When the Osprey arrive, so do the first Purple Martin scouts. The scouts job is to find shelter for their friends and family. Once shelter is found, they return a week or two later and set up camp. The gourd houses for the Purple Martins, at Herrington North, were grown in Southern Maryland and have been hand painted white to keep the nestlings cool. They are suspended on a twenty-foot tall pole and will house 32 pairs, two in each gourd for a total of 64 residents. Purple Martins like to live near their favorite food, the mosquito, but not too close to trees where their biggest threat can hide, hawks. So we selected the perfect location, in the center of our wetland restoration area. As natures best mosquito zappers, Purple Martins can eat up to 2,000 mosquitoes daily. Our colony could eat close to 120,000 mosquitoes every day and keep all of Tracey’s Landing and Deale mosquito free! another exciting summer at Herrington South. We want your dining experience to be great so we’ve recruited an experienced staff that is looking forward to serving you at the Lounge and Cabana Bar, casual Dining Room, Poolside and outside on the Dining Deck. It is our pleasure to guarantee that your experience at Mango’s will be better than ever this summer. We will host live music performances every weekend including acoustic groups, steel drum bands and theme nights. For those of you who arrive on Thursday evenings, we will provide late night happy hour specials to kick off a long fun filled weekend. We will also have exclusive slipholder specials on Sunday nights so the excitement never ends! In addition to providing stellar entertainment, Mango’s is proud to offer an exciting new menu courtesy of Chef Mark Anthony Brewer. To complement your delicious meals, we will be offering an exotic tropical drink menu, daily happy hour specials and brunch on the weekends with our famous build-your-own Bloody Mary Bar. We look forward to a great summer with everyone and as always, we truly appreciate your patronage. Extensive Wetland Restoration Underway There is a large wetland restoration project underway in the center of Herrington North. The two-acre area was completely inundated with an invasive species called phragmite. Phragmite, aka “phrag”, has a very low habitat value and is considered an undesirable plant by the State of Maryland. As long as a seed source remains for the phragmites, native plant species’ aren’t able to establish and maintain control of the area. The first step in restoring the area includes eradicating the phragmites from the wetland area. Once the phrag is eradicated, many native species of high habitat value will be planted and naturally reestablish the area. When completed, the wetland restoration area will be a central part of the ecosystem at Herrington North. The new wetland will have a diverse selection of plants and wildlife for all of us to appreciate and enjoy! Wetland restoration area at Herrington North. 4 H2O Fitness Is Back! Optimize Your Wireless Signal Annapolis Wireless has upgraded all components of the WiFi systems, at Herrington North and South, which has widened coverage and increased the Internet speed. The service will remain complimentary for slipholders and guests. Marinas present a challenging environment for WiFi networks due to a number of variables; in particular, obstacles which interfere with signals such as boat hulls, engine rooms and other boat hardware. By nature, boats are always moving and even the slightest rocking can present variables that did not exist a moment before. A reliable signal will always be available topside of your boat and common areas throughout the marina. Down below in your boat may be less reliable due to obstacles between yourself and the Access Point. To overcome this, preconfigured range extenders are available at each Marina at our cost of $50. Annapolis Wireless is available to assist you with any questions or concerns by reaching them at 443-321-3743 opt. 3. 5 Some insider knowledge..... Holland Point Lots For Sale Here is a closely held secret to cut your time to the deeper It has come to our attention that slipholders often explore the local area in search of homes or building lots. We have received approval for a limited number of select lots in Holland Point. These lots are close to the marina and are offered at record low prices. Slipholders will receive an additional discount. Owner financing is available. Call Melissa at 410.741.5100 ext. 103 to arrange a meeting with us. A Short Cut Across Long Bar water in half! Captain John Whitman, with the fishing boat “Patent Pending”, leaves from C-Dock at Herrington North early in the morning and saves time. He knows time is money and when the fish are biting he needs to be there. When he hits Rockhold Creek # 1, he lines up on Herring Bay #1 and cuts across long bar in 6 feet plus of water at low tide! The heading going out from Rockhold Creek #1 to Herring Bay # 1 is 140o. He estimates that there is six feet on a low tide allowing for vessels with a 4’ draft on a low tide and 5’ vessels on a normal tide. So, if you like to save time getting to your favorite Bay destination, use some insider knowledge and cut across long bar. – Steuart and Hamilton Chaney Captain John Whitman An Osprey Nest Under Construction Herrington Harbour Marker #1 has a new second story high rise. If Opsrey’s could talk, then you would guess that the one pictured to the right called in for a special request. She stood perched and patiently waiting on Marker #3 for her opportunity to move in while Matt, Megan and Emmet installed the raised platform one spring afternoon. The Osprey flew over just after they finished and she has since been happily building and sitting atop her new home. BEFORE AFTER 6 Holland Point lots in relation to Herrington Harbour South.
