Dearest Friends,
havuot is often the forgotten
festival, after the vastly more
popular Passover and the more
conveniently scheduled Sukkot.
The festival of receiving the Torah comes
around the time that school lets out, but
Jewish summer camps have not yet begun.
There are very few distinctive rituals: no
seders for feasting or huts for building and
dwelling. Shavuot is more of a mental and
emotional journey; the culmination of the
Passover story…Think about it: If the Jewish
people were redeemed only to wander
aimlessly through the wilderness, what
kind of redemption would that be? Shavuot
is when our people find a purpose; leaving
Egypt was not only for the benefit of the
generation of slaves—it had far greater
ramifications. We depart Egypt in order to
arrive at Sinai. We are freed from Pharaoh
in order to enter into the service of God.
The giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, the
central event celebrated at Shavuot, is
where the relationship between God and
Israel is made official.

I happen to love Shavuot… unlike the
other pilgrimage festivals, it is preciously
short, and compact. In the course of just
two days, we convene for festive meals,
beautiful prayers, and deep learning as
we celebrate God’s most precious gift to
the Jewish people. Over the years various
customs have evolved with this holiday.
Among the most popular is the Tikkun
L’eyl Shavuot, originally promulgated by
the kabbalists, the 16th Century Jewish
mystics of the city of Tzfat. In order to
demonstrate a yearning for Torah, and
a passion for the annual renewal of our
covenantal relationship with God, the
kabbalists instructed Jews to stay up all
night on Erev Shavuot, studying sacred
texts. Actual tikkunim, special collections
of sacred texts to be studied on that holy
night were developed as well, although
nowadays the Tikkun L’eyl Shavuot has
taken on many different permutations,
including at Har Shalom…from guest
scholars to various symposia on Jewish
topics to theme-based learning. This year,
as you hopefully noticed from the cover
of the Tablet, we are going to express our
devotion to Jewish learning and text by
learning short excerpts about each of the
24 books of the Tanakh, the Jewish Bible.
We are inviting anyone who is interested
to participate…sign up for a book, teach
something about its message, either in
a traditional presentation or by being
more creative; do it in song, in poetry, in
a skit. By the end of the night we will all
have a deeper appreciation for the Bible,
the core religious text of Judaism and the
foundational book of Western Civilization. I
hope you’ll join us that night, sign up for a
book, and learn together on this festival of
matan Torah, the giving of the Torah to the
Jewish people.

launched into a nigun, a wordless melody. I am used to learning
and teaching nigunim, so I knew what to do: I joined in, as did
a bunch of eager singers around me. After two iterations of the
melody, Joey stopped, and introduced himself.

that room, in a Chicago
hotel, on a cold November
night. It was the first night of
the International Convention
of the United Synagogue of
Conservative Judaism, and I
had signed up to participate
in a session with Joey
Hazzan
Henrique Ozur Bass
Weisenberg, of whom I had
heard great accolades. One
of my colleagues went as
far as to say that Joey will change the way we sing at modern
synagogues.
I
The session was 1 hour long, and we chanted exactly one
nigun, that same one, over and again. Each time the song felt
different; each repetition added another layer of understanding
and familiarity. Joey experimented with pace, rhythm, volume,
and intensity; we followed his lead. Some of us improvised
harmonies; some of us struggled with the melody. At the end
of the hour, the nigun was firmly entrenched into our short-term
memory. And each one of us left that room with their spirits
soaring.
I thank Bob and Laurie Sunshine for helping bring Joey
to Har Shalom. During Shabbat on May 20 to 21, we will
experience the magic and mysticism of Joey’s music, meditate
with his melodies, and learn his Torah. This will be a Shabbat
filled with song, even more than the regular services at the Har.
This will be a unique opportunity, one which I know you will not
want to miss. And I look forward to seeing you here, be it for
Shabbat dinner on Friday night; services and singing sessions on
Shabbat morning; or the melodious Seudat Shlishit on Saturday
evening.
Several concentric rings of chairs were set up in the center
of the room, and, as the attendants walked in, they were invited
to sit as close as possible to the middle. The first surprise
was that people actually did that. Especially at a convention,
participants tend to drift towards the back of the hall, in case
a hasty retreat is necessary. I presumed that the individuals
drifting into the room would decline the proximity, settling first
in the outer ring. But, those who arrived early were eager to be
close to the action, so I joined them at the inner circle.
Now, Joey sat in one of the chairs in the first loop, quietly,
eyes closed for the longest time. He waited until a good number
of singers joined the group, and, without any further explanation,

and take a deep breath in
and out. I take a moment to
think back on the day that
I have had. Was is it a good
day? How did I better the Har

didn’t I get done today that

I need to do tomorrow? The
most important question that I ask myself is, do I still love the
job that I do? The answer, always, is yes! Har Shalom is a special
place.

As I reflect on my time here, over eight months, I think about
my first day. I started in the middle of August and hit the ground
running. I have made incredible connections and have learned
from each and every one of you. I can humbly say that I made
the best decision for my future. Har Shalom is the place for me.
As we near the end of the school year, we have much to
be proud of. Our Bonim and Machar groups have had stellar
programming and increased participation from one program to
the next. Our Kadima basketball team finished second in this
year’s league. Our USYers have spent time doing community
service and bonding as a group. We even saw the election of
one of our very own USYers to USY International Board. We have
had community events from Fire and Ice to the Snow Day Party.
Who could forget a magnificent Shabbaton at Capital Camps?
We as a community have much to be proud of. After each of
these events, I have no choice but breathe deeply and smile!
This is the place to be.
With construction underway, most might see this as a
burden. However, I see it as a breath of fresh air and so many
unbelievable and unforgettable opportunities approaching on
the horizon. As we welcome to new partners in the Har Shalom
“Dream Team” this summer, we welcome fresher air for the
Har Shalom family. I could not be more ecstatic about what lies
ahead. This summer, when I visit the Har Shalom campers, I am
excited to take this fresh air with me and ignite the enthusiasm
into each of our campers for the upcoming year at Har Shalom.
If you can’t tell by now, I love my Shul! I hope that over
the next few weeks as we bring our academic year to a close,

This summer, the ECEC will have a big transition as well; both
the classrooms and playgrounds are getting a make-over! Thanks
to your support from the Silent Auction and the hard work of the
volunteers who made it happen, every child at Har Shalom will
be able to enjoy a state of the art, brand new playground! I know
the ECEC and Religious School kids as well as everyone else who
plays outside are looking forward to it.
Personally, I have been going through a lot of transitions.
First, my move from Michigan back to Maryland, then marriage
and name change, and finally a new job! I decided to add another
transition within Har Shalom to a new position, Interim Director of
the ECEC! I am incredibly honored and humbled to take over this
position temporarily. It has been an exciting change for me and I
love every moment of it!
I used to be scared of change, but now I understand the only
way to continue growing is through transition! I am sure many of
you are going through your own transitions in life, whether your
child is going to college or you yourself are changing jobs. I would
love to hear about your transitions and remember that everyone
at Har Shalom is here for you no matter what change you are
going through.

This month, of course, we celebrate Mother’s Day in the
United States. Our secular Mother’s Day was created by social
activist Anna Jarvis in 1908. It was officially adopted as a U.S.
holiday in 1914. Ironically, Anna Jarvis later denounced Mother’s
Day’s commercialization and tried to get it removed from the
calendar.
But a day to celebrate Jewish mothers? Perhaps, Cheshvan
11 is the most likely candidate. Cheshvan 11 is the yahrzeit of the
matriarch Rachel. It is also the 41th day of the Jewish year. In
gematria, the word “eim” or mother has the numerical equivalent
to 41. This connection, though, feels a little like a stretch.
So, what is the answer? When do we, as Jews, celebrate
our mothers? The answer is literally me’Sinai, from Sinai. The
10 Commandments tells us to honor our mother and our father.
Every day is essentially a mother’s day. Respect and honoring of
our mothers is a constant throughout the year.
On Mother’s Day, we take a little extra care to remember
this commandment, celebrate it and renew our commitment to
it. Think of it had Hiddur Mitzvah, the command to beautify the
mitzvot. On Mother’s Day, we enhance the beauty of the mitzvah
of honoring our mother. We take her for brunch, bring her
flowers, arrange a phone call or Skype session or say a special
blessing in her honor.

curious how the system of trope works and adds meaning to
the Biblical text? This course is for you! No knowledge of Torah
cantillation is needed, but participants should be able to read
Hebrew with relative ease.

Explore the Talmud and its lessons with Rabbi Cahan. This
perennial favorite has been around for over a decade. Hebrew
or prior study helpful, but not required. Novice students always

Minha-Torah Study-Ma’ariv Study Group
On Shabbat, time is 15 minutes before candle-lighting time
the day before (rounded to the nearest 5 min)
Since 1990, Har Shalom congregants have celebrated the end of
Shabbat with a lay-led Minha-Torah Study, Ma’ariv Study Group.
This 90-minute service includes 30 to 40 minutes of learning
on the weekly Torah portion or the prayers and their meaning.
Dr. Stan Siegel, Dr. Fred Steinberg and other congregants and
clergy members have led the teaching and discussion. Come
discover this gem of learning at Har Shalom - twenty-five years
in the making. Registration not required.

Holocaust Commemoration Service at Har Shalom
Tuesday, May 3 at 5:30 PM
(Exhibit Hall Opens at 4:30 PM)
Join us on Tuesday, May 3 at 5:30 PM for a special Yom HaShoah service to commemorate the
memory of those who perished in the Holocaust, honor the survivors and recognize the righteous
Gentiles. Fifth, sixth and seventh grade Religious School students will be viewing the Exhibit
Hall and attending the Commemoration Service. Parents are encouraged to share this experience
with their children and attend this important Holocaust Program with them.
Help us create a Har Shalom Wall of Remembrance
Submit names of your family members who perished in the Holocaust on our link
http://harshalom.org/holocaust-wall-of-remembrance/. Come to the Commemoration Service on
May 3 to honor their memory. A special Holocaust Kaddish will be recited.
Remember a Child who Perished in the Holocaust
Young people can sign-up to participate in the service by going to

the Holocaust they remembered on their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Dessert Night Out
Recap
The last Dessert Night Out of the season had an incredible
turnout with over 60 people in attendance. There was a
plentiful display of awesome desserts and fruit. Thank you to
our hosts, Cindy Fishman and Mike Silverman, for being such
gracious hosts. In addition to hosting, Cindy and Mike served as
tasting judges to the fine selection of hamantaschen that were
brought by several guests. Thank you to our many bakers of
both traditional and contemporary holiday delights. First prize
went to Debbie Meisegeier for her traditional fruit-filled treat
and 2nd prize went to Ellen Robin for her cannoli hamantaschen.
Both received gift cards for their efforts. I personally thought the
double chocolate with cookie dough filling was most tasty!! My
classic poppy one didn’t make the final cut!

50th Anniversary Capital Campaign

You can feel the excitement in the air. We kicked off the first
week of construction Monday evening with a toast and ceremonial
destruction of the wall in the social hall. Sledgehammers and
hardhats were provided and our team was all too willing to start
the process of rebuilding. There was something cathartic with
each smash of that wall.
We took down the items in the display cases, library and
on the walls for safe keeping and reuse and built the temporary
wall in the hallway to provide for protection. The contractors
started with the demolition of the bathrooms.
During the second week, demolition continued in the lobby
area. We have taken out ceilings and walls to accommodate the
larger opening to the new library/lounge. This new area will both
keep our most widely read books and create a welcoming and
quite place to read and wait for the clergy.
Demolition and the reconfiguration of the new and improved
restrooms has begun and the Steel has arrived to support the
newly enlarged and welcoming entryway!

Congressman John Delaney
Representative for Maryland’s 6th
Congressional District

The Har Shalom Men’s Club is honored to host Congressman
John Delaney as he addresses his constituents at our synagogue.
Congressman John Delaney was elected in 2012 to serve
Maryland’s Sixth District, which encompasses portions of the
Washington D.C. suburbs of Montgomery and Frederick Counties
and all of Washington, Allegany, and Garrett Counties.
As the son of a union electrician, John grew up in a blue collar
household. Scholarships from his father’s union (IBEW Local 164),
the American Legion, VFW, and the Lion’s Club, allowed John to
attend college. John is a graduate of Columbia University and
Georgetown University Law Center. A business builder, Delaney
founded two New York Stock Exchange listed companies
before the age of 40, and is a past winner of the Ernst & Young
Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
John and his wife April McClain-Delaney have made
community service a priority, especially in the field of education,
the provision of core services, and issues effecting children. They
are generous supporters of the public interest law initiatives at
Georgetown University Law Center, where they endowed the
Delaney Family Professorship in Public Interest Law and have
funded significant scholarships for student’s interest in public
service. John is a member of the Board of Directors of Georgetown
University and the National Symphony Orchestra, was the past
Chairman of the Board at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School and
was a past member of the Board of Directors for the International
Center for Research on Women.
Congressman Delaney’s primary focus in office is to restore
our nation’s economic competitiveness so that we can have a
strong middle class, raise our standard of living, and expand the
number of good jobs available to Americans. In 2011, Delaney
founded Blueprint Maryland, a non-profit dedicated to invigorating
Maryland’s private sector. Blueprint Maryland gathered business

Adult Kids: Club Activities
As you should know by now, the Adult Kids activities are
organized by the Men’s Club and are oriented towards members
who are physically, if not psychologically, old enough to have adult
kids; i.e., people older than about 50 years.
The three primary Adult Kids activities are monthly dinners,
semiannual golf outings and a monthly book and movie get
together. During April we had our spring golf outing. Details on
this activity will be reported next month because of the long lead
time needed for The Tablet. No Adult Kids dinner was held in April
because of the golf outing. In March, we went to a popular deli.
Ten people attended and we all had a good time.
The Book and Movie Activity featured a showing of Spotlight
at Don Moldover’s house. Yashur Koach to Don and Sheila for
hosting us. This movie is an excellent portrayal of the reporting
by the Boston Globe that broke the Catholic Church problems
with pedophiles. We discussed the movie after the showing and
enjoyed some pizza that we ordered. We completed reading our
first book, The Secret Chord by Geraldine Brooks. You will be
informed of our next book selection in the June Tablet.

AK Dinner, Wednesday, May 18th at 6:30 pm. Restaurant is
TBD; the restaurant will be either kosher or will have vegetarian
and fish entrées.
Book and Movie Activity, Wednesday, May 25th Movie and
logistics TBD.

This year was wonderfully
successful!
Over 900 people received Purim
Baskets made by members of Har
Shalom’s Sisterhood. We are proud and
very happy about the substantial profit that was made.
Perhaps some of you would like to help next year. There
is always a need and a space for more helpers.
Sisterhood Helps ECEC
the danger in silence and repression and the repercussions
of never voicing how you really feel.
As always, join the members of the Book Club at 12:30 PM
– with or without a brown bag lunch – for coffee and
conversation. The book discussion begins at 1:00 PM.
Torah Fund
The Sisterhood’s event benefiting The Torah
Fund’s special Project in Memory of Selma Miller
has been moved to September. More information
on date and location will be sent at a later date.
Sisterhood is happy to donate $1,000
to the ECEC to help purchase a new
playground for the children. We hope to
play with them in the future.

Club
May 4
The Sisterhood Daytime Book Club will
meet on May 4th to discuss “Everything
I Never Told You” by Celeste Ng. Marsha
Schwartz will facilitate the discussion.
This first novel examines the Lees, a middle class
mixed-racial family in suburban 1970s Ohio. After middle
child Lydia disappears and is discovered dead at the
bottom of a lake, the Lees will have to revisit painful
memories that have contributed to extremely tense and
fragile family dynamics. Through shifting perspectives
and shifts in time, “Everything I Never Told You” explores

Daytimers Forum: Rabbi Cahan
Wednesday, May 11, at Noon
Our speaker will be Rabbi Cahan, in a presentation postponed
from February entitled “The Jewish Geography and History of
Spain”. We are all aware of the expulsion of the Jews in 1492
but few know in any detail the rich cultural history of the Spanish
Jews prior to that time, beginning as early as 300 C.E. It is also of
interest that the current King of Spain has been reaching out to
the descendants of the Spanish Jews who were exiled to consider
joint citizenship and even returning to that country. We look
forward to an interesting, informative, and entertaining meeting.

as leaders of the Forum and Theater groups as of the end of the
current season. Although we have enjoyed working with you,
we find that it is becoming harder and harder to perform our
responsibilities as they should be done. We believe that these
activities should be led by younger individuals with more energy
than we can muster at this time.

individuals and/or couples who may be interested in taking over

Daytimers Forum:
State Senator Brian Feldman
District 15
Thursday, June 9, at noon
Our final speaker for the season will be State Senator Brian
Feldman, whose District 15 includes Har Shalom and many if
not a majority of its members. Please note that the date has
been changed to June 9, 2016, to accommodate his schedule.
Senator Feldman was appointed to his current position in 2013
by Governor O’Malley, having served in the House of Delegates
from 2002 until then. In 2014, he was elected to a full four-year
term. Senator Feldman currently sits on the Finance Committee
of the State Senate. Before entering the political arena, he served
as an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice. He is a practicing
attorney in Maryland. Senator Feldman will discuss the 2016

The Daytimers Forums are held monthly, September to June, in
the Har Shalom Social Hall and are free and open to all. Bring a
dairy brown-bag lunch at noon; refreshments will be served.
From October through April, the Jewish Film Festival presents
outstanding motion picture dramas, comedies and documentaries
produced in Israel, Europe and the U.S.
For many years, the Daytimers has arranged for the group to
attend selected stage productions at Theatre J at the DC Jewish
Community Center. We are looking forward to arranging a number
of such trips in the next year.
