Welcome Back
What great weather we are having for this time of year!
Term 4 is always extremely busy as we celebrate the successes of 2015 and plan for
2016. All families should have received an outline of what will be happening in their
level this term. Please note important dates on your calendar! There’s certainly a lot to
look forward to during Term 4 and I hope it’s a great one for each and every student!
On the last day of Term 3 our school and vice captains accompanied me to a special
ceremony to mark the centenary of Lilydale’s first fallen soldier in WWI- JD Burns. It
was a moving service. Ava very capably read a poem written by him.
2016 planning and Class Placement Educational Requests
Planning is now underway for the 2016 school year, including class structures. It is
important that we are made aware of any circumstances that may impact on our
student enrolment numbers for 2016. If your child/ren will not be at Lilydale West
PS in 2016, please notify the school office in writing as soon as possible.
Likewise, if you know of anyone who is planning to attend our school next year, please
ask them to enrol their children as soon as possible.
Determining student placements into classes is a complex task and staff members
undertake an extensive process to ensure that the best possible placement is made to
meet each student's educational needs. Factors that we take into consideration when
making class placements include: each student’s learning needs, personal/
interpersonal development, gender balance and other individual needs. If you
have any requests regarding the placement of your child next year, based on
educational grounds only, please put these in writing and forward them to me by
Friday November 6th (It may not be possible to consider requests received after this
date). Please direct these letters to myself. All requests will be given careful
consideration but cannot be guaranteed.
Transition Program for Foundation (Prep) 2016
This begins for enrolled students this Friday 9th October between 2.30pm to 3.15pm
Other dates are as follows:

Wednesday 21st October, 2.30pm to 3.15pm (Visit Specialist teachers)

Thursday 12th November, 12.00pm to 1.00pm (BBQ lunch & meet Yr 5 Buddies)

Tuesday 8th December, 2.30pm to 3.15pm (Meet 2016 class & teacher +
Information Session for Parents).
Reminders
Term 4 means that wearing a school hat is compulsory for ALL students when
outdoors. Hats are available from the uniform shop. It is important that these, and all
uniform items, are clearly named so that, if misplaced, they can be easily returned to
their owner.
School lessons begin each day at 9am.
From 8:45am children bring bags inside, greet their teacher and prepare for the day.
Parents also are most welcome to visit the classrooms from 8:45am-8.55am but we do
ask that you say goodbye at 8:55am to enable the class to settle for a prompt 9am
start to learning.
Children should not be at school before 8:45am. The playground is unsupervised as
teachers are preparing for classes or in meetings with colleagues. Before–school care
is available for those who require it.
Thank you for your support.

TIQBIZ
STUDENT PHONES/DEVICES
If students are bringing mobile phones
or devices to school they must be
handed in at the office.
This is for safety
reasons as if left in school bags or
classrooms these may get lost or
misplaced.
WWCC
It is very important that anyone
helping in the classroom, sports
programs, cooking etc. MUST
have a current Working With
Children’s Check. Application
forms are available online and are
free if you are a volunteer.
Have you downloaded the
Tiqbiz App onto your
Smartphone? If not, visit
the front page of the

allows us to send you instant
reminders about school events,
notice reminders and anything else
that pops up.
NEW TO TIQBIZ
You can now send your student
absences through tiqbiz, we will then
receive an email and put the absence
on our system.

Foundation
NEWS
Sustainability
This term the Foundation students will be learning
about environmental sustainability. They will be
learning to reduce, reuse and recycle so that they
can take action and help to make our community
more environmentally friendly.
We loved our swimming lessons at the end of last term!
We were very excited to get on the bus every day and learnt lots of new
moves in the swimming pool.
On the last day we learnt important things about water safety, and found
out how different it feels to swim in our clothes.
YEAR 1/2
NEWS
Welcome back!
It’s Term 4! Where has the year gone? This term
is no different to any other term. It will be very
busy with many exciting learning opportunities for
students in Year 1/2.
Our Inquiry Unit this term is ‘My Place’, where
students will investigate a variety of topics
relating to the environment and then become an
expert in one.
It’s been great seeing kids reading regularly at
home and using Mathletics also. Keep it up!
Happy learning!
Reminders:
Year 1/2 Sleepover/Dinner
On the 4th of December, Year 1/2 students
are invited to attend a special night of fun
activities (Year 1/2– Dinner and activities,
then Year 2 sleep over). There is a cost
involved and further information will be
given in the upcoming weeks.
Wheelathon
Please continue to raise money for this
worthy cause, as all money raised will go
towards building wheelchairs for children
in need in developing countries.
Year 3/4
NEWS
Welcome back to term 4 which is always an
exciting and busy term. The teachers have been
hearing about all the different and interesting
activities that the students have experienced
during the holidays.
Inquiry Unit ‘Lets Celebrate’
In Term 4 our Inquiry Unit will be
focussing on how different cultures
influence the celebrations we have in
Australia. This unit will enable students
to develop their inquiry skills, whilst
building an understanding about what
has shaped our country.
I
Homework/ At Home
Please ensure that your child has their diary at school every day.
1. It is important that your child reads every day if possible with a minimum of 40 minutes
per week for Year 3 and 1 hour per week for Year 4.
2. Students should practise their spelling words from their diaries also. Apart from
testing their words parents can ask their child to put their words into a sentence, find other
words with the same letter patterns and have some fun with words.
3. Encourage your child to write at home. This could be to help such as making shopping
lists, writing letters/emails or writing narratives, poetry, recounts, lists and so on for fun.
4. Students should practise their tables regularly. Support them to count in 3’s, 4’s, 5’s,
10’s, 2’s and 11’s and from there, look at the other tables.
5. Students will take home weekly Maths homework this term.
6 All students have access to Mathletics and Studyladder. This is a great way to sit with
your child and support their learning or for them to spend some time doing something
educational on the computer independently. (Passwords will be glued into diaries as soon
as programs are ready)
The Year 3/4 swimming program begins next week. Please ensure that your child
comes to school with their bathers underneath their school uniform and that they have
a towel and underwear to change into. All items of clothing, including goggles need to
be named clearly.
Students with long hair will need it tied back. All belongings should be in a strong
water proof bag.
YEAR 5/6

I will be wearing pink every day in
October as part of the “Girls Night In”
fundraising initiative for the Cancer
Council. I would love you to help spread
the word for me OR wear a touch of pink
when you can! "Pinktober” is my way of
helping to raise money to fund vital
support services, prevention and research
into breast and gynaecological cancers.
My mother has had breast cancer twice so
this is very important to me.

PERFORMING
ARTS
I am pleased to announce that, for the second year running, we are participating in this amazing school
initiative.
“Music education has been proven to improve students’ literacy, numeracy, school attendance and
confidence. Music: Count Us In brings teachers, parents, students and the music industry together in
celebration, as more than half a million people unite to sing the same song
at the same time, right across the country. (musicaustralia.org)
To find out more about this initiative go to
https://musicaustralia.org.au/program/countusin/
The song: ‘Gold’, and the lyrics have been uploaded to our school website...Thank you Mr Clarke for spending a considerable amount of time doing this for me!
I encourage you to rehearse the song at home with your child/children. Last year the students at LWPS
showed an amazing level of appreciation for music after engaging in this initiative. The buzz and adrenaline on the day of singing last year was magnificent.
This year I anticipate that we will have the same, if not better, experience.
Date: Thursday 29th October
