The Sunday readings in Ordinary time tell us of people and lives
that are anything but ordinary as are the people that we celebrate
and remember in the week days: Benedict, who started the first
monasteries, St. Swithun, Elizabeth Ferrard, the first Deaconess in the
Church of England and Mary Sumner founder of the Mother’s Union
among a host of others from the 1st to the 20th century. A cloud of
witnesses to God’s love.
In Ordinary time we read letters from that extraordinary man Paul, as
he writes to the first Christians, helping them to live in faith and trust
in God and his Son Jesus. Not ordinary then and not ordinary now.
In ordinary time as we follow the Gospel readings we learn something
about what being a disciple of Jesus can mean, great joy, but also
hatred and persecution. God loves us; so we are not to be afraid. God
loves us freely, and so we must show and give that love to others, live
our lives trying to listen to God, which can never be ordinary.
Ordinary can seem dull to us, but to many people in the world to live
an ordinary peaceful life is something that they pray for constantly.
Things that most of us take for granted, ordinary, are to the people in
Syria and Iraq and many other places in the world the answer to their
prayers.
As we move through Ordinary time, learning about extraordinary
people, we can think and pray for those whose longing and prayer is
for an ordinary peaceful life.

Church Repairs and Heritage
Project An architect has been
appointed and will assist with
the selection of consultants and
contractors to carry out the necessary
surveys and investigations over the
coming weeks. We need to raise
almost £10,000 in partnership funding
to complete this project and would
be grateful for any support you could
give. Regular progress reports will
be posted on display boards in the
Church and on the website www.

Open Gardens in Goodrich On
Friday 26th August two gardens in
Goodrich are opening
again for the National
Gardens Scheme (NGS).
Mulberry House and
Poole Cottage will be
open 11-5pm. For more
information visit www.
ngs.org.uk. Joint admission is £5
for adults and refreshments will be
available at both gardens along with
plants for sale. Due to limited local
parking, please park in the village and
walk to the gardens (shuttle service
available up to Poole Cottage).
Spring Festival Annual Plant Sale
Thank you to all who supported this
very successful event. £1,600 was
made for Church funds. The weather
was kind to us and everyone seemed
to enjoy themselves, particularly the
gardeners who left laden with new
plants to improve their gardens even
more. We are now looking forward to
our Scarecrow and Harvest Festival in
September.
Just a Reminder! Goodrich Annual
Scarecrow and Harvest Festival
this year will be on Saturday, 17th
September and Sunday, 18th
September with the Harvest Service
on Sunday, 25th September. A
chance for all the community to get
together! There will be a scarecrow
trail, lunch and tea if you want it,
produce and cakes for sale and
much, much more. The theme for
this year is – Ancient and ModernProminent Figures in British
History – pre 1900 and post
1900. We are planning an informal
workshop beforehand to make our
scarecrows. If you would like to be
a part of this, please ring Chris on

Afternoon Club Our meeting on
Tuesday 19 July will be a talk on
dog breeding by Jonquil Dodd, who
will be accompanied by her dog
Misty. The meeting will be in the hall,
starting at 2.00pm.

On Tuesday 16 August we shall meet
at Sheila and Terry Snow’s house (in
the garden weather permitting) for an
informal get-together and an al-fresco
lunch, from 12.00pm onwards.
Ladies’ Guild On Monday July 18
the Ladies Guild will have a good
chance to catch up with each other
once again for a sociable Beetle
Drive, organised by Chris Crane,
Barbara Evans and Wendy Verity in
the Village Hall at 7:30pm
The August event will now be a
lunchtime Summer Barbecue at Chris
& Hedley Hulbert’s home on Monday
15 from 12:30pm. Prior booking will
be needed either at the July meeting
or by email, as numbers will be
limited.
Coppett Hill Common Trust
Celebration Event 10th September
2016. We will be celebrating the
30th anniversary of the formation
of the Coppett Hill Common Trust
on Saturday 10th September in the
village hall and on the hill - look out
for posters round the village.
Come and see what’s going on at
the Coppett Hill Common Trust with
an exhibition in the Goodrich Village
Hall. Children’s art exhibition, optional
walk up the hill - and bring a picnic
to have on the Hill itself - weather
permitting! Light refreshments - pizzas, teas and cake. All Welcome

Mornings in the
Garron Centre
Coffee Mornings
are held by the
PCC on every
second Saturday in the month; the
PCC organises these sociable gettogethers in the village and then
uses the proceeds to maintain the
churchyard - so the whole community
benefits. Our Coffee Mornings are
held in the lovely warm & comfortable
Garron Centre, unless otherwise
advertised.
For the July gathering, there will be
plenty of plants for sale - some still
potted from the Langstone Court
Open Day - and always homemade
cakes and fresh coffee; also freerange eggs & cakes to buy. And
visitors can be assured of a warm
welcome at any time of year!
The July Coffee Morning will be on
Saturday 9th at 10.30 am; the August

Langstone Court - Open House &
Plant Sale, Spring Bank Holiday
Thanks to everyone who came
along on a beautiful afternoon to
look around the historic Langstone
House & sit to enjoy afternoon tea
in a gloriously sunny garden. The
PCC & volunteers very generously
donated a huge number of plants for
sale & some wonderful cakes; the
whole event was so successful it is
hoped it can be repeated at the same

Evensong in July and August will be

Hymns and Pimms It’s that time
of year, when we pray for a lovely
summer’s evening to sing a selection
of well known and loved hymns,
followed by a chance to catch up
with friends whilst enjoying a glass
of Pimms and nibbles. We’d love

4.30pm.
Church Holiday Club We are going
to run this in the summer in Llangrove
Village Hall on the theme of ‘Go for
Gold’. There will be lots of activities,
creating, cooking along with stories,
songs and lots of fun as we learn
more about the Christian faith. Forms

Queen’s Birthday
Celebration Thank
you to everyone who
joined us for tea and
cake, and what a
spread! The hall was
suitably decorated,
with quizzes on hand
to test everyone’s
knowledge and a
fantastic display by the
Rainbows and Brownies taking many
of the ladies on a trip down memory
lane. An enjoyable, and very social,
afternoon was enjoyed by all and
thanks to everyone’s generosity we
raised £275 for St Michael’s Hospice.
So a huge thank you to our bakers,
all who helped get the hall ready and
manned the teapots, cleared away
and for the generosity shown.
At their W.I meeting on 19th May,
members considered Resolutions to
be put forward at the National AGM
and then rounded off the evening with
unusual delicious cheeses presented
by Ruth Walker and scrumptious
puddings made by Elaine Joseph and
Alison Grogan. Members begged to
have these again at another meeting.
In June, talented and trained flower
arranging members Heather, Margaret
and Emma demonstrated secrets of
making spectacular arrangements
and helped members to create
their own to take home. Visitors are
welcome to meetings held at 7.30
pm on the 3rd Thursday each month
so why not come along on 21st July
to see Irene Huddlestone showing
how to make ‘Decorative Eggs’. For

Church News I would like to
welcome Caroline Pearce as our new
correspondent. Caroline is taking
over the role as I will be replacing
Viv Warrington as Southern Benefice
Treasurer in the very near future.

At the time of writing, I am preparing
to row down the Thames from
Lechlade to Runnymede with five
other pensioners from Monmouth
Rowing Club. This is partly for the
challenge but also to help raise
money for Velindre Hospital.

Songs of Praise with a Royal Theme.
Revd Penny Powdrill gave us a well
prepared and light hearted insight
into the years of the Queen’s life from
her birth to her 90th birthday. Brief
details of each decade were shown
on screen, together with photographs
of the era. Val Thomas played
appropriate songs, and the narrative
was interspersed with Bible readings
and well-known hymns. Perhaps one
of the most interesting contrasts was
between the 1940s, when everyone
gathered around the wireless to hear
the news, and today’s universal use
of computers, tablets and iPhones.
Ending with refreshments, the
afternoon had proved fascinating,
full of memories for the oldest
members of the congregation, and
an interesting history lesson for the
youngest. June Osman.

Wyesham Community enjoyed
a super party at Tudor Park on the
Queen’s Official Birthday. Arranged
by John Morgan and Joanne
Stephens, there was a great variety
of fun things to do, from 2 Bouncy
Castles for the children plus Hare
and Tortoise and Tots Farm area for
the little ones, Jungle Run for all, Fun
Slide and Sack Races, Face Painting,
Lucky Dip, Crown making craft led
by Janice Roberts, photos, tombola,
raffle and more. Besides bringing
picnics, visitors were offered Burgers
and Hot Dogs cooked by John
Morgan, and we thank Renee Patek
and Margaret Morris for representing
St James Church by supplying and
serving hot and cold drinks and
cakes. The Happy and fun Party was
enjoyed by everyone.
Wyesham Women’s Guild A
small group of members went to
‘Bridges’ at the invitation of the
Rotary Club. We had a lovely meal of
Lasagne, strawberries and a glass of
wine. After we had eaten, we were
entertained by The Monmouth Ladies
Choir who gave a lovely concert.
A vote of thanks was given to the
Rotary Club.
On 1st June a larger group went to
the ‘Red Door’ at Mitchel Troy for an
afternoon tea. There were beautiful
sandwiches, never ending cakes and
fresh-made scones filled with jam and
cream. I think we all ate too much but
we had a lovely afternoon and did not
require much food for the rest of the
day.
In May the numbers for 50/50 draw
were:- 1st Prize 23, 2nd 49, 3rd 38,

Music in Quiet Places
Saturday 2nd July at 7pm
at St Catherine’s Church, Hoarwithy.
Music in Quiet Places will conclude
its first series with a concert in
the beautiful Grade One listed St
Catherine’s Church, Hoarwithy on
Saturday 2nd July, at 7pm. The
programme of light chamber music
will be performed by some of the
county’s finest young musicians.
The Herefordian Piano Trio (Livi van
Wormelo – Violin, Rachael Kennedy
– Cello and Johannes Moore – piano)
will play a prominent role in the
programme performing sections of
Piano Trios by Haydn, Max Bruch,
Debussy and Frank Bridge. This
will be interspersed by a selection
of solo works including the ‘Suite
Populaire Espagnole’ by Manuel de
Falla for cello and piano, a selection
of classic songs, and an organ solo
by next year’s Hereford Cathedral
Organ Scholar, Laurence John. To
add further colour and diversity to
the programme there will be a guest
performance by members of the
Gilbert Consort of 16th Century music
on period instruments including a
virginal, recorder and crumhorns!
Admission to each ‘Music in Quiet
Places’ concert is free but there will
be a retiring collection which will go
towards St Catherine’s Church and
Herefordshire Historic Churches
Trust. Refreshments will be available
and donations for these would be
appreciated.
St Catherine’s, Hoarwithy is an
extraordinary Italianate church
overlooking the river Wye deep in the
Herefordshire countryside. Please
be advised that car parking is on the
road and access is by a steep path
with steps but help will be provided
for those with wheelchairs if notice is
given by emailing peter@pember.plus.
com.
Music in Quiet Places has been
running since October 2015 and has
proved a most successful first series
of six concerts, visiting some lovely
churches in the County such as Much
Marcle and Weobley.
Plans are now afoot for the second
series, details of which will be
available in due course on the
HHCT and HCS Facebook pages
and website. If you would like any

New vicar for the Borders benefice
The Revd Ben Bentham will be licensed as Vicar of Goodrich with
Welsh Bicknor, Llangarron, Llangrove, Marstow and Welsh Newton
with Llanrothal on Monday 19 September at St Giles, Goodrich,
at 7.30pm. We extend a warm welcome to Ben and Lisa and look
forward to his ministry among us. They hope to move into the
Vicarage in Llangrove on about 15-16 August, but that depends
on several things which are still being sorted out.

CHURCH SERVICES - JULY
Diocese of Hereford
I’m struck by how often things are
said in churches which have some
truth in them, but can be negatively
misleading if taken as the whole truth.
•So, “It’s not all about bums on
seats.” Of course it’s not: there is
a lot more that makes a healthy
church than the numbers of people
attending. But that doesn’t give
us an excuse not to be concerned
about numbers at all.
•“There’s more to mission than
evangelism.” Yes, there is: mission
is the whole of what God sends
his church out to do; evangelism
is proclaiming the good news of
Jesus Christ, with the intention
of obtaining a response. Without
evangelism, there wouldn’t be any
Christians to engage in mission.
So, yes, there’s more to mission than
evangelism - but there’s not less
than evangelism!
•“Without love we are nothing. “
Yes, that’s true too, but it’s not the
same as “All you need is love”, as the
Beatles sang. Yes, St Paul wrote that
without love we are nothing. He also
said that of faith, hope and love, the
greatest is love.
Love is at the heart of everything
the Christian stands for, but that’s
not the same as saying it’s all we
need.

•“There’s no quick fix.” There is a lot
of truth in that.” Similarly, “ To every
difficult problem, there’s an easy
solution – the wrong one.” But to
say that there’s no quick fix is not
to say that there is no fix at all, that
there’s nothing that can be done
when we are faced with seemingly
impossible challenges.
•“Preach the gospel at all times; use
words if necessary.” This is one of
the most mis-quoted and mis-used
sayings of all time. Often attributed
to St Francis, there is no evidence
that he actually said it. He did say,
“All should preach by their deeds,”
meaning that preachers’ deeds
should match their words. But it
is absurd to infer from that that
St Francis thought that telling the
gospel in words did not matter.
One of St Francis’ biographers
wrote that “he preached to any that
gathered to hear the strange but fiery
little preacher form Assisi. His words
were neither hollow nor ridiculous,
but filled with the power of the Holy
Spirit, penetrating the marrow of the
heart, so that listeners were turned to
great amazement.”
All those sayings have some truth in
them: none of them gives an excuse to
avoid taking seriously God’s call to us.
