2. LOOK: for visual signs that would indicate
the severity and type of injury such as swelling,
loss of motion, deformity or bleeding.
he proper injury recognition and management
steps are vital when faced with an injury situation. A Hockey Trainer must always be
prepared to respond quickly and effectively and
apply the following techniques for assessment of
an injured player which are essential in the recognition of a lifethreatening injury .
Trainer’s
Corner
The first step is always to evaluate and assess whether a life
threatening situation exists.
1. STOP: evaluate the surrounding environment and approach the player with caution. Remove any hazards (e.g.
broken sticks) before touching the player. Always put on
your barrier protection gloves. The player should never be
moved until you are sure that they are not severely injured.
Rule out the most serious injury first by assessing the level
of consciousness and make sure the player does not have
a spinal (neck or back) injury. Stay calm, be thorough and
do not rush your assessment. If there is any lost of consciousness—initiate the Emergency Action Plan and call an
ambulance.

AWARD
3. LISTEN: the most important part of the examination and assessment is the history and
mechanism of the injury. The player will usually tell
you what happened and where they are hurt.
4. FEEL: this is the last component of the
injury assessment. Feel gently so you will not
cause additional pain and being in areas which are away
from the injured area and move slowly towards the affected
area. Make note of any tenderness, swelling, and warmth.
PRIMARY CONSIDERATIONS:
>The possible severity of the injury.
>The immediate protection of the injury (e.g., neck stabilization)
>Whether the athlete should be moved.
>Whether the EAP should be put into action.
>Whether the player can continue to play.
>DO NO HARM

A SILVER Lining for SVR
Major Peewees
In league play, this team spirit and positive attitude continues to
shine even though the team’s performance has not earned them any
points in the divisional standings. Losing matches to the Gloucester
Rangers on Dec. 14 (9-2: goals scored by Dakota Seaman and Xandre Seguin), the RSL Kings on Dec. 17 (7-2: goals scored by Harrison
Fraser and Kurt Alexander), the Silver Seven on Jan 4 (6-1: goal
scored by Lochlan MacDonald), and the Ottawa Sting on Jan. 9 (14-1:
goal by MacDonald), the boys have not hung their heads, nor given
up hope that at some point they will surprise everyone and notch a
win.
The team came quite close to doing just that on Jan. 12 playing versus the Silver Seven in Perth when just minutes into the third period,
the SVR team tied the game 3-3. The Ottawa Valley team rallied to
pull ahead, pocketing two goals in a row just 5 minutes apart, but the
Rapids players continued to press forward with tenacity and answered back with two goals of their own. In the end, the Seven pulled
ahead by one, ending the game 6-5 in their favour. Carter Tait is to
be congratulated for his five goal game, a special moment for him
following the recent passing of his grandfather, Clayton Shaver. Tait,
who had taped his stick with “#10 CS” in memory of his grandfather,
was very moved by the excitement of his team mates and the parents
over his game play. Assists to the goals came from Jayden Martelle,

ment for the SVR team whose season is close to being finished after a
difficult year in the league.
Leading up to the Rochester tournament, the Rapids played three
league games, all of which ended in losses for the team. In a 6-1 defeat to the Cumberland Grads, Lochlan Macdonald scored the lone
goal (from Kurt Alexander and Xandre Seguin). On the Kanata Blazer’s home ice, the Rapids team was trounced 13-1, with Seguin scoring for the SVR team (from Alexander and Carter Tait). The Peewee
team also fell to the Gloucester Rangers 5-0.
On tournament ice, the outcomes were much more positive for the
Seaway Valley team. Playing their first game against the Webster
Cyclones, the Rapids took control of the game early, logging 5 goals
in the first two periods. Although the Cyclones fought hard in the
third period to close the gap and take over the scoreboard, a final goal
for the Rapids team sealed the deal, ending the game 6-4. Players
who scored for the squad include: Tait (3), Cruickshank, Seguin, and
Alexander (assists to Seguin (3), Tait (2), and Campbell Craig).
The SVR team next faced the Amherst Knights. At the end of the
second period, the Knights were in the lead with a score of 3-2, but in
a third period battle for the win, the Rapids pulled ahead after scoring 4 goals to Amherst’s 2, ending the game 6-5. Goals were logged
by Alexander (Cruickshank), Macdonald (Harrison Fraser), Craig
(Seguin), Fraser (Craig), Seguin (Alexander), and Nolan Shane.

period scoring two unanswered goals. In third period action, the
Blades scored 3 goals to the Rapids 1 (Dakota Seaman), bringing the
score to 5-2 in favour of Perinton. The final game of round robin play
faced the SVR team against the Clarence Mustangs. The game
proved to be highly charged and ended in another close final score.
After two periods, the Mustangs owned the game with a 1 goal lead;
however, the Rapids came on hard in third period action to tie the
game 4-4. Netting goals for the Seaway Valley team were Craig

Ron has just completed his 42nd season of coaching with the
South Grenville Minor Hockey Association in the Initiation
Program (IP). He has remained with this program since he
first started coaching in 1972 and has been a coach and executive member during the course of many years.
Ron was instrumental in developing a beginner program
where player skills were developed through playing a series
of games, without hockey sticks or pucks and as players progressed they were promoted to the next group. His dedication
to the very young is more than exemplary. The present day
IP program is constructed very similar to the program that
Ron started over 40 years ago.
He has been nominated and presented with many Hockey

is overwhelmingly deserving of this award.
