The energy savings associated with LED lights coupled with the greatly increased lifetime of the light source make the payback period for large scale investments in LEDs approximately 3 years, a significantly shorter time than the average usage lifetime of 50,000 hours, which is just shy of 6 years if the lights were run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. For comparison, the traditional incandescent bulb lasts on average 1,000 hours.” ~ Excerpt from a NADA web article illustrates the benefits of the new lighting technology. http://tinyurl.com/kwu3qk5 THE LAW CHANGED As of July 14, 2012, the standards for energy-efficiency in commercial lighting changed. The Department of Energy ruled to ban manufacturing in the U.S. of certain general-service fluorescent, incandescent and halogen reflector lights. Essentially this ban will eliminate lights with the lowest efficiency as well as cost from the market. Businesses should keep these important changes in mind because of future available lighting options. Standard incandescent lights and the bulbs listed below will become obsolete and prohibited: GENERAL-SERVICE FLUORESCENT LIGHTS: HALOGEN REFLECTOR LIGHTS: • All 2-ft. full-wattage and energy-saving U-shaped T12 lamps • All 75W F96T12 and 110W F96T12HO lamps • Most 4-ft. linear full-wattage and energy-saving T12 lamps • Most 60W F96T12/ES and 95W F96T12/ ES/HO lamps • R, PAR, BR, ER, BPAR and similar bulb shapes 130V products FLUORESCENT: • Magnetic T12 ballasts (since June 30, 2010). This regulation was set in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. RAPID ROI ON LIGHTING UPGRADES In a recent project with a business customer, SMC showed that the savings generated in the first year from lower electrical utility bills would pay for an entire lighting project. When coupled with available tax incentives and lower maintenance cost on the existing fixtures, the customer realized ROI even quicker. FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT YOUR SMC REPRESENTATIVE www.smcelectric.com INFO@SMCELECTRIC.COM TAX INCENTIVES Energy consumption drops 57 percent reducing the cost of lighting the facility by $9,877 annually. A projected cost of waiting included in the analysis proves that if the company waits to upgrade for one year, they lose $9,877 annually or $213.00 a month on the energy costs associated with lighting. LET SMC’S KNOWLEDGE BE YOUR POWER! Your business can take advantage of the Energy Efficient Commercial Buildings Tax Deduction or CBTD as a special financial incentive created by the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Designed to reduce the initial cost of investing in energy-efficient lighting and other building systems, the tax incentive works via an accelerated tax deduction. This special tax deduction allows building owners (or tenants) to write off the complete cost of upgrading a building’s indoor lighting, HVAC/ hot water and building envelope in the year the new equipment begins service, capped at $1.80/sq. ft. Alternately, the owner (or tenant) could upgrade one of these three systems to earn the CBTD capped at $0.60/sq. ft. In short, with the CBTD, you can claim the cost of new lighting or other building systems in a single tax year instead of amortized over a period of years. You need to complete qualifying projects before January 1, 2014, the current expiration date of the CBTD by the Energy Independence Act (EISA) of 2007. Additional local utility rebates might be available. For more information on tax incentives or utility rebates ask your SMC Representative. By replacing outdated incandescent fixtures, SMC lower Roper Kia’s wattage consumption by 64% from 38,800 to 13,496 annually and decreasing the heat created in their facility. The change measures the equivalent of eliminating 422 60-watt bulbs. The Roper Kia lighting project replaced 112 incandescent fixtures with LED and high efficiency florescent fixtures. They discovered immediate improvements for their employees with a brighter, safer and physically cooler work environment before receiving their first utility bill. LET’S GET STARTED!
