Date: Thursday, July 28th (rain date 8/4) Time: 7pm Book Discussions– Copies available at Circulation Desk at time of prior discussion Friday, July 15th: Tom Rachman’s novel, The Imperfectionists, a tongue-in-cheek description of the lives of a group of English language based newspaper people, is set in Rome and has received critical raves. Each chapter focuses on a different person, yet the book is not a series of short stories. It is tied together over a period of fifty years, covering diversified events from the Virginian Tech massacre to unrest in the middle East. Although fiction, Rachman manages to date each story and give it a sense of reality. Alyce Barnett will moderate. Friday, August 19th: The Glass Room by Simon Mawer is a novel of architecture, art and love that was long listed for this year‟s Man Booker Prize for Fiction. The home at the heart of the novel is the opposite of primitive. The architect wishes to “take Man out of the cave and float him in the air.” His ambition, he announces, is to build a house of glass. Set in Czechoslovakia, the novel explores peoples‟ hopes and aspirations in a moving read. Mira Sennett will moderate.
