was trying to make so many things come together. He told my husband,
“Coach, I suddenly stopped to think of all the things you ever taught me I
needed to do if I wanted to play like a champion. And that’s when I did it.
I shot and scored! Goal! We won and now school and soccer are so good.”
And his Mom beamed, “Today his picture is in Newsday!”
Suddenly years of practice nights that ended with another pizza dinner for
our family and an SUV that still smells like a boys’ locker room was well
worth it. But I feel like that “thank you” call belongs to all of you coaches,
and teachers and even parents – so you know you’ve made a difference. As
they say in the soccer world, “Golazo!” “Goal!” ◆
