ANNUAL REPORT 2012 Now is the perfect time. . . to advance research, education and health care. Mission Statement The mission of the Foundation of UMDNJ, an affiliate of New Jersey Health Foundation, is to advance programs at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey through private sector support. To promote excellence in the education of healthcare professionals, in biomedical research and in healthcare delivery, the Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation governed by a volunteer board, solicits contributions to targeted programs and endowments throughout the University’s system of schools, healthcare facilities and affiliated institutes. n Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 (l-r): Dean Janeway Dr. George F. Heinrich James M. Golubieski Message from the Foundation If you are passionate about advancing research that will cure or provide better treatments for disease… If your desire is to make sure there are enough healthcare professionals in the future to care for you and your loved ones… If your goal is to help the underserved in your region and your state receive the healthcare services they desperately need… If you want to assure the highest quality healthcare services for children and adults of all ages … Now is the perfect time… and the Foundation of UMDNJ is the perfect organization to help you achieve your philanthropic goals. And our donors agree. At the Foundation of UMDNJ and its affiliate, New Jersey Health Foundation, we raised $20.7 million this year to fund UMDNJ programs and services. And 100 percent of those gifts—every dollar—went directly to support the causes they specified. We will continue to work with our donors, thousands of them, to raise and distribute funds for all UMDNJ schools, institutes, centers and programs. And through our organizational structure, we can continue to support those entities regardless of where they are housed. Although both are independent 501(c)(3) organizations, as a supporting organization, gifts to the Foundation of UMDNJ must be directed to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. However, because it was established with a broader mission and is a public charity incorporated in the state of Delaware, gifts to New Jersey Health Foundation can be distributed to a wide range of organizations that support research, education, health and human service activities. That’s how we can assure you that a gift made to either organization will follow the cause that you designate, regardless of where that service is housed or to whom it belongs. Now is the perfect time… for you to reaffirm your support of programs you may have funded in the past or to select a new area of research, education or patient care that you would like to support now or in the future. In this exciting time in health care, you can play a vital role in advancing the important programs that mean the most to you. We remain committed to working with you and others to advance the breakthrough science, excellent education and vital patient care programs offered in New Jersey. We hope you join us, or continue to work with us, in our efforts. n Dean Janeway Chair George F. Heinrich, MD Vice Chair and CEO James M. Golubieski President Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 3 Message from the Interim University President After decades of discussion about the future of UMDNJ and medical education in New Jersey, passage of the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act provides the foundation for our future direction. The new structure for health sciences education in our state—the Rutgers School of Biomedical and Health Sciences—offers new opportunities for all our schools and units to build upon our tradition of excellence in research, education, clinical care and community service through new and enhanced collaborations. The goals for the restructuring of higher education in New Jersey include enhancing educational opportunities for residents of the State and creating vibrant educational institutions and communities as we move into the future. UMDNJ’s outstanding schools and clinical units will contribute significantly to achieving this vision—a fact in which the entire University and our many supporters can take pride. Dr. Denise V. Rodgers Although this restructuring will be a vast and complex undertaking, we are confident that we can and will move forward with renewed energy and commitment. Unquestionably, this new school will become an even more powerful asset for New Jersey — greatly benefiting its residents, its economy and the global scientific community. The four missions of UMDNJ will continue to be critically important moving into the future under a new banner. We remain committed to the delivery of high-quality patient care, particularly to the most vulnerable in the communities we serve. We are committed to providing innovative, quality education programs in the biomedical sciences and health professions. We will continue to pursue new knowledge aimed at promoting health and relieving human suffering. And, of course, we will continue to partner with our host communities in economic development and in improving health outcomes. Thank you for your generous participation in the advancement of our mission and for sharing our faith in a future where excellence and integrity will continue to be the hallmark of all we do. We look to you for continued support through the Foundation of UMDNJ, knowing that your contributions are helping us to change lives for the better. n Denise V. Forman Senior Director of Development Christina Mosley Development Coordinator Donor Stories Supporting Healthy Births and Babies For nearly 75 years, the March of Dimes has become synonymous with promoting healthy pregnancies and healthy babies nationwide. Here in New Jersey, the organization is partnering with several University programs, awarding grants over the past year to help advance research, education and health care for patients and providers statewide. >> The Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at the School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) received a $20,000 gift to initiate the Centering Pregnancy Program, the first of its kind in South Jersey. The program offers prenatal care to low to middle-income clients and group education on nutrition, fetal development, gestational illnesses, and more. The gift will fund the purchase of patient-education materials, plus midwife and OB/GYN resident training during the two-year implementation period. “We’ve been interested in centering pregnancy for many years. The University is always looking to improve care, and we will continue to support its endeavors toward better pregnancy outcomes and healthy babies.” – Laurie Navin Director Program Services March of Dimes “Centering Pregnancy is based on old-fashioned prenatal classes, which studies show lower preterm birth rates, increase breastfeeding rates and reduce the incidence of postpartum depression—which is exactly what we want to achieve,” said Diane Reynolds, CNM, MSN, program director, and chief nurse midwife, in the department of OB/GYN at SOM. >> At the School of Public Health, a grant of $30,800 is enabling an evaluation of the March of Dimes’ Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait® program. Piloted in Kentucky, the program incorporates numerous interventions aimed at reducing preterm birth, the number-one cause of infant morbidity and mortality in the United States. Dr. Teresa Janevic is leading the team that will assess the program’s efficacy in Newark, where the preterm birth rate among African Americans is the highest in the state. “Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait® is a unique intervention because it targets multiple levels simultaneously, including providers, patients, and the community, in an effort to lower the rate of preterm births among African American mothers in Newark,” explained Dr. Janevic, assistant professor of epidemiology at the School and an active researcher in pregnancy health disparities. >> The University Hospital is using its gift of $55,000 from the March of Dimes to help eliminate preventable preterm birth rates as well, in collaboration with the Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait® initiative. A patient navigator has been hired to facilitate testing and referrals for expectant patients in Newark. “The March of Dimes support will have a tremendous impact on patient outcomes. We’ve already seen results to help maximize care and ultimately reduce risk,” noted Dr. Lisa Gittens-Williams, associate professor, obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health, at New Jersey Medical School. n Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 7 Donor Stories Making the Best Impression Thanks to a gift of five Lava™ Chairside Oral Scanners valued at $175,000 from 3M Community Cares, students at New Jersey Dental School (NJDS) are among an elite group of future dentists who will be trained in the latest impression technology. In addition to the scanners, the Minnesota-based company is also providing free training and technical support to the School. “We want to help prepare students for the digital age of dentistry, while supporting academic excellence and improving the patient experience,” says Chad E. Naughton, US Chairside marketing manager. “This was the perfect opportunity.” Dr. Hoda Youseff (r) with senior student Marissa Oriqel This state-of-the-art technology uses a wand, about the size of an electric toothbrush, to capture highly detailed, continuous 3D video images of a patient’s mouth. Displayed in real time on a computer monitor, the high resolution images enable the dentist to see all areas of the mouth in minute detail at a variety of angles. Based on what he or she sees, the dentist can often make an immediate assessment, using the information to fabricate the patient’s restoration, such as an inlay, crown, bridge or dentures. Because the impressions are extremely accurate, restorations are much less likely to need multiple adjustments. “This is the wave of the future,” said NJDS Dean Cecile Feldman. “This generous gift from 3M enables us to even better prepare our students and improve patient care.” Dean Feldman also noted that students will continue to learn traditional impressioning using a putty-filled dental tray since oral scanning may not always be the best option for a patient. “Our students will graduate knowing both how to perform digital scanning plus the traditional methods used for impressioning,” she said. “And that will give them an even greater competitive edge.” n 8 Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 Finding New TB Therapies Staying on the cutting edge of medical research has always been an imperative for New Jersey Medical School’s Public Health Research Institute (PHRI), just as it has been for Celgene Global Health, a division of Celgene Corporation. This past year, the global biopharmaceutical company continued to support University programs with a $500,000 grant to establish the PHRI Inspiration Fund. The fund has enabled the Institute, highly regarded for its work in TB and other opportunistic infectious diseases, to hire a new faculty member focused on TB research. Dr.Veronique Dartois “PHRI has a long history of advancing research in TB. We look forward to our gift furthering this activity and solidifying the work that is being done in collaboration with Celgene Global Health,” remarked Dr. Jerome B. Zeldis, CEO of Celgene Global Health and CMO of Celgene Corporation. Researcher Dr. Veronique Dartois arrived at PHRI in April from the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases in Singapore. She is known for her expertise in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of TB, and is using animal models to study both the overt and dormant forms of the illness. She also is helping to analyze therapeutic drug regimens and will assist in developing preclinical and clinical trials. “My primary interest is understanding how well drugs reach TB lesions in the lungs, if they penetrate properly,” said Dr. Dartois. “We’ll be looking at the impact of TB control and may be able to alter doses and combine drugs in a smarter way.” Dr. David Perlin, executive director of PHRI, facilitated the grant. “This gift is clearly very important to us, as we could not have recruited Dr. Dartois without it,” noted Dr. Perlin. “We have a strong link with Celgene, a very innovative immunology-centric company that is changing the course of human health through transformational science. There’s a natural synergy to our partnership, which basically comes down to our science and expertise and what Celgene looks to accomplish to help patients live longer and better lives.” n Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 9 Donor Stories Challenge Grant Helps Central Jersey’s Most Vulnerable A grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to the Foundation of UMDNJ will provide needed funding to support critical healthcare services for Central Jersey’s most vulnerable residents served by the Eric B. Chandler Health Center. The Center, owned and operated by Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in collaboration with the Eric B. Chandler Community Board Inc., provides a full range of healthcare services to those in need, regardless of ability to pay. Dr. Sally Mravcak in Chandler Clinic “The grant will help the Chandler Health Center maintain the fiscal stability necessary to provide vital services for patients who have few other sustainable care options,” explained Dr. Eric Jahn, senior associate dean for community health at the Medical School. “This generous support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation could not come at a more critical time, as we face both economic challenges and an increasing need for these services from the greater New Brunswick community.” The RWJF grant totals $4 million, including $2 million to support operations of the Center and a $2 million challenge grant to establish an endowment that will allow the Center to continue providing services in perpetuity. The Foundation of UMDNJ raised $2 million in matching funds to meet the challenge. In addition, boarddesignated funds from New Jersey Health Foundation provided an additional 20 percent match for the endowment. n 10 8 Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 To Honor A Lifetime of Achievement While many people are honored by friends and family after their deaths, some have the good fortune to be honored during their lifetimes. Dr. Aaron Shatkin, founding director of the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM) who passed away on June 4, 2012, was one of those people. According to Dr. Ann Stock, CABM’s associate director, the entire faculty wanted to pay tribute to Dr. Shatkin, who had been so instrumental in the Center’s success, as it observed its 25-year anniversary. (l-r): Dean Peter S. Amenta; Dr. Aaron Shatkin; Dr. Harold Varmus “Dr. Shatkin created an extremely collaborative culture and a great feeling of community and spirit,” she explained. “Because of him, CABM is a productive, vibrant scientific environment and a great place to do research.” To honor Dr. Shatkin, a lectureship was established in his name and announced as part of the CABM 25th Anniversary Symposium. Thus far, his friends and colleagues have contributed more than $105,600 to the lectureship. The annual Aaron J. Shatkin Lectureship features prestigious international figures in the biosciences, for as Dr. Shatkin himself pointed out, “outstanding speakers have a coalescing effect.” Dr. Harold Varmus, director of the National Cancer Institute and co-recipient of a Nobel Prize, spoke to a standing-room only crowd, as the first speaker at the inaugural lecture held this past spring, which Dr. Shatkin had the opportunity to attend. Dr. Shatkin, formerly with the National Institutes of Health and the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology, was considered a pioneer in bringing molecular biology and biochemistry to the field of animal virology. He had been named as one of the country’s foremost biomedical sciences researchers by the Association of American Medical Colleges and had received numerous prestigious honors, including election to the US National Academy of Sciences. But for Dr. Stock and other colleagues, Dr. Shatkin was more than an accomplished scientist. “CABM is what it is today because of the culture Dr. Shatkin created here,” she said. “He showed us how important good leadership is and created the collaborative culture here that has made us successful. He will be dearly missed but we are gratified that we had the opportunity to honor him during his lifetime.” n Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 11 9 Donor Stories Building A Legacy Based on A Lifetime Dream Creating an endowment is a beautiful way to honor the memory of a loved one …and perhaps to create a legacy envisioned during his or her lifetime. To Dr. Jeanne Steiner and her siblings, helping to establish an endowment at the School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) was a personal mission… one that would have meant a lot to their father, Dr. Charles Steiner, a pioneer in the field of osteopathic medicine and the founding chair of the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) at SOM. Dr. Charles Steiner and Zeke “My siblings and I feel very privileged to have witnessed the delight my father took in the practice of osteopathic medicine. His clinical skills and charisma worked like a charm on so many individuals who were suffering, and his gratification was immense,” she explained. “Although he taught many students and mentored many young practitioners, he worried until the end about his legacy. ” That’s why members of the Steiner family, the Alumni Association of the School of Osteopathic Medicine and leaders in the osteopathic community started a campaign to raise $2 million in Dr. Charles Steiner’s name to support a cause near and dear to his heart—the Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Residency Program at SOM. To date, $785,000 has been raised for the endowment. Gifts to the campaign will establish a residency position for a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine interested in expanding his or her OMM knowledge. The training will allow the physician to treat patients using osteopathic manipulative medicine; to conduct research into the overall effectiveness of OMM and to participate in the education of current students at the School of Osteopathic Medicine. “My father always felt that he hadn’t reached as many learners as he might have, and that he hadn’t convinced osteopathic schools to push for more research. We believe that the plans under development by SOM will not only honor his name and achievements, but they will fulfill his wish to create an ongoing pursuit of excellence in the field,” Dr. Jeanne Steiner said. n 12 Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 Wakefern Food Corp. Establishes $1 Million Endowment To honor its retiring president and COO, Wakefern Food Corp. established The Dean Janeway Endowment to Advance Healthcare Excellence with a $1 million gift to New Jersey Health Foundation and its affiliate, the Foundation of UMDNJ. (l-r): Joseph Colalillo, Wakefern chairman and CEO; Dean Janeway; Joe Sheridan, Wakefern president and COO Mr. Janeway, who was the president and chief operating officer of Wakefern, retired after 45 years with the company, the past 16 as president. Wakefern, the merchandising and distribution arm of ShopRite supermarkets and PriceRite stores, is the largest retailerowned cooperative in the country. Mr. Janeway will designate the annual proceeds of the endowment to support groundbreaking research, scholarships for future healthcare professionals or patient care and community service programs for the underserved, all programs offered through the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. “What makes Dean a natural leader is that he cares about people,” said Joseph S. Colalillo, chairman and CEO of Wakefern. “This endowment is an outstanding way for us to honor not only his legacy at Wakefern but his passion for serving the community as well.” Mr. Janeway, who is chairman of the Boards of the Foundation of UMDNJ and New Jersey Health Foundation, was awarded the New Jersey Food Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. In 2011, the Food Marketing Institute recognized Mr. Janeway with its highest award — The Herbert Hoover Award — for his professional excellence in serving the food retail and wholesale industry. n Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 13 Lifetime Donors The Foundation gratefully acknowledges those who have supported us with gifts of $1 million or more over the years. Foundation of UMDNJ ANNUAL REPORT 2012 19 Financial Highlights 100% of your gift goes to the area you designate When you donate to the Foundation of UMDNJ, you can designate your gift to any area about which you are passionate. Do you want to support a specific researcher studying a specific disease? Would you like to contribute to a center or institute that is making differences in people’s lives every day? Or is your goal to help a medical, dental, nursing or allied health student by contributing to a scholarship to secure the future of health care? No matter where you designate your gift, we assure you that 100 percent of it— every dollar — goes directly to the area that you designate. How is that possible? We are fortunate that through sound financial management and excellent oversight by New Jersey Health Foundation, the parent company of the Foundation of UMDNJ, we are able to use board-restricted funds to: 1. Award grants to faculty and researchers at UMDNJ through the Annual Grant Awards program, which has given $50 million in grants since inception of the Program 2. Provide a 20% match for endowment gifts of $2 million or more coming from a single donor and paid within two years 3. Fund operations at the Foundation of UMDNJ Interested in our audited financial statements?
