P R I D E 2015-2016 Volume 2 W h e r e W i n n i n g a n d E x c e l l e n c e i s t h e Status Quo! PRIDE is produced by the Ennis ISD Communication Depar tment in conjunction with the Ennis Daily News A message from Dr. John Chapman III Ennis ISD Superintendent Dear Ennis ISD Employees, I hope you’re off to a great 2015-2016 school year. We are glad to have you, and the students back to school. There are multiple organizations and people that I would like to thank that assisted the district in the weeks prior to the start of the school year. We want to give a special thanks to The Cotton Patch for providing a meal to our new teachers to the profession. The Cotton Patch fed 20 plus new teachers and administrators on August 12. Citizens Bank sponsored the new teacher luncheon on August 14th. The Ennis ISD Educational Foundation also graciously gave each of the 18 new teachers a $266.66 check to use at their discretion. On August 21st, the Avenue Church provided breakfast for the entire EISD staff. We are grateful for their hospitality. The district also fed the entire staff lunch on August 21st. A special thanks to the following individuals for cooking the meal prior to the event: Willie Joe Salik, Jeremy Salik, Bradley Salik, Wes Oldlozil, Alan Linson, Brian Harlan, Scott Stevens, Philip Black, John Peterson, Chad Corbett, Cliff Mathes, and Paul Nies. A special shout-out to Ryan McCabe for the long hours of organization making sure the meal was prepared. He went above and beyond to ensure the food was ready. Sodexo did a great job assisting with the meal trimmings. During the Opening of School Ceremonies, many people played an important role in the event. The Boy Scout Troop #210 presented the Colors which included Collin McManus, Alex Pierce, Sean Coplen, Justin Mraz and Chase Newsom. Sheridan Blazek, FFA President, conducted a roll call and called the meeting to order while Andrew Nicolayson, NHS President, lead the Pledges to our US and Texas flags. Nathan Diaz, Student Council President, gave the invocation and Alli Hoffman, State Choir Qualifier, sang “For Good”. Our awesome EHS band played multiple pieces throughout the ceremonies. Thank you and great job to our young friends Marilee Del Barrio, Ava Dominguez, Jake Cherry, Lilly Walker, Autumn Cooper and Mark Perez for coming out on stage to sit in the blue chairs and ask the audience if they believed. At that age, that was not an easy task. I truly appreciate the heartfelt messages from our very own home grown EISD staff members Kathy Matous, Wade Bishop, Tracy Lemonia, Keith Howard and Susan Jones. Thanks to everyone that made the event special. During the spring and summer, the administration was hard at work preparing for the upcoming year. Many positive things took place that benefit instruction at Ennis ISD. Over the past few months, the Board of Trustees has diligently spent a total of $1,625,077.00 in the area of curriculum and instruction as well as salaries. • Below is a breakdown of the spending: • Curriculum materials the Board of Trustees approved: $672,999.00. An example of some of the items include math manipulatives and leveled reader libraries which totaled $200,000.00. This allows us to continue to build a solid educational foundation at the elementary campuses. Teachers need the resources to meet the demands of the state assessment and to further the multimodal learning of students as they learn in different ways. In May 2015, the Board approved the purchase of phonics programs, special education tier systems, Read 180, leveled book rooms, and reading invention programs for teachers to continue to raise the bar on academic success which totaled roughly $473,000.00. • In the fall of 2014, the district asked the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) to conduct a competitive review of our teacher salaries and stipends. Ennis ISD received two recommendations for increases. Not only did EISD Board approve the increases, but the district added additional funds above and beyond TASB’s highest recommendation. The total cost of the increase in compensation for the 2015-2016 school year is $837,078.00. Teacher salary raises increased a minimum of $1,200 with a percent range from 2.1%-4.5%. • The District will provide another incentive totaling $230,000.00 for (2015-2016) that will be announced later in the year. • The Teacher/Employee Recruitment and Retention Program (TERRP) is a plan that will supplement the 403(b)/457 employee plans with District contributions. The District will match 50% of employee deferrals up to 2% of pay for employees not exceeding eight absences during the plan year. The District will match 75% of employee deferrals up to 3% of pay for employees with excellent attendance, not exceeding two absences during the plan year. The District will match 100% of employee deferrals up to 4% of pay for employees with perfect attendance during the plan year. During the last calculated year (August 31, 2014) the district paid out a total of $234,185.45. During that year, we had 289 participants. Today, we are close to 500 participates in the TERRP program which means EISD will contribute a lot more money to the TERRP program for the 20142015 school year (which is calculated on August 31, 2015). Facts to Share: • Ennis Ford / Educational Foundation plans to donate a new car (again in 2015-2016) to an EHS student with perfect attendance. • The athletic booster club along with a private donation allowed the purchase of two drones for the athletic program. The district did not use local funds to purchase the drones. • The EISD Educational Foundation awarded over $50,000 in teacher grants this past May for the 2015-2016 school year. We are so fortunate to have booster clubs and local businesses assist the district in purchasing items so that we can spend as much money as possible on employee salaries and instructional materials that will benefit all children. Again, thank you for being here and doing your best with student on a daily basis. Ennis Lion Cross Country help clean Jaycee Park Ennis Cross Country runners rolled up their sleeves and did their share of community service recently. The team met early one Saturday morning to gather trash and fallen branches at Jaycee Park here in Ennis. Ennis High Cross Country coach Lonnie Redning said the team chose Jaycee Park because they train and compete there. 2015 Lionettes Fall Dance Clinic set for Sept 12 All students grades Pre-K through high school are invited to participate.
