one came forward. All this proper paper filing and positioning happened during the
singing of “How Beautiful” which was beautiful. All this action happened after many
people had lined up all the way from the piano to the guitar section of the Fresh Start

On December 1 our new Children’s and Family Minister comes on board to serve the Lord among us. With
some overlapping ministry with our beloved Stacey Ferrer, our new staff person will continue to value the

With Thanksgiving (Nov. 26), Christian New Year (Nov. 29), Christmas (Dec. 25) and Secular New Year (Jan.
1) straight ahead there is still time to commit to our Prayer Covenant. By joining this effort, you will be praying for
one hour each day and underpinning the exciting ministries God is causing through Chester United Methodist.

CUMC is a Prayer Covenant Congregation:
Again this year, Bishop Cho has challenged us and we
will commit to being a Covenant Prayer Church in the VA Conference. This means that 10% of our congregation
needs to make a promise to spend 1 hour each day in prayer and spiritual disciplines, i.e. reading scripture,
meditating, fasting and focusing on the power of God. Many of you are already doing this and we would like your
names. We also need the names of those who are ready to commit to one hour of prayer daily as we begin a NEW
YEAR. Just as God has brought us to where we are through prayer, God will take us where God wants us to go
through prayer.
Operation Christmas Child Update: We delivered 185 shoeboxes and 3 bags of goodies
to the Samaritan’s Purse! Please continue to pray for the children in need around the
world who will receive these gifts. Thanks to all for participating.
Thank You, Church, for generously providing CCHASM Thanksgiving Meal Packages and
donations for grocery gift cards. We collected 60 meals and over $2,300.00!
MUSIC NOTES
The Christmas season is always rich with wonderful music that tells the story of our Savior’s birth. We offer
a number of concert opportunities that may be appealing to folks who otherwise wouldn’t set foot in a
church. Take a moment to pray over the names of some people who are near and dear to you, who perhaps
need to catch a glimpse of the peace that only God can give. Invite them to join you for one or more of
these special invites, and then ask God to touch their hearts in some special way! Postcards are available for our
Christmas musical. Please leverage this ministry tool and invite your friends and neighbors!

The Fresh Start Sunday School Class in Study, Fellowship and Service
Join the Fresh Start Sunday School Class in Study, Fellowship and Service:
 Beginning November 29, the First Sunday of Advent—Sent, from Jorge Acevedo,
Lead Pastor at Grace Church, a multi-site United Methodist congregation in Southwest
Florida. God sent Christ into the world as our Savior. That’s what Christmas is all about.
In turn, Christ sends us into the world. But do we really understand how, where, and
why we are sent? This Advent study challenges us through story, art, and Bible study to
discover what it means to be Christ’s hands, feet, head, and heart.
 Join us as we celebrate the season on Friday, December 4, at 6 PM, for dinner together at
the Petrey’s and to wrap presents for our Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Christmas Mother children.
The Fresh Start Class meets every Sunday morning at 9:45 in room 221. Visitors and new members are always

The United Methodist Women (UMW) is to “be a community of women whose
purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus

 Thursday, December 10, 10 AM —Ada Mae Bookman Fellowship—will meet in Davis Fellowship Hall for a

Christmas Cookie Sale—The UMW will be selling Homemade Christmas Cookies by the Tin in the Fellowship Hall
following 11 o’clock worship on Sunday, December 6. Proceeds will go to support our gifts to local, national, and
international missions, including, but not limited to, our CUMC food pantry, United Methodist Family Services,
Branches, and the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Sign up in the pew register with your name, phone
number, whether you’d like a $5, $10 or $20 tin, and whether you have any food restrictions (gluten, peanuts, etc.).

United Methodist Men
The United Methodist Men will not meet on Wednesday, December 6. After a very busy November
with our monthly meeting, United Methodist Men Sunday, and the Golf and Dinner fellowship at The
Highlands, we have decided to skip our December meeting. We will resume our monthly meetings on
Wednesday, January 6, 2016. Enjoy all the December activities being offered this season as we
celebrate the birth of our Savior!
United Methodist Men Sunday
The United Methodist Men would like to thank everyone for their generous support on United Methodist Men
Sunday. We collected over $900 to support our various ministry projects! We will put these funds to good use as
we move into 2016.
‘Tis the season to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior! High School
Quenchers will be spending the month of December focusing on the
importance of Christ’s birth and having a personal relationship with Christ!
During this month we will decorate our youth cottage and enjoy some good
fellowship. LOOKING FOR CHURCH FAMILY – If you are interested in enjoying
our high school youthies at your house, as we carol and briefly stop by to visit
(possibly offering cookies/goodies), please contact Jenni/Jason Deckert at
hsyouthdirector@chesterumc.org – The date will be Wednesday, December 16.
Mission Project – We will be collecting gently used purses to fill with toiletries to pass out as part of our blessing
bags. The weather is getting cold! Be on the lookout for blessing bags that you can pick up at church to keep in
your car until meeting a person in need! If you have any gently used purses that you are willing to donate, please
place them in the mission closet. We are also in need of socks, gloves, and chapstick.
Random Acts of Christmas Kindness! Make this a family tradition! There will be Kindness Cards that you can
pick up on the Quench bulletin board, outside of the Davis Fellowship Hall. Quenchers will be placing ideas and
acivities on the board to get you started. Your family may choose to participate once per week OR everyday
through the Christmas season!
We are praying that you and your family are able to cherish this season and make beautiful memories! Happy

The Middle Schoolers helped make Thanksgiving special for our community and our CARITAS families in
November. They helped the DASHers sort and organize food for CCHASM meals. The young people did a fabulous
job of guiding and supporting our DASHers. A grateful “Thank You” to our church family for supporting the
children and youth in this outreach. The following Sunday, they made lunches for our CARITAS families. A special
thanks to their parents for providing all the food we needed for making the lunches. Such a simple task, and yet it
brought the youth great pleasure to serve the needs of others.
CUMC Preschool

What a wonderful month to be teaching children. The month of December is such an
exciting time. Our class will be learning the true meaning of Christmas. We will be
busy making wonderful Christmas crafts as we learn letters, numbers, and mostly how to be a good Christian.
Our class comes to school each day in hopes that our classroom pet “Mr. Tickles” has escaped from his crate.
Mr. Tickles is a turtle that is a stuffed animal. The children so enjoy trying to find him each day. We have
“Chapel” each morning and learn lessons from the bible. We have been busy practicing Christmas songs for
our program on December 17. The preschool will end their month with a Festival celebrating the birth of our
Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and a Christmas program for our families. If you are in need of a preschool, feel
free to come by and visit. We would love to be able to teach your child in a loving Christian manner.

The families of Chesterfield Innovative Academy

Choir donated almost 60 books to our library or
money to purchase books along with supplies for
back-to-school.

CUMC receives many requests for assistance (rent, utility bills groceries, gas, etc).
Before we help a
person or family, CCHASM screens every applicant to verify that they are doing the best they can with their
resources and that the need is legitimate. Periodically, people show up at the church on Sunday mornings asking to
speak to the pastor about assistance or approaching people in our congregation or Sunday School classes for
money. We only screen assistance requests during weekly office hours, and we do not give assistance until we do a
thorough background check.
Sharing Tree - 2015
Each ornament on the tree in the Atrium represents an adult with an intellectual
disability who lives in Chesterfield County and does not have family or will not
receive Christmas gifts without your help. Here's how it works:
 Choose an ornament from the tree no later than Tuesday, December 1. There is a second tag
for each individual. Write your name on this tag and place it in the basket for Terry. Terry has a
master wish list with contact information for each Case Manager, should you have any questions
or lose your tag.
 Bring your items back, labeled with the ID# of the ornament you chose, and place under the
tree by Tuesday, December 8 (wrapped or unwrapped: your choice!) Gift ideas are on the
ornament for your convenience.
Even in tough times, there is always enough to share! Thanks so much for all of your support in
the past! Our individuals have been really excited to receive gifts and really appreciate your
kindness!

FURNITURE AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS NEEDED
One of our CARITAS families (a mother and 2 children) have moved into an apartment. They have no
furnishings whatsoever, so we are accepting donations of furniture, beds, linens and household items
until Thursday, December 3. Please bring your items to the church or contact the church office if you
need assistance in transporting items to the church. (Church Office Phone number 748-6006)
