REPAIR MANUAL

from original supplied by Windsor Davies.

TO OLYMPUS MICROSCOPE SERVICING PERSONNEL
Model VANOX (AH) is designed as a versatile research microscope equipped with various accessories.
This repair manual describes repairing procedures in principle for its standard configuration as a biological
microscope.
The focusing mechanism of the microscope is largely different from that of BH or BH2 since the former
must assure robbustness, durability and accuracy compatible with heavy accessories to be attached to it.
Therefore, the focusing mechanism can rarely be troubled in practical use. After it has been used for a
long time, however, it will require lubrication and repair to protect it from dust, humidity, etc.
The special tools listed in this manual must be employed for disassembling the instrument; otherwise it
may not be disassembled or parts may be damaged.
The observation tube is equipped with a constant tube length adjustment (to automatically compensate for
variation of interpupillary distance between binocular tubes) and must be adjusted elaborately as described
in this manual after disassembly of the prism. Do not attempt disassembly of the prism when the special
tools for adjustment are not available at the site.
In the diescriptions contained in this manual, "right" and "left" are defined in the direction as seen by the
microscopist sitting in the observing position through the microscope, unless other wise specified.
For cleaning lenses, a liquid mixture of alcohol (3) and ether (7) should be used. For details, reference
should be made to "How to Clean the Microscope" which is available upon separate request.
Requisites for repairs:
1. First of all, ascertain what parts of the microscope the user or owner of which wishes you to repair.
2. Never fail to check the entire function of the microscope before you commence its repair.
a) Find out what parts are defective and how much they are damaged.
b) Prior to repair, think of the best possible order of disassembling the defective parts in a most
efficient way.
3. After completing the repair, check the functions of not only the re-assembled parts but also the entire
microscope to make sure no defect should be left unremedied.
4. Be careful not to deform repair parts during the assembly; make it practice to use tools and jigs
specified for pu rpose.
5. Make repairs promptly and accu rately.

3-2-24 Adjustment of coarse focusing tension
a) Grasp the right and left coarse focusing knobs
in the conditions assembled in 3-2·23. While
fixing the right coarse focusing knob, turn the
left coarse focusing knob clockwise (in the
tightening direction). In this condition, check
the coarse focusing knob for its rotation
tension (manual feeling).
Then, turn the leh coarse focusing knob
counterclockwise (Iooseing direction) and
check the coarse focusing knob for its rota~
tion tension. It should normally be lighter
than felt previously.
NOTE:
For checking the coarse focusing knob for
its rotation tension, fix the focusing body (it
may be grasped by hand) and tu rn the leh
coarse focusing knob.
b)
If the rotation tension cannot be varied by
turning the left coarse focusing knob clockwise, disassemble the left coarse focusing

3-2-25 Adjustment of engagement between rack and
pinion
Aher setting the coarse focusing knob so as to
be rotatable as lightly as possible, make sure
that it is free from play (backlash) or grating
at the upper, intermediate and lower positions
of the coarse focusing range.
If it plays or grates, adjust it as described
below:
a) Remove one of the two Racks AA593000.
Check the other rack.
b) When the coarse focusing knob has play,
insert a piece of tin foil (t =: 0.01 to 0.05 mm)
under the rack.
cl If the coarse focusing knob grates, slightly
file off the bottom surface of the rack.
-31 -

b) Check to see if deviation of the objective
pupil from the visual field center of KNOO29
is within a range of 3: 2.
(See Fig. 4-45)
cl If the deviation of the pupil is not within the
range, adjust it by turning Screw HU2x2SA.
In the case illustrated in Fig. 4-45, pupil of
the objective is located at the position of
10 o'clock and shifted toward the position
of 4 o'clock by tightening Screw HU2x2SA
which is arranged at the position of 4 o'clock
in Fig. 4-46.
(See Fig. 4-46)
NOTE:
For facilitating the pupil adjustment by
tightening Screw HU2x2SA, Screw 3PUK2x

d) After the pupil adjustment of the right and

Screws 3PUK2x4SA or HK2-242SA are
tightened firmly.
e)
By using C-' instead of KN0029, further
check the right and left optical axes. Deviation within 2 divisions on the reticle of
KNOOO5 can be corrected by adjusting
position of the eyepiece sleeve. Large devia·
tion must be corrected by adjusting the
objective pupil in the procedures given in
4·3-4.
NOTE:
This adjustment must be done not by the
procedures given in 4·3·3 but by those given
in 4·34. After deviations of the right and left
optical axes have been adjusted within 2
divisions respectively, the objective pupil
must be checked by using KN0029 instead of
C-,. These adjustments must be performed
repeated Iy.
Model VANOX uses Bi of a new type (equipped with Adjusting Screw HU2x2SA) and an
old type. In case of the old type, a piece of
tin foil should be inserted under the eyepiece
sleeve.
- 49-
NOTE,
When the objective pupil cannot be adjusted
properly by any means, adjust prism setting
once again.

Attach Eyepiece Sleeves AZ016600 and
ZJ803700 to Mounts AA581300 and
AA581400 respectively with six Screws

(Take care not to mistake the right sleeve for
the left one. The helical tube must be arranged on the left side.)
Before tightening the three screws, insert C·,

centered with the cross hairs. Then tighten
the three screws.
