We have been helped greatly by the long term lease granted to the University Art Museum to use the first floor for storage of its archives. This rental covers almost half of our annual fixed operating costs for the House. Our efforts to increase the culture of philanthropy continue to grow. The Senior Class Gift campaign was the largest ever and its success has led us to transfer its operations to the Development office, where a full time staff member is now devoted to student philanthropy. Our Founders Circle group continues to grow and our Board of Directors giving reached an all-time high. We continue to be devoted to the mission of encouraging engagement for the purpose of promoting philanthropy, mobilizing advocates and providing opportunities to serve UC Santa Barbara. We appreciate all of the support we have received from our alumni. It takes great alumni to make a great University and we have a great University. Go Gauchos George Thurlow ‘73 Assistant Vice Chancellor, Alumni Affairs UCSB Alumni Association Board of Directors The leadership of the UCSB Alumni Association is demonstrated by its Board of Directors. Each director is elected based on professional and personal achievements, University and civic leadership and passion to represent our alumni to foster advocacy, philanthropy and service. The Board of Directors is also responsible for the strategic oversight of the Alumni Association, its assets, and investments. Under the leadership of the Board, the Alumni Association has achieved great strides in alumni giving, advocacy, student philanthropy and revenue generation. 4 UCSB Alumni Association Impact Report 2013-14 OFFICERS Jan Campbell ’74—President Justin Morgan ’07—Vice President Travis Wilson ’02—Secretary / Treasurer ELECTED MEMBERS Cuca Acosta ’02 Shanna Bright ’93 Jorge Cabrera ’02 Teresa Carranza ’09 Ron Chiarello ’83 Carl Clapp ’81 Manuel Esteban Ph.D.’76 Mark French ’73 Ralph Garcia ’83 Debi Kinney ’97 Francesco Mancia ’80 Mary Moslander ’88 Kristen Nesbit ’02 Michele Schneider ’91 Niki Sandoval Ph.D. ’07 Rich St. Clair ’66 Wenonah Valentine ’77 Sue Wilcox ‘70, Ph.D.’74 Marie Williams ’89 Marisa Yeager ’95 UCSB ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Year in Review $10.6 Million $1 Million+ 28 Student Scholarships awarded for the 2014-15 Academic Year through the Alumni Scholarship Program 194,000 @UCSB UC Santa Barbara alumni population worldwide 120,000 @UCSB enewsletter subscribers www.ucsbalum.com The Alumni Scholarship Program surpassed the $1M threshold in cumulative gifts and pledges in 2014 with an overall goal of $3M 22,000 Total given to UC Santa Barbara by alumni in FY 2013-14 UCSB alumni and friends have chosen to stay connected and make UCSB stronger by becoming Alumni Association members 6,800 300+ UCSB Alumni and Friends attended the 2014 All Gaucho Reunion Student , Alumni, Department and Community events held at the Mosher Alumni House 5 HONORING GAUCHO GREATNESS The 2014 Awards Luncheon honored Debbie Fleming ’86 (Graver Alumni Service), Joel Michaelsen ’69 (Graver Alumni Service), Ken Preston ’70 (Graver Alumni Service) and Edith Widder ’77, ’82 (Distinguished Alumni) Chancellor Yang celebrates the 2013 Alumni Award Recipients from left to right: Josh Berman ’91 (Distinguished Alumni), Jean K. Lezak, a four-time Olympic Gold Medalist, shared his experiences since UCSB, including his inspiring anchor leg swim for the 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay, perhaps the greatest relay Monie DeWitt leg ever. In recognition of her altruistic advocacy for education — including her widespread support of schools and students of every age and at every level of academics — philanthropist Natalie Orfalea was honored by the Alumni Association with an honorary alumni award in late 2013. Orfalea, whose nonprofit Orfalea Foundation strives to strengthen communities by empowering individuals, was celebrated for her many efforts both on campus and off at a special induction ceremony. “I am so proud to be part of the UCSB family,” Orfalea said of the distinction. “The Orfalea Foundation’s interest in lifelong learning finds many expressions here at UCSB, from the childcare center to the broad range of classroom curricula, to the Arts & Lectures community enrichment programs. Like our foundation, this university strengthens communities by empowering individuals, with opportunities for learning, sharing of ideas and a collaborative environment promoting individual and organizational growth.” A longtime benefactor and, with her foundation, an engaged partner of UCSB, Orfalea’s extensive generosity to the university includes gifts to the Orfalea Family Children’s Center, the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education and UCSB Arts & Lectures. The Alumni Association actively communicated updates with nearly a dozen emails over the course of the weeks following May 23rd. A special landing page was built that provided opportunities for alumni to share messages of support (175 messages were drafted and shared with students during Finals Week in a bound book at the Mosher Alumni House), volunteer options, upcoming memorial events that took place across the country and perhaps most importantly, the most complete record of news stories on the events surrounding May 23rd. For more information on the Isla Vista Tragedy and the university’s response, visit ucsbalum.com/newsevents/ helpgauchostrong. The Isla Vista Memorial Paddle Out attracted nearly 3,000 UCSB students, alumni and friends in a powerful show of solidarity. www.ucsbalum.com 9 PHILANTHROPY IN ACTION Alumni Founders Circle Honoring the University’s Past and Assuring Its Future FOUNDERS CIRCLE U C S A N TA B AR B A R A A L U M NI The Alumni Founders Circle, launched in the Fall of 2011, has a goal of supporting the Association’s three key philanthropic initiatives. After graduation she hopes to continue her studies by enrolling in a graduate school program with a focus in either Environmental or Bio Engineering. Gabrielle is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys activities such as hiking, kayaking, and spending time at the beach when she isn’t studying. Gabrielle tells us that the ASF scholarship she received this year will allow her to take out fewer loans, which will alleviate financial stress during some of her most strenuous semesters as an undergraduate. www.ucsbalum.com 11 Larry DeSpain ’63 and Marie Sue Parsons ’63 with the inaugural Class of 1963 Scholarship recipient, Carys Morgan ‘14 Class of 1963 Scholarship Fund FY 13-14 Donors ($1,000+) Alumni Affairs Support FY 13-14 Donors ($1,000+) Steve ’63 and Diana Campbell ’63 Jim ’63 and Sheila Davidson Larry ’63 and Phyllis DeSpain In Memory of Alan Ellington ’63, Dear friend and brother Sigma Phi Epsilon Tom Harriman ’63 Mr. and Mrs. Steven C.
