Camping N AT I O N A L PA R K S E RV I C E Blue Ridge Parkway Camping is a traditional way for families to enjoy their National Parks. On the Blue Ridge Parkway, nine campgrounds serve the visitor from early May through the fall color season. Camping is $16 for all campgrounds. Otter Creek (MP 61) is located at the Parkway’s lowest elevation near Virginia’s James River. Peaks of Otter (MP 86) near the Peaks of Otter Lodge, Abbott Lake, the restored 1930s Johnson Farm, and a magnificent trail system. Reservations can be made for portions of this campground online at RECREATION.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Roanoke Mountain (MP 120) with easy access to Roanoke, the largest city along the Parkway corridor. Rocky Knob (MP 167) with easy access to Rockcastle Gorge and just nine miles from Mabry Mill. Reservations can be made for portions of this campground online at RECREATION.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Doughton Park (MP 241) near Basin Cove, Bluffs Lodge, and an extensive trail system. Julian Price Park (MP 297) near Boone and Blowing Rock, North Carolina and close to the Moses Cone Estate. Price Park Campground is the Parkway’s largest campground and reservations can be made for portions of this campground online at RECREATION.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. One backcountry campsite requiring a hike in to it is available along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail between the Old John’s River Road and Boone Fork Trail. From mid-May until the end of October, permits must be obtained at Price Park Campground 828-963-5911. Off-season permits can be obtained at the Sandy Flat Office. Permits can also be mailed to campers with enough advance notice by calling 828-295-7591. Linville Falls (MP 316) on the Linville River and with access to the trail system into Linville Gorge Wilderness Area. Reservations can be made for portions of this campground online at RECREATION.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. Crabtree Falls (MP 340) near the Crabtree Falls Trail and within fifteen miles of Mt. Mitchell State Park. Mt. Pisgah (MP 408) is the highest Parkway campground at almost 5,000 feet in elevation. Formerly part of the Vanderbilt Estate and near the US Forest Service’s Cradle of Forestry site. Shower facilities available. Reservations can be made for portions of this campground online at RECREATION.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers nine tranquil and scenic campgrounds to enhance your journey along America’s Favorite Drive. They do not offer full hookups, but they do come equipped with restrooms, drinking water, picnic tables and grills, and most can accommodate sizeable recreational vehicles. Be sure to ask about Ranger talks and campfire programs that are given on weekends and occasionally during the week. Campsites also offer ready access to parts of the Parkway’s 350 miles of hiking trails for travelers who want to explore on foot, but keep in mind that campgrounds are at elevations of more than 2,500 feet and dressing in layers is suggested all year. Campgrounds are open May through October, with a per night charge of $16. Reservations may be made at Mt. Pisgah, Linville Falls, Price Park, Rocky Knob and Peaks of Otter campgrounds. All other campgrounds and sites are first come, first served. To make a reservation, visit www.recreation.gov or call toll-free (877) 444-6777. Reserved sites are $19 per night. As a general rule, demand is higher on weekends and holidays. Group camping is available only at Linville Falls Campground. Call (828) 765-6082 for more information. In addition, limited backcountry camping is available via permit at Basin Cove in Doughton Park, (336) 372-8568, and Rock Castle Gorge, (540) 745-9661. Camping outside of designated campgrounds (or without a permit at backcountry sites) is prohibited. Most tunnels provide plenty of clearance, although several near Cherokee have a minimum height of less than 11 feet at the road’s edge, and drivers of especially tall vehicles should favor the centerline!
