Spend time at the waterfront learning power boating, waterskiing, or just sit back on your tube, hang on tight and be towed up and down the river. We have new trap and skeet range, archery range and if your Scouts are up for it, action archery. If your Scouts are looking for the more technical programs, we offer an extensive STEM program. This year the fees for Broad Creek are all inclusive. That means, with few exceptions, the materials ( kits, ammunition, clays etc. ) are included in the price. Maybe family vacation conflicts with your home unit’s scheduled week at camp or most of the unit is headed to one of BSA outstanding high adventure camps but your Scout can’t make it. Or your Scout just wants another week (or two) at camp. That’s where provisional camp comes in. Pick a week that works for you and your Scout and sign up for provisional camping. We provided the adult leadership either in a Troop made up of youth from multiple units or place the Scout with an experienced unit. The Scouts can participate in all aspects of summer camp. Your home unit does not have to be camping at Broad Creek. FELIZ PRIMAVERA! I hope everyone managed to get through the last few months with the weather we were experiencing. Espero que todos pudieron soportar los últimos meses debido al tiempo que hemos estado experimentando. It’s the first time in a long time I can remember having to close the Scout office several times for the harsh weather. While I know we like to have a day off from work, our staff really pitched in and kept things rolling and even volunteered for some week-end office work to keep up with the workload. Es la primera vez en mucho tiempo que recuerdo el tener que cerrar la Oficina de Scouting varias veces por las inclemencias del tiempo. This council is in a constant mode of activities, district events, week-end camping, council events….too numerous to mention all. Thanks to all of our great volunteers for being part of this great program and council and for your “one hour a week” in volunteering. I’m sure you all know this is a popular phrase you probably were told when you first became interested in volunteering. You are appreciated! Our council recently honored the Class of Eagles for 2013 of which we had some 500 Scouts reach that pinnacle at year-end. We also honored seventeen volunteers who were selected among their peers to be presented with the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a volunteer from their council….the Silver Beaver Award, as well as presenting the District Journey to Excellence Awards. Sheriff Jay Fisher talks to Cub Scouts of Pack 984 Chartered to Perry Hall APRIL IS YOUTH PROTECTION MONTH - ARE YOU TRAINED? According to Childhelp, a leading national non-profit organization dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect, by the time you read this letter 6 reports of child abuse will have been made. Every ten seconds a report of child abuse is made. By the end of today over 4 child deaths will occur because of child abuse. Child abuse not only harms the child but will harm the child that the person will grow to be. 90% of child sexual abuse victims know the perpetrator in some way. 30 % of abuse and neglected children will abuse their own children. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Baltimore County Sheriff R. Jay Fisher is the Honorary Chair of the Baltimore Area Council’s “April is Youth Protection Month”. Recognition and prevention starts in the home. The Scouts as they join are required to review and discuss with their parents information in a Parents guide “How to Protect your Children from Child Abuse”. This guide helps a parent understand what child abuse is, how to recognize it, how a child can resist it, and how to report it. We call that the “Three Rs”. Recognition, Resist and Report. This guide helps parents talk with their children about child abuse prevention. The Boy Scouts of America designed a training program called “Youth Protection” that discusses Child Abuse prevention and the policies of the organization to prevent Child Abuse. The training is now mandatory for all registered adult leaders. The training is on-line and available to all, not just leaders or parents. It can be accessed through the Boy Scouts of America’s website www.scouting.org click on the My.Scouting portal and sign in and take the training you need not be a registered leader to have a My.Scouting account. BROAD CREEK SUMMER CAMP – WWW.BROADCREEKBSA.ORG SPRING 2014 MAKE 2014 A LIFE-CHANGING YEAR How are those New Year’s Resolutions coming? It’s been a couple months, and no doubt some of them have fallen by the wayside. That’s only natural considering how often life gets in the way of big changes we want to make. But what if you could resolve to do something big that requires so little time and effort on your part that the day-to-day things we need to get done won’t interfere? As impossible as that seems, it’s something our vehicle donation program accomplishes throughout the year. People who want to donate unwieldy items—everything from motorcycles to RVs, some of which don’t even run anymore—make a single phone call, and that’s it. Through a partnership with the Donation Division of IAA, a nationwide auto auction company, the vehicle is transported at no cost to you and sold at auction, and the proceeds fund Scouting programs in the Baltimore area. Even the financial paperwork is taken care of so you get the receipt you need to file for a tax deduction. Perhaps the best part is the gigantic impact you make with just one of these donations. Opting for the auction block was a strategic decision on our part because of the competitive aspect it introduces to the sale process. As a result, these items go for thousands of dollars and occasionally tens of thousands! That’s major funding we can use to give Baltimorearea youth experiences they would’ve never had otherwise, helping them build character on their road to becoming leaders in our community. A Scout comes to learn obligations to other people and the society he/she lives in. This is where we find the desire for service to our communities. The annual Scouting for Food campaign of the Baltimore Area Council is the only council wide service project that we run annually. This is a time to think about others in our society that are in hard times or just need a little help. Historically the Baltimore Area Council ran our Scouting for Food campaign earlier in the year. Last year, we moved the campaign to April at the request of the local food pantries. From Thanksgiving through the Holiday Season folks in our communities typically become much more caring for their neighbors and fellow man. This leads to in influx of donations to the pantries during this time. While this food is greatly appreciated and used as best as possible, this large donation all at once leaves the pantries empty with little to no donations in the Spring. By moving our collection to April we help the pantries have an adequate stock of food for the Spring and into the Summer months. This coming 2014 we are hoping for our largest collection yet as we increase the visibility of this very important and much needed program. Please reach out to your local Scouting for Food Chair in your District and ask how you and/or your unit can get involved. We are excited to announce that this year; your unit will be able to report your Scouting for Food service hours online at www.baltimorebsa.org/sff. Once reported you will receive a confirmation email congratulation you on your service to our communities and simple instruction on how to report those same hours on the Journey to Excellence website (required for your unit to earn Journey for Excellence.) PERSONNEL I am pleased to announce that Brandon Gething is assuming the position as District Executive for Harford District effective Monday, March 17th. He will be reporting through Andy Zilnik. He has a B.A. in Communication Studies from Kutztown University, PA. Brandon is re-entering the profession and had served for three years as a District Executive in the Del-Mar-Va Council. He is an Eagle Scout, O. A. Vigil Honor member, has the Venturing Silver Award and Wood Badge trained. It is with mixed emotions that I announce the resignation of Brian DeBease effective Monday, March 31st. Brian has accepted a position as Director of Development with the Del-Mar-Va Council, Delaware. He came on board serving as District Director for Harford District in 2009 and later has served as Development Director and Senior Development Director for the Finance Department. I know all of you wish Brian and Brandon well in their new endeavors. The Arrowhead District annual business meeting will be held on Monday May 5, 2014 at 8 PM. The location is: Journey of Faith Church 7902 Liberty Rd, Randallstown, MD At this meeting, the district officers and members-at-large will be elected. Voting members of the district include current officers, members-at-large and chartered organization representatives. All the FOS presenters have been trained and have the 2014 FOS Video which does an excellent job of explaining why there is a need for an FOS drive in the Arrowhead District, and it is only 6 minutes long! Please remember FOS is a great opportunity to support your unit, and it is important to support the program for every scout in the Baltimore area! I personally want to say thanks to all of the units who have scheduled their unit’s FOS dates. I am in discussion with a few remaining units for a date. I expect to complete all FOS presentations by the end of April. We are making headway, but every dollar helps us reach our goal and helps put forth an excellent program in the Baltimore Area Council. On a parting note, I want to thank all the units that Patty and I have visited for their warm greetings and scout fellowship! It really does make the job of an FOS presenter easier if the presenter feels Welcome. Are you looking for an outdoor activity where you can camp, practice your scout skills, practice your leadership skills, shoot, fish, and have fun all at the same time? Then you should come to the Arrowhead District Camporee/ Weboree. It will be held April 25th-27th at Camp Milldale in Reisterstown Md. Last year’s event had over 400 attendees and we are looking to have more than 450 this year. This event is open to all Webelos, Scouts, and Crews. CHAIRMAN’S CORNER So, what is an “appropriate” topic for an article in the Area Scout by the Arrowhead District Committee Chair? At times, it is certainly to recognize notable achievements by scouts, scout leaders and even the district itself. We certainly have those. It was recently announced that Charlie Hoppa and Joe Scott will be receiving the prestigious Silver Beaver Award at this year’s Baltimore Area Council awards dinner and also that Arrowhead qualified for Silver status in scouting’s 2013 Journey to Excellence: the BSA’s performance recognition program. My grateful thanks to all of you who helped us in reaching that standard. But I also think that it’s important to use the Area Scouter for “getting the word out” on important challenges facing the district and which will have consequences well beyond my tenure as District Committee Chair. To me, the two biggest challenges facing Arrowhead (as well as the other districts in the Baltimore Area Council) are: (1) membership: and (2) Broad Creek. Arrowhead’s membership is down (as is membership throughout the Council and the country). And, that’s true at the pack, troop and crew levels. Scouting needs scouts! As kids move through Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing, there is a constant need to replenish the source, as well as do our best to keep them in scouting—and then on to being a scout leader; like so many of you reading this article. However, like any living organism, if the source of food is diminished, it will either kill the organism or limit its ability to reach full potential. That is what we need to avoid and we all need to help in that challenge. We can’t everything to Phil Jungst, our Membership Chair, to do it alone or with even one or two committed helpers. We need everybody to help in different ways. For example, if you are interested in joining the committee, let Phil or our District Executive, Brendan Canale, know of your interest. If you think that you have a good idea for membership, pass it along. We are a team with at least one unquestionable goal: to provide the best scouting program we can to kids in our packs, troops and crews. Please help in helping us getting our membership numbers back up. Now, let me turn to Broad Creek. Living where we do in the Baltimore area, we have the great advantage of access to a number of nearby scout camps in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia or even Maryland. And, our scout camp, Broad Creek, is in competition with these other camps for camping trips (especially summer camping trips) by our scouts. For at least two years, the Baltimore Area Council has made it a top priority to improve the facilities and services at Broad Creek. Go online to: www.broadcreekbsa.org and take a look. Even better, speak with scout leaders or scouts who went there last summer and experienced Broad Creek “first hand.” We all owe it to the Council to at least investigate. If you learn good things, then go there! Without our support, the Council cannot keep both Boy Scout camps at Broad Creek open. Because of a falloff in summer camp visits, only Camp Saffran operated last summer and is set to open this summer. It’s still not too late to sign up for this summer. If you have already committed elsewhere, then investigate for next summer. But, in the meantime, go up there and take a look. Without our District’s summer camp trips, Broad Creek will not be able to make the jump to the next level: from a great camp, to one of the best. So, please help. Dear Scouters, DISTRICT NOMINATION MEETING Spring is here and now is the time to ensure that your unit prepared to continue their program beyond the school year. Take advantage of the STEM program at each level to add interest and challenge your program. Look carefully at each level’s program to see the ideas linked to the merit badges and belt loops. Remember, often the experiences of working on these types of projects introduces youth to a future career. Each year, per our Council Bylaws, the Four Rivers District convenes a Nominating Committee to make recommendations and select the leadership of our district for the time between May 2014 to May 2015. This meeting will be at the start of our May District committee meeting, May 5th at Glen Burnie United Methodist Church. COMMISSIONER CORNER Camping is what many scouts state first when asked about the program. Be sure each scout and parent has the information about all summer opportunities. If your unit needs help presenting the information at Broad Creek for all levels of scouting, please let us know. Now is also the time to get the commitments for next year’s leadership. Be sure to recruit and offer training opportunities between leaders to ensure the future of your scout unit. Work also on a Spring recruiting program. Challenge your scouts to bring a friend and introduce them to scouting. Always have fun, enjoying the company of the adults and youth in scouts. These invitation cards feature eye-catching resources created for recruitment campaigns, showing youth engaged in fun-filled activities. The cards provide an easy-to-use template that serves as a tool in overcoming the recruitment challenges caused by limited access to youth in schools. The cards can be preprinted with contact information on the back, or that space can be left blank so Scouting families can use their home computers to fill it in and print as many as they need. The invitational information can also be written in by hand. The cards are online at www. scouting.org/scoutsource/marketing/recruiting.aspx then scroll to the postcards. CHANGE IN UNIT REGISTRATION STATUS AND MEMBERSHIP REPORTING A change in the national reporting of membership data will begin effective January 1, 2015. Starting then, a unit that has not reregistered by its expiration date will be considered “separated” and immediately dropped from BSA’s membership reporting. There will no longer be a “lapse period” for units that do not reregister on time; we will no longer use the term “lapsed” for a unit that has not renewed. This will also change the way we report membership totals. Currently, a lapsed unit’s membership continues to be counted for 60 days in council membership totals. The new definition will begin with units that have an effective date of January 1, 2015. This means that units with a December 31, 2014 expiration date will be included. Volunteers will retain access to MyScouting, MyScouting tools, Internet Rechartering and Internet Advancement for 30 days after their unit has expired and become separated. A separated unit will have 12 months to reregister as a separated/reregistered unit. Once a separated unit has been reregistered, the unit will be included on membership reports starting in the business month that the recharter was posted. SPRING RECRUITMENT MADE EASY Summer is just around the corner…a great time for new families to join your Unit A steady flow of youth into your Scouting program is essential to maintain your unit’s health. New Scouts bring energy and enthusiasm to the program. Scouts who join in the Spring & get to participate in Spring and Summer activities stay in Scouting longer. There are a few simple things you can do this Spring to recruit new Scouts. The Baltimore Area Council is excited to share resources to help! GET STARTED Step 1: Commit to conducting one or more recruitment efforts this Spring… CUB SCOUT PACKS Visit local Kindergarten classes to recruit new Tiger Cubs Invite new boys to an open house or Spring Pack activity (flyers available through your District Executive) Encourage peer to peer recruitment (visit our website for “My Best Friend is a Cub Scout” resources) Manny Fonseca MY.SCOUTING TOOLS GETS A MAKEOVER The new design is faster and more dynamic, and now supports Internet Explorer 10 and 11. Additional enhancements in this release include: • A revamped News section provides more space to post pertinent and relevant information about my.Scouting Tools, along with other Scouting news. • Each Tool icon is in a drop-down list under the Home button to select rather than in a row of large icons after logging in. • My Dashboard is now comprised of My Profile and My Training details. Address, contact information, phone numbers, etc., are in separate editable sections instead of one long section to accommodate and adjust to most mobile screens. • New My Organization Dashboard tool located under the unit or district organization level contains My Calendar and My Announcements details. • The Training Manager, Member Manager, and Organization Manager still maintain existing functionality and look that will be updated in the coming weeks. FOCUS ON RECRUITING SEPARATED YOUTH What do you mean separated youth?? A separated youth is a former member of Scouting who did not renew his or her membership for 2013. As we know, young people choose to leave Scouting for a variety of reasons. Some may lose interest, others may have too many activities going on. However, there are many who depart our program because their unit wasn’t a good fit, or the meeting night wasn’t convenient. For those former Scouts, a phone call may be all it takes to get them excited and re-interested in the Scouting program. We all want to grow our programs, and retention of Scouts is one of the best ways to do it! Here’s how to make this happen: 1.) Call your District Executive and request a list of separated youth in your area 2.) Call the parents of those Scouts on the list (phone numbers are provided), and ask them to give Scouting another try 3.) Invite them to a Pack meeting or activity that will immediately grab their interest 4.) Sign them back up! It’s just that easy, and a lot of families out there will be very appreciative of the personal phone call and invitation. SUMMERTIME PASSPORT Want to enhance your Cub Scouts’ summer program opportunities. How about a self-paced, family-friendly, summer long activity?! Look no further – we have our annual Summertime passport available again this year. This small booklet has Scouts and their families visiting a variety of locations throughout their area during the summer months to keep them excited and having fun! These will be made available at May roundtables, and will also be available on our website in PDF format at www. baltimorebsa.org/membership. This is a great program, and it’s fun, easy, and FREE! All Scouts who complete the full passport and mail in their completed sheet will receive a commemorative patch in the mail! BOY SCOUT TROOPS TRANSFER FEES ELIMINATED Effective January 1, 2014, all registration transfer fees in the BSA were eliminated. Adults and youth in traditional units, in Exploring, and our non-unit registrants will no longer have to pay a $1 transfer fee when switching their registration from one unit or location to the next. WEBELOS TO SCOUT TRANSITION As we head into April and Blue & Gold season is winding down, now is the time to ensure that all 5th grade Webelos have identified and are moving to a Boy Scout Troop in their neighborhood. Our major recruitment venue for Boy Scouts is through the Webelos-to-Scout transition. We need to make sure that every Webelos in your area is offered the opportunity to join a Troop that fits his and his family’s needs. Please work through your District Executive and Membership Chair to identify potential Webelos who have not yet selected a Troop to join. A personal phone call may make the difference! Everyone knows that summer camp can be among the best experiences any scout can have but not every scout can make it. It happens to every troop. Not everyone can come along during camp week. Maybe the travel is too hard or the maybe partially or totally in a time conflict with all the other things our youth do in the summer. Leave no scout behind by sending them to Broad Creek this summer! Each week has established district leaders ready to provide leadership to scouts as part of our provisional program. Last year we had nearly hundred scouts join us as part of the provisional program, even some who were coming back for more time at camp! We have experience, the structure and knowledge on how to still give scouts the amazing summer camp adventure even though they can’t join their troop. Provisional Scouts are $340 anytime or $310 each if they come with a buddy. Leaders volunteering for the provisional unit leadership come free. Go to www.broadcreekbsa.org for more details. COUNCILOR IN TRAINING PROGRAM Our camp directors have been hearing a lot of questions about the Councilor in Training program this season. A Councilor in Training (or CIT) is a full-time volunteer member of our camp staff ages 14-15 who is learning the details of how camp works from the inside. Many young first-year staff members have been to camp but haven’t developed an understanding or specialty of how working at Broad Creek is. By spending a summer as a CIT you are brought on to serve in different program areas and see new areas. Even if they root themselves as a Scoutcraft specialist pro for many years they’ll walk away with a critical understanding of how different areas work and how they relate to each other. A CIT also gains some leverage by being able to create a flexible schedule in case they still want to participate with their own troop at summer camp. The details of being a CIT can be worked out with the respective camp director, both of whom started as CIT’s themselves! V-WEEK THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES Maybe you have heard of all the awesome high-adventure stuff happening at camp, but now it’s opening to a whole week of just Venturing! Different types of treks, ranges and programs offered just for our Venture scouts from August 3rd-August 9th! Many crews already take part in national camps or go on long trips during the summer, but part of V-Week isn’t just the adventure with your crew. It’s joining in on that experience with other crews and meeting scouts in your area all week long. V-Week is an experience no other area council camp can provide. It’s in our backyard, affordable and serves as a landmark to our growing Venturing community. New crews without a set summer program will find it the perfect way to start keeping and growing their scouts. Signups are open so claim the space ASAP or reach out if you have questions. CAMP MOSSELOT - A KNIGHT’S ADVENTURE Come join us at Camp Oest for our adventures at Camp Mooselot! We have a fun and energetic program that is engaging for Cub Scouts and their families. There’s the Pier on iconic Lake Strauss, where you can learn to paddle a canoe or row a rowboat; Shooting Sports, where cubs learn to shoot Bows and BB guns; the Nature lodge, where you can earn your STEM NOVA award; and many more program areas. Plus this year we have two new program areas, Action Sports and Camp Crafts. At Action Sports you can climb the bouldering wall, participate in team sports and Webelos can take a ride on our Action Bike Course! Then you can go over to Camp Crafts where you will do some leatherworking and participate in siege engine warfare! Plus we have many other free time activities including free swims, free shoots, SONGFEST and for the WebII’s, Project M.O.O.S.E. Not sure when to come to camp? We have several different camping options. There are 3 day weekend sessions, and 4 day mid-week sessions. These sessions are open to everyone, from the littlest tiger cub to the biggest Webelo and their families. We also offer two week long Webelos week that are just for Webelos. Tickets will be on sale at future Roundtable March 03, 2014 By Jessica Marsala jmarsala@CatholicReview.org For 83 years, youths in the Scouting movement and adult leaders from parishes across the Archdiocese of Baltimore have received their Catholic Scouting emblems at the annual Scout Mass. At this year’s Scout Mass, held March 2 at St. Pius X in Rodgers Forge, the Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts gathered for another purpose, to exhibit in Baltimore for the first time the International Peace Light. The flame originates in the grotto in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. “I think that the way they (the Scouts) lead their lives: that’s really how they keep the light burning, keep the light alive,” Bishop Denis J. Madden said after celebrating the Mass. “Christ, the light of the world was born in Scouts from Pack 999 dressed up and did some caroling this past Bethlehem, and this symbolism reminds us in a holiday season. wonderful way that Christ is always with us.” While Scouts have been bringing the flame to the United States since the early 2000s, last year was the first it came to the archdiocese, by way of St. John the Evangelist in Frederick. “I think it’s a great way for us as Catholics in a visible way to connect with our faith and with the greater Christian community,” said Amy Spessard, the director of evangelization at the Frederick parish and chairman of the Peace Light program for the archdiocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting. Monsignor Thomas Phillips, pastor of St. Gabriel in Windsor Mill and the chaplain of the Catholic Committee on Scouting, compared the Peace Light to the Olympic Torch as well as the “new fire” that lights the paschal candle. “The Olympic torch is lit and carried through many countries,” Monsignor Phillips said. “In the same way, (there is) the unity we have with each other and the desire that we all have for peace.” Cathy O’Haver, who worships of St. Pius X and has a 9-year-old son, Jacob, in its Cub Scout Pack 787, sees potential in the Peace Light program. “It makes you feel (like) part of a larger community,” O’Haver said. “It makes it very special.” The flame will next travel with the Scouts to the annual interfaith scouting retreat, May 2-4 at the Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation in Harford County. Scouts from 73 parishes in the archdiocese were recognized at the Mass. In addition to performing service, winners of the five Boy Scout and four Girl Scout religious emblems were required to deepen their knowledge of the faith and their relationship with God. As you know, the District Chairman position is held by a volunteer in the community who lends to our mission his or her leadership and management experience. Mr. Stinnett works at the Maryland Department of General Services and is a former college and university basketball coach. He has owned his own company, Stinnett Communications, and has written for The Washington Afro-American Newspaper. SCOUTING HISTORY ON DISPLAY AT AMTRAK Leaders from the Hopkins District represented the Baltimore BSA on February 20 at the Amtrak African-American History Festival inside the Baltimore Pennsylvania Station. Volunteers created a fantastic tabletop display about African-American participation in Scouting from the founding of Boy Scouts to the present. With vintage photographs and quotes from national and local leaders, it was a truly educational exhibit. Tom Campbell, unit commissioner, presented artifacts. Research was provided by Jean Thompson, our district scribe. District Executive Ian Smith made a presentation about Scouting and recruited adult volunteers and youth for Scouting. All aboard! NEW DATE FOR THE MERIT BADGE COLLEGE Postponed due to winter storms, the Merit Badge College will take place May 10. This exciting annual event will take place on the S.S. John Brown, one of only two operational WWII Liberty Ships in the nation. Participating Scouts will work on badges with merit badge counselors who are members of the ship’s expert crew. The badges offered will be oceanography, weather, American Heritage, fire safety, woodworking, and model design and building. Some will require advance or follow-up work as they cannot be completed in a day, but the chance to work together on requirements while on board the ship is very exciting. John Brown is an active naval vessel and the nearest parking at the dockside garage is governed by the Port: All participants must be listed on a roster kept by the ship’s crew and ID must be shown when you arrive. Plan to dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes for safety as you travel up and down the ship’s ladders: Some activities will take place outside on the deck. This event is limited to Scouts, but we want all units to know that the ship’s crew welcomes Cub Scout groups for future tours and overnights. Troop 161 Scouts sledding Baltimore Penn Station Black History Exhibition HOPKINS DISTRICT SWIM DAY 2014 At the Hopkins District’s 2014 Swim Day, members of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity chapter at Johns Hopkins University helped Scouts improve swimming skills. This fun event served 24 Cub Scouts, Webelos and Boy Scouts, and many fulfilled requirements for advancement in swimming or sports. It was especially exciting for the three who were raw beginners and received individual attention. Several of the participating volunteers are Eagle Scouts, and one is a Den Leader. Thank you, Betas! Law Enforcement Exploring provides educational training programs for young adults on the purposes, mission, and objectives of law enforcement. The program provides career orientation experiences, leadership opportunities, and community service activities. The primary goals of the program are to help young adults choose a career path within law enforcement and to challenge them to become responsible citizens of their communities and the nation. In the Baltimore Area Council, Law Enforcement Exploring is available with the Annapolis Police Department, Howard County Police Dept, Anne Arundel County Police Department, Harford County Sheriff’s Department, Bel Air Police Department, Maryland State Police-Westminster Barrack, Maryland State Police-Golden Ring Barrack, Baltimore Police Department Central District and the Baltimore County Police Department. Each was developed and tested among youth participants in the program, adult volunteers, human resource recruiters, and college admissions counselors, using focus groups and quantitative research. All of the names selected were consistently highly received and represent the progressive nature of the new program rank requirements. Venturing Award – The first step in any journey is the courage to begin. At this level, the new crew member makes their commitment to join and move forward into the experience of Venturing. Discovery Award- The adventure of participating with the crew unfolds, and each Venturer begins to discover his or her interests and talents. As the Discovery Award recipients develop new skills and competencies, their eyes are opened and the world expands for them. Pathfinder Award – The Venturer’s capabilities and skills expand and with them come increased responsibility for defining their own way forward in life, service to others and formal planning and leadership of the crew toward its goals. Summit Award – The highest award of Venturing, the Summit Award, goes to those Venturers who have matured in their personal direction, skills, and life competencies, and who have accepted the responsibility to mentor others and serve their communities in a lasting way. The new program—to be released in full at the National Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tenn., May 21–23, 2014—is built around progressive experiences in the focus areas of Adventure, Leadership, Service, and Personal Growth. He spoke on Constitutional Rights and Obligations of American Citizens. These are the requirements for the First Class rank, and certainly what all Scouts should know He also covered both state and national concerns affecting Scouts and their parents. He spent considerable time answering questions about a broad range of topics from Scouts. One of the examples was on developing educational requirements for youth, and how staying in high school positively improved the future in Maryland. Senior Patrol Leader Matt Albert later presented him with a 50th anniversary patch or the Troop. Troop 944 will be celebrating its 50th year in 2014. Peitz. Scout Hero Lucas Hines Where they visited their relatives and attended the ACAREG’13 [Scout Jamboree CNE LEIRIA_ Portugal], representing BSA as Baltimorean Ambassadors. They learned new scout skills, made new friends, and started a USA/Portugal Scout Fellowship/Friendship Bridge. As Scout Ambassadors, from Baltimore they had a GREAT time and took many pictures to share with BSA friends. However, while organizing a set of color markers/ pencils with their cousin, Patricia, a huge Teka-wooden column/pillar began to fall towards her head. Lucas was the first one to see the leaning column. He reacted swiftly! Courageously, he jumped towards it and used his left arm to shield Patricia’s head. His brave action redirected the falling pillar from falling directly onto her head. However, the unattached Capital (pillar-top) rolled down, broke both bones on Lucas’ left arm, and opened a small gash on Patricia’s scalp. Pinewood Derby at Expo Fox 45 Expo While waiting for the ambulance, Lucas calmly rested his distorted broken arm on the ground (to prevent further harm) and rested his head on his mom’s lap. His scout brother Douglas, ran to get clean towels, water, and ice for his wounded cousin and brother. Douglas also took pictures of the pillar -- to show and explain to the doctors what had happened. But later went into shock. Lucas stayed 24 hours in the hospital to have surgery. The doctors inserted two metal rods/bars (Fios de Kirshner) inside his 2 broken bones. Patricia got 3 stitches to seal the cut on her scalp and left the hospital with 3 hours. However, if it wasn’t for Lucas’s bravery she might have been severely hurt or even killed. She is very thankful for Lucas’ quick thinking, action, and reaction. Lucas stayed calm throughout the entire ordeal. He knew, from scout training, that panic has no place in emergencies. Fox 45 B’more Expo In the end, says his mother Glaci, “we are all very lucky, blessed, and thankful that this tragic event did not turn out to be a terrible or fatal accident. Lucas’ brave and courageous action could well have saved his cousin’s life. We are very grateful for the training and for what the Scout Law still in all of us. We know that Lucas was better prepared for that extraordinary situation because he practices the 12 core of the Scout Law”. (Courtesy Photo) Tessa Hill-Aston, president of the Baltimore City Branch of the NAACP, recently was awarded for her work on behalf of local Boy Scouts. Hill-Aston, who encouraged the local NAACP branch to form a scout troop, was presented a Baltimore City Light Award by the Baltimore Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. She was honored at the organization’s 3rd Annual Baltimore City Lights Award Breakfast at the Forest Park Golf Club for her contribution to Boy Scouts and other young Baltimore residents. “Among the most important work I do as president is to…ensure opportunities for young people to become strong, stable and productive adults,” said Hill-Aston, in a statement. “The Baltimore City NAACP is proud of its partnership with the Boy Scouts and looks forward to a long lasting relationship that shares the proud tradition of scouting with boys in Baltimore. This award means a great deal to me because it represents my commitment to our city’s young men.” Besides starting a Boy Scout troop, the Baltimore City NAACP branch is supporting scouts by encouraging local businesses to discount supplies, uniforms and other necessities, the statement said. This did not hamper their spirits, the adults’ maybe. The seven sleds headed to their perspective towns waiting for the horn to sound. Once the horn sounded very enthusiastic youth headed for a fun day of events from fire building to harpoon heaving. By early afternoon the rain gave way to snow making the Klondike derby more realistic. By days end the kids and adult leaders were tired and wet, but their spirits were high. The Klondike Administration Team would like to thank all of the Town Mayors for the hard work making this event a success. And to the adult leaders who followed their sled teams all day in the cold. Congratulations to Crew 454 who came in 1st Place, Troop 731 for 2nd Place, Troop 454 for 3rd Place, and Troop 731 for winning Scout Spirit Award. All of the sleds did a great job running around the Davidsonville Family Recreation Center grounds in 6 inches of wet snow. Hope to see you next year. With the help of many volunteers and dedicated BSA professionals, The Capital District achieved SILVER Journey to Excellence! Everyone involved should be proud of this accomplishment. We are providing an excellent Scouting program for the youth of our district. Keep up the great work! We can also be proud of The Family Friends of Scouting crew under the leadership of Chris Ish and many others they are achieving outstanding results. Please coordinate presentation dates with the FOS personnel. The fundraising efforts directly help scouts and leaders within our district as well as our Council. The programming for the 2014 Camporee is gearing up please keep an eye on the BLAST for updates. Day Camp is a Boy Scouts of America (BSA) operated program that adheres to all safety standards and protocol that all Scouting activities require. The program consists of only BSA approved activities, and is run only by trained BSA leaders with each activity being lead by certified BSA staff. Each day camp runs by a coordinated theme. This year is the Medival Times. Which features horseback riding and campfire cook out. Cub Scout Day Camp is available for all registered Cub Scouts. This year, we are enthusiastic that we can bring Day Camp to Carrie Murray Nature Center in Leakin Park. With your support Day Camp has an opportunity to showcase in the largest continuous nature reserve in the country in the City limits. And to introduce all Baltimore City and County Scouts to the Leakin Park Community, and island environment – something unique to the other available camps. Each of the two week long Day Camps is manned by a staff of trained leaders, that consists of a Day Camp Director (who is a Scout Professional), Program Director, Business Manager, Aquatics Director, Crafts Director, Field Sports Director, Scout Craft Director, Program Aides and Health Officer. Boy Scouts who are age 14 or older are invited and encouraged to participate as Program Aides. Adult Staff often camp at the Day Camp site for the week, where Program Aides are eligible to camp out – this not only allows for oversight of scout property and equipment, but is an incentive for junior staff to participate in the program. Day Camp begins at 8:30 am with registration and ends at 3pm. Extended hours are available upon request. Day camp is scheduled for Mon July 7- Fri July 11 and again Mon July 14- Fri July 18.
