HIP HOP IN SCHOOLS
HOW POPULAR CULTURE CAN HELP EDUCATE STUDENTS
Hip Hop is a multicultural world phenomenon which has influenced all aspects of human existence. At its
inception, Hip Hop was introduced and designed to safely entertain and help educate the youth. Primarily through
song, dance, and art; young men and women were encouraged to play safely, respect authority, educate
themselves, protect their families, and community. There are many ways to use this popular culture in our
traditional school system but, Windows of Hip Hop (WOHH), wants to focus on helping you all better engage your
students.
WOHH has developed programs with Hall of Fame recording artist and performer Grand Master Melle
Mel. As a pioneer of Hip Hop, platinum recording artist, and Smithsonian inductee, Grand Master Melle Mel is
uniquely positioned to utilize his work and life to inspire today’s students. Grand Master Melle Mel has been a
proponent of healthy exercise, diet and staying fit for over 20 years. He has developed routines and practices
which can be introduced to young men & women which will help them stay fit and remember the importance of
exercise.
Also, Grand Master Melle Mel has a “call and response” routine which can be used to teach local history.
We find it productive to start local and reintroduce local historical figures. Whatever town, village, or borough we
can be assured that there is enough compelling history local to your students which we can share using Hip Hop.
By using popular musical expression to share simple history, we encourage the students to delve deeper into
learning about their environment.
Finally, Grand Master Melle Mel has developed a program which celebrates education, educators, and
learning. Grand Master Melle Mel is a big fan of education and supports many different efforts to increase
children’s desire to learn. At one time education was very important in our communities and an understanding of
the need to educate oneself was paramount. Learning to speak well, add correctly, and to have a curiosity about
the world, it’s inhabitants, and how it all works were all worthwhile pursuits. “Get Cool for School” emphasizes the
power of education and the reality of how one succeeds in today’s economy.

TO HIGH SCHOOL
STUDENTS
Windows of Hip Hop has also developed curriculum
for those of High School age. On today’s campuses
bullying, truancy, and the drop out rate are issues
which heavily impact the school body. Our team has
developed theatrical productions which address
issues like gang awareness, drug abuse, and
abandoned families. We recognize many students
face personal issues which limits their effective
participation in their education thereby stifling their
dreams. Let us help your team reach at risk youth
and
improve
the
work
from
underperforming
students. High School students are faced with social
pressures many teachers and school staff are
unprepared to meet. Our team has experience
