AND HER PUPS LUNA 2007 Poster Children In helping one, sometimes we help many 2007 FurBall EIGHTH ANNUAL EVENING FOR THE LOVE OF ANIMALS Thursday, November 8, 2007 • Flowerfield Save-A-Pet’s 2006 Fur Ball Luna’s Story The Story of a Mother and Her Puppies In helping one, sometimes we help many... Those of us who are here in support of Save-A-Pet’s rescued animals have a common bond.We are woven from the same fabric, the threads of which are sewn with kindness. It’s not something we decide to be—it’s just who we are. In our hearts, we want to believe that all people are innately kind, but sadly much cruelty exists in the world. Among the most who suffer at the hands of these heartless offenders are our innocent companion animals. At Save-A-Pet, we face this harsh reality on a daily basis—but it never gets easier to look into a pair of frightened eyes, behind which is the shattered spirit or broken body of a dog or cat who was deemed “worthless.” Such is the story of Luna. Luna, a young Shepherd mix, was brought into the animal emergency hospital in July because she was in labor, moments away from giving birth. The people who brought her in told the veterinarian to put her to sleep because they were angry that she had “gotten herself pregnant” and they did not want to deal with her or her puppies. The doctor, horrified at the condition of this poor dog and even more disgusted at the heartlessness of these people, took Luna in. They walked out the door and never looked back. Left behind was a terrified mother-to-be—a young dog with deep sadness in her eyes and barely enough strength to keep herself standing. She had been virtually starved to death. Anyone who believes that dogs don’t feel emotions should have seen Luna that day.Though she couldn’t speak with words, it was clear that she was in a state of desperation, wanting only to find a safe place to give birth to her pups. She had arrived at the emergency room just in time. As if she had held out as long as she could, Luna knew she was now in good hands.Within minutes of arriving through the doors, her puppies began to be born. Doctors feared she would not survive for she was nothing but skin and bones. Still, they were determined to help this young mother live to see the nine beautiful puppies that were soon to be born. Sadly, with Luna’s condition, two puppies died shortly after birth, but six more survived. When Luna’s condition was stable, she was transported to Save-a-Pet and yet another puppy was born! The Save-A-Pet staff and volunteers, while mourning the loss of the first two pups, believed that seven would be a lucky number. In need of a quiet foster home, the Lohsen family stepped up to the plate and took Luna and babies home where they would provide them all with the care they needed to get stronger and to feel comfortable and safe. Because of their commitment and love, all seven pups and Mommy Luna thrived! After eight weeks of constant care, Luna and her babies were ready to be adopted. With careful screening and a promise to Luna that ALL would go on to have a wonderful life, Save-A-Pet found loving homes for everyone. Two months later, Luna is romping and playing and enjoying all the comforts of home, content that she was able to be a good mom and healed in mind, body and spirit. Her puppies, all in homes of their own, continue to flourish and experience all the joys of puppy-hood. Mother Theresa once said that “No one can do great things alone, but together we can do small things with great love.” All it takes is kindness, and with people like all of you, we can change the world, one dog at a time. Sometimes in helping one, we help many… Save-A-Pet’s 2007 Fur Ball 2 Thursday, November 8, 2007 Save-A-Pet’s 2007 Fur Ball 3 Thursday, November 8, 2007 Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. PHONE 631.473.6333 FAX 631.473.2319 WEB www.saveapetli.net It’s been just seven short years that Save-A-Pet has been in the Port Jefferson area. In those seven years, thousands of dogs and cats have found restored health, love, companionship and live happily ever after. By uniting with our Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter, we have together accomplished this mission on a grander scale. One of Save-A-Pets important community efforts is alleviating the suffering of feral (undomesticated) cats. The only humane solution to this crisis is T.N.R., which stands for TRAP, NEUTER, RETURN. The cats are humanely trapped, sterilized, vaccinated, tested for disease and released back to be fed and overseen by community caretakers. With the help of the families of Dr. Cliff Conarck and Mary Samson, both great humanitarians, we have opened up C.L.I.F.F.S Clinic, our own feral cat spay/neuter facility. The anagram stands for Creating Long Islands Feral Feline Solution. Under the direction of Dr. Lynda Loudon and Dr.Tim Sheppard, the public can bring feral cats for spay/neuter services at a reduced rate. They may also make arrangements for recuperation of the ferals at our shelter if needed. Items such as traps and houses are also available. In just one year we have spayed and neutered 800 cats! This year we are hoping to move and expand to a new location and be able to help even more animals. We are looking at property close to our present shelter but will be adding more kennel space for our rescued companion animals. We are planning on having a larger spay/neuter clinic, a humane education center, a full service pet grooming salon, pet boarding, dog training and everything you’ll need for your furry friends. All of the proceeds from these services will support the shelter animals. It’s a win/win situation. But we need your help. Our dreams are high but our funds are low. We are a vital part of the community. Please help us continue our mission. I am proud to be a founder and president of such a wonderful, growing organization. The staff and volunteers are without a doubt some of the most dedicated, compassionate people I have ever met and I am privileged to have them on my team. This evening is appropriately named ‘An Evening for the Love of Animals.’ It is for all of us, who love and cherish our companion animals and want to help end the suffering of others. It’s for those who want a safe haven for the orphaned animals in our community. Together we can make a difference. Together we can change their lives, one at a time. So for this evening, enjoy the warmth of good company, food, drink and all we have to offer. And feel good knowing that thanks to you, the animals are enjoying the same at Save-A-Pet. His soul is still here.” Dear Waldo and Mia, I wish you were here to see all the good that is happening at Save-A-Pet. As two of my largest rescue dogs you’d both be happy to know we have helped a few Mastiffs this year. Not to mention, hundreds of wonderful pure and mixed breed dogs. You taught me more than any human ever could. You taught me of unconditional love, trust, loyalty and true friendship. You inspire me to keep on rescuing others when human cruelty makes me want to give up in defeat. But, I won’t let the others down. In your honor I continue the mission we began together. At Save-A-Pet, the most prestigious award is the Waldo Award. And now, in the passing of Mia, we are adding an award in her honor. Each year it is given to an outstanding member of our community who’s commitment to the animals is seen in all that is done for Save-A-Pet. . . someone who is not looking for recognition, but who’s selfless acts of kindness reflect in the atmosphere of SaveA-Pet. Now we will be honoring an outstanding man with The Waldo Award and an outstanding woman with The Mia Award. In your honor, we will continue this annually. Although you are gone from this earth, you will never be forgotten. True inspiration lives forever, for it is passed on to those we connect with. It is a circle of love that gets bigger and stronger with every link. Our circle keeps growing thanks to you. She was a gentle ball of fun, the runt of her litter, and had been raised at Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center in Port Jefferson. During an animal adoption event I was running for Save-A-Pet, Pumpkin was left behind at the end of the night, unwanted. She climbed the cage, crying out, so I held her and comforted her. I then promised that I would always care for her. Pumpkin grew to be an exceptional, healthy life force, who gave back so much love. She was beautiful and unique, with vivid markings that included little ringlets on her tail, and bright yellow eyes that watched me when I slept. She was sweet, playful and had a silly sense of humor, but was also quite the judge of character. Pumpkin would love to converse, with her distinct meows that sometimes mimicked my inflections, and would join in on telephone conversations, but only for a special few. Pumpkin even provided her distinctive trills on my humorous answering machine message that made her seem like she was answering the phone. When I wrote articles at my computer, Pumpkin would keep me company on her special chair, right next to mine. In December, she was diagnosed with chylothroax, an accumulation of fluid in the chest. During her illness, Pumpkin had the best quality of life possible. She was doing all, but just doing it slower. She braved all of her treatments and thrived, and great thanks go to the Syosset Animal Hospital, whose staff remembers Pumpkin as a "real trouper." After seven weeks, though, Pumpkin's body could not stand the strain anymore. Her health declined quickly and she became weak. During that last night, Pumpkin's feline housemate and best friend since kittenhood, Angel, knew it was Pumpkin's time to go, and kissed her a few times on the neck to say goodbye. During the euthanasia procedure, I was completely heartbroken, but I stood strong to hold Pumpkin's head the whole time. I spoke soft(c)2007 Alicyn Leigh Photography ly over her ear, telling her that she was very much loved. I also promised to see her again at the Rainbow Bridge. Pumpkin will be greatly missed, but will always be remembered as a "purrfect" pet. “Meet you at the Rainbow Bridge as you are forever in my heart."
