There is so much competition for our children’s
time in the summer. But let’s not forget the
value of a camp experience — camp is a gift
we can give our children that they will benefit
from and remember forever.
Parents often share with us how the camp
experience changed their son(s). One
commonly communicated sentiment has been
“You took my boy and he came home more like
a young man.
So... get your son off the couch, get his blood
rushing, and keep his mind active! Talk to your
Cubmaster, Den Leader or Scoutmaster to
find out when your unit is attending camp this
summer. If you can’t make it during that time,
contact Scott to register for another session.

Unit Serving Executive! James is a 2010 graduate of Viterbo University
and holds a degree in Biopsychology. James has a background in the
Scouting program and with Samoset Council. He worked at the Crystal
Lake Scout Reservation for 7 years and is now very excited to get started
in the Ojibwa District. Please welcome James to the Samoset family when

Council President
What a great time it is to be involved in Scouting in
the Samoset Council! We are so happy to serve with
the best volunteers in the Boy Scouts of America.
It was great to see so many of those volunteers at
the University of Scouting a few weeks ago. It was
inspiring to see how much our Scouters care about
providing the best quality program for youth. Thank
you to the entire University of Scouting leadership
team for putting on such a great day of training and
fun!
As the snow melts and we move from our winter
camping season to our spring and summer camping
season we are reminded that it is great to be involved
in Scouting “Where Camping is King!” We are proud
to offer Scouts and their families the very best camping
programs. We hope to see you at camp this summer,
it’s not too late to make plans to attend with your den,
pack, troop or Crew.
We are excited to share with everyone that our
council is one of twelve councils across the country
chosen to participate in the Boy Scouts of America’s
STEM Scouts Pilot Program. This is an incredible
opportunity for our council and we are thrilled to be
part of the development process for STEM Scouting.
We are eager to share more details about this with
our Scouters and our communities. Stay tuned for
more about STEM Scouts. This is a tremendous
opportunity for us to reach more youth and families
with the benefits of Scouting.

year in 2015. It is fun to be a part of the Scouting
movement in the Samoset Council. We recognize
the Scouting program in our council is only as strong
as each Cub Scout Den. Each Boy Scout Patrol or
Troop. Each Venturing Crew. Each Exploring Post.
We are committed to doing all we can to provide
our unit volunteers with the training, resources and
support needed to deliver amazing Scouting programs

Annual Program Planning
2015-2016 Resource Guide
Let’s talk about one of the key elements of all successful
units and an indicator of a potentially successful year.
Of course that would be the unit’s annual planning
meeting.
Providing a year-round quality Scouting program is
the key to unit success. Samoset Council wants to
make sure you have the tools and resources to make
this happen. The 2015-2016 resource guide will be
available in June. We encourage each unit to spend
time this summer planning activities for the next
Scouting year and building an active outdoor program.
First Step to a Successful Unit Program
A research project conducted by the BSA showed that
a common element of strong packs is they all have a
good annual pack program planned a year in advance
that is then shared with all families in the form of a
calendar. The important result of a shared annual
program calendar is that your pack will attract more
families, and Scouts will stay for a long time.
Just as an aside, the other two key elements of
successful packs identified in that study were training
and just having the right leader to start with.

First Step to a Successful Unit Program
STEM Scouts
Coming This Fall
STEM Scouts is a new coed Scouting program that’s
been piloted in the Great Smoky Mountain Council for
the past six months to attract young people to Scouting
who are interested in science, technology, engineering
and math.
The Samoset Council has been selected as one of
twelve councils to participate in the STEM Scouts
program, pending their board approval:

STEM Scouts is a significant program for the BSA –
especially as we continue to innovate ways to extend
Scouting’s values and life-changing experiences to
reach more youth. STEM Scouting is a co-ed program
for youth in grades 3-12. The program is designed to
be fast-paced, thought provoking, and fun. Kids learn
how to apply STEM in their everyday lives and toward
future careers. Stay tuned for more details about
STEM Scouting in the Samoset Council.

Summertime Pack Award
Scouting
Just as Cub Scouts can earn individual awards for
themselves, they can also work together to earn
awards for their den and pack! A pack can earn the
National Summertime Pack Award by doing three
pack activities when school is out for the summer—
one activity each in June, July, and August. Packs that
qualify get a colorful streamer for their pack flag. Dens
that have at least half of their members at the three
events can earn a den ribbon. Scouts who take part in
all three events are eligible for the Summertime Award
pin. There is a different color pin for each Cub Scout
rank so earning the pin each year has more incentive.
A huge thanks to the Scouts, leaders, parents and
volunteers who made this year’s food drive possible
and a success. With your leadership we collected
around 51,000 item of food and donated these to
over 50 local food pantries. A special thanks to Russ
Prusak, Mike Klement, Brian Bennett, Al Schult and
Joe Theisen.

Make your activities fun and simple. Many Packs plan
family picnics, sports outings, and ice cream socials
to keep boys active in between district Cub Scout day
camps and Akela’s World. Cub Scouts will gain a
sense of accomplishment when receiving this award,

Making a Difference
It’s hard to believe it is already May. Another year in
the Samoset Council is off to an incredible start and the
summer camping season is right around the corner.
During the first few months of every year, families are
asked to participate in our annual Friends of Scouting
Campaign. We are so grateful to the individuals and
families that make Scouting in our council possible
with their generous financial support.
It takes countless volunteer hours and a tremendous
amount of financial resources to deliver the greatest
youth development program in the world to the
thousands of youth in north-central Wisconsin. In
the Samoset Council we are blessed with amazing
volunteers and we recognize the incredible impact of
their service on behalf of youth. We also recognize
those who give financial support. It is through the
generous support of our donors that we are able to
amplify the positive impact of our volunteers.
Thank you for your participation in the 2015 Friends
of Scouting campaign. So far we have raised over
$200,000 for Scouting in 2015. Your donations are
making a positive difference for our youth!

Fun, Challenge, Adventure, Learning, Excitement!
That’s how Scouts describe the National Youth
Leadership Training Conference (NYLT). Strengthen
your skills, improve your knowledge, and become a
better leader!
The Wood Badge Adult Leadership course is
structured for all adult leaders in Scouting. Leadership
is the focus – all aspects of leadership including,
team building, communication, conflict management,
project planning and many others. But this course is
not just about listening, it is about doing. Participants
will practice the skills they have learned, in both an
indoor and an outdoor setting, using solid, hands on
practice to gain a greater understanding of modern
leadership techniques which have application for
today’s Scout leader. At the same time we will reinforce
and demonstrate the aims and methods of Scouting ,
based on the best of Scouting . The skills you learn in
this course will not only benefit yourself, but will have
lasting impacts on your Scouts, your family and even
your colleagues at work and in Scouting.
NYLT centers around the concept of what leaders
must BE, what leaders must KNOW and what they
must DO. This course is designed to provide youth
leaders with skills and experiences they can use in
their own troop. Leadership skills are taught with a
clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during
the week as the patrol goes on a quest for the meaning
of leadership.

The “Arts and Sciences”
The largest single-day supplemental training was held
on March 21 at John Muir Middle School in Wausau.
165 Scouters and 71 Scouts experienced a fun-filled
day of training and activities provided by over 70
volunteers.
Courses were offered in Cub Scout studies (“You’re
Not Alone – Resources for Den Leaders”), Boy Scout
studies (“Realistic First Aid”), Venturing studies (“Fun
Team Building Games”), and general Scout studies
(“Help Wanted for Success: Recruiting Volunteers”).
Commissioners were offered a curriculum ranging from
basic training to advanced courses in the College of

Commissioner Studies. Youth attending the University
had courses too, including an option to work towards
a Nova award.
Associate’s degrees were awarded to 67 Scouters,
and 48 Scouters earned their Bachelor’s degree. In
addition, 19 commissioners continued their education
in the commissioner degree program.
This year we were honored to have former Green Bay
Packer football player and Eagle Scout Bill Ferrario
speak at our commencement ceremony. Every youth
in attendance received an autographed photo of Bill at
graduation.

Frenzy Full of Food, Fellowship, and Fun! Come to
Fall Conference to elect the lodge officers, catch up
with friends, play awesome games in the afternoon,
including a lodge wide activity, and most importantly
meet new people.
Mark your calendars and plan to join us for Fall
Conference at Camp Tesomas. This event is well
worth its cost and is free to all arrowmen called out
this summer. Registration is available online.
Check-in begins Friday at 6:00 PM in the Tesomas
Program Center. Please bring a tent and appropriate
camping gear. Meals will be provided.
Section C-1B Conclave
ArrowTour
July 23, 2015
The purpose of the tour is to commemorate the Order
of the Arrow’s 100th anniversary. During the event,
participants will have the opportunity to learn about
the Order of the Arrow, its story, and its future. Some
of the program highlights include interactive exhibits,
activities such as silk-screening and branding, and
challenge games. Participants will have a chance to
meet some of the Order’s national leaders, and alumni
can learn about the Scouting Alumni Association and
local alumni efforts to supporting Scouting in our area.

This section consists of about 3,500 OA members from
your lodge and 5 others, and includes regions in the
great states of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Each
September the lodges in the section hold a sectionwide weekend event called the Section Conclave.
This is basically a large gathering of members from all
lodges in the section. What’s great about the Section
Conclave is that it offers a fun, action-packed program
while still being affordable and open to any and all
Arrowmen who want to do something truly awesome
in their Scouting career.

Tesomas
The Samoset Council is excited to announce it will
celebrate the Order of the Arrow’s centennial as an
ArrowTour host. ArrowTour is an interactive event
for Scouts, volunteers, and Scouting alumni that will
travel throughout the country during the summer of
2015. The tour will make a stop on July 23, 2015 at
Tesomas Scout Camp in Rhinelander WI.
September 18-20, 2015
This year, the Section Conclave will be held September
18-20 at L.E. Phillips Scout Reservation. At the
conclave, there will be many great training sessions
led by knowledgeable trainers, a dunk tank, patch
trading, an awesome campfire/show, and so much
more. Along with this you get the chance to meet
hundreds of people from other lodges. Visit the TKC

ArrowTour and OA centennial merchandise.
The program will conclude with a special show that
recognizes the Order’s rich history and empowers
participants to help shape the organization’s
future. The Order of the Arrow is creating a truly

The tour will open at 1:00 pm and will conclude at 5:00

Spring Work Trek
Thank You
Each year more than 200 Scouts and Scouters come
out to help prepare camp for another summer season.
After a long winter, our camps were definitely in need
of some help. On behalf of the campers, staff and
leaders - Thank You! Over 1,600 hours of service work
was completed on May 2, 2015. The camp staff looks
forward to seeing everyone at camp this summer.
Samoset Camps Alumni Association
80th Reunion
June 12-14, 2015
Samoset Council has been blessed with great camping
programs since the council was formed in 1920. This
summer, the Crystal Lake Scout Reservation will
celebrate its 80th summer. What better way to start
the summer, then with a party celebrating our history,
traditions and friendships.
The SCAA invites everyone to join us June 12-14
to celebrate and remember all the wonderful times
that Samoset Camping has offered. Fellowship and
activities abound, bring the entire family, there will be
plenty of things for those of all ages to enjoy.
The cost for the weekend is $25 per person or $45 per
family. This includes meals, program and camping.
Registration is available on the Samoset website.

CLSR Long Range Plan
Visioning the future…Where Camping Is King
Over the last two years, volunteers and professionals
have been reviewing the needs of the Crystal Lake
Scout Reservation. The purpose of this review was
to develop a 20 year vision for the Reservation that
allows the Samoset Council to proactively develop
the property and programs to meet the needs of our
campers.
The final master plan will create opportunities that
inspires both youth and leaders for generations
to come. It includes not only new facilities and an
improved camp infrastructure, but more importantly it
creates new programs and learning centers that will
excite Scouts and invite them to return to our camps
again and again.
The detailed plan will be shared over the summer with
units, Scouters and parents.

Family Fishing Weekend
Fall Cub Camp
Come for the day Saturday or Sunday or join us for the
whole weekend. Bring your own gear or borrow some
of ours. There is plenty of opportunities to fish from
shore and those with a current swim test can use our
canoes and rowboats.
Fall Cub Camp is open to new and current Cub Scouts
and their families. We encourage as many Scouts as
possible to attend, with their parents and siblings.
Offered the first weekend in October; you can attend
either Saturday or Sunday.
This event is in conjunction with the Wisconsin DNR’s
Free Fishing Weekend. Residents & nonresidents of
all ages can fish without a license over these two days.
Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast
will be available for $4 per meal.
Activities start at 9 AM preceded by registration. Then
it is off to the program areas, singing, hiking, archery,
BB guns, slingshots and having fun at the premier Cub
Scout camp in the nation. Lunch is served in the Dining
Hall, followed by more programs throughout the camp.
Departure is around 3:30 PM in the afternoon.

Family Adventure Weekend
September 4-7, 2015
Share the thrill of the outdoors with your entire family.
We will provide some of your camp favorite activities
such as climbing and archery. There will also be plenty
of open time for hiking, fishing and boating.
Webelos Fall Adventure
September 25-27, 2015
From the moment that your son and his fellow Webelos
arrive at Tesomas till they depart Sunday afternoon,
he will be immersed in a program based solely around
the Webelos experience. Campers will experience
what awaits them in Boy Scouting. This event is open
to Scouts registered as a Webelos in the fall of 2014
and their parents. More information will be available
this summer!
October 3 or 4, 2015
Provisional Week
August 9-15, 2015
The provisional troop at Tesomas is a chance for
Scouts to spend a week at camp who could not
attend with their home unit, or a chance to attend an
additional week of Summer Camp at a reduced rate.
Individual scouts are placed in a troop of other scouts
from all over the mid-west. Boys in the provisional
troop experience camp in a different troop atmosphere
while making many new friends. Adult leadership for
the troop is provided by Samoset Council.
The cost of attending the provisional troop is
• $255 (Samoset Scout) / $285 (out of council
Scout)
• $135 Adult
• A discounted rate of $199 is available for any
Scout who has attended Tesomas Scout Camp
during the 2015 summer camp season and will
be participating in the provisional troop as a
second week.
Registration is requested no later than July 15, 2015.

Polar Cubs
Hanna Winter Resort
Polar Cubs is a unique winter program for Cub Scouts
and their families. Campers are grouped into “Super
Dens” that rotate through various activities led by staff
members. The program focuses on outdoor winter
adventure.
Hanna Winter Resort aims to provide everything Boy
Scouts and Venturers need to have an incredible
outdoor winter experience. Enjoy the pristine winter
northwoods environment around the Base and the
freedom to do nearly any winter activity you want
whenever you want.
January & February 2016
Overnight registration includes a bunk in one of our
many heated cabins, indoor showers and restrooms
as well as two or three meals prepared for you.
Between meals campers will have the opportunity to
go snowshoeing, sledding, play broomball and much
more. Campers who do not wish to spend the night
with us can signup just for the day.
Polar Cubs runs four alternating weekends in January
and February. Campers have the option of a Friday
night or Saturday night stay.

Summer Camp 2016
Are You Signed Up?
Units should register for summer camp a year in
advance. This allows families to plan their schedules
around these events. Reservations for 2016 summer
camp are now open for Packs, Troops and Crews.
Samoset Council, Boy Scouts of America
January & February 2016
Registration includes a bunk in one of our many heated
cabins, indoor showers and restrooms as well as four
meals prepared for you. Between meals campers can
use our snowshoes, broomball equipment, ice fishing
gear, and sleds. In the evening, participants will have
a chance to use the indoor climbing wall. You can also
arrange to build a snow shelter and sleep in it over
night.
Registration for winter camp opens
September 1st. Units can reserve
space with a $5 per person deposit.
