Your Florida experience, perfected by the FDCC, begins in the Winter of 2014 as we return to
the enchanting and blissful Marco Island. Whether you are thrill-seeking or searching for fellowship,
swimming, sunbathing, hearty laughter, or something to keep you and the kids entertained, you’ll
find it with our “Ticket to Paradise.”
Our spectacular accommodations at the luxurious Marco Island Marriot Beach Resort give
a new meaning to the phrase “a room with a view.” Coined as a “personal island within an island
paradise,” it is a world-class resort located on three miles of pristine, sandy white beach with
the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico just steps away. On the largest of the 10,000 Islands, it
made Conde’ Nast Traveler’s Gold List for 2013 as one of the World’s Best Places to Stay. This resort
not only exemplifies paradise, but refines and redefines it.
We understand that the definition of relaxation can be as diverse as our members. From soulsoothing to heart-pounding, you’ll find it all right here (and you may decide never to leave the resort during your week’s stay). The hotel also has first class shops right on its premises, and nearby
Naples offers high-end boutiques and stores. Marriott pools offer everything a tropical oasis should
be. In March, average temperatures are in the 80’s during the day and low 60’s at night. Activities
during the week include a guided Waverunner excursion to the Mangrove Estuary, an airboat tour
through the Everglades, a fishing trip, and cruising along the coastal waters via catamaran or by
kayak. If you’re looking for added fun for the kids, take your little ones to Tiki Tribe Discovery Day
Camp. Then, for a touch of luxury and privacy, and your own well-being, you owe it to yourself to
experience the award-winning health spa and terrace, with quiet private pool, surrounded by the
gentle beaches and peaceful waters of the Gulf. We feel there is no better way to dine in Florida than by sea and the Marriot offers the only
beachfront restaurants on all of Marco Island. These include the legendary Quinn’s on the Beach
for the authentic taste of a beachside bistro, and Tropiks, your destination for beach-casual, familyfriendly dining, serving up a healthy and hearty breakfast buffet everyday. And, even in the middle
of the tropics, you sometimes just need a great pizza and 400 Pazzis is the place. Drop into Kurrents,
a local favorite for exquisite seafood, steak, Pan-Asian specialties, and creative Florida cuisine. Craving sushi? Then experience floor-to-ceiling views of the Gulf and prepare to wet your appetite at Korals Sushi and Cocktail Bar which features a custom-designed, 11-foot tall, 3-foot-wide, 3,600 pound
aquarium column. Should you wish to venture away from the resort for dining, there are unique,
delicious and extraordinary restaurants in and near Marco Island for your eating pleasure.
For the golfers, the Marriott has two golf courses that are sure to make you smile. The Rookery
blends a resort private course with the native surroundings and is certified with Audubon International as a Cooperative Sanctuary. At more than 7,100 yards in length, the playing experience
includes five teeing locations, immaculate turf condition, and spectacular greens. The course at
Hammock Bay is a par 72 championship course with 18 distinctive holes. At 7,080 yards, - it’s the
perfect tract for casual golfers.
Back by popular demand, the Federation’s Foundation will hold its’ Silent Auction (so think
of items you can donate to a great cause)! Our book club will feature Henriette Lazarides Power,
whose debut novel, “The Clover House,” was published by Ballentine Books in April of 2013 and
was a Boston Globe best-seller. Ms. Power will entertain our group with lessons learned from an
author’s life and regale us with a talk on a story that USA Today called “[a] stunning debut novel.”
Social events are scheduled at the resort. Our cocktail parties, in different and breathtaking
venues, will allow you to experience magnificent sunsets over the Gulf and breathe fresh salt air. For
the Monday night dine-around and Wednesday night fellowship dinners, explore some of the finest
restaurants in and around Marco Island (including Naples) and enjoy delicious cuisine. Join Tim and
Christie Pratt, on Tuesday night, for the President’s Welcoming Reception in a beautiful courtyard
and garden by the sea. On Wednesday night after dinner, we will gather back at the Marriott for our
“Fire & Ice Nightcap Party” for libations and delectable desserts.
On Thursday night, “The Paradise Party” will give us another chance to gather with friends
and enjoy one heck of party with Sol Fusion, a great dance band! In step with our venue and warm
summer breezes, our ladies should dress in colorful evening cocktail attire but for the men, no black
tie is required. Whether you come solo, or with your spouse/significant other, this party is being
geared so that we can ALL dine and dance into the night, enjoy our friends (both new and old), and
bask in the warmth of fine fellowship.
On Friday night, our final rendezvous will be the theme party, “Miami Vice on Marco.” Get
ready for a one-of-a-kind party with a cool, inviting club-like atmosphere. Experience “Miami Vice,”
which will be cutting edge, dynamic, and fun! Men should wear a favorite sport jacket with t-shirt
(colored preferred, just like Don Johnson), and women, the sky is the limit with vibrant colors and
sun dresses. We will dine on South Florida cuisine, see favorite snippets of Miami Vice, and reminisce as we listen to memorable Miami Vice music. Later on, a DJ will entertain all of us as we dance
to the great songs of the 1980’s. This theme party will be great fun, one for the record books, and
truly a night to remember!
Our Program Chair, Howard Merten, is putting together a fantastic CLE program – Objects
on the Horizon are Closer than they Appear – are you Ready? The expansive and diverse speakers include our own talented FDCC lawyers, corporate/industry members, and guests from Chrysler, Office Depot, IFG Companies, Sciton Inc., State Farm, American Fidelity, Quality Carriers, Eli
Lilly, Century Surety, American Fidelity, CR Bard, Toyota, and Macy’s. Others joining us will be Mark
O’Mara (who defended George Zimmerman) and Billy Murphy (the attorney for Michael Vick and
Don King). The Trial Masters’ Program will focus on the special challenges of representing unpopular and notorious defendants in a 24/7 media age. Plenary Programs include serious and frank
discussions about the future of the legal profession – the pressures of a challenging and changing
economy and the seismic changes taking place in all aspects of the legal profession. Another highlight is Judge Sanford Brooks, who is returning with a very unique and entertaining ethics presentation featuring scenes from a one-man production about Clarence Darrow (this is a program not to
be missed and one for the entire family)!
Our keynote speaker is the provocative, entertaining, and compelling Judge Andrew Napolitano. A Fox News’ Senior Judicial Analyst since 1998, Judge Napolitano broadcasts nationwide on
the Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network throughout the day, Monday through Friday. Famous for his candid remarks, signature wit, and personal anecdotes, Judge Napolitano is one of the
media’s most outspoken analyst of the legal system, most fervent critic of government intervention
into personal lives and commercial transactions, and a passionate defender of the Constitution.
An enchanting destination with unique activities, delicious cuisine, first rate service, breathtaking views, and footprints in the sand will leave you wondering why on earth you didn’t come to
Florida sooner. At Marco Island, the skies are bluer, the sun is warmer, and friendships grow richer.
So book your “Ticket to Paradise” and we will see you in March of 2014 in Marco Island!

Marco Island
A sun-drenched oasis on the edge of the Gulf of Mexico, Marco Island features six miles
of beach and over 100 miles of waterways within its 24 square miles. Marco Island is the largest
barrier island within Southwest Florida’s 10,000 Islands area, extending from Marco Island to Cape
Sable. With a permanent population of 15,000, and a peak winter season population of 35,000,
Marco Island’s residents and visitors alike call this special Island ... Paradise. It is well known for its
high quality of life, natural resources, casual atmosphere, and friendly people.
Indeed, Marco Island has become a hot spot in which to live and vacation when it comes to water
activities and sports, Marco Island has it all – fishing, windsurfing, boating, kayaking, and snorkeling
– plus challenging golf courses. Much of the fun takes place amid a natural backdrop of sawgrass
and mangrove swamps, the latter creating a maze of inland waterways, ideal for observing wildlife
and nature photography.
Naples
Naples is the crown jewel of Southwest Florida. Nestled on the Gulf, Naples is known for world class
shopping, dining, and abundant, challenging golf courses. It is also only steps away from island
seclusion or the untamed tropical wilderness of The Everglades. Boasting one of the nation’s best
sandboxes and calmest seas, Naples makes a splash with vacationers from every part of the country.
Friendly parks beckon sports enthusiasts and picnickers with lovely green spaces and recreational
facilities.
The Downtown area is lined with specialty boutiques, restaurants, art galleries, and gorgeous
homes. Third Street and Fifth Avenue are places to see and to be seen. A stroll along the sidewalks
of downtown also takes visitors by landscaped parks, fountains, street art, and historic architecture.
As dusk approaches, a steady stream of pedestrians and motorists make their way along downtown’s main drag, Fifth Avenue, to the beach and the pier for the daily ritual of watching another
amazing sunset. From Marco Island, it will take about 30 minutes or more to get to Old Naples,
where there are numerous great dining locations.
Isles of Capri
A virtually undiscovered paradise, the Isles of Capri are a dream location to wind down, relax, fish,
and swim. The Isles of Capri are two miles from Marco Island. There are many golf courses, boat
rentals, and waterside services just minutes away. Direct access to the Gulf means you can explore
the fabulous waterways and islands, walking and shelling, and watching the amazing Florida sunsets. The Isles of Capri have superb, inexpensive restaurants where you can sip on a cocktail while
looking out over the boats and marina.
4
Goodland
A small, laid back fishing village adjoining Marco, this tiny community of Goodland is located off
State Road 92 at the southeast corner of Marco Island, and offers visitors a laid back charm unlike
any other place in the region. Johnny Roberts is believed to have founded Goodland in the late
1800’s. He named it Goodland Point because it featured a 40-acre shell mound left by the Calusa
Indians that was ideal for growing fruit and vegetables. Today, Goodland continues to buck the
significant development changes around it. Only about 200 residents call the fishing community
home.
Bonita Springs
This community is about 34 miles from Marco Island and offers a variety of Southwest Florida delights. Located on both Estero Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Bonita Springs calls itself the “Gateway to
the Gulf.” That slogan is well-deserved, with white-sand beaches running out to greet the calm Gulf
waters. Here you can play in the water or on land and enjoy the lifestyle of a small, charming, beach
town. Boating, fishing, golf, and of course, shelling and sunning, are just some of the wonderful
outdoor activities that Bonita Springs offers. Sunshine and sunsets are only two of the reasons the
town, originally called Survey, was renamed Bonita, meaning “beautiful” in Spanish.

DARROW, A One Man Play
Schedule
Performed by: The Honorable Sanford Brook, Judicial Arbiter Group, Inc., Denver, CO
Clarence Darrow has been heralded by many as the leading trial attorney in America during the first
half of the 20th century. Darrow championed the underdog and civil liberties. Amongst others, he
defended teenage thrill-killers Leopold and Loeb, and faced off against Williams Jennings Bryant
in the famous Scopes “Monkey” trial.
The Hon. Judge Sanford “Sandy” Brooke will perform a one act play, “Darrow,” to open the Marco
Island CLE program. The Wall Street Journal described the play as follows,“ At a time in our national
life when the legal profession has suffered setbacks in the eyes of many, Darrow’s life reminds us
that the practice of law has had it’s great moments in our history, and will continue to have them
when it is in the hands of men who remember where they came from and why they are here.”

Law Schools in Crisis
Law school enrollment is tanking and threatening the viability of some law schools. The reason is
obvious, and ominous. An American Bar Association study found that only 55% of the law students
graduating in 2011 found full-time legal jobs within nine months of graduation. Young lawyers
with nowhere to practice are being lost forever to the profession they chose. The marketplace has
spoken and smart young people are turning away from a future as lawyers. The troubling question
is what will this brain drain do to the law firms – and ultimately, the clients whom they serve – in the
long term?

Law Firms in Crisis?
Law firms and corporate legal departments are scrambling to keep up with accelerating changes
that are challenging their current businesses models. Experts caution that the changes ahead are
more than slight course changes. Much is uncertain, but this much is clear: the law firm that does
not begin to adapt – now – to changes in the marketplace will find itself well behind the curve (if not
out of business). Law firms will need to adapt to permanent pricing pressures; continued commoditization of legal services; new sources of competition, including tech-driven legal service providers; outsourcing and online legal services; and accelerating technology-based and process-driven
alternatives to traditional lawyering.

Clients’ Expectations for the Future
The dramatic changes in the legal world are not happening in a vacuum. Clients and client needs
are driving the process. Clients are looking for firms to not just cut costs, but rather to change the
value proposition in legal service delivery. Corporate clients are past the point of tossing work out
to hundreds of outside lawyers who need significant oversight and training. This panel of leading in
house and industry counsel will explore how practicing attorneys, located in-house and at outside
firms, can navigate through the current turbulence roiling law schools and law firms alike, in order
to align with their clients’ needs and continue to provide successful and cost-effective legal services

Marco Island Historical Museum
During our convention, this museum will be holding several exhibitions. The first is “New World:
Lost World” Exhibition in which you can explore the Native American cultures that existed in Southwest Florida centuries before Columbus made his celebrated voyage to the North American Continent. Exhibits and artifacts examine everyday life in a typical Calusa village and trace the history
of this powerful and complex Native American civilization from its hunter-gatherer origins to its
eventual disappearance in the late 1700s. The second exhibition is “Florida’s Got the Blues” celebrating Florida’s long musical tradition. Learn how a surprising number of notable blues artists got
their start right here in Florida. Featured topics include Early Blues, Florida Women and the Blues,
Blues Clubs, Depression Blues, Popular Music, and Contemporary Blues. This is a fun and informative exhibit on loan from the Museum of Florida History.
