ENERGY COSTS ON THE RISE
Take measures now to insulate your business
from rises in energy costs
As a small business owner, you meticulously budget for overhead expenses each year, including utility expenses. It can be difficult to
budget and anticipate these costs with the fluctuations and increases in gas and electric rates.
As days have become shorter and your morning commutes colder, you may have noticed your natural gas costs rise. That is because during
the cold season, natural gas prices rise to their highest point for the year.
You may find your natural gas bills are costly now, but prices are slated to increase at over 12% this winter. So what does that mean for
you? Increasing rates will impact your bottom line, but there are several measures you can take to insulate against rising utility costs.
• Lock-in a low natural gas rate. In Ohio, you have the right to shop for the best market rate. If you have never done this, you are
likely paying a higher rate than you need to, and could be saving as much as 15% on your monthly bills.
• Get an energy assessment of your facility. There are countless areas of your building - from lighting, to computers, to your thermostat -where minor and cost effective adjustments will save you hundreds of dollars each year.
• Change your energy consumption habits. This can be as simple as turning off appropriately setting your heating and cooling set
points on your thermostat.
Taking measures to reduce energy consumption and lock-in low rates does not need to be a time-suck. COSE is staffed to
hold your hand through the process and take the burden off your over-booked schedule. Contact us to start saving money today.

A Message from
Painesville Area Chamber of Commerce
Board President,
Jeffrey Sivyer
“Throughout the years I have
heard many references to Solomon being the wisest man that
ever lived. You might hear phrases like, “He has the wisdom of
Solomon”, or, “ someone might
quote a passage from a book
in the Bible, such as Proverbs
27:17 “As Iron Sharpens Iron, so
one man Sharpens another.”
The principle behind this wise
saying is this. There is mutual
benefit in the rubbing of two
iron blades together; the edges
become sharper, making the
knives more efficient in their
task to cut and slice. Left on
their own, over time, they get
dull and less efficient.
Likewise, there is mutual benefit in two lives, organizations,
companies, coming together to
share knowledge, expertise, and
energy in order to become more
efficient. Why else would we
hire mentors and coaches in our
businesses if we already had all
the knowledge needed?
The Painesville Area Chamber

requirements.
Beginning January 1, 2014, the Ohio minimum wage will increase by 10 cents from $7.85/hour to $7.95/hour. For tipped
employees, Ohio minimum wage increases from $3.93/hour
to $3.98/hour, plus tips.
What does this mean for you?
If your annual gross receipts exceed $292,000 (previously
$288,000), you will be required to pay the Ohio minimum
wage. If your annual gross receipts are $292,000 or less,
then you will be required to pay the federal minimum wage
which is currently $7.25/hour.
Prepare for the New minimum wage.
If you employ one or more people, the law requires that
you post federal, state and OSHA mandatory posters in the
workplace. With the changes to minimum wage, it’s important to update your posters in order to avoid receiving a
violation or fine.

Walking into
Lantern of Madison’s
newest unit is like
taking a step back
into time, an old
neighborhood that is
warm and welcoming.
Much different than most assisted living and memory care units, Svayus is a 38,700-square-foot Alzheimer’s and dementia care
unit that is more than just a program — it is a lifestyle.
Along with a regular routine, proper nutrition, and an environment that stimulates all five senses, the Svayus unit takes clients to
an era that is familiar and comfortable, therefore reducing conflicts and negative emotions as a result of memory loss.
Entering the unit is like entering a quaint town square. Real waterfalls and piped-in sounds of nature simulate the outdoors.
Along the perimeters are turf grass walkways and sidewalks that ramble to 22 residential rooms, many with front porches, a
rocking chair and front window. There’s a bistro and cafe tables for open dining and socializing, and a number of amenities that
give clients freedom to roam, relax and enjoy.
Often lacking routine when confined indoors, the unit also features lighting that looks like a perfect blue sky accented with
cumulus clouds. The lighting brightens and dims according to the hours of the day. The virtual skyscape lowers blood pressure,
improves sleep and provides other medical benefits.
Svayus offers a collective and holistic approach, using elements of nature to stimulate the brain. Real waterfalls release not only
soothing sound but also release negative ions that consequently increase serotonin to lessen depression and anxiety.
The Svayus activity program is based on seven building blocks that are the basis and foundation for all type of learning. This
program is offered for the first time in the country and for the first time in the world.
Some of the feedback and responses from our families are- “My mother is able to have a conversation, her memory and
attention is better, she is off many PRN medications”, “ My mother is out of her room more and socializing more”
5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease and every 70 seconds someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is the fifth leading killer. Presently, there is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. “The Svayus program is
committed to continue to research and find ways to enhance the quality and dignity of our clients.
“My mother is unable to have a conversation”, “My dad doesn’t recognize me”, “My dad wanders away from home”, “I don’t
have quality time with my mom” If you experience one of these or any other memory related challenges , the Svayus program
can help.

Alternative Rating Program Enrollment Underway for
2014 Policy Year
Has your organization reviewed your savings yet?
If your organization completed
a Temporary Authorization to
Review Information (AC-3) form
this summer and/or is eligible
to participate in a Group Rating program, you should be in
receipt of your savings analysis
from our program administrator,
CompManagement, Inc.
CompManagement continues
to be one of the largest administrators of group programs in
Ohio and is able to offer a multitiered savings system, which
allows their experienced colleagues to pinpoint the greatest
savings discount for which your
organization is eligible.
Please make sure to return
your enrollment documents
timely to ensure your participation. Don’t miss this opportunity to receive an upfront
discount typically ranging from
15 percent to the maximum
discount available from the
Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation which for policy year
2014 is fifty-three (53) percent
for Group Rating.
If you are reviewing savings
quotes from other group administrators, please make sure that
you are examining them thoroughly to ensure that you are
comparing similar discounts and

service offerings. This important
decision affects how much you
pay in workers’ compensation
premiums, as well as who will
be handling any claims incurred
by your injured employees.
If your organization is not eligible for Group Rating for the
2014 policy year, there are other
options and discounts available
(Group Retrospective Rating,
Individual Retrospective Rating, EM Cap, One Claim, Destination Excellence, etc.) that
offer a variety of discounts and
may be compatible with other
programs for potentially larger
savings. Check your mailbox for
these analyses from CompManagement, Inc. as well.
We encourage you to explore
your best option with a CompManagement representative to
see how your organization can
realize your maximum savings
for 2014. Please contact CompManagement at (800) 8256755, select option 3 and speak
to a customer support representative as soon as possible.

THE Y IS FOR…
When most of us think of the
Y, we think of things like swimming, fitness, and child care,
but the Y is so much more. Did
you know that the first-ever
English as a Second Language
class was held at a YMCA in
Cincinnati to help integrate
the thousands of German immigrants? Have you ever heard
about the YMCA in Belfast that
served as a safe-haven for children of both IRA and protestant
families? For 148 years the Lake
County YMCA has strengthened
the foundation of our community with programs that meet
our community’s ever-changing
needs. Those needs led to the
development of such programs
as child care, exercise classes,
swimming classes, and many
of the programs that we are familiar with. As changing demographics, the diabetes epidemic,
and a widening gap between
middle and lower class students
have changed our community,
the Y has changed to meet our
needs. The future of the YMCA
movement has caused the Y to
shift its focus to Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social
Responsibility.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
The issue: The achievement gap
between privileged students and
students from low-income families is constantly discussed, studied, and analyzed by educators all
over the country. The consensus
is that students from low-income
families learn at the same rate as
privileged students in the classroom, but fall behind during the
summer and after-school hours.
The Y’s Response: The Summer Learning Loss Prevention
Program piloted in the summer
of 2013 at Chestnut Elementary.
The program provided literacy
education and enrichment opportunities to students who
were identified as being at-risk
of falling behind. Instead of falling behind their peers, students
in the program ended the summer with test scores indicating a
slight advantage.
HEALTHY LIVING
The issue: Type 2 Diabetes is an
epidemic affecting ten percent
of everyone in both Lake County
and the rest of the United States.
The Y’s Response: The Y’s
Diabetes Prevention Program is
an innovative, collaborative approach to engage with pre-diabetics to make lifestyle changes
impacting diet and exercise. The
program is being piloted all over
the country including Cleveland,
Toledo, Columbus, and Cincinnati,
and has yielded amazing results.
The Lake County Y is scheduled to
kick off the program by 2015.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Issue: People are disconnected from their community
because of societal changes including generational differences,

$100K Grant from the Cleveland
Foundation’s Lake-Geauga Fund
Elevates Plan for Lake Metroparks Observation Tower
Lake Metroparks has been
awarded a $100,000 grant from
the Cleveland Foundation for
the construction of an impressive observation tower at the
agency’s newest park – Lake
Erie Bluffs in Perry Township.
The new park provides visitors with access to almost two
miles of undeveloped Lake Erie
through two access points off of
Lane Road and Clark Road.
“Thanks to the generosity of
the Cleveland Foundation, the
addition of this 50-foot coastal
observation tower will serve
as a cornerstone of this amaz-
ing 600-acre Lake Erie Bluffs
Park,” said Paul Palagyi, executive director of Lake Metroparks.
“This tower will give visitors
an impressive panoramic view
of Lake Erie, the shoreline and
the landscape of central Lake
County.”
The 50-foot observation tower
will be situated overlooking the
lakeshore with multiple viewing platforms along a staircase
that will culminate in a deck
featuring 360-degree views.
The height and location of the
tower will provide visitors with
a unique view of the lake and
the surrounding woods, fields
and wetlands along with the associated wide-range of wildlife
– particularly the large number
of bald eagles that are regularly
safety concerns, and lack of opportunities.
The Y’s Response: The Y’s
Member-Led Community Service
Program is an exciting way to
create volunteer opportunities
in the community for those who
want to give back. Volunteers
receive the mental, physical, and
spiritual benefits of volunteerism,
and the community is strengthened through their service. The
Lake County Y is currently searching for churches, schools, municipalities, and organizations to
partner with who are in need of
volunteers.
As we face the many challenges
that face our community, we
know the Y is a powerful resource
that can be counted on to meet
our needs. Whether our needs
are physical, emotional, or spiritual we can rest assured that the
Y will be there to strengthen the
foundation of our community.
Have You Heard?
seen at the park. The south shore
of Lake Erie is known worldwide
as an important corridor for bird
migration. As songbirds migrate north in spring and south
in fall, large concentrations of
birds can be witnessed migrating around the smallest of the
Great Lakes, sticking close to
the shoreline.
“The view of the lake and this
amazing park is about to be
raised to new heights,” said
Frank Polivka, president of the
Lake Metroparks’ Board of Park
Commissioners. “Thanks in
large part to the grant from the
Cleveland Foundation, visitors
to the park will have an amazing view our greatest natural
resource – Lake Erie.”
“The Lake-Geauga Fund of the
Cleveland Foundation values
its long-standing partnership
with Lake Metroparks,” said
Robert E. Eckardt, executive
vice president of the Cleveland
Foundation. “This is the second centennial grant made by
the Lake-Geauga Fund in recognition of our upcoming 100year milestone in 2014. We are
pleased to support all efforts
that celebrate and preserve the
unmatched natural resources
and beauty of this region for future generations.”
Construction of the observation
tower is scheduled to begin next
spring. Total cost of the project
is estimated to be approximately $200,000 to $250,000.
