rEMARCable Ramblings
What’s New?
Letter From The Director
-Fall 2014Emarc’s Special Olympic Soccer teams, the Rockets and the
Revolution each went 3-0 and placed first at the SOMA State
Competition.
Hello Emarc Recreation Families,
Twenty-five families came out to the Family Support Center’s Fall
Family Festival at Smolak Farms, participating in face painting,
cookie decorating, pumpkin painting, hay rides, music and games!
It is with great pleasure that I am introducing myself in this year’s
Winter/Spring brochure as the new Director of Emarc Recreation! I
am extremely excited to get to know the individuals that our
recreation programs have the privilege to serve as well as their
families and friends.
The Sibs won the Dunkin’ Donuts KidZone tickets, and attended a
Bruins game in December.
Twenty-two athletes from Emarc’s Residential Program competed at
the Special Olympics Senior Sports Classic in race walking, bocce and
horseshoes.
Kids in Splash Saturdays, a new ocean-themed kids respite program
(details on page 4), have been learning about the ocean while
engaging in social activities and swimming.
The After-Hours Bowling program is celebrating it’s 6th year, and
running strong!
We kicked off the school-year Adapted Aquatics program (details on
page 4), with the help of over 45 High School and adult volunteers
from the Metro-North Area.
Bootcamp (details on page 9) opened a second class night!
Collin Laflamme, our new Recreation Director, joined the Emarc
team in December!
Take the POLAR PLUNGE for
Emarc’s Special Olympics Teams!
Are you brave enough to take the plunge?
Emarc is looking for members to join our
2015 Polar Plunge Team!
The money we raise supports all of our Special Olympic programs
throughout the year with equipment, gym
rentals, uniforms and tournament fees! If you would like to join our
team or make a donation, check out www.polarplungema.org and find
The r”Emarc”ables
(Local Program #0206 - Emarc).
I would like to take this opportunity to provide a little background
about myself. I am a 2012 graduate of the University of New
Hampshire, where I studied Therapeutic Recreation. After
graduating from UNH, I worked with an organization called
Northeast Passage that offers adaptive sports and recreation
programming for individuals with disabilities as well as School Based
Recreation Therapy services for kids and young adults. In addition to
my work with other regional non-profit adaptive recreation
organizations, I founded a non-profit organization in 2012 called
Access Outdoors New England that offers adaptive outdoors
programming for individual’s with disabilities. I love working in the
non-profit community because it allows me to work alongside
people who are passionate about those they serve and allows for a
greater understanding of community collaboration to meet a
common goal. I have spent my entire undergraduate and
professional career volunteering and working with non-profit
organizations, and I am overjoyed to be able to bring those
experiences with me in my new position as the Director of
Recreation for Emarc.
I look forward to the opportunity to grow and improve the already
stellar Recreation department Emarc offers to individuals and their
families in Northeastern Massachusetts. I have already had the
pleasure of meeting several of the families we support, and I look
forward to meeting more as our winter and spring programs begin. I
am excited to be here as the Director of Recreation. If you have any
questions, comments, concerns, or most importantly feedback/
suggestions, please do not hesitate to call or email me directly.
Sincerely,
Collin Laflamme

Splash Saturdays! (ages 8-12)
A Saturday Respite for Kids!
Splash Saturdays is an aquatics and ocean
themed program that will challenge kids to
work on social skills, build friendships,
practice their swimming while also learning
about the ocean; All while playing games and
working as a team to have FUN! The kids will
get into the pool for a portion of the day to
practice their swimming skills and safety
around water. Participants please come wearing swim suits and
bring a towel or any floatation devices needed.
This program is run with support from the Metro North Area Office
of the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) through Family
Support. Scholarships available through the Recreation Department.
Participants must live at home in the Metro North Area (Everett,
Lynnfield, Malden, Medford, Melrose, North Reading, Reading,
Saugus, Stoneham, Wakefield) AND have completed DDS eligibility.
Sibshops are pedal-to-the-metal celebrations of the many
contributions made by brothers and sisters of kids with special
needs. Sibshops acknowledge that being the brother or sister of
a person with special needs is for some a good thing, others a
not-so-good thing, and for many, somewhere in between. They
reflect a belief that brothers and sisters have much to offer one
another - if they are given a chance. Sibshops are a spirited mix of
new games (designed to be unique, off-beat, and appealing to a
wide ability range), new friends and discussion activities.
Emarc offers Sibshops for ages 4-7 and 8-13, along with a teen group
for 8-12th graders (find Teen Sibs on page 6!) For the most up to
date schedule, join our Sibshop mailing list at www.theemarc.org.
Enter your email address in the top right corner to “Sign up for our
Email Newsletter.” On the next screen, click “Sibshops.” *This list will
only be used for Sibshop related communication. For more
information, please contact Collin Laflamme 781-587-2382 or

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
READING MUSIC THERAPY (ages 3-7)
THANK YOU, JOE!
Are you ready to make some music? We will use the fun and
motivation of music to address the social, behavioral and
sensory goals of participants. Children will be singing,
playing a variety of instruments and moving to the
music as they engage in supportive and therapeutic
music making. Goals may include increasing
communication skills, turn taking, joint attention and
learning songs that can carry-over into the home. Parent attendance
is required – This is not a drop off program. Group will be led by
Kristina Barbo, MT-BC.
Joe Casey, a Special Olympics head coach for Emarc,
has been coaching Track, Soccer and Basketball for the
past 5 years. He has had the opportunity to get to
know many athletes over the years, and coach the
athletes to winning a number of awards. To Joe, one
of the best parts about working with the teams is
helping the athletes accomplish new feats; specifically, one of his
favorite moments is seeing a track athlete finish the 50 yard dash for
the first time in competition. Seeing the joy a family experiences is
priceless. To any volunteer or athlete who is interested in
participating in Special Olympics, Joe says, “ It’s worth being a part
of and it will bring joy and a sense of accomplishment to any one
who tries. These athletes care about each other and the families
make a wonderful community.”

Matt Tetrault has been lending a
creative hand to Emarc’s recreation
department for many of our Special
Olympic Sports teams. He has donated
his time to creating a number of our
sports team logos for new. All of our
athletes look forward to wearing these
uniforms, which symbolizes being a
part of a team. Matt is also a fantastic
photographer and also donated his
time this past October in to taking
pictures at Emarc’s Tucker Gala. We
greatly appreciate the time he has put
into helping the recreation
department provide team uniforms!
Emarc is lucky to have had over 300 volunteers dedicate over 7,800
hours in 2014 to the Recreation, Residential, Administrative and Day
Service programs. THANK YOU!
